State beats Clemson 6-3; even the requisite Boulware homer didn't hurt. Only used two pitchers as well—big gamble but this time it paid off. Hard to overstate the importance of winning the first game in pool play. Now Clemson has to win both, and hope for State to drop their remaining two to have a shot at advancing.

Alternatively if someone feels like heading into Birmingham proper, they should definitely hit up Ranelli's for a richman poboy. Total dive place but god drat do I love it.

Hoover can burn right to hell. That place is a baseball nightmare for Carolina. SC vs Vandy in the elimination game tomorrow. Gonna be a major battle of who wants more to just say gently caress it and go home to get ready for the NCAA tourney.

UVA wins the morning game 8-2 over GT, they're both 1-1. GT will want VT to win tonight, UVA will pull for FSU. (Perversely, this UVA win was a good result for VT.) edit: I was wrong about the tiebreaker: in the event of a three-way tie, the first tiebreak is the winning percentage in conference play, not the seed. So UVA would win any three-way tie on its side of the bracket, even with FSU (which is impossible now, but whatever). That's kind of dumb and invalidates the divisions but any tiebreaker will be dumb in an unbalanced conference. e2: UNC is tossing Emanuel against Miami, a team which lost a series to BC. Indicates winning the ACCT isn't really a priority. (Though they are deep enough to win it anyway.) meanwhile Miami went with the bold strategy of not trying to compete for the title by throwing their #3 guy against UNC, and are predictably down 5-0 early. Miami would have to win both their other games, and UNC lose theirs, in order for this to work out for the Canes. really doubt Vandy or South Carolina wanted this one to go extras elentar fucked around with this message at May 23, 2013 around 21:30 |

Have to think this is the end of the road for Jim Morris. Miami will probably get a courtesy NCAA bid although they really don't deserve it.

South Carolina completes taking a steaming dump at the SEC tournament, which should honestly come as no surprise. We looked so bad we might have to hope our name/facilities will pull weight in regard to regional hosting.

Maroon and orange will always be hideous but Virginia Tech is rocking an 80s Padres-style throwback that almost, almost makes it work. Some of the players are even in stirrup socks. edit: Louisville about to go two-and-out in the Big East, that'll be the end of their national seed hopes. this VT-FSU game is great so far, total pitcher's duel. VT gets to FSU's Luke Weaver in the 7th, goes up 2-0. Noles bring in Gage Smith, who has just the absolute douchiest mustache. VT's starter staying in to try to finish out the shutout, probably not the best move. 2-1 now with 1 out and a man on 2nd. And FSU picks up the other, 2-2 going into bottom 9th. elentar fucked around with this message at May 24, 2013 around 01:37 |

Walkoff homer for Zagunis, Virginia Tech takes it 3-2. (take that, Gage Smith's mustache) So that means the Noles are out, and Georgia Tech out too. Three scenarios:
Not sure if this means anything for FSU's national seed. Even if they go 0-3, might still get one, though things get interesting if they do that and NC State runs the table, or if Indiana or Oregon look really dominant (or maybe even Mississippi State, if they win the SEC). Meanwhile Virginia Tech is borderline top 10 in RPI, and their chances of hosting are better every day. elentar fucked around with this message at May 24, 2013 around 01:50 |

State scores 4 without a ball leaving the infield in a preposterous first inning, Miami does less than nothing, Pack coasts 7-1. That eliminates the Canes, obviously, but also Clemson. However I expect Clemson to win tonight since they're playing for a hosting site, and UNC has absolutely nothing to play for; they may even play a B lineup to keep everyone fresh for State tomorrow and to avoid a potential ACC final as the fourth game in 4 days. Meanwhile Virginia Tech can move into the final in the next game with a win against Georgia Tech. edit: also I got the scenarios wrong yesterday. If VT loses this game they're out, then GT would advance to the final on an FSU win, and UVA would advance if they win. wow, Hokies go through. And they did it on pitching, too, which nobody would have figured. Will be curious as to who they start in the final, will probably be done by committee since they really don't have many candidates. elentar fucked around with this message at May 24, 2013 around 21:36 |

Clemson up 5-2 in the 5th after chasing UNC starter Benton Moss. Not really surprised about that, but I am surprised that UNC would put in actual good relief pitchers that they might need tomorrow night. If UNC has a weakness, it's the bullpen. edit: oh god I would love for UNC to rally and take this to extras. and still lose, obviously. haha, Carolina ties it in the 9th which means they have to burn another bullpen arm. Keep going, game! elentar fucked around with this message at May 25, 2013 around 02:35 |
