What is Horse Racing?

Horse racing is an event where a number of horses go a certain distance around a track trying to beat each other to the finish. Well...that isn't particular descriptive but is the simplest example to explain what is. Horse Racing is actually quite complicated. So let's narrow down this topic

Two types of Horse Racing

What?!?! There is more then one type of horse racing?!?

Yes there is! There is actually two main types of horse racing in America.

:horse:Thoroughbred Horse Racing:horse:

This is the most common and most recognizable horse racing around. These are the horses you see on TV when the Kentucky Derby airs. T-Bred racing can take place on dirt, synthetic or turf surfaces. Jockeys are ontop of the horses to direct them around the track. Races are measured in what is called furlongs which equates to 1/8 of a mile. So a 7 furtlong race is roughly 7/8's of a mile. Races can be run in what is called sprints which are considered less then 8f (1 mile) anything over that is consider a route race (over 1 mile). Races can go all the way up to 2.5 miles which is considered a marathon race and very rare. Also consider Thoroughbred racing is what is called Quarterhorse racing. These are horses that run as fast as possible over a short distance. Usually a few hundred yards.

In T-bred racing, the most famous of races are the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown consists of 3 year old races of the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. To win the Triple Crown, you have to win all three races. They are some of the biggest stakes of the year for American racing and is extremely difficult to win at. Affirmed was the last Triple Crown champion in 1978 and their hasn't been one since. The reason why no one has won it is that it is very difficult to win all three races as a 3yr old horse. Those horses have generally never run the distance of the races let alone do it at such frequency (all three races are run 2 weeks apart, so 3 races in roughly 6 weeks). There is also the Breeder's Cup which takes places October-November and is the richest horse racing in North America. Cup consists of a card of races of the best horses at the all the favorite distances (Sprints, Mile, Turf, Dirt etc.).

:quagmire:Standardbred aka Harness Horse Racing:quagmire:

Standardbred racing is vastly different then to its big brother, T-bred racing. Standardbred is also called Harness Racing. Harness racing takes place on either 1/2, 5/8 or 1 mile tracks. All races are 1 mile in distance. If a race is on a 1/2 mile track, horses go around TWICE. Harness racing can also race year around in rain, sleet or snow (pending on track). Jockey's have been replaced by Driver's in harness racing. Driver's sit BEHIND the horse in what are called sulky's (little carriages). Harness racing is alot more dependant on speed, positioning and driver skill.

Harness racing consits of trotters and pacers. The difference between the two is how the horse runs. Trotters literally trot around the track and the pace gait is a two beat gait that runs very differently then the trotters. A race can consist of one or the other gait and unlike in horse racing where a horse can run however it wants, in harness racing the horses MUST stay in the gait of the race. If the horse breaks the gait, they have to fall all the way to last place before they can continue racing. Breaks do happen and frequently and that is what makes harness racing exciting is that even though the horse who is the heavy favorite by the betting public, that horse can potentially break and lose the race.

Like T-bred racing, Harness racing does have it's Triple Crown, but its different for pacers and trotters.

Pacers Triple Crown:
-Cane Pace
-Little Brown Jug
-Messenger Stakes

Trotters Triple Crown:
-Hambletonian
-Yonkers Trot
-Kentucky Futurity

Basic comparisons of T-bred Racing vs Harness Racing

T-bred Racing:

-Use of Jockey's and Jockeys are ontop of the horse
-Distances run from 300 yrds to 2.5 miles
-Distance measure in furlongs
-Raced on dirt, synthetic, turf
-Horses leave a Starting Gate at the beginning of the race at the same time

Harness Racing:

-Driver's instead of Jockey's and Driver's ride behind the horse
-Races are always 1 mile long
-Raced on a mixture of dirt, clay and other materials
-Horses either run in Trotter or Pacer races
-Horses leave a moving Starting Gate for a runup start, this plays into strategy of the game

:pseudo:Betting on the ponies:pseudo:

Doesn't matter if you are betting on Harness Racing or T-Bred racing, the betting basics are the same. Unlike sports betting, odds of the horses can change up to when the race starts, so when the oddsmaker makes the Morning Line, that is his best guesstimate as to how the horses final odds will be. Here are the types of common bets in horse racing:

Win - Betting a horse to get 1st in a race $2 Minimum
Place - Betting a horse to get either 1st or 2nd in a race $2 Minimum
Show - Betting a horse to get either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a race $2 Minimum
Double - Betting on two horses which must win the 1st and 2nd race
Exacta - Betting on two horses which need to come in 1st and 2nd in exact order $1 Minimum
Exacta Box - Betting on two horses which need to come in 1st and 2nd in either order $1 Minimum
Trifecta - Betting on three horses which need to come in 1st, 2nd and 3rd in exact order
Trifecta Box - Betting on three horses which need to come in 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any order
Superfecta - Betting on four horses which need to come in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in exact order
Superfecta Box - Betting on four horses which need to come in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in any order
Super Hi 5- Must pick the 1st,2nd,3rd,4th and 5th place horses in exact order
Pick3,4,5,6 etc.- Must pick the winner of every race for X amount of races

:greatgift:Is it legal in USA to bet on tracks on the internet?:greatgift:

Yes it is! Unlike online poker in America, you can infact bet on horses online via a variety of different wagering options that I will last toward the end. Some states do not allow this such as NV and TX. Check your local state laws to see if your state allows online horse wagering.

How to bet

Above are just some of the types of bets. Every track can offer different types of bets and even some not listed above. For the beginning, I recommend starting off with purely win betting and going from there. Win bets can offer some large payouts depending on odds on any given horse. If you are looking for bigger payouts, you can start with Exacta's and Trifecta's. I would recommend Exacta's for beginners and boxing them at that. Boxing is taking at least two horses (maybe more) and having it so it doesn't matter if the horse is 1st or 2nd. As long as any of your horses run 1 and 2, you will win. Exacta payouts can be large. The payouts are posted via the Exotic wagering pool so you can see what pays out. Pick tickets can offer some of the biggest payouts in racing. It is also the hardest bet to have as you have to pick multiple winners in consecutive races. Not for the faint of heart, but the payout at the end can be bet.

So for beginners I recommend:

-Win bets on horses you like
-Win/Place bets on horses you like but going off at big odds
-Exacta's if you want to start on exotic wagering
-Trifecta's if you are feeling frisky and have some experience underneath your belt
-Pick tickets when you have decent bankroll and want to go for some big payouts

Where do I bet online?

Any online sportsbook or places like TVG. I personally use Twinspires as they are reputable in the horse racing community. They also have live streaming feeds to most if not all tracks.

:bubblewoop:How do you Handicap horse racing and make money?:bubblewoop:

This is literally an entire post on its own. Handicapping T-bred is completely different then handicapping harness racing. There are many subject matter specialists and literally hundreds of different ways to handicap and try to determine a winner. Here are just a few variables that people can take into the account when trying to find a winner of the race: Speed, variable, class drop, trainer, jockey, pace, race shape, pedigree, driver, recent times, move angles, current form etc. Pen and paper methods as well as computer software is out there that can help you handicap.

The first thing you need if you are to even attempt to learn this game properly is to look at a race past performance. Past Performances (PP) are NOT what you get when you actually visit a track. That is a program. The program lists the horse, trainer, jockey/driver, owners and ML odds. PP gives the history of a horse from the last 5-10 races. Handicapping is all about predicting when a horse will do well. If you didn't think that was confusing enough, there are actually difference sources with different information! So its trying to find out what figures you trust the most. Perhaps in a later post I will go over ways I handicap horse races. Below I will have some links for some helpful resources.

Helpful Links

Here are some helpful links that may get you started on horse racing:

Daily Racing Form
Literally the place where Past Performances started. Great T-bred resource. Tons of helpful information, news, PP downloads etc.

United States Trotting Association
Great resource for all things harness racing. Offers free PP's at certain tracks

Equibase
Official source of T-bred information and stats. Wealth of information here.

Trackmaster
Source I use and recommend for Harness Racing Past Performances and data.

Mr. Trifecta Handicapping Horses Tips and Picks
This is the website I run personally that offers Handicapping tips and picks on a variety of different horse racing subjects and tracks. I post daily free track picks for both T-bred and Harness racing. I have been doing this for over 10 years and I have no problems helping others out in the game. I can say that I have helped many goons win hundreds of dollars since I started posting in the Sports Betting thread by having them bet my picks.

Last year I was live at Running Aces Harness Park as the live ontrack Handicapper Analyst for the track giving my picks and make people lots of $$$. It is looking like I will be doing it again this year, but still in talks about that and will have news in the future.

Here are tonight's picks for Pompano Park. They are also up on my website https://www.mrtrifecta.com

I am back baby and ready to make you some cash! Might be a bit rocky tonight as I need to get back into it, but lets give it a go!

R1: 2,7,8......South Jersey Hey-8/1 ML......Dropping back down to 7500 levels here. Nearly won last time at this level. Facing much easier, but will need a good trip. Any form of early speed is to the outside. Should be within 3 lengths of the leader to have a shot.

R2: 4,1,7......Sea Gypsy-6/5 ML......Far too much for the rest of the field. :quagmire:Mr. Trifecta's Lock of the Night!:quagmire:

R3: 5,3,2......Odds On Aventure-5/2 ML......Dillander back aboard after nosing out similar company last time out. Can display some nice early speed and the five hole winning at an amazing 26% clip.

R4: 4,6,8......Foxy Guy-6/1 ML......Tossing last due to bounce. Draws the four hole. Has cashed last 5 of 6 with a victory in at lower level. Has come close and should good a good trip here. :getin:Mr. Trifecta's Pick of the Night!:getin:

R5: 6,1,9......Prom Queen Hanover-3/1 ML......Cashed last two of four and tough to beat with Ranger aboard. Does have some stiff competition so should be able to get the morning line here. Drop in class as well. Pick 4: 1,3,6,9 w 2,5,6,7 w 1,2,5 w 5,8 - $96

R6: 2,7,5......Cool Touch-7/2 ML......Dropping in class to 8k claimers. Has not cashed her this year and broke last time out. Haven't been able to settle down this gelding, but huge driver change to Wallis here especially jumping off from the 3. Shows me signs this gelding is ready to win. Likes to be on the lead and should get a challenge from the 3.

R7: 5,2,1......Looney Dune-8/1 ML......Cashed last time out after chasing a runaway. Dillander has her at what I believe is the best she can do. Maybe a barn burner on the front between the 1 and 2. Looking for that and seeing if Looney can close up. Won at the 5 hole last time out against lesser. :siren:Mr. Trifecta's Longshot of the Night!:siren:

R8: 5,8,3......He'smyman-5/2 ML......Never know what you are going to get with this horse. Plano has been very hit or miss. Last time at this post in this class, ran away by 2 1/4 lengths. Looking for the same here. Doesn't have great finishing but can grind you down. If the 8 gets clear, could be flying late.

R9: 6,5,3......Miss Maverick-7/2 ML......Not a whole lot to go on here. Was consistent until getting pulled away in the stretch last time out by a horse that had a year best. Gets another try. Hennessey should have her out on front with the lack of speed here.

Mr.Trifecta

Pompano Park picks for tonight are up on https://www.mrtrifecta.com Much better value tonight then last nights card. Looking to shake off that rust and do people justice! Let's make some money!

R1: 4,1,5......Beluga Ridge-8/1 ML......Shipping over from The Meadows. Qualifiers haven't showed much, but looks to be just prepping the gelding. Times should compare well with this field from The Meadows. A solid pocket trip could provide the upset with Ranger aboard.

R2: 5,1,8......Jam and Jelly-6/1 ML......Driver change to Ranger is a boon here. Plano hasn't gotten much out of this mare and looks to the driver change for some help and why not as Ranger is dominate here at PPK. Where this mare has done her best its out on front. Gets a good five hole here and I see Ranger sending her to the front in race where there isn't much early speed.

R3: 2,5,3......Majic Laughter-5/2 ML......Fell asleep at the Stretch call last time. Tossing last with Wallis aboard. Plano jumps back in the saddle. Having won with her four back. Loves to be on the lead and looks to be long speed. Dangerous.

R4: 4,5,3......Miss Reba-8/1 ML......Scratched last time out. Hasn't raced in just about a month. I am not terribly concerned as her first race this year was nearly the same amount of time off and came back to win off the layoff at 83/1! Odds are against her, but how can you turn down that opportunity again? :siren:Mr. Trifecta's Longshot of the Night!:siren:

R5: 4,1,2......Stardom Seeker-4/1 ML......This race is a crapshoot. Its a sweetheart race so all ladies driving, with most of them with no experience. In most cases I would say pick the driver with the most races under the belt and go for it (which would be the #2), but going for something different. If I was the trainer with a rookie driver and was telling the driver how to drive the horse and in this instance my top choice, the horse loves to be out and early so the trainer probably says get to the lead and let the horse do the rest. Pick 4: 1,2,4 w 5 w 7,6 w 1,6,9 - $18

R6: 5,7,1......Bacfromthedge-6/1 ML......Cashed last two. Has been very consistent with Lareau aboard and gets that lovely five hole. Has cashed at this level and very versatile with the speed. Has a great shot and a good price. :getin:Mr. Trifecta's Pick of the Night!:getin:

R7: 7,6,5......Danijill-3/1 ML......Broke last time at the 3/4 call. Tossing last and Wallis has been finding ways with this Mare to win from the outside. Looked impressive two back and gets the seven hole once again. As long as she doesn't break, should be a major contender.

R8: 6,1,9......G P S Legacy-7/2 ML......Dropping in class here from Winners of 2-4. Destroyed at the 5000 claimers and steps up into a bigger price tag. I think he will do well and get out fast. Lots of early speed here so best trip might be 3rd over.

Hey hey, this brings back old memories. I gave up on following your picks at some point as the payouts dropped a bit (a victim of your own success, I imagine - last I recall, your win % was about the same as ever), but I suppose I could get back into the swing of things.

If you're going to bet, my suggestion is to get signed up at your book of choice, then follow the odds as post time nears. If the odds have gone to poo poo, lay out of the race - it really kinda blows when you hit an exacta but it doesn't even cover your boxed bet.

As you get a bit more familiar, do your own research too. Trifecta's picks are solid, but you're really putting yourself in the best situation if you look into exactly WHY a horse has great/super-longshot odds.

Oh, and I'm sorry in advance for when you get screwed out of a nice payout when the inquiry sign goes up. :suicide:

Hey there! Unfortunately, you were correct when it came to Running Aces. Shooting myself in the foot giving out my picks when I was there live. None the less, it was great being in that atmosphere and the fans at the track seemed to join winning some cash albeit at some terrible odds.

If anyone interested in horse racing and handicapping, Joe does speak volumes when he says you need to look into a horse and ask the question "Why?". Why is a horse 30/1? Why is the longshot bet down to 1-9. It can really shed some light on the situation.

...and what about the kick in the groin?
My brother and I had a day off and decided we wanted to learn to play the ponies. We drove out to the Aqueduct and shat ourselves. We watched the horses run for about an hour then left because we had no clue on what to do or say. Thanks for this thread, it's renewed my interest in horse racing again.

I have some generic questions. I live in NYC and a few minutes drive from either Yonkers, Belmont or the Aqueduct. Should I look to open an account with NYRA or go to the tracks as opposed to online? Are there any real advantages to rule one or the other out? Although on a warm day it's nice to be outside and watch them run. I know this sounds really stupid and probably naive but is race-fixing something to beware of? Are there any owners/stables to avoid because the race may be rigged? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I heard (still hear) stories about this.

Oh and one last thing, is there any etiquette that needs to be observed while at the track?

Yeah learning to play is difficult at times. Mastering it takes a lifetime.

To field your questions:

If you are new to horse racing, I would recommend going to the track at least a few times. Go to both Yonkers and then either Big A or Belmont and see what you like. Both are extremely different in how you handicap as well as how they are to watch. From there, once you been a few times, I would open up an online account for those days where you just can't be bothered to get out of bed and want to bet the ponies. Problem in online is its so easy to bet on your picks that money can certainly go quicker as you aren't physically handing dollars to the teller.

Race fixing. Has it happen? Yes. Does it happen still? Yes, sometimes, everyone once in awhile and no. What I mean by that is everyone will have an answer. Do people cheat at the game? A resounding YES. Do they all cheat? No not at all. Horses are more likely to be doped up then an entire race to be fixed. For a race to be fixed, alot of people generally need to be involved, from trainers, owners, jockeys to people at the track. Matter of fact, it has happened recently. Here is a link: http://www.drf.com/news/michigan-man-pleads-guilty-race-fixing-tampa-bay-delaware

Those who are caught are immediately fined and mostly likely banned for X amount of time depending on the crime. Are there skeptical trainers? Absolutely. A barn off the top of my head is Midwest Throughbreds and specifically Jamie Ness as the trainer. They are known for taking horses in my neck of the woods (Canterbury Park MN) and bringing them down to Tampa and somewhere between said trip, this horse turns into a Graded Stakes winner. Not all high percentage trainers are cheaters. It is just very unusual for a trainer to take one let alone multiple trash $3000 claimer horses and have them turn around and destroy others at Allowance level races.

TL;DR Don't let cheating stop you from learning the game. Cheating does happen, but not enough to where it is going to affect you when you bet.

Balmoral Park picks are up tonight at https://www.mrtrifecta.com Fantastic card, tons of value to be found in each race. Very juicy possibilities with payouts!

R1: 6,7,8......Alequash Hotspur-6/1 ML......Has been impressive all three times out. First time start showed a very nice last quarter. This gelding also has won the last two. Gets a nice post and should be gobbling up the ground late. :getin:Mr. Trifecta's Pick of the Night!:getin:

R2: 4,10,7......Maple Grove Ryann-9/2 ML......3 wide move didn't work out so well last time on the 3/4. Gets improve post and should be in a better position. 5th lifetime start and hasn't quite settled in yet. Leonard gives her another try. Has no early speed, but anything of consequence is to the far outside. Slow fractions that should occur could give this mare a shot.

R3: 2,8,4......Hollywood Hustler-15/1 ML......Shipping in with Short aboard. Cashed last two and likes to be out in the lead. This race is fairly wide open as there isn't much here. Fast early fractions could put the field away as there isn't much in the way of steady closers here. :siren:Mr. Trifecta's Longshot of the Night!:siren:

R4: 5,7,3......Fox Valley Lilca-6/1 ML......Nearly weekly levels of similar competition as she has faced this competition all too many times, but with mixed results. Won two back. Leonard needs to get this mare out to the front or just behind. Has a good post to do it here, but all depends if that cover is live. If she isn't out front by the 1/2 pole, then she probably won't make it.

R5: 1,8,7......Slippin Away-12/1 ML......Another bomber for a pick here. Big thing to see here is the big drop in class. Cashed last three at this level with a victory. Two of the cashed with Roberts who is back aboard here. That win was also on the rail. Should be on the lead as I expect Big Zipper to fly over which should be good cover. I will take my chances here.

R6: 9,7,8......Ants Iner Pants-8/1 ML......Celebrity Hercules will be down to nothing, with a strong shot of winning, but I am going with the front runner from the outside. Won last two of three. Last time out, ran out of gas down the stretch. I think with a little slower pace, could have a shot to wire the field once more. Should get a decent price.

R7: 4,5,3......Becky B Skipalong-6/1 ML......Won last time out against non claimers and has bounced back into claimers here. Cashed last three of four. Nice last quarter two back. Should be two or three back to have a shot. Pick 4: 3,4,5 w 9 w 3,4 w 3,5,8 - $18

R8: 9,5,1......Anthonyskywalker-5/2 ML......Nearly wired the field last time out before giving away. Draws to the outside, but shouldn't be an issue. Has cashed in far tougher and coming back from injury. 2nd off the layoff should be a winner.

R9: 4,3,5......Darn Shocking-5/2 ML......Cashed last three. Closed nicely but was in no contention against the winner last time out. Draws well on post. Looking to take that next step in this class level and has a shot here.

R10: 8,3,5......Lucky NZ-8/1 ML......Won multiples times at this level and this post. Cashed last two under Widger and draws the outside. Can flash some very quick speed in a short amount of time and can close nicely. Love the price here.
