South Africa probably changed since I lived there though, that was 1992.

Yeah, nationalism doesn't have to have formal representation to be present, nor does it have to be that extreme. It's the informal, everyday organic expressions that are way more dangerous than fringe party organisation (I don't understand why South Africans always assume that that sort of politics goes away once the political parties go away. Rainbow nation mythology I guess).

Anyway, to keep from derailing, the home invasions are some of the worst in the world for prevalence, but that's not really relevant when discussing the politics of moral panic and paranoia. Of course somebody who lives in a gated community would feel that unsafe - that's how the politics of fear works.

It's great that the police aren't going with the home invasion line. As some commentators have said, it would've been unlikely he be given the benefit of a doubt if he was of colour.
