Hey there, I'm looking to start a game of Dungeon World, 4-6 players, and probably on Roll20 Nevermind, just doing a Play By Post game instead.

DM Disclaimer: I've DM'ed a game of 4e D&D (changed to Sacred BBQ by Jimbozig near the end) for a year with a group of friends, and done a few sessions of Dungeon World with them as well. I've not GM'ed an online game with strangers, aside from a one shot session in a 4e game on here when our usual DM was out. Hopefully I do okay.

So, let's get to the campaign itself.

The city-state of Overlook, built in ages long past by the dwarves after throwing off the shackles of their Giant masters. When the Dark Days descended upon the land a couple hundred years ago, and the great Empires fell to the hordes of orcs, demons, and undead, Overlook remained standing as a proud beacon of civilization. Today, it is one of the few true cities that still exists in the known world, and while the dwarves are still the majority, it has become a truly cosmopolitan hub of trade and business. Outwardly, it projects an image of strength, prosperity, and reliability, much like it's dwarven rulers.

But you know better. Overlook is a den of crime, political scheming, corruption, disease, dark magic, vermin, et cetera. One good push, and the whole thing would probably go tumbling over. You know this, because you've seen it all personally. Out in the frontier, you'd be called an adventurer, but here in the city, you're an "investigator." The Overlook PD even gave you a nice little license that says so. Overlook isn't a place to be alone, so you've come together with a small group of people and formed a little business. You've been on a few cases together, but haven't really made much of a reputation (or much of a profit) for yourselves. Your biggest case, though, could be just around the corner...

Blister. Working class entertainment and business district.
Boneyard. Dirty industry.
Elftown. Upper class district. (Actually only an average amount of elves)
Forgeworks. Manufacturing, artisans district.
High Hall. Government.
Nine Bells. Slums.
Shantytown. Worse slums.
Stonehammer. Dwarf-exclusive high class district.
Tradetown. Middle class and merchant district.
Bordrin's Watch. Fort to the west that guards the only pass through the Stonehome Mountains to the orc country beyond.
Elsir Vale. Assortment of villages and towns to the east that form most of Overlook's trade.

Don't worry about the numbers, I'll probably turn them into places as we play.

What to expect

Crime! Intrigue! Skyscraper rooftop battles! Sewer hide outs! Construction site chases! Femme fatales! Wizard detectives! Dungeons and/or Dragons! Throwing people off airships! Vampires and other tricksy monsters! Fancy dinner parties! Back-alley brawls! Biff! Bam! Pow!

As far as tone, think Die Hard or maybe Cowboy Bebop and that's basically what I want to go for. Not 100% serious, but not totally off the wall either.

I plan on the story being pretty player-driven. When you submit characters, feel free to make stuff up about Overlook and the lands beyond it. When players are selected I'm going to put your first case together in a kind of mad libs style by asking each player a question or two and using your answers. I'll probably have you guide the game this way for much of the game, because, to be honest, you've probably got cooler ideas than me.

While the theme is vaguely hardboiled detective story, and you'll probably be Discerning a lot of Realities, there will be plenty of heads to bust, so don't worry that a Fighter or other combat based class won't have anything to do. Since it will mostly be in a single city, I will also support changing stuff based on wilderness or travel to be more useful.

Dungeon World

Dungeon World Thread
Rules (Creative Commons)
Roll20

Go ahead and make a Level 2 character, which means you get to increase one attribute by one, and choose one advanced move. Also, multiclass whatever you want even if your class doesn't have Multiclass Dabbler, as long as it fits your character. Core classes or Custom Classes are fine. I actually prefer the Priest and Mage in Gnome7's Alternative Playbooks to the core Cleric and Wizard, so take a look at them if you're considering one of those classes.

Give some backstory about your character, doesn't have to be an essay, just who you are and why you've gotten into this profession. But stop at the point before you meet the rest of the party, because obviously that (and Bonds) will be handled once the actual players are chosen. I'll probably ask you a few questions, as seems standard around here. Also, feel free to turn it around and ask me some questions if you'd like me to fill in some blanks.

I'll leave recruiting open for, say, a week? See you in the Dungeon World.

I've been wanting to playtest my own Impostor class to figure out where I might need to do some rebalancing tweaks, and this seems like a good game for it if you don't mind having a doppelganger in your game to mix things up.

I'm available on about every day at the time you stated except Monday. However, I'll note that I'm deaf and as a result unable to use voice chat at all.

quote:

Few will trust someone who can take on others' forms at will, and even fewer will trust a shapeshifter with a criminal history. And yet one has, somehow, found themselves within the police department. It's a long story starting with a upbringing by a shiftless parent who brought up the young doppelganger to do whatever was necessary for survival and seek out luxury, teaching them many tricks for deceiving others and finding opportunities.

This led into a meandering criminal spree across lands. A common scheme was living in the homes of the wealthy while they were away (with an excuse of having returned early) and looting them just before the owners' actual return. On occasion, a more audacious stunt such as impersonating the warlord of the Miasmafang orcs or thieving directly from the secret stocks of the self-styled Golden King livened things up.

This all ended in Overlook, where the doppelganger was caught red-handed in the Tomb-Temple of Aoz. The head of the Overlook PD saw interesting uses for a shapeshifter under her thumb. She quietly pulled in a favor from a magician who discovered and bound the doppelganger's secret name into a ensorcelled leash that gave her command over said doppelganger and a knowledge of their location at any time.

Now having taken on the name Octavia, the doppelganger does the PD head's bidding whether they like it or not. On the brighter side, the cases've posed an intriguing challenge for their skills at impersonation and understanding the criminal mind.

Class Moves
I Am You
When you either spend hours studying someone in-person or kill them to absorb their identity, they become an assimilated identity. With a similar time investment, you can make up new faces to wear. You start with three identities.
Assimilated identities: Valeria the PD head (Valeria's found uses for a double), one other (probably another PC).
Manufactured identities: Octavia the PD investigator

Many Faces (WIS)
When you attempt to assume the identity of someone you’ve carefully observed, if it’s an assimilated identity take the 10+ result, otherwise roll +WIS. On a 10+, you impersonate them perfectly, right down to the form and/or clothes if they’re humanoid. On a 7-9, as 10+ but it has an imperfection that demands explanation.

I Know You (WIS)
When you try to figure out someone you've carefully observed, roll +WIS. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 1. On a 6-, you develop some misconception that will hinder you. Spend hold 1-for-1 to:

• Know what they would generally do in a given situation.
• React to what they’re about to do before they do it.
• Take +1 forward against them.
• Recover a memory if you've assimilated their identity.

Soul’s Reflection
When you spend a hour to understand the capabilities of an assimilated identity, you gain the use of one of their imitable Moves until the next time you use Soul’s Reflection. If it calls for a roll, you may use +Wis for that roll. For non-player Moves, roll +Wis. On a 10+, you pull it off just fine. On a 7-9, it works but not quite as desired.

Walked Every Walk
When you spout lore about the proper social etiquette for a situation, take +1.

I love Dungeon World and I am available every Sunday and every other Saturday, including this weekend

Ike West, Human Spellslinger
Unreadable Eyes, Short Hair, Tailored Outfit, Sturdy Body
"People don't forget. Nothing gets forgiven."

The story is old as time, and always carries the implication of trouble. It's never, "A stranger was lost on the route to Moray. We gave him directions and he went on his way." It's always the more sinister, and admittedly more interesting, "A stranger rode into town."

So it is with Ike West. Mysterious and imposing, Ike, like any man, has a story to tell. Not that the good folk of Overlook care much for it. He was one of Roy Cassidy's bandits, they whisper. Riding through the borderlands to the west, stealing from travelers and merchants, killing lawmen without mercy. Ike will not account or apologize for his actions, only their consequences.

Six years ago, Cassidy's gang was beset by a schism between Cassidy and his younger lieutenants. Ike alone refused to take sides against his mentor or his good friend Will Fisher, and left the gang for good. No one knows what happened, but six months ago, the gang resurfaced, more violent and ruthless than ever. Rumors abound that they now kill without provocation, using dark magic the likes of which no one has ever seen.

Vengeance and honor have nothing to do with it. Ike could have stopped whatever happened, but he didn't. Now, he's sworn a vow to bring the only family he's ever known to justice, dead or alive.

MOVES
Alignment: Lawful
Mark XP when I bring a criminal to justice.

Magic Wand
This is my wand. There are many like it, but this one is mine. I call it the Peacemaker, and it is mahogany with a pistol grip.

Runes of Power
My skin is marked with glowing Runes, proof and focus for my arcane power. I have 3 Runes, and I gain one every level.

Spellshot (DEX)
When I aim my magic wand and fire a magic bolt at an enemy, I either deal my damage or select a Rune and roll +DEX.
10+, the spellshot hits, and does damage or the Rune triggers.
7-9, the shot hits but choose 1:
-I have to take several shots, placing someone or something nearby in danger (GM's choice)
-Disrupted by magical feedback; take -1 forward on next magical action.
-One of my runes affects me, GM’s choice.

Wanted (WIS)
When I enter a village, town, or city and decide to check the Wanted posters, Roll +WIS.
10+, I am told of 2 local threats (criminals or monsters), the reward for capturing or killing them, and take +1 ongoing against each of them.
7-9, I am told of 1 local threat (criminals or monsters), the reward for capturing or killing them, and take +1 ongoing against it.
6-, there’s a wanted poster of me! Reward for is my level x10 coin. Take -1 ongoing when dealing peacefully with any figure of law while in town.

Unwelcome Traveler
Against sedentary business owners, agents of the Law (who technically can’t arrest you) and other particularly straight-laced folk, I can use “My willingness to leave town” as leverage to Parley.

Try Me
When I Discern Realities, on a 7+ I can ask the question “would they back down from a fight or threat of violence?”

I ain’t never turnin’ my back on Octavia again. (I'm an open-minded fella but a lady who can turn into another lady, or even a man, is something to be wary of.)
I can’t remember if it was Grigori or me that got us kicked out of town that time. (That's what I get for trying to calm an angry mob without drawing my wand.)

RUNES
Slam: Target is knocked off their feet!
Pain: Target is distracted by a surge of pain for a few moments. The next miss rolled against the target is treated as a 7-9 result.

Full Disclosure: I'm on vacation until the end of the month, after which, I wouldn't be able to make any live chats. I am a rather avid PbP'er, though.

Kithracet was a promising artist in his youth, but the wars brought him out of the Great Forest as a soldier. He has fought many battles, and each one took a piece of his heart with it. The army he came with has long since disbanded, and the artist within has been dead so long now, the thought of returning home seems even worse than continuing his life of fighting here. He's been wondering for some time now and has come to Overlook seeking to put his negative energies to constructive use.

There had always been contention between Nether and his son Rigga and recently, Rigga took over the position of village shaman. Even though our peoples are worlds apart, we have much in common with _______________'s.

Moves:
Human Your people understand the power of blood. When you would take damage from one of your own moves, you may instead consume the heart of a freshly killed creature to avoid this damage.

Armored
Ignore the clumsy tag on armor

Language of the Dead
You can understand and be understood by the spirits of the dead, whether corporeal or not. This does not guarantee they'll have anything interesting to say; non-intelligent undead are not known for their loquaciousness, for example.

Honored Ancestors
When you call upon your ancestors for advice, roll+Cha. On a 10+, you get through to someone with the right advice, which they will gladly tell you - take +1 forward to act on whatever you asked about. On a 7-9, you get through to someone, but there's a catch: they will either be reluctant to help you, unable to offer advice that helps you directly, or will feel the need to stick around and lecture you on your failings for a while (GM's choice).

Help From Beyond
When you take a few moments to draw upon the spirits for aid in battle, take 1 damage (ignoring armor) and roll+Cha. On a 10+, hold 3; on a 7-9, hold 2; on a miss, hold 2 anyway, but the spirits are angry - take -1 ongoing to Help from Beyond until the following dawn. Spend hold to:
* grant yourself or an ally +1 armour forward.
* grant yourself or an ally +1 forward to one of Hack and Slash, Volley or Defend.
* grant an ally +1d4 forward to damage.

Spirit Medium
When you try to appease a distressed spirit, roll+Cha. On a 10+, you calm them down for a little while - long enough to find out what ails them and show them you are a friend. On a 7-9, you learn what has distressed them, but had better do something about it or get out of there - fast.
Additionally, when you Parley with ghosts and other undead, you may offer the comfort of oblivion as leverage.

Octavia

How does Octavia present herself in her constructed persona? Does she pass off her mimicry off as being a master of diguise, or just keep it secret altogether?
How far does Valeria go with her control of Octavia? Just taking care of cases, or has she had the doppelganger do some darker deeds?

Ike (Hey, old DM! Hopefully this campaign doesn't have the scheduling problems our last one did.)

How far into the borderlands did you go? Do you have many associations with the orcs, goblins, gnolls, etc, that live out there?
Did the gang have any particular hangouts in town? Do they still visit them today?

Kithracet and/or Nether (If I don't get enough people available at the same time, I might just make it a PbP, so we'll see what happens)

Where'd Kithracet get that ancient sword, and what's inscribed on it?
What is it like for Nether being surrounded by so many more souls than usual? Any notable ancestor spirits hanging around Overlook?

Frank the Friendly

Frank is not friendly. No one really knows how he got that name; if it's some kind of joke, no one laughs at it.

Frank gets the job done. Frank gets the job done right. Frank gets the job done right, on time, and for the right reasons - Frank's reasons. And if it takes him a lifetime, Frank will clean up Overlook one scumsucking pickpocket, corrupt official, or dirty cop at a time.

Frank is a tall, imposing armored warrior, with worn armor and a glinting circle bound to his waist. A holy paladin and ex-cop in Overlook, Frank doesn't know when to stop asking questions, and soon found his badge suspended due to his inability to turn a blind eye. Now he's on his own, meting out his own form of justice, which suits him just fine.

Frank isn't from Overlook, but he's lived there since his teens, ever since his father couldn't afford the tax man's "fee" and found himself swinging from a pole. Frank's mother moved them to the city, where she figured there could be a chance for them to start anew - but she was weak. Frank was not weak, and isn't weak now, and with the light of the Sun God behind him, he has no intention of suffering any more weakness again.

The sword Anguirel is inscribed with elvish runes of power that keep it magically sharp. My idea is that it's an heirloom. His eldest brother gave him the sword when he went off to war. If he ever went home, he would probably be expected to give it back... But, I just had an idea: He doesn't have it yet and will somehow find it soon. Maybe his eldest brother was killed somewhere near here, though he doesn't know that yet. Or he finds it under some other circumstance of your creation. A hook if you want it to be. Either way is fine with me.

Ergonomix posted:

Nether sees the number of souls as a symptom of a big problem. There are two things that need to be done about it: One, whatever's causing the unnatural deaths, or if its merely attracting lost souls, it has to be stopped. Second, those lost souls need to be guided to Oblivion. Simply said, and there's no question it won't be so simply done. Luckily Nether's already lived a full life, this is all ...extra.

Something he suspected would happen did. Not all, but a good number of his ancestor spirits followed him when he left his village. They came along to aid him, and they'll lead him back home after he dies. The most notable one is very ancient and is just called Great-grandfather. Nether, through deep meditation and communion, has recently figured out its secret; its either so old that its changed, or it never was an ancestor; it either always has been, or it has become, an elemental spirit. Nether is quite pleased with, and fascinated by, this discovery. Great things may come from it.

I seem to have poor luck in getting into these online dungeon world games, but maybe third time's the charm.

I'd like to play my Augur class, so I can see how it works in practice.

I'm available pretty much every day for at least the rest of the spring, since I only have independent schoolwork, and 6 pm EST's fine for me since, unless I calculated wrong, it equates to 1 pm in my time zone, so I should be awake by then.

I am reasonably sure I'll be able to make it whenever. I would prefer to run it in voice. (Probably in Mumble or Ventrilo with Roll20 for the maps, since Roll20's native voice capability sucks orc nutsack.)

Someone with high Cha take Connections from the Thief book if we don't get a Thief.

Also, I am not a huge fan of the Dwarf Racial. Any suggestions?

I'm available pretty much every day for at least the rest of the spring, since I only have independent schoolwork, and 6 pm EST's fine for me since, unless I calculated wrong, it equates to 1 pm in my time zone, so I should be awake by then.

Cool, I've always thought the Augur looked interesting, though I haven't seen it in play.

Ask me how much I love Bang Shishigami!

In the Telvani Conclave they call magic the subtle art. They remember the unrestrained power of the arcane arts, how it wracked the land and nearly destroyed the world in the days of darkness. They remember the folly of the sorcerer kings of old, and caution to treat the supernal mysteries with the respect they deserve.

That’s some bullshit.

Walter Shillstone knew that magic only existed to prove you were smarter and better than other people. He knew it since the day he lit his father's hat on fire with the power of his mind. He spent his young life in the Conclave in Overwatch, chafing under such ridiculous directives as 'be careful' and 'don't blow that up!'. He split from the organization in his early adult life and moved on to operate as an independent wizard, a slinger of spells and solver of problems. The reasons for the rift were many, the main two being Walter’s chaffing with their mindset and the corruption of the Conclave itself.

He’s since taken up work as an investigator for the Overwatch PD in addition to his freelance work. He does his job not so much for the good of the people as for his personal fulfillment. Money is nice, but proving you can outsmart any criminal is better.

________ will play an important role in the events to come; I have foreseen it!
________ is keeping an important secret from me.
________ is woefully misinformed about the world; I will teach them all that I can.

Moves:
Human
When you Parley, you can offer to cast a spell as Leverage.

Arcane Learning
You are a font of esoteric knowledge. When you Spout Lore or Discern Realities about something magical or otherwise arcane, on a 10+ the GM will also tell you a little-known secret about the subject.

Counterspell
When you counter a magic spell cast upon you specifically, roll +INT. On a 10+, choose 2. On a 7-9, choose 1:
• The spell deals no damage to you.
• The spell's effects on you are superficial and temporary.
• You take +1 forward against the caster.
• You may Cast a Spell against the caster immediately.

Cast A Spell
When you use the chaotic and unpredictable power of magic to deal with a problem right in front of you, roll +INT. On a 10+, your spell helps to solve the problem, but choose two, or let the GM choose one. On a 7-9, the spell takes effect, but the GM chooses two:
• Your magic's effect is temporary or superficial.
• Your spell affects either much more or much less than you wanted it to.
• Your spell has unforeseen side effects.
• You draw unwanted attention or put yourself in a spot. The GM will tell you how.
• The casting saps your energy. You take -1 ongoing to Cast a Spell until you have a few minutes to clear your head.
On a miss, something's gone horribly wrong. Your spell may well have worked, but you will regret casting it.
When you deal damage to multiple targets with a single spell, roll once and divide the total amongst the targets however you like.

Spell Focus
Your magical studies are centered on a particular kind of magic, an aspect of the metaphysical
world from which you take inspiration. When you first learn magic, select one Focus from

Focus: The Dragon

War Mage
When you Cast a Spell that deals damage, deal +1d4 damage.

Octavia

How does Octavia present herself in her constructed persona? Does she pass off her mimicry off as being a master of diguise, or just keep it secret altogether?
How far does Valeria go with her control of Octavia? Just taking care of cases, or has she had the doppelganger do some darker deeds?

Being known as a master of disguises saves considerably on explanations. She (she goes by the gender of her Octavia persona even though to her gender's just another construction, and one she'll ditch once she gets free) can just say she needs a little privacy to apply her disguise and duck into where others won't see her changing. Plus it makes cooperation with other investigators easier when they can develop plans that incorporate her ability to easily go undercover. The convenience of not having to constantly keep up a variety of personas and make sure fellow investigators don't see her coming out with a different face is well worth any slight risks that might come with the public guise.

The 'Octavia' persona tends to be rather businesslike, though she's started taking to unloosening more as she gets more used to the job and the coworkers. She's almost getting too used to it, really.

Valeria's had Octavia perform some occasionally questionable tasks, but nothing too blatantly corrupt. Frequently the justification given is doing what's needed to deal with the teeming criminal underground, as well as making up for any budget shortcomings. Hard to tell how truthful Valeria's being when she says those things. Certainly a morally upstanding officer wouldn't magically enslave a shapeshifter, but she doesn't seem to be in bed with crime herself, even if she does occasionally have dealings with criminals for 'practical purposes' such as letting one lesser criminal slide to catch a greater one. Not that Octavia really questions such things too much--her history hasn't exactly done much to install morals in her.

(PbP supremacy, man. You were Balasar, right? Good times)

We never went farther than the Stonehome Mountains, so we never really dealt with the orcs. Anything east of that was fair game: goblins were either traded with or terrorized into submission, kobolds were tolerated as hangers-on up until they became a nuisance and we abandoned them, gnolls were slaughtered indiscriminately because One-Eye Faulkner hated "those sodding feral twats". One of my most memorable experiences on the road was a svirfneblin monk who beat us all within an inch of our lives, then handed over his belongings anyway (30 coins and a walking stick) to prove he didn't give a drat.

I still operate from a hideout on the east side of the Boneyard (I'm gonna go ahead and say it's number 7 on the map unless you object). It's pretty bare at the moment, but time was we had an underground tunnel that went under the walls into Shantytown, so we never had to deal with guards. Of course the tunnel was wrecked when they expanded the sewer system but with some work and a few extra pairs of hands it could be renovated so you wouldn't have to fight an otyugh every time you tried to pass through. No idea if the gang knows that the place didn't get torched entirely in the fire a few years back. I hope not.

Biography: Cecilia Valtas is the current Page to the Fae Lord known, among other names, as Elterolon. Elterolon is a being that plays with Fate as if it were a ball, spinning and juggling it about without a care in the world. His Pages, after they have signed the Contract are instruments of both measurement and power, inserting themselves into polite society and manipulating it from the shadows, opening the way for the ball of Fate to roll this way or that. To that end, they are rewarded with a long-lasting life in perfect health. These Pages were rumoured to be as plentiful as rats in the sewers, but Cecilia has never met another before - save for one.

Her mother, Lucretia, was a Page before her, and taught her all the secret rituals and knowledge required for a Page over the course of her youth. When she came of age, she was inducted and signed the contract, gaining all her mother's powers and titles (which, according to Lucretia, she had acquired over a few centuries through her ruthless ambition). It was then that she became Elterolon's Herald of Transition, Steward of Fate, and the Duchess of Reformation. During the ritual, Cecilia received a vision. She came before him in his court, and Elterolon made known his wishes to her. Her mother, now bereft of her power, was dead when Cecilia awakened once again. Because of her upbringing, Cecilia feels rather cozy in Overlook's culture of backstabbing and scheming. But rather than inserting herself within the noble circles, she has built herself a small network of servants, street urchins, thieves and other low-born, inconspicuous folk. They became her eyes and ears after a few small favors, and giving her the knowledge where and when to enact her plans.

Her conscription into the Overlook PD Investigative Force was more happenstance than anything else. One of her contacts, a notorious burglar, doublecrossed her one day by stealing her mother's pendant from her. Furious, Cecilia asked Elterolon to send her a protector and avenger. He sent her a homunculus to be her Minion - a tall, human-looking creature that can appear as a member of society if not investigated too harshly. It is strong and resilient, and has a basic mastery of language, comparable to, say, a commoner, but can't read or write. She named the minion Solomon, and passed him off to those who asked as her bodyguard. Solomon searched tirelessly for the thief, and when it caught him, she cursed the burglar with clumsiness so as to take his greatest talents away from him, before turning him in to the PD. The officer in charge of investigating the burglar's cases was so happy (for thanks to the slippery nature of the burglar, he had eluded officials exceedingly many times) that he offered her a job as part of the Investigative Force. She saw an opportunity for numerous schemes through this new position, and took the job.

They stumbled in from the desert, clothes dusty and boots full of sand. It was rather confusing for the guards, seeing as the nearest desert was hundreds of miles away. Before the guards could ask any questions, the strange traveler had disappeared into the city.

The first night, the traveler looked into the polished brass mirror in the room they'd bought and ran a finger over the plague scars pockmarking their face. The air felt charged, as though somebody had been rubbing amber against wool. "I guess this is the place. After all these years...

Moves:

Expanded Consciousness
When you reflect on the interconnectedness of all things, lose your remaining focus and gain 3 focus. Your maximum focus is 3. You may spend focus, one for one, to:
• Manipulate small objects, no heavier than weight 1 and no further than Near range, as if with your own hands.
• Establish telepathic contact with someone you touch, skin to skin, for up to an hour.
• Have a brief vision of the imminent future, as if you had Discerned Realities and asked, "What is about to happen?" Take +1 forward when acting on the answer.

Telekinetic Strike
When you attack with telekinetic force, roll +WIS. On a 10+, deal your damage. On a 7-9, deal your damage, but choose 1:
• You expose yourself to danger.
• You share your target's pain; take -1 forward.
Your Telekinetic Strike is a weapon with the tags Near, Forceful, and Messy.

The Heart's Sorrow
When you look into someone's heart in search of a secret, roll +WIS. On a 10+, choose two. On a 7-9, choose one:
• The secret is presented with greater context.
• The secret is something you could possibly know otherwise, however unlikely that might be.
• The secret can easily be used to gain leverage for Parley.

Peer Through The Veil
You perceive phenomena invisible to mortal eyes: visible manifestations of emotions, astral creatures which prey invisibly on mortals and signs of great and terrible things yet to come. You have little choice in what you see, but you can interact with these things as well as you can interact with anything else.

Oracle of Hypnos
When you enjoy a full night's sleep without interruption, ask a question about a person, a place, or an event. Then roll (just roll, no bonus). On a 10+, your dreams answer the question in a vivid and clear fashion; take +1 forward to act on what you've seen. On a 7-9, the vision is guarded and symbolic. On a miss, the vision is hostile and strange; take -1 forward because of it.

Kithracet's soul is so bright it almost hurts to see. Kithracet's soul has many wounds. But the potential still there is achingly powerful. If he can find healing, I can't even begin to describe what he'll be capable of.
When Ike opens up, they'll be so much happier. He cultivates that mysterious persona, keeping his troubles to himself. That's not healthy; I fear it may twist him if he doesn't seek counsel from somebody. I try to be conveniently positioned for that, but so far he's rebuffed me.
I have shown my heart to Grigori. Can't very well ask a man to look into your past while hiding your true self from them. Whatever he saw, he didn't seem too taken aback. I'm surprised that he still gets my gender wrong though.
I suspect Octavia is afraid of me. Not that I'd be surprised. I can see through her shifting. If I was accustomed to being able to disappear whenever I wished, somebody who could follow me through any form I took would deeply unsettle me as well.
I have seen the dreams of Cecilia and they are eerie things indeed. Cecilia, Cecilia, Cecilia. You've seen some very strange things, and been to some very strange places. I've Walked on paths that couldn't exist; but hers shouldn't, and that's a very important distinction.

I really like Oracle of Hypnos; I'm a little worried that it won't get much play but it's too cool not to take

Octavia

_____ has seen more of the true me than most ever see.
I wonder what it would be like to live in _____ ‘s shoes.
I have passed myself off as _____ and they don’t know it.

Ike West

_____ can stick their disapproving looks up their arse!
I ain’t never turnin’ my back on _____ again.
I can’t remember if it was _____ or me that got us kicked out of town that time.

Kithracet

_______________ owes me his/her life, whether he/she admits it or not.
I have sworn to protect _______________________.
I worry about the ability of ___________________ to survive in the dungeon.
_______________________ is soft, but I will make him hard like me.

Grigori

My divinations have shown that _____ has a great destiny ahead of them.
_____ thinks me a charlatan, I'll show them.
_____ has entrusted me with their troubles, I shall try to advise them as I can.
My divinations have uncovered something about _____ that they'd rather keep secret.

Cecilia Valtas

I must hide my true nature from _______
_______ would make an excellent servant for my master.
If anyone can save my soul, it is ________
_______ reminds me of better times.
I know what ________ truly desires.

Walker

____________'s soul is so bright it almost hurts to see.
When ____________ opens up, they'll be so much happier.
I have shown my heart to ____________.
I suspect ____________ is afraid of me.
I have seen the dreams of ____________ and they are eerie things indeed.

Basically, assume that you've worked with at least a few of the others on a few cases, or perhaps met them through other means. You don't have to use all of them, but at least two would be nice. When you put someone's name in a bond, include a short description of how you formed that bond. If you see someone else's bond where you think you would fit, you can suggest that too. Both people have to agree on the bond, either way.

Once bonds are done, I'll do as the book suggests and throw you into the middle of the action, with some leading questions.

And just some last things.

Ike West

I think you did your stats wrong, did you mean to do this:

STR 8 (-1)
DEX 16 (+2)
CON 13 (+1)
INT 9 (0)
WIS 15 (+1)
CHA 13 (+1)

Your damage is d10, not d8.

Awesome. I'll add the bond description in italics. Since most of the Warlock's bonds aren't really "bonds", more like suspicions, I don't think I need much correction, but if anybody feels the need, please don't hesitate! Also, my character's name is Valtas, not Vantas.

Cecilia

I must hide my true nature from Walker.
(Their psionic gifts give me considerable pause. I hate mind-readers. I take great care not to hatch any schemes when they're nearby.)
Octavia would make an excellent servant for my master.
(Her impressive disguise skills could prove very useful indeed for my private purposes.)
If anyone can save my soul, it is Grigori.
(That divination gift of him could give me a way out of Elterolon's service, I suppose. And if he ever finds out who I really am, I think his do-gooder nature might implore him to provide it. It would be an unfortunate time indeed, as it means I would have to dispose of him.)
Ike West reminds me of better times.
(He reminds me of my father. A good man, despite the rough edges. But too set in his ways. Life will catch up to him as it did to my father. Maybe because he wants it to.)
I know what Kithracet truly desires.
(He's an easy one. A tortured soul like him? He needs a purpose in his life so he can have the peace of mind he so greatly desires. A nice wife would do him good, too.)

Kithracet’s got guts! I’m glad he's on my side. (Even if he does have a little too much of the grim woe-is-me thing going on.)
Cecilia can stick their disapproving looks up their arse! (I've done bad things and I've paid for it. I don't need your pity or disdain. gently caress off.)

My character's name is Ike. My username is Captain Walker, and both are totally different from the androgynous psion character. I propose that they be promoted to guard captain at some point for maximum confusion/hilarity.

Doh!

fixed.

Grigori's Bonds

My divinations have shown that Walker has a great destiny ahead of them. I haven't been able to help Walker find out much about her past, something or someone seems to be actively blocking me, but I have discovered that Walker's quest to recover her memory is going to have significant ramifications in the future.

Ike West thinks me a charlatan, I'll show them. I once found myself in a spot of trouble with the locals in a small town during my wanderings, apparently they had had some previous trouble with real charlatans and were pretty high strung. Ike "helped" me out but the incident probably left him with a poor image of my honesty.

Kithracet has entrusted me with their troubles, I shall try to advise them as I can. Fortune telling is all about helping those who are floundering find their path again.

My divinations have uncovered something about Cecilia that they'd rather keep secret. There's something weird going on with Cecilia's fate, whenever we're working together the omens are always much more vague and in flux than usually, especially when they involve her directly. Thankfully I can usually work around it, but I'll have to be careful around her.

Edit: vvv:Corrected:vvv

Sorry Okasvi, I decided that Walker is female under the androgynous exterior pretty much out of sheer contrariness

Well, while we're waiting for Ocatavia's bonds, I'm going to get the thread started up tomorrow hopefully. Been busy with work, and then I had my real life Dungeon World game to GM today, in which the person whose character's home town was going to be the central part of the session couldn't make it, so I had to totally re plan everything.

Octavia's bonds

I feel like Ike West doesn’t trust me. It's kinda obvious from the way he keeps looking at me when he thinks I can't see him.
Walker has seen more of the true me than most ever see, and I don't like it. How do I deal with someone who can read my secrets, even who I am?
I wonder what it would be like to live in Cecilia‘s shoes. There's something going on with them I don't understand. Maybe I would if I could be them.
I have passed myself off as Grigori and they don’t know it. Valeria asked me to one day, and brought me on a mysterious 'consultation' she apparently didn't want to trust to someone she doesn't hold on a magical leash.

Just so you know. I'm trying to keep my divination questions somewhat vague and vary them based on whether I succeed or not to avoid ruining the mystery. While I think that speed divination would be fine in a normal game, I realized that it could be a bit more problematic in a mystery game like this. I only asked a specific question this time, since I failed and "where should we go" gives a lot more room for the GM to be vague than "what direction should we head in" which I would have asked if I had succeeded.

Edit: Also what is our office situation? Every private eye needs one. And what name is written on the door glass? Have we repurposed Grigori's clinic or do we have some other accommodations?

I think we're semi-independent. We know each other, we've worked together, we've occasionally worked against each other...

For my latest Discern Realities check I accidentally made a roll at +1 instead of +2. Should I take that result instead of my second roll?
