 New players still welcome, currently I think Balkan states would be the most interesting!Contest of Nations is a Worldsim - simulating the countries of the world with an emphasis on politics, economics, and warfare. Continuing in the rules-minimal tradition of the various countrysims that have been run before this game is going to be light on specific actions and heavy on creativity. Unlike a game like Balance of Power, there is no action list or credit income to manage. This makes things easier on the GM since he doesn't have to do a bunch of boring upkeep and also allows players much more flexibility. To choose a country just post in the thread saying who you want to be as well as your contact info, new players are always welcome! So who do I play? A country. Any country that existed in the second half of the year 1881, see the end of this post for a map and list. I strongly encourage people to pick countries with at least regional power and influence. Being Germany will probably be a lot of fun, Johore probably not so much. You're playing the government of the country to be specific, and if you get overthrown violently or conquered than that counts as a loss. So what can I do? Anything. Or at least you can try to do anything. You'll be limited by realism - increasing industrialization, improving your army, or invading a neighbor are all possible. Trying to build a nuclear reactor in 1881 is not. As long as your actions are reasonable though, they'll generally succeed. Keep in mind though that there are always trade-offs. You might build more factories only to now wind up with an angry, politically motivated urban underclass. So you just decide what happens? Well yeah. That's how countrysims work. I may use a random element for things when appropriate, but generally it will just be an application of history and common sense. So how do I know anything about my country? Every player will get a statblock in the thread that looks something like this: Country Government: Monarchy, Republic, Confederation or whatever Head of State: Your King or President Stability: A measure of how stable your state is, from Very High to Very Low. The lower the more likely you will experience bad events like rebellion. Development: Civilized, Barbarous, or Savage. Barbarous states are often technologically backward and have difficulty controlling their own borders. Savage states are loosely organized and largely unplayable. This has no effect on your number of actions but will effect action success and such. Population: The number of people you have. Ethnicities: The different ethnicities inhabiting your country. They will often cause trouble. Religions: The different religious beliefs of the people in your country. Economy: A general overview of your economy, strengths and weakness. Domestic Issues: A review of whatever problems or pressing issues are going on inside your country. Foreign Issues: A review of whatever problems or pressing issues are going on outside our country but related to it. Army: Number of soldiers you have as well as their quality, training, equipment, etc. Navy: Number of ships you have as well as their quality and your ability to project power. Colonies: Status of various colonies you may have. So how should I send in my actions? CHANGED AGAIN: Every country receives TWO actions per turn. GREAT POWERS receive THREE actions a turn. They will be listed at the beginning of the year setup. It is possible to become a great power or to lose great power status, though this is at the GM's discretion. Actions should try to be short, I don't want to enforce a character limit. Send them to rakovskymaybe@gmail.com A note on Wars: You can't just declare war on somebody because they're annoying in #bop. Wars need a CASUS BELLI, a reason for declaring and prosecuting them. You can spend an action looking for one or try to invent your own but this will be sensitive to possible public backlash. More importantly though is that this should inform some sort of WAR GOALS. You don't engage in total war with another nation arbitrarily, rather a military conflict is to achieve something. This should be stated clearly when the war begins!  Tsar Alexander III The Russian Empire would like to propose the following agreement between the Great Powers of Europe, consisting of: The United Kingdom The German Empire The Austrian Empire The French Third Republic The Russian Empire That a formal system for resolving European disputes be brought to bear. Peace has, for the most part, been the case in Europe, and we have avoided the disastrous general wars of the revolutionary era. We have done this because statesmen have understood that a war in Europe will inevitably suck in multiple powers in alliance chains and end up as a total war from which no one could be sure which states would survive and which would succumb to violent overthrow, from within or without. Those signatories to the EUROPA PACT would agree that there would be no conflict in Europe without the unanimous agreement of all parties. All conflicts among states with territory in Europe would be adjudicated by the 5 pact members. Any conflict must have a clear war goal which takes into account the balance of power and seeks not to upset it too greatly inside of Europe itself. Any nation which does not submit itself to the Pact's adjudication would face the combined anger of the Pact members, as would any Pact member operating outside of the Pact itself. We can discuss the details more clearly however, I think it's safe to say this would allow us all to undertake whatever reforms, improvements and goals we have outside of Europe and within our own nations without having to constantly look over our shoulders. If all powers will agree in theory to this we'll work out something, if only four powers will agree then I think we can safely eject one and invite in another nation such as Italy or Turkey to take their place, just something to think about!

The Europa Pact should be extended to include all of Europe's empires, to make sure it will be more than merely a tool for momentarily fortunate states to guarantee their exalted position. Certainly it would be wiser, if peace and diplomacy are to prevail, to include the Kingdoms of Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and, of course, the Ottoman Empire, in its affairs. These states should all be capable of expressing their positions and presenting their cases without using one of the five designated powers as a representative, lest they be marginalized.

We have no interests in Serbia, Montenegro, the occupied territory of Bosnia, Romania, the territory called 'European Turkey', nor in any of the Ottoman territories in the Middle East. I should think one Crimean War was enough to educate the great powers on the validity of squabbling over which flag the Maronites flail at.

It is merely the peaceable cooperation of several great European powers. The only other state to which that might be applicable would be the Kingdom of Italy.
