Yeah I looked it up and for anyone else that's curious:

There are three items called "Category Change 1/2/3" that let you change your guys at level 20. 1 lets you pick from the 5 worst categories, 2 lets you pick from 8, and 3 lets you pick from 11 which include World Class and Superstar. You can get the third version from high levels of the target shooting shop/minigame.

Just to clarify on this post from earlier, Category Change 2 can upgrade to World Class, but not any of the super high level types, here's a screenshot of me upgrading my captain:

There's a separate set of items for upgrading your GKs, the first of which has 3 classes on it I'm assuming are Average, Exceptional, Spider, and then probably a second item I haven't seen yet for World Class and Super GKs.

has anyone figured out most or all of the training combos?

Do they have to be in a specific order like showboat - kid - exceptional or is it just the combination that triggers?

So far all I've been able to unlock are the easy ones that are just 3x of a dude and the one above. Which isn't useful, since most of my team is now WC or some specialist.

WC x3 doesn't do poo poo too, which makes no sense to me. I also can't afford 3x WC Goalie yet so I don't know if there's a thing for that, but I would quite like whatever one of the Keeper multipliers is if anyone's figured out what they are. I dislike having to buy useless bench players to unlock training multipliers, but I haven't lost a game yet and I'm 6 years into my 2nd playthrough so I'm about to hit the 999 cap on my lightbulbs. I have all the training combos unlocked and could type them out later (after sleeping, it's 4am where I'm at) if you still need them.
They don't need to be in a specific order, you just need to have the player types selected for training.

Anyone have any idea what various skills do? STAT Up is 30 to a stat, Ultra STAT is 100 to a stat. Longshot is the ability to take shots at longer distance.

But what are things like Playmaker, Terra Nova, Safety Play, Overlap, etc? Also, which of those miscellaneous skills are useful on which positions? I assume Longshot is always useful on Forwards, but what else should I be looking for to start beefing up my dudes?

I found this really annoying as I had no idea if I was about to put some rare skill on a player it was totally useless on so I just started dumping them all on my captain. The only non-stat skills that I've seen make a large, or even noticeable, difference are Longshot and Safety Play. Here's a list of the ones I have (minus Kick Up/Ultra Kick etc):

Longshot: Can shoot from farther away. (Insanely powerful on a good forward.)
Shot Blocker: Jump forward when blocking shots. (I have no idea why this is desirable?)
Raging Bull: Strengthens tackle at the expense of speed.
Tackle Master: Improves tackling ability.
Super Slider: Improves sliding ability.
Space Out: Emphasize space when moving.
Dynamo: Chase target when sensing danger.
Direct Play: Play without trapping the ball.
Long Throw: Can throw the ball farther.
Form Up: Emphasize formation when moving.
Fame Aura: Boosts the player's popularity.
Sneaky: Get fouls less often.
Equilibrium: Play well in all environments.
Rain Dance: Play well in the rain.
Snow Leopard: Play well in the snow.
Terra Nova: Play well on a dirt field.
Savannah: Play well on a grass field.
Sandstorm: Play well on a sandy field.
Ace: Greatly boosts FW stats.
Playmaker: Boosts centering quality. (No idea what that means?)
Dribbler: Become a better dribbler.
Safety Play: Increases clear distance. (Rather good on defenders.)
Iron Wall: Greatly boosts GK stats.
Free Runner: Dash faster without the ball.
Sharpshooter: Increases penalty shootout accuracy.
Roulette: Perform a roulette maneuver. (Despite equipping this I've never seen a player actually execute a roulette.)
Overlap: Run past a teammate and go on the offensive.
Headgear N: Become a ninja?! All stats +5%.
Headgear W: Become a wrestler?! All stats +5%.
Headgear B: Become a bear?! All stats +10%.
Headgear A: Become a king?! All stats +10%.
Headgear C: Become Chimpan Z?! All stats +12%.
Headgear K: Become Kairobot?! All stats +15%.
Headgear S: Become Sally Prin?! All stats +20%.

Yikes, that's not very promising. Does make me wonder how much work I have to do to actually get my team ready for those kinds of leagues if there's THAT much of a difficulty spike at that point. Good lord...

Not that some of the online stuff is much better. I just got absolutely annihilated in an online match with some Japanese team that's supposedly got a lower evaluation than my team - but is in fact MUCH stronger, with a lot of them wearing those special stat-boosting heads from that IAP Lucky Target minigame. Rather a surprise that - evidently that evaluation isn't quite as reliable as one might think for online play.

So yeah, may just stick with playing with my dudes as best I can for now, but lord knows how they expect you to get through some of this stuff without spending cash on the IAP medals. Lots of long-term work I guess, as well as that shifting of friends and what not. (And maybe just avoid some of the multiplayer stuff...)

WARNING! INTRUDERS DETECTED

Thank you for the skill list Wallet, it's a godsend.

If it's actually what it means in real life, "centering ability" refers to the ability of a player out wide to kick the ball into the area in front of the goal, for waiting forwards to poke it in.

It's great on wingers or wide forwards, depending on how good the simulation in the game is (probably not very, there's not even offside!) it might be useful on fullbacks as well if they love to get forward a lot.

Coming into this game from Football Manager is amusing in its own way, it took me a while to get comfortable placing forwards in midfield, the hints even encourage you to play people out of position. In FM very few players are at their full capability outside of their natural position, so putting a forward in defence usually just ends in hilarity and tears. Unless it's Peter Crouch.

I have bad news.

Most of my team is A ranked and I still have trouble winning National league games.

I have an A ranked WC Goalie, and I still get 5-6 goals against on almost all of the teams. I haven't figured out if it's skills I need to equip or what.

Other than auras, training your players up, and using good skills (a lot of the ones that don't give stats seem to ultimately be better than the ones that do), your formation makes a huge difference. A lot of the default formations, particularly the offensive ones, are terrible. Because of the way the AI works, your forwards mostly just chill out at the opposing goal waiting for some other player to deliver the ball to them so they can head/kick it in to the goal, which means that by using an X/X/4 or X/X/3 formation you're giving up however many player spots for redundant loiterers. Of course, you could be using a good formation already, but I have no idea.

If you get lucky with the little ball-kicking mini-game thing you can get an editable formation, but sparing luck you can just switch coaches for a year to get some passable ones. After trying a lot of different approaches with the editable formation, and then making a lot of minor changes from game to game, I've settled on this 3/5/2 formation that seems to do pretty well:

There is probably a stock formation that is similar or even exactly the same, since there seem to be a shitload of them.

Sort of as above, I was trying to use formations based on how real teams play soccer, and it didn't work all that well. My front midfielder is trained as a forward and scores as often as the real forwards, and the majority of the shots my real forwards make are rebound shots the midfield forward bounces off the opposing goalie (which is part of why Longshot is so good, for some reason shots from further out seem to be much harder for the goalie to catch so you often end up with a corner kick or a rebound). My defenders were originally spread out so one was on each wing, and then on the corners of the box, but the AI pretty much exclusively drives straight down the middle when it goes to shoot so clumping them up in the center like that seems to play much better.

Thanks for the info, I'm not all that up on soccer terminology. I'll have to see if that skill makes any difference now that I know what to look for.

This may seem stupidly obvious, but when you trained up your goalie did you max out his speed as well as his keeper skill? It seems to be important.

I did not max out speed, that is not obvious to me really. I figured all I needed was keeper.

At any rate, I think i'm at an impasse here with the game. I beat the National League, mostly. I won the tourney but I still can't beat some of the teams and I hit year 16. I'm still getting beat by the Sweetbreads, although i guess losing 0-2 is better than losing by a lot. :smith:

All my training is locked under coins. I haven't figured a single way of making any more coins since you don't get new coins for friends and honestly 3 friend matches an hour to make 3 coins... is not exciting me.

Is there a way to earn coins I haven't found out about? If not, I think I'm done here. I wanted to get enough coins to at least buy fast mode, but I've only made 52 coins in a full game and since they don't carry over, I basically have to idle the game all day at work and hit the yearly review summaries enough times to get coins right? I suppose I can do that and watch the players I have train up to L99 or something silly and then do hard mode but this is literally talking days worth of not even playing the game just to get to play the game again unless I'm really missing out on something.

What happens in the course of duty is up to you...
Online matches with friends give you one coin per match, much easier to farm up that way that idling really. For me idling doesn't work worth a drat anyways, I've only gotten more than 2 coins once ever regardless of how much real-time non-menu time has passed. [Edit] And I totally glossed over you already mentioning this, sorry. Sometimes you can get online stamina refreshes as a bonus for a match, and much like the coins on login being messed up, my online stamina seems to refresh way faster than it says it does. Also you only have to pay with coins for the training once, then it's back to lightbulbs, unless you're way past that and its just all coins now (which I didn't think ever happened).

A good tip for the coin training costs: there are two sponsors that cut down training costs - stack them and you'll only have to pay 9 coins for the unlock (and all the subsequent training is much cheaper too!). Combine that with the sponsor that makes buildings give 1.5x research, and you can get dudes trained up in a hurry. Right now I'm at a point where I've finished my second playthrough (and haven't cracked far into national 1 yet, but that's mostly me biding my time and training people up). I've got the option to purchase a new set of clear data after year 16 for 30 coins, so I'll likely end up doing that once I've trained up my dudes to the point where I'm happy with them.

If I actually unlock ability slots, do those carry over to the next game too? I think I'm gonna give it one more run through once I max out all the lower-level dudes after I get enough coins to unlock all the training slots again.

I've realized that abilities are what wins you games over raw stats. For some reason that "Ace" ability is a game changer. I was getting stomped by half the National League 1, then I put Ace on both of my FW's and suddenly they were goal machines despite having a lower Kick stat. Ace doesn't show up on the stats but either I got super lucky or it's a really awesome skill.

Items, purchased skill slots and skills do carry over from one game to another. Class changes do not, unfortunately, so you can't just pimp your starters into Superstars, but you could in theory save a ridiculous number of XP buff items and a full set of class changes and do it right off the bat eventually. Not really worth the time though. Infinity Gum might work too, it looks like permanent stat increases carry over, but would also take forever.

Also you get ninjas for beating some of the 5/5 requirements on each stage. That and once you beat the whole stage you get a level 3 job changer, which I guess sucks if changing someone to a Superstar doesn't carry over, which makes that little thing I did a bit stupid.

By beat the whole stage do you mean that if I went into the G rank cup and got 5/5 bonus requirements on each team it'd give me a Class Change 3 item? Or which cup do I get one from, it'll give me a goal for my last couple of years.

I'm still trying to get anywhere useful in the game, but so far what I've found is that you generally want to have a dedicated combat team and make everyone else into workers. For your workers, you really only need one factory per hotel area supplying goods to the visitors (as they sell for quite a bit of money). Something that looks like the following (= is a road, F is a factory, P is a processing plant, H is a house, C is crop growing plot) will have workers that constantly refill the factory from the processing plants, while workers on the other side of the divide refill the plots and the processing plants. Surround your hotels with decorations to make aliens like your area more, and remember that you've got a hell of a lot of free space lying around - spread out so that you can concentrate your workers on individual tasks.

code:
                HHHH
               P====
Aliens here =F==P CC
              HH
Exploring gives a lot of money and research. Try to use that to get some of the higher end manufacturing goodies so that you make more money more quickly. More money means more levels and better gear, after all. Also remember that you can explore alien worlds pretty easily in the early stages to get more crew to work your farms.
