NOW WITH UPDATES! (BELOW) ![]() plutorocks.com posted:Images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2011 and 2012 revealed two previously unknown moons of Pluto. So far, we have been calling them "P4" and "P5", but the time has come to give them permanent names. If it were up to you, what would you choose? Goons, we have a chance to name the two newest moons that have been discovered orbiting Pluto. Generally, all of the names on the poll deal with the Roman mythology surrounding Hades and the Underworld - but they are also accepting names via a write-in form. Voting ends at noon EST on Monday, February 25th, 2013.![]() A little background info: ![]() Pluto was discovered in 1930, and much like this contest, the discovering observatory was open to suggestions. Thanks to an 11 year old ![]() In keeping with the cold and dark tradition of underworld-related namings, Pluto's 3 moons were: Charon ![]() From wiki: "the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead." Nix and Hydra ![]() In mythology, Nix was the mother of Charon, and the Greek goddess of darkness and night. Hydra is the nine-headed serpent which battled Hercules in Greco-Roman Mythology. The nine heads of Hydra are a reference to Pluto's tenure as the ninth planet little did they know that this tenure was to be short lived; its initial, H, refers to the Hubble Telescope which discovered Hydra and, together with Nix, to the New Horizons mission whose safe passage was the motivation for taking the Hubble images. (also from wiki) ![]() In 2006, some haters said Pluto wasn't big enough to call a planet any more and demoted it to a simple trans-Neptunian object. This caused much controversy and rekindled the centuries old it's not the size that matters - it's the motion of the ocean debate. ![]() Bill Nye the Sciency Guy posted:We're calling it a dwarf planet. I like the term "ice dwarf." … These are the objects smaller than, let's say, 1,500 kilometers … made of ice. … Ice dwarf -- there it is: It's icy, it's small, it's out there. Bill Nye the Sciency Guy condones astronomical dwarf-planet discrimination, so I guess it's okay. shown: Bill Nye holding life size Pluto replica ![]() So here are the two new moons: The moon currently known as P4 ![]() hubblesite.org posted:P4 is the smallest moon yet found around Pluto, with an estimated diameter of 8 to 21 miles (13 to 34 km). By comparison, Pluto's largest moon Charon is 746 miles (1,200 km) across. Nix and Hydra are roughly 20 to 70 miles (32 to 113 km) wide. The moon currently known as P5 ![]() hubblesite.org posted:The newly discovered small moon, designated P5, is the innermost of the moons found by Hubble over the past seven years. The Official Poll![]() Here are the official options:
Alecto: One of the furies, hideous snake-haired monsters who were servants of Hades. It was the job of Alecto to punish mortals for their crimes of anger. Cerberus -or- Kerberos: The three-headed dog who guards the gates to the underworld, preventing the the dead from escaping. Erebus: A primordial god and the personification of darkness. With Nyx, he fathered many children including Hypnos and Styx. Eurydice: The wife of Orpheus, for whom he entered the underworld. During their journey home, Orpheus violated his agreement with Persephone not to look back, and Eurydice was lost forever. Heracles -or- Hercules: The heroic demigod who slew the Hydra, entered the underworld and who also carried Cerberus back. He is one of very few who ever returned from the underworld. Hypnos: A son of Nyx and the personification of sleep. Lethe: One of the five rivers of the underworld, symbolizing oblivion. It flows through the cave of Hypnos and merges with the river Styx. Obol -or- Obolus: The coin paid to Charon in order to obtain passage across the river Styx. Orpheus -or- Orfeus: A gifted musician who entered the underworld to retrieve his wife Eurydice. He charmed Hades and Persephone with his music, and became the only mortal ever to return from the underworld. Persephone -or- Proserpina: A goddess kidnapped by Hades to become the queen of the underworld. She is the symbolizes vegetation and rebirth. Styx: The river that separates Earth from the underworld. This name also refers to the goddess of the river Styx, daughter of Nyx and Erebus. NEW NAMES![]() Elysium: The special part of the Underworld reserved for heros and the righteous. Hecate: An ancient goddess associated with witchcraft and the Moon. Melinoe: A nymph, bringer of nightmares and madness. Orthrus: The brother of Cerberus, but with only two heads instead of three. Sisyphus -or- Sisyphos: A Greek king, punished by Zeus to spend eternity in Tartarus, forever pushing a boulder up a hill, only to have it roll back again. Tantalus -or- Tantalos: An criminal condemned to spend eternity in Tartarus, tortured by having food and water forever just out of reach. Tartarus -or- Tartaros : The lowest dungeon of torment in the Underworld. Thanatos: The daemon personification of Death and inexorable fate, although once overpowered by Heracles/Hercules. Vulcan -or- Hephaestus: Roman God of fire and smoke, son of Jupiter/Zeus, nephew of Pluto/Hades. As of the writing of this post, the current tally (which can be viewed here), is Styx and Cerberus by a long shot. So, which name(s) will you vote for? You can vote for as many names as you want, and you can vote once per day. We just may be able to turn the tide, should the goon hive-mind all agree. Cast your vote! UPDATE!![]() Several names have been added to the ballot! However, none of them really matter besides Vulcan. Fiendish Dr. Wu posted:
That was 2 days ago (as of this edit), and now, Vulcan is reigning champion with only 9 days left. All of these new names are pretty awesome, but honestly stand no chance against the mighty Trekkie force. At this point, I think it's best to ignore all of the more obscure names and focus on dethroning Vulcan - as it makes no sense in the context of what Pluto and the surrounding mythology represents. ![]() Vulcan and Styx Vulcan or Cerberus If we do not dethrone Vulcan, the results will be one of those two options. I find it disappointing Styx and Cerberus will make the cut just because they're the most familiar sounding. It should be Cerberus and Erebus, gotta follow that rhyming.

While Cerberus is the obvious choice, the other should be called Persephone because it's the coolest sounding. And Orpheus, come on, that would be silly it sounds like orifice.

I voted for Acheron to keep the rivers of Hades thing going and Styx is too obvious, and for Eurydice (even though I know it won't win) because there's something cool about that story being associated with one of the furthest out objects in our solar system. Might trip out a future astronaut going to another star as (s)he passes it one day.

Man, I'm not sure a dwarf planet that is neither the closest, nor the largest, nor the smallest, nor the furthest of the dwarf planets is worth all this attention. Voting Cerberus and Erebus because they rhyme. I would vote for Hypnos and Thanatos (twin brothers of sleep and death, respectively), except they left out Thanatos for some mysterious and stupid reason.

Styx, because they are a lame 80s band and I think NASA should start ironically naming every new moon or planet after things that are terrible but still kinda campy and fun. The next new planet to be discovered should be named Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Luth fucked around with this message at Feb 12, 2013 around 01:01 |

I rather like Orpheus and Euridice, they go together. If we were starting from scratch the five moons should be the five underworld rivers, but that ship has sailed

It's a shame that Persephone is unlikely to win. Persephone being in the underworld is the mythological explanation for the seasons. Her mother is Demeter, the goddess of the harvest and she got super mad when Persephone went missing and let the earth turn cold until Persephone was found. Hades made a deal with Demeter that Persephone is allowed to leave the underworld for part of the year, so long as she returns. When Persephone is with her mother, the crops will flourish; when she returns to the underworld, Demeter becomes distressed and winter begins.

I voted for Styx (obviously) and Lethe, because that's also a name of a river in the underworld. I chose two river names because the two moons were discovered around the same time. Just so all you serious voters know, Cerberus, Eurydice, Heracles, Hypnos, Orpheus, and Persephone have already been used to name objects in the Solar System, and as a result will likely be rejected by the IAU if proposed by the astronomers running the poll. Personally I picked Erebus and Styx.
