I understand his paranoia, most people here who don't live in ultra expensive compounds are much worse off, I live in a cheap security village, there isn't much stopping 5 of them with AK47s, I've made peace that if it happens to us here, so be it, I just really hope its quick, daily news stories of home invasions, mutilations, rapes etc does not help the situation at all.

They poured boiling water down someone's throat the other day in a home invasion, it's pretty disturbing what's happening here.

My sister moved to Canada, from her stories, it sounds like another loving planet they live on, you can actually walk to the shop there, and you don't have to have burglar bars over all your windows, or electric fencing, or security guards, you don't have to be on guard 24/7 your entire life, I can't believe people can live that safe, no millions of poor, uneducated, angry Africans patrolling outside, always watching you, I can't even imagine life like that.

The issue is that its just so heavily, deeply ingrained into many South Africans, black and white, that it happens subconsciously all the time.

Crime is a hot topic cause the media plays it up like the middle-class is UNDER SIEGE, when it reality it's far, far worse in the poorer communities. People have to hide their money in their socks on payday, or just plain not eat because they will be mugged and assaulted on their way home through Diepsloot or whatever. Every week, not just once in a blue moon.

Either way it's really loving depressing because the government isn't taking a long-term approaching to solving the issues, merely beefing up the police by telling them to shoot to kill, and then saying "look we helped". And no, it's not any loving better in Cape Town.
