Gerard Butler kind of looks like Jeremy Renner. I think he should keep his Sparta beard. Hell just bring that character over to this movie.

A black hole needs to erupt in the middle of Hollywood so a movie like this is never made again.

The poster makes it look like the President is saved by robot-Gerard Butler. His skin looks like David's from Prometheus.

I dunno, it's yet to be rated, but if it's hard R, it might make for some mindless fun. The trailer already makes it look look like a big budget mid 90's Steven Seagal movie, and it's even produced by Millenium AKA Nu Image, who have churned stuff like this for what seems like forever.

I saw the trailer and the first half looked like it could be a sane, interesting film about a secret service agent coping with his perceived failure to protect the first lady. Then poo poo started blowing up.

Looking over Antoine Fuqua's filmography, I have to ask- was Training Day just a huge fluke, or did it suck as well and just seemed cool when I was 14?

This is so going to be poo poo. The unspeakable awful cgi alone makes this look like a bad DTV movie from the 90s. Its telling that they're rushing to release this before the big budget White House Under Attack movie that comes out in June. It still baffles me that Hollywood keeps making 2 identical-premise movies and releasing them within months of each-other. I mean how surreal will it be when people go to Olympus Has Fallen and see a trailer playing before it for White House Down.

Bobby Lee Swagger is the best iteration of the hyper-competent action-hero thing Mark Wahlberg likes to do, and Michael Pena plays his character's growing worship of Swagger nicely. I'm a fan of the movie beyond what I know to be reasonable. This looks completely terrible, unfortunately. The two Antoine Fuqua movies I like both have at their center an exaggerated portrayal of an archetypal character: a corrupt urban cop and a backwoods anti-government survivalist. I'm not seeing anything that interesting here, either in the characters or Gerard Butler's performance.

Yeah, I really wish they had keep the "George Washington created the first snipers" monologue, because it explains so much about Swagger and Wahlberg sounds pretty sincere when giving it. My guess it was excised for time and pacing (it's supposedly before the climax on the mountain). Also, I love Ned Beatty as the corrupt Senator. The whole performance is a nice callback to Arthur Jensen in Network.

Reading the plot synopsis for this on Wikipedia makes it sound like someone took the script to Die Hard, changed the names and set it in the White House instead of at Nakatomi.

I love Eckhart and Freeman but this movie has the makings of something really cheesy. A loving warplane over the White House that wasn't intercepted about a hundred miles ago? I think the whole premise is a little preposterous and they'd do well if they acknowledged it and did a whole tongue-in-cheek thing.

I like it! I'll be there opening night. Well, no I won't, because I have two small kids. But I certainly will watch it on Netflix streaming someday. Also, I had no idea until just now that there were two They've Got the White House movies coming out this year, and that the other one is a Roland Emmerich joint. I hope he can work an earthquake or tsunami or supertornado or meteor or something into that one at some point.

it sounds like Gerry is trying SO hard to not sound Scottish for once. Why Gerry, why for this movie I may or may not see this because it looks like Butler is getting out of doing stupid RomComs and I fully support that career decision and the idea of recreating Die Hard sounds intriguing as well, assuming that they pull it off in a way that actually works. If this is just Under Siege 3 but no Seagall then, eeeeehhhhhh maybe?

rotinaj posted:Is this just Hollywood trying to capitalize on people wanting to see Obama be put in a bad situation or something? Why are there TWO "White House guns bang boom pow" movies coming out? The same reason there were two 'Snow White' movies last year, the same reason there are two Hercules movies coming out next year. Some studios want to take advantage of the subject once the "bigger" movie is announced. If you look back (or forward), the shittier movie of the two is always the one that came before, because it was rushed into production once the "main film" was announced. Like someone said earlier, this Olympus film was supposed to come out next year but then they wanted to get it out there to steal the thunder on Emmerich's White House Down or whatever it is called. You only have to look at the laughable CGI in the first trailer, or the overall tv:ish quality. It's like Hollywood is playing The Asylum with a straight face.
