Gotta Get Dem Cheevos

What is Demon’s Souls
Demon’s Souls is a Third Party action RPG game developed by From Software that is known for being incredibly difficult. The game focuses more on thinking your moves out and executing them rather than running headlong into fights. It also has a unique Online system, where players can leave behind messages for other players as hints, since the game does very little to inform you itself. You can also see the bloodstains of players who died, showing you how exactly they perished. Other players can also join your world as either a Blue, helpful, or Black, antagonistic, Phantoms. The combination of all these features results in a very unique experience.

Wait a minute Newbie there was already a PRETTY complete LP of this by Squint
Ya, I know. However I’m aiming to show off a number of the features that Squint passed over, mainly online. I will be joined in my Demon hunting journey by my good friend Taoto. He will be summoned as a Blue Phantom in every video and we will co-op our way through the game. On top of this, we will be playing through on NG++++, which involves buffing the enemies to being 76.4% stronger than they are in a normal play through. The last is, since this is a NG++++ play through I have EVERYTHING, and I will be letting the thread vote on how I go into each battle. Reference the second post for a list of unique weapons, spells, miracles, weapon upgrade paths, and their properties.

Format
Videos will be posted on Sundays, and votes will happen bi weekly. You guys will be allowed to vote on the next area I go to and the weapons I use. To explain how this will work, imagine the two weeks are A and B. Area votes for Area B will start on Thursday, then when I post the video for Area A on Sunday where I will also post the winner of the Area B vote, give recommendations weapon wise for Area B and you guys can vote on the weapons I will use.

NOTE ON THIS - While I will take weapons to some areas to show off "Hey these are really good here" I am going to favor weapons that haven't won to ones that have. So if Dragon Bone Smasher wins one vote, I'll probably pass it up in later votes for something we haven't seen yet. This does not mean that we will never see these weapons again, but I do wanna try to show off everything. We do have about 30+ish weapons to go through with upgrade stone path types included.

HALF SPOILER FREE LP - While we can talk all we want about weapons and spells and what have you, I want to keep story related stuff secret since a lot of it is really cool and I want things to be a surprise, certain bosses being a big part of this.

One more thing, there will be bonus videos covering World and Character Tendency stuff. Also I will show off some of the harder parts of the game on a New Character, because ya me and Taoto will be steamrolling some of the harder parts due to outnumbering them.

Okay what else is there to go over
Well other than trying to show off everything, I will also be making this a more or less 100% run. I will be showing where to find every Ring and Unique Weapon. We’ll also be trying to give strategies for different situations. I will throw around the terminology of “BLANK DASH BLANK” a lot, Demon’s Souls is split into 5 worlds, each world in multiple parts. When I say World 3-2 I am referring to World 3 Part 2.

Genocyber posted:

Also, could you post in the thread when you're about to record, and in what area, so we can attempt to invade you?

Surely, and I will do you one better, not only will I let you know when we're recording, but I will also let you know that both me and Taoto are Soul Level 200. So ya .

Big rear end Weapon and Spell Post

You can use this poo poo as reference for anything I don’t explain in the videos, also for weapon votes. Weapons and Upgrade paths we have already used will be marked with a * .

SPECIAL NOTE: My stats are at almost all the soft caps for stats, so I can wield all the weapons ever.

Weapons

Unique Weapons – These weapons are found in the world or dropped by enemies. You will generally only find one per playthrough.

Baby’s Nail – Dagger, does Slashing and Piercing Physical damage. It also inflicts Plague, which as always is mega nasty. However, it deals piss damage.

Blind – Curved Sword, does Slashing Physical damage. Blind has a great property of hitting through shields, it’s crazy.

* Bramd – Large Hammer, does Blunt Physical damage. It also has Poison and Plague resist out the rear end, it also holds the honor of being the heaviest weapon in the game.

Demonbrandt/Soulbrandt – Large Sword, does Normal split Physical and Magic damage. These weapons have the unique property of doing more damage the more White(Demonbrandt) or Black(Soulbrandt) character tendency you have. Also screw you guys you aren’t allowed to vote for Soulbrandt, I have pure White Character Tendency and Soulbrandt would literally do 0 damage.

* Epee – Rapier, does Piercing split Physical and Fire damage. It’s the only thrusting from behind the shield like weapon that does fire damage or can be enhanced to do fire damage. It also scales off the Magic stat.

Geri’s Stiletto – Rapier, does Piercing split Physical and Magic damage. It has this cool property where you get MP when you hit things. Otherwise it’s pretty bad damage.

* Hiltless – Katana, does Slashing and Piercing Physical damage. A pretty good Dex weapon that makes you take 3% of your health in damage when you hit an enemy.

* Hands of God – Fists, does Blunt split Physical and Magic damage. IF YOU WANNA BE A BOSS YOU WILL PUNCH YOUR FOES WITH YOUR GOLDEN GLORIOUS FISTS.

Istarelle – Spear, does Piercing split Physical and Magic damage. This thing has hella Poison and Plague resist, also scales off Faith stat which is pretty cool

* Dragon Bone Smasher (Keel Smasher) – Extra Large Sword, deals Normal Physical Damage. Holds the glory of dealing the most damage with the least amount of stats invested, which is usually why you see people us it in pvp. Also it is one of the few Uniques that can be enchanted. ALSO, equipping this will give you Fire Defense.

Kris Blade – Straight Sword, deals Normal and Piercing split Physical and Magic damage. Doesn’t do great damage but boasts the ability to increase the damage your spells do and increase the damage you take from spells, great for spell casters.

Large Sword of Moonlight – Large Sword, deals Normal Magic damage. Pretty great weapon for damage, but also great because its attacks cannot be blocked, scales off faith which is a rare find, and also is a major reference to the Kings Field series. Also because the blade is suppose to be Ethereal is the lightest Large Sword.

* Magic Sword “Makoto” – Katana, deals Slashing and Piercing Physical damage. Makoto owns, I love this sword, it has no scaling which sucks but it has a 600 bleed rating, which means that if you inflict bleeding your target will take 10 damage per second. However, you also take 1% of your health ever 2 seconds.

* Penetrating Sword – Straight Sword, Normal and Piercing Physical damage. This sword is okay… It has pretty alright damage and scaling off Dex but there are better straight swords out there. However its thrusting attacks will deal more damage than normal.

Phosphorescent Pole – Pole Arm, Normal split Physical and Magic damage. The Pole is a pretty great weapon for Magic users. Not only does it have great magic scaling but it also regenerates MP over time. You’ll be seeing Taoto carrying this around a lot.

* Rune Sword – Straight Sword, Normal and Piercing split Physical and Magic damage. Is a pretty decent straight sword, has an added bonus of upping your magic defense.

Demon Weapons – these weapons require you to evolve a weapon with a boss soul. The spoilers are the bosses name.

* Blueblood Sword – Pureblood Demon’s Soul ( Maiden Astraea ) – Straight Sword, Normal and Piercing split Physical and Magic damage. Blueblood is weird, it deals damage scaled off your Luck stat. It also can be enchanted which as always is a really nice bonus.

* Dozer Axe – Grey Demon’s Soul ( Vanguard ) – Large Axe, Normal Physical damage. A really nice weapon with good stunning attacks. Not much else to say, it has no scaling so it eventually drops off.

* Large Sword of Searching – Hero Demon’s Soul ( Old Hero ) – Curved Sword, Slashing Physical damage. While this weapon doesn’t have great scaling it has the unique property of doubling your Item Find stat. Also this is the weapon that got me through up to NG++.

* Meat Clever – Swollen Demon’s Soul ( Adjudicator ) – Large Hammer, Slashing split Physical and Magic damage. Has great scaling in Str, Dex, and Faith, can be enchanted, and is also really easy to make. Another noob stompy favorite.

Morion Blade – Storm Demon’s Soul ( Storm King ) – Large Sword, Normal Physical damage. Has no scaling but that’s not the important part of this weapon. This weapon has a unique property where if you are below 30% of your heath all of your attacks do 60% more damage. You can hold this weapon in your off hand and use a better weapon in your main hand.

Needle of Eternal Agony – Mixed Demon’s Soul ( Maneater ) – Rapier, Piercing split Physical and Magic damage. This weapon is dumb and bad. It has this bonus thing where you get souls for hitting things but its poo poo. Never use it.

* Northern Regalia – False King’s Demon Soul ( False King Allant ) – Large Sword, Normal split Physical and Magic damage. This is the Soulbrandt and Demonbrandts big brother; in fact it is both those swords put together. It shares the scaling off tendency property but does it better, also does both so you can use it as an invader.

Scraping Spear – Lead Demon’s Soul ( Phalanx ) – Spear, Piercing Physical damage. This weapon is really only good for PvP. It has a special property where a target hit with it will lose 10 durability to all of their equipped items. You can use this weapon to break people armor and weapons. It’s annoying to be up against because of this.

Upgrade Paths

* Standard Path (Hardstone and Sharpstone) – The Standard paths just improve the weapon over all, they improve all aspects of the weapon, scalling, base damage, and on shields the Guard Break Reduction. Also you can enchant Standard upgrade path.

Quality Path (Clearstone) – Quality weapons balance out the bonus you get from STR and DEX so that you get the same bonus from both stats, IE it gives the weapon a C rank bonus in both STR and DEX. Can be enchanted.

* Crushing Path (Greystone) – Crushing weapons buff out the STR scaling, IE it gives you an S scaling in STR. Can be enchanted.

* Sharp Path (Bladestone) – Sharp weapons make you weapons ninja as gently caress, IE it gives you an S scaling in DEX. Can be enchanted.

* Dragon Path (Dragonstone) – Dragon weapons make your weapons fire, it adds fire damage generally equal to the physical damage of the weapon that becomes better as you enhance it. However you lose all of your scaling from stats. Cannot be enchanted.

Tearing Path (Suckerstone) – Adds pretty decent Bleed damage to your weapons, also gives you an S scaling in DEX, but not as good as Sharp. Cannot be Enchanted

Mercury Path (Mercurystone) – Mercury adds poison to your weapon, it also adds a C in DEX to your scaling and reduces the STR to an E. Better for PvP then actual gameplay. Cannot be enchanted.

Fatal Path (Marrowstone) – Fatal adds more damage to your critical attacks, aka backstabs and ripostes. Also gives you an A in DEX scaling and an E in Str. Not amazing since like half the enemies can’t be parried and about quarter can’t be back stabbed. Cannot be enchanted.

* Moon Path (Moonlightstone) – Moon adds MAGIC scaling of C and reduces the DEX and STR scaling to E. Also adds magic damage to the weapon. Cannot be enchanted.

Crescent Path (Darkmoonstone) – Crescent owns for Spellcasters. It adds an A of MAGIC scaling to the weapon and adds the bonus of MP regen to it as well. Cannot be enchanted.

* Blessed Path (Faintstone) – Blessed is the path for Faith builds. Adds an A scaling in FAITH and reduces the STR and DEX scaling to E. The big thing is that at +5 it will give you 6 HP per second regen. Cannot be enchanted.

* Sticky (Spiderstone) – Sticky is used on bows, it makes bows own, well unless you have no points in DEX, then it doesn’t. (It increases the DEX scaling to S on bows.)

* Dark (Cloudstone) – Dark scaling is only for shields, it increases the magic block on them. However it reduces the Guard Break Reduction back to its default for that shield.

Generic Weapons
This is going to be a brief description of weapons and what have you

Daggers – Slashing and Piercing attacks - Basic, Sharp, Qualty, Mercury, Fatal, Crescent Paths
Daggers are kind of meh, not really great but also not terrible due to attack speed and what have you.
Dagger – Standard Dagger
Parrying Dagger – Same damage as Dagger, but has a longer parrying animation
Secret Dagger – Deals more Crit damage then other weapons

* Straight Sword – Normal and Piercing attacks – Standard, Quality, Crushing, Dragon, Moon, Blessed Paths
Straight Swords are really good neutral weapons, wide attacks and the option of a piercing attack is great
Short Sword – Standard straight sword, nothing special
* Long Sword – Upgrade of short sword, more damage, longer reach, heavier
Knight Sword – Upgrade of Long Sword, more damage, longer reach, heavier
Broad Sword – Weird sword, better then Long Sword, but deals slashing instead of Normal and can cause bleed. Also has the Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon, Crescent instead of the standard straight sword upgrades

Large Sword – Normal attacks – Standard, Quality, Crushing, Dragon, Moon, Blessed Paths
Large Swords are slow but BIG swipes, good for killing lotsa guys, bad in tunnels.
Bastard Sword – A standard Large Sword, nothing special
Claymore – Same as Bastard but more damage, longer reach, heavier
Flamberge – Between a Bastard Sword and Claymore, but Slashing attacks, deals bleed and has Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon, Crescent Paths

* Very Large Sword - Normal attacks – Standard, Crushing, Quality, Mercury, Dragon, Moon, Blessed Paths
Bigger swipes and will knock back a lot of enemies.
* Great Sword – The only VLS, it’s alright if you upgrade it with crushing but I would use the Dragon Bone Smasher instead

Rapier – Piercing attacks – Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Fatal, Crescent Paths
I’m pretty sure that all rapiers deal bonus crit damage, also you can attack from behind a shield.
Mail Breaker – Has the special effect of dealing extra damage to armor, but had terrible range.
Rapier – Standard Rapier nothing special.
Estoc – Upgraded rapier
Spiral Rapier – A Rapier that can also cause bleeding damage.

* Curved Swords – Slashing attack, can all cause bleed – Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon, Crescent
I love curved swords, they’re my favorite and first weapons I used, they’re also pretty fast.
Scimitar – Standard Curved Sword.
Falchion – Upgrade of Scimitar
* Kilij – Upgrade of Flachion
Shotel – Weaker than a Scimitar, but has the special effect of 50% of the damage ignoring shields.

Katanas – Slashing and Piercing attacks, also bleed damage – Standard, Sharp, Tearing, Quality, Mercury, Moon, Crescent
Katanas are honorable and are the best weapon. They are also pretty versatile in all of their attacks.
Uchigatana – The only standard Katana.

* Axes – Normal damage – Standard, Quality, Crushing, Dragon, Moon, Blessed
Axes have this weird effect where they have a sweet spot for hits, you hit the right spot and you do more damage.
Battle Axe – Standard Axe, nothing special.
* Guillotine Axe – An upgrade to the Battle Axe, but also you can only find one in the game and its off a Black Phantom NPC but for some reason is the only Black Phantom NPC drop that isn’t a ‘Unique’ Weapon.

* Large Axe – Normal damage – Standard, Quality, Crushing, Dragon, Moon, Blessed
BIG OLD HEAVY AXES, they’re slow, but strong. Also can stagger enemies real good.
Crescent Axe – Standard Large Axe, but also has pretty decent reach.
* Great Axe – A stronger Large Axe that has a larger sweet spot area than normal.

Spears – Piercing damage – Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Fatal, Moon
Long reach, attacks from behind a shield, does everything you expect a spear to do.
Short Spear – Standard Spear nothing special
Winged Spear – Just an upgraded Short Spear

* Poles – Varying Damage
Pokes have weird move sets and each one does different types of damage, but the same amount of damage. They’re pretty similar just different damage types.
Halberd – Normal damage, Standard, Crushing, Quality, Dragon, Moon, Blessed
* Mirdan Hammer – Blunt damage, Standard, Crushing, Quality, Dragon, Moon, Blessed
War Scythe – Slashing damage and can cause bleeding, Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon

Hammers – Varring damage types.
Hammer types have good move sets and have some special effects.
Club – Hahahaha, no. It’s un-upgradable, if you vote for it I will ignore you. Also blunt damage
Mace – Blunt attacks, has a sweet spot. Standard, Crushing, Quality, Dragon, Moon, Blessed
Morning Star – Spiked ball that does blunt(?) also can cause bleed. Standard, Crushing, Quality, Dragon, Moon, Blessed
Pickaxe – Piercing damage, Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon
War Pick – Piercing damage, has a sweet spot. Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon

Large Hammer
Swing that big rear end hammer round.
Great Club – HAHAHAHAHAHA (see club)

Fist
IF YOU WANT TO BE A MAN YOU WILL PUNCH WITH YOUR MIGHTY FIST
Claws – Slashing attacks and can cause bleed. Standard, Sharp, Quality, Mercury, Tearing, Moon
Iron Knuckles – Blunt attack, GUESS THIS GAME IS TOOK COOL FOR A CESTUS. Standard, Crushing, Quality, Dragon, Moon, Blessed

Tutorial – Journey to the Nexus – If you already know how to play and beat the Tutorial boss, you can probably skip this. Those of you who are new though, go ahead, I explain A LOT in this video.

Boletarian Palace 1-1 – Ramparts

So for our first voting phase, we are going straight to 2-1 the Mines of the Stone Fang Tunnels. Now a number of the enemies here are strong to everything BUT piercing and magic damage, so try to give me at least one weapon that does these things. I suggest something like a rapier. Now the reason you don’t get to vote on the area is because we need to do 2-1 to unlock weapon upgrading so that you guys can vote on normal weapons. So without further ado, I declare this thread started.

OH I SHOULD PROBABLY MENTION THIS BECAUSE I AM DUMB AND DIDN'T. While I will take weapons to some areas to show off "Hey these are really good here" I am going to favor weapons that haven't won to ones that have. So if DBS wins this vote, I'll probably pass it up in later vote for something we haven't seen yet. This does not mean that we will never see these weapons again, but I do wanna try to show off everything. We do have about 30+ish weapons to go through with upgrade stone path types included.

I imagine the Nexial Binding is there for the same reason as the Darksign in Dark Souls, in case the player manages to get stuck somewhere they can't kill themselves and they have no items to return home.

Also wow, there looks to be a ton more ghosts in this game than in Dark Souls. Is that just because of a larger player base or the better servers or is it just the game?

The problem with this idea is that in Demon's Souls, it's practically impossible to get stuck somewhere so that you'd NEED to use the Nexial Binding. If you die, you end up at the archstone you last touched, so you immediately have a way out if you need one, by simply dying. The game also auto-saves constantly after you kill things, get items, and/or interact with the level to progress forward. If you get stuck somewhere, you'd be able to just reload the game and start back at the last dude you killed.

There are only two things I can think of that would make you want to use the item. 1) Your weapon's durability has run out and you have no way of running back to the archstone (e.g. fighting a boss), so you use it, get back to the nexus, and use souls in your inventory to be able to afford the repair costs. 2) You're almost dead, out of healing items, and don't want to take the hit to World Tendency.

Zeron posted:

Also wow, there looks to be a ton more ghosts in this game than in Dark Souls. Is that just because of a larger player base or the better servers or is it just the game?

It's probably because the game has dedicated servers just for the online stuff. Dark Souls does not and it makes co-op a lot harder. Also, the game just became available for download on PSN about a month ago, so a lot of people may be still new to the game.

My vote is for Northern Regalia because I love that friggin' thing and it's best to use it on the easy bits because DEMON'S SOULS (or Dark Souls)

Do weapon votes need to be for ones in the post after the OP? If not, then my vote goes for the estoc because I have yet to see that used in Demon's Souls. If so, then, summon up the power of the Hand of God.

For now, Weapon votes are just for Unique and Demon weapons, due to the fact that I don't have access to our second Blacksmith yet. Once we finish 2-1, you guys can vote on other weapons cause I'll have access to all the upgrade paths.

ALSO NEW NOTE : I forgot to mention this but while we can talk all we want about weapons and spells and what have you, I want to keep story related stuff secret since a lot of it is really cool and I want things to be a surprise, certain bosses being a big part of this.

I actually once got stuck on level geometry in Demon's Souls and could not get out (hey, it wouldn't be a Souls game without geometry glitches!). Eventually I used one of those items that bring you back to the Nexus without losing everything (Shard or Archstone? I think). But it did not occur to me to simply try reloading the game to see if I will end up in a slightly different place where I would not be stuck anymore.

I am a sadist. Use Hands of God.

Also, could you post in the thread when you're about to record, and in what area, so we can attempt to invade you?

I was wondering if it would be better to present a pool of 5-7 weapons for people to vote on rather than every unique/demon weapon right away? Otherwise the votes are just going to be scattered all over the place.

This might be a better idea, I'll take this into account the next vote.

EDIT: You know what here's a quick tally

Hands of God 3 - I'm all for this, also deals magic so that's good
Blind 1 - EHHHHHH no, not good for 2-1 at all but its up to you guys
Dragon Bone Smasher 3 - Not bad and the fire defense will help
Hiltless 1 - The R2 for Katanas own and I'm all for killing myself
Scraping Spear 1 - Piercing damage is good also I can attack from behind my shield
Bramd 1 - SMAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH - seriously its a giant gently caress off hammer.
Northern Regalia 1 - Northern is redic and good in almost any level
Epee 1 - This will probably work really well but I don't know how it will work for this level
Makoto 1 - See Hiltless

So I'm switching it up, as per what Curvy pointed out these are your weapons to vote on for this level, go hog wild and vote. Also one last thing of note, there are some unique weapons and demon weapons that I will show off but will not be voted on because they are kinda situational.

So the only character i had left to get the Bramd and turns out it was my test character to see how broken regen is and it was worth it took me 20 levels to be able to one-hand it and to celebrate i took a stroll through 1-1 with Dragonbone Smasher as a shield and Bramd as my weapon. It took until now to realize that it you're too heavy you literally cannot roll so some part were incredibly difficult to get over.

Let's go with Makoto.

I actually tried watching Squint's Let's Play and got turned off by all the bloom. I don't remember much from it other than a place with a lot of slugs and no clue what the gently caress was actually going on because everything was glowing. Let's hope this one fares better!

Yeah I loved Squint's LP, but his video quality is seriously lacking. Which is a shame, cause the rest is pretty great. I'm glad to see a HD option for the videos on this LP.

Blind is terrible on NG4+, so try to use it.

Also I doubt you'll find invaders at that SL. The general "pvp" populace that is left is around sl 120 I think? I do low level invasions every so often.

You're going to 2-1 first? I'm leaning towards Hands of God just because it'd be more entertaining. Blind would be useless here but if people really wanna make things difficult I imagine Geri's stiletto wouldn't be of much use to you ever.

Yeah, there's some really bad bloom in that area.

Already voted for the hands, bu I'm interested in seeing them, too. I've never actually bothered to use them.

That reminds me, are the unique weapons going to be upgraded fully, or will they be +0?

Chiming in real quick, Anything I use will be maxed out upgrade wise, because if I didn't they would do no damage. Also if Fists get voted in I WILL try to dual Fists, IDK how well that will work due to another gimmick I want to do but we'll see.

I'm definitely going to be watching this, at least for as long as I can stay ahead in my own playthrough. I'll probably never play enough DeSo to get all the stuff you're showing off.

Regarding the Witch Armour (which I'm still wearing parts of, paired with fluted plate): it's pretty nice. Physical defence is (barely) worse than leather but much better than any starting light armour. Magic defence is good, fire defence is a bit lacking but plague defence is a whopping +160. It's better than the Saint's Robes, and on par with the Venerable Sage's, trading a bit of fire defence for a lot of plague.

Granted, so far I haven't actually encountered anything that attacks with plague.

Ah, the old ragged robes.
My armour of choice for my character as soon as I found 'em, wore them up through NG+4 or 5 and never had a problem with them.
