Completely out of nowhere, the BBC is now reporting that Pope Benedict XVI is going to be resigning at the end of this month. Aged 85, the current pope has been criticised for his more conservative views in the press recently. I am aware this is a low content post so far however the news is literally only just appearing on the BBC.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-21411304

Edit - checked the BBC news feed and Vatican has definately confirmed his resignation for this month. Expect press hysteria followed by a month of speculation on which aged conservative will take the magic pope hat. I will try and keep this post updated. This is the first time a pope has resigned in over a century apparently. (Goon Yoda has it as 1415 for the last resignation)

You can jump on the live Popefeed from the BBC here if you want to find out what's happening and join in the guessing as to his reasons for the resignation;
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21409149

Thanks to goon Kurtofan here is the pope's resignation announcement ; http://en.radiovaticana.va/articolo.asp?c=663815

Pope posted:

After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

Here is a list of candidates likely to be in the running to become the next Pope according to BBC sources;

Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana, 64
Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Canada, 68
Archbishop Angelo Scola of Milan, 71
Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, 80
Archbishop Christoph Schoenborn of Vienna, 67
Archbishop Odilo Pedro Scherer of Sao Paulo, 63
Gianfranco Ravasi - President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, 70
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, 55

I just came to post this too. This is huge news, the early reports are that he will be citing "health reasons" but that is very unusual, popes usually just keep going until they die anyways. Three weeks notice seems to hint to me at a scandal of some kind.

It just hit the Italian news sites, no one has seen it coming so, yeah, it is very short right now.

It is - its extremely rare for a pope to just quit as the current live BBC news feed is discussing.

This is going to be huge among conspiracy types. The wailing and gnashing of teeth will be hilarious.

More seriously, this is the first time a Pope has resigned office in hundreds of years. I can't imagine that he's just tired of the job, so it leads one to wonder what precipitated this. The Vatican is such a black box politically it's hard to say what's going on, but I fully expect some interesting leaks to be coming our way soon while people position themselves.

Wikipedia is saying it last happened in 1415. The guardian is reporting it as only the second time they have known it to happen.

I was going to make the typical Catholic clergy joke and ask if his sex tape was being leaked, but then I realized the Hitler Youth tape is a more obvious scandal to cause this resignation. I won't be really sorry to see this one leave and I'm glad he's resigning because I felt kind of bad hoping he'd die soon.

Either he's in very poor health or about to get bad publicity. I don't mean the church is about to get bad publicity: this wouldn't happen unless he were personally liable in some kind of very serious scandal. It's gonna be juicy: Vatican mea culpas are rare.

Edit: removed redundant question.

Link had high spirits, but lost his bottle of gin after drinking to the pint of no return. Dis-spirited over his ale-ment and at Lagerheads, he sought brew-prints for beer.

CBC and CNN apps just posted that as a notification (no full story yet). Just as well; his handling of the paedo-priest scandals was inexcusable. Victims and Catholics alike deserve better to say the absolute least.

The question is, will the next Pope have been a part of the conspiracy?

The Catholic church doesn't really seem to care much about responding to scandal, so if he is resigning for something like that then it would have to be huge. The man survived covering up pedophilia and being a Hitler Youth. What else could he possibly be involved with that could tarnish his position?

Pope statement.

quote:

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonisations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.

For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

How popular has Pope Benedict been worldwide, outside of Catholics? My memory is extremely hazy, but I remember Pope John Paul II being extremely well-liked, even by other religions.

Is it cynical of me to assume that, much like everyone else, this is pre-empting a scandal, but the official reason for resigning will be some mambo-jumbo about how the world is no longer a good holy world of God?

And the official pope statement is released as I'm typing it. Health reasons it is.
