The police involved have said they have no indication of a case of mistaken identity, and have emphatically said that the rumour printed in the South African media has not come from them. South Africa is really unsafe in general, violent crime is everywhere. I have a number of South African friends who were held up at gunpoint, or had their homes ransacked. it's not uncommon for people to carry hand guns with them for protection and live in ridiculous compounds. The police have also said Pistorius apparently had a history of 'domestic-related' call outs.

Right, wrong or indifferent, if you are using a gun to defend yourself, you don't fire one shot, then wait to see if it worked before firing again. If you feel you have a need to fire a gun, you need to keep firing it. That said, don't loving fire your gun if you don't know what you're shooting at, goddamn. Anyway, I dunno what the actual situation was, it may have been a tragic accident, may have been not an accident, but the fact that there were multiple shots fired isn't an indication one way or the other.
