Cub Swanson - Featherweight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_szqLGCKjCQ#t=224s - KO Ross Pearson

Seriously how in the gently caress am I doing this write up?

Ask literally anyone on this forum a year ago if they expected Cub Swanson to not only be still in the UFC a year later but be in line for a title shot and they would've justifiably laughed in your face. Cub Swanson was not meant to be a good fighter, he was meant to be an upstart with terrible tattoos and an overworked body (look at that picture) most famous for losing to Jose Aldo in 8 seconds after Aldo opened with a double flying knee. He should not be here. Yet apparently Cub decided to spend 2012 actually winning fights, looking good in doing it, making everyone eat crow and he is on the precipice of a title shot.

5-3 in his WEC career with wins over no one of note, unless you like laughing at Micah Miller of the lesser Miller brothers, his losses were against to Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes aka the #1 and #2 featherweights in the world. However his third loss was a stoppage loss to Jens Pulver. In his last eight zuffa fights Pulver was 1-7. Cub was that 1. Swanson was absorbed into UFC and expected to quickly washout being stopped by Ricardo Lamas (aka now the #3 featherweight in the world) who had only one fight previously dropped to featherweight after an unimpressive 4-2 run at WEC lightweight. With that loss however, and given the time period, it was sure to be the end of Swanson in UFC.

It didn't happen. Swanson in 2012 went 3-0 against decent-great opposition (aka three solid midcarders). First was the rather uneven George Roop, who is the tallest featherweight on earth and no matter what gets to know he is the only man to KO The Korean Zombie. Swanson finished him. Then came Ross Pearson, an Ultimate Fighter winner and all round good fighter who had just debuted and defeated the hyped up Junior Assuncao. Swanson finished Pearson. Next up was Charles Oliviera, a BJJ master who was exposed by Jim Miller but had found a new home at featherweight. Oliviera had debuted as only a brown belt in the UFC but it was apparent instantly he was more advanced than 90% of black belts and one of the few fighters you would want nothing to do with on the ground. Swanson finished him. It is one of the most unanticipated finishing and victory runs in the UFC.

Next up for Swanson is the dangerous top ten feathweright Dustin "The Diamond" Poirier who was one fight away himself from a title shot before discovering just how loving good The Korean Zombie is. Originally it was meant to be Dennis Siver, the Russian-German kickboxer that clowned Nam Phan in his last fight with a Fitching of Demian Maia levels, but who injured himself training. Poirier is a dangerous fighter who has excellent grappling, submissions and striking and is looking to get back into the title picture after his TKZ setback. This is a test for Swanson,l and most people (fairly) would pick Poirier who himself would've been written up here if not for that Swanson's run has been unbelievable. This will be a good fight and both of these guys with a win are right back into the title picture alongside TKZ and Ricardo Lamas.

Jorge Santiago - Welterweight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML6aemEO60c - Jorge Santiago v Kazuo Misaki, WATCH THIS FIGHT. FIGHT OF THE YEAR 2010.

Let's get this out of the way - Santiago is synonymous with glass jaw. He is also the quintessential fighter who when they're outside the UFC looks like an unbeatable spectacular fighter (he is an unbelievably good grappler, and while outclasses managed to hang with Demian Maia for three rather dull rounds without looking in any real danger) and when they're in the UFC gets exposed by every fighter they get into a fight with. Santiago is one of the few fighters to have been knocked out from the guard, as in they were inside someone elses guard and were knocked out from the bottom. Yeah.

So why am I bothering to write this? Because drat it he's moving down in weight and we can hope against hope this time he makes good on his B-leagueness and puts on the fights he is capable of rather than being knocked out by Chris Leben, Alan Belcher, Brian Stann, Mamed Khalidov...

Santiago is taking this fight as a replacement for the uninteresting Justin Edwards against the relatively unknown Icelandic Gunnar Nelson. Nelson in his first UFC fight finished the midcard staple (well was, think he's cut now) DaMarques Johnson so could have potential. Everyone here would much rather Kazuo Misaki, his opponent from the video above which you should be watching, be in the UFC but sadly Misaki has announced retirement disappointing all of us. We have to make do. Besides Santiago might lose spectacularly again so that will get us a few laughs.

fatherdog" post="412336692 posted:

[Gunnar] Nelson also performed extremely well in the most recent ADCC (despite coming from a striking background) so he's generally well thought of as a prospect.

James Te-Huna - Light heavyweight

I like to use the phrase "best fighter in the world... for five minutes" a lot. There have always been these fighters in the UFC - BJ Penn was one, Joe Lauzon was one but then discovered cardio, Houston Alexander was one, Shane Carwin was/is one - James Te-Huna is the best fighter in the world. For five minutes. Admittedly his last fight, a three round demolition of The Mexicutioner Joey Beltran was great in itself I doubt anyone thinks Beltran can fight after five minutes either.

Te-Huna is 4-1 at LHW currently with his sole loss coming to top LHW contender Alexander Gustafsson, a fight Te-Huna was winning (in fact he very nearly had an RNC locked) until his five minutes (well, 3:30 in that fight) tank expired and he got choked out. Te-Huna is a Maori fighter, though his fighting home is Australia, and he has rather good striking and power. His problem of course is his cardio, he finishes fights fast because if he doesn't he collapses like a hand organ. This is ok with the tier of fighter he's been fighting, and in fact may continue, but he needs to sort this out if he wants to get to the next tier of LHW and look like a true contender.

Te-Huna's opponent is Ryan Jimmo, a 16-1 MFC import who has only lost their first fight ever with wins over B-staples Wilson Gouveia, Zak Cummings (who you can see on this season of The Ultimate Fighter!) and SOKOUDJOU. Jimmo debuted in the UFC with a record tying seven second knockout of Australian Anthony "The Hippo" Perosh who, much like Cub Swanson, had been on the most unlikely win streak possible that came to a thunderous stop. Perosh still rules though drat it. This fight has some Australia revenge undertones to it with Te-Huna looking to avenge Perosh and also Jimmo to maintain his very long win streak. Have no idea how this fight will play out, but should be fascinating to find out.

Matthew Riddle - Welterweight

Matthew Riddle is a stoner. He got popped in his last fight for fighting while stoned. Watch that gif and tell me he wasn't stoned then too even though he wasn't busted. He has also in a bizarre way turned into an entertaining fighter, one I used to hate because seriously watch that gif, but his fight at UFC 149 was the one redeeming feature of the entire loving card and then he got popped for being stoned for it and I love him for it anyway because gently caress UFC 149.

Riddle is a rarity amongst MMA fighters - EVERY one of his MMA professional fights has been in the UFC, no b-league experience. 7-3 (1) - the (1) represents no contest, it was the fight he won but then tested positive for weed on so the decision got overutrned - in his UFC/MMA career Riddle first debuted on The Ultimate Fighter reality TV series. He made his debut with, what until a few days ago, was the most brutal knockout in TUF history. I am trying to find video of it but failing, but it is horrifyingly brutal and Riddle is on record as right now saying his is more brutal than Uriah Hall's so that's going to be a fun debate. (edit: found this http://www.myspace.com/video/mother...-s-jaw/42270585 but it lacks the horrifying wheezing sounds Dan Simmler makes afterwards, his jaw was broken in three places).

Riddle isn't really great anywhere, he's just... Matthew Riddle. His striking is suspect, his grappling is above average but nothing to write home about, but he's a jack of all trades and entertaining for it. No one expects him to set the world on fire but that's what the midcard is for. We can't all grow up to be astronauts.

Riddle is fighting Che Mills this weekend, a fighter who seems to have been brought in to be killed by Rory MacDonald and they need to get rid of him now that he's served his purpose. Should be a good fight, maybe. We'll wait and see if Riddle got some good poo poo in England.

MATT loving RIDDLE IS A loving IDIOT THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE LOSE: SEE HERE http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/the_m...J#ixzz2KdsVSR8m AND HERE http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...4#post412336220 AS TO WHY.

UFC ON FUEL: ENGLAND EVENT YOUTUBE PRELIMS QUICK RUNDOWN

Terry Etim - Lightweight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TIH7vFyjjI - Terry Etim subbing Edwardo Faaloloto

6-4 in the UFC Terry is unfortunately currently most famous for being KO'd by Edson Barboza and doing his best impression of a tree on the way down. Etim is in actual reality a solid midcarder with good skills who has been unlucky more often than not. He is fighting "Renee Forte" who doesn't even have a wikipedia article yet in what I'm assuming is a gimme fight for his home British crowd. That used to be a reason to give no fucks but it took forever for TJ Grant to get an article and look how that turned out.

Paul Sass - Lightweight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uvqZZ68jbc - The Art of Pulling Guard, Paul Sass rules

3-1 in the UFC Paul Sass is a fighter to keep an eye on, then again we've had bad histories with spectacular grapplers who don't have much elsewhere (Charles Oliviera, Cody McKenzie and Dustin Hazelett spring to mind).

Nicknamed "Sassangle" because he has over a 13-1 career 9 finishes by triangle choke/triangle armbar (3 by heel hook!) in his last fight, undefeated at 13-0 at the time and looking like a grappling beast, he ran headfirst into Matt Wiman who flipped the logic on its head and submitted Sass with an armbar. Sass is fighting Danny Castillo, one of the lesser members of Team Alpha Male, so hope for more triangle grappling awesomeness on Sass' part.

Andy Ogle - Featherweight

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

hahahahaha he's fighting Josh "The Fluke" Grispi, I don't even care who wins whoever loses will make me happy.

(To explain my flippancy Andy Ogle is a British fighter who was on The Ultimate Fighter. He spent the entire season crying. Josh Grispi is now fast famous for a fight he didn't have - he was meant to fight Jose Aldo at UFC 125 for the featherweight title after riding a rather good win-streak. Instead he fought the then debuting Dustin Poirier, after Aldo pulled out injured, who outclassed Grispi striking in such a way that made it look like Aldo would've pulverised him, especially as he was training specifically for Aldo and Poirier was debuting at the weight after an uneventful 1-1 lightweight run in the WEC. Since then Grispi has lost more fights and his nickname of The Fluke is hilariously apt.)

Stanislav Nedkov - Middleweight

I'll be honest I was shocked to see this name so far down the card and actually didn't think I'd still be writing up at this point. Nedkov is 12-0 (1) in his MMA career, he has a loss to light heavyweight steroid powered tiger blooded beast Thiago Silva that was overturned when Thiago failed his test obviously. Nedkov is a Bulgarian prospect who seems pretty decent really and moving down to the talent void that is middleweight may be very good for him. He is fighing Tom Watson whose last UFC fight was losing to Brad Tavares, he is a veteran of BAMMA and Cage Rage, has a win over Maurilo "Ninja" Rua and losses to JT Money and Xavier Foupa-Pokam. Tom Watson must be some meta-joke to create the most b-league fighter in history. Nedkov should win this fight easily and given middleweight depth it may make him on the cusp of being a top ten fighter really.

Ulysses Gomez - Flyweight

fatherdog posted:

[Ulysses] Gomez was a talented competitor in Naga and Grappler's quest who took a while to turn pro because he wanted to maintain his amateur status for amateur boxing. He's fought mostly in Tachi Palace, and at one point there was a rumor he'd knocked out Fernando Vargas in a street scuffle, but I believe that rumor came from Tito so I would discard it along with anything else Tito ever said about anything at all.

Awesome post. I watched that Santiago/Misaki fight, and for the first round couldn't figure out what was so great about it. Then it got great!

But watching it reminds me of two things:
Fights in boxing rings are really awkward because people keep falling out of the ropes.
