The Offer The stranger (was it the same person? No it couldn’t have been) said he came from a land far away. He said he made the trek to find warriors who would fight for him. This proposition seemed odd. Why should warriors go with this stranger to someplace they never heard of before? The stranger asked what they would want in return. They laughed at him. The stranger then offered them something so valuable that the group couldn’t turn down the proposal. What did the stranger offer? The stranger seemed to know exactly what the group most wanted. The stranger’s efforts paid off. When the stranger left, he brought with him a warrior ready to fight. The Journey Beyond The warrior traveled with the stranger for days until the warrior found himself lost. Soon the two of them came upon the stranger’s people. The stranger told the warrior that what they would see and witness was nothing they had ever experienced before. Entering the camp, the warrior found that what the Stranger said was true. The stranger’s camp had many different people and things in it. They spoke strange languages and acted odd. After a few minutes to let the warrior take in the strange surroundings, the stranger told the warrior that what came next would be slightly unpleasant. The warrior endured poking and prodding by people wearing all white clothing. The stranger’s people also talked with the warrior asking him various questions. Then finally the stranger had the warrior swallow a small round red object. The next day the warrior found himself able to understand the language of the strangers. The stranger accompanied the warrior on a large wooden ship and bid him good luck. After a few days of travel, the ship arrived at its destination. The warriors were offloaded at a small makeshift town. There they would be a rest for the day before meeting the person who lead them into battle. A little background information Recruiting for GURPS 4E game where warriors from different Earths are brought together to fight an evil empire. The idea for this game came from the GURPS Infinite Worlds entry for the Alternate Earth called Nergal. [quote="Infinite Worlds"] Every so often, a Patrol “wizard” – or even a genuine wizard, usually from ISWAT – recruits a band of adventurous locals and lead them into one or another dark realm to liberate slaves, destroy arms factories, and otherwise psychologically destabilize the rulers of this nightmare parallel.[/unquote] This is the inspiration for this game, but I’m making changes. Instead of adventurous locals, the group will be of warriors from other earths. The group of warriors will be led by an NPC (at least to start). The mission for this group remains the same. They will be going into enemy territory to fight the good fight. Character Creation Guidelines: Characters will be made with 200 points, unlimited disadvantages, and five quirks. The campaign tech level will be 3. TL 4 is the highest TL allowed for characters. I’m allowing non-humans into this game, but the race must follow these rules. First the race must be from a GURPS book (no custom races). Second, any racial template that has Appearance (hideous), Social Stigma (Monster), or some other disadvantage that would cause too many problems isn’t allowed. Although the game is about warriors, any character capable of fighting will be considered. If anyone wants to, they can submit spell casting characters. Anyone playing a wizard needs to abide by the basic spell casting rules in the characters and campaigns books. The mana level I’m planning is going to be low, so take that into consideration. Also any characters using clerical magic will have penalties to casting due to a weaker link to their deity. Disallowed: Allies, Contact Groups, Contacts, Patron, Dependents, Enemies, Pacifism, Sense of Duty, and Weirdness magnet. Also anything that is specifically tied to a character’s world (e.g. Social Stigma (criminal)) isn’t allowed. Wild cards are out. Cinematic options and unusual traits need to be cleared by me first (Weapon Master or Heroic Archer are OK). If I don’t say no, then I might assign an unusual background advantage to justify the trait. Wealth is standard TL 3 ($1000). I recommend using Signature gear to buy valuable gear. Mounts will be provided for those who don’t have them. Bringing your own mount is acceptable as well. Food and water will be provided for the group, anything beyond that needs to be bought. Character backgrounds should tell me what kind of Earth they came from. If its from an Earth that resembles our own, then just state that. Backgrounds should also explain what the stranger offered.. The offer could be made to a group the character belongs to or to the individual. Finally I would like to see explanations for the traits a character has (advantages, disadvantages, skills and so forth). A character will not be considered finished until there is both a background and a character sheet posted in the thread. Combat is a major part of this game, but if someone’s character just stands around when not in combat that character won’t be living long. If someone doesn’t post in a regular fashion (a day or two after updates), they will be warned to post more. After that warning, they might see their character meet an unfortunate end. This should explain everything one needs to know to apply to this game. If there are questions or comments, please post them in the thread. All characters start off with this Template: Soldier of the White Cross Army [-1]: Language: Esperanto (Accented/None) [2] Language: Akkadian (Accented/None) [2] Advantage: Patron (The White Cross Army) [15] Disadvantage: Duty (Almost all the time, Extremely Hazardous) [-20] Currently The game is in progress. Current roster of players and characters is as follows: Centurion Titus Pinarius Siculus - Roman Centurion played by Beardless Captain Saoirse Rionach – Selkie Pirate played by GoatLord Callianessa of Athens - Greek Centaur warrior played by Platonicsolid Thomas Grey - Gargoyle in it for the money played by Tran Peroz of House Suren - Cataphract from Persia played by Axe-man Giovanni Dario - English/Italian Champion for hire played by Glorified Scrivener Berkai - Mongolian mounted Archer played by Fraction Jackson Haakon Normandy - Norse Warrior Shaman played by Darius099 When the number of people in this game drops below seven I plan on recruiting for more people to fill up the ranks. For the eight players listed, please post your character sheet and background in this thread because I’m going to close the recruitment thread soon. All discussion and out of character chatter should be in this thread. When the main game thread is up, I’ll post a link in this thread.

Peroz of House Suren![]() Character Spreadsheet Biography The tent was a large one, all of the men in the room surrounded by servants and messengers. A tall man paced back and forth before the circle of lieutenants in front of a table with a map of the area. The map was covered with tokens and enemy movements. He slammed his fist on the table and looked at the others clad in scale mail around him. The man looked at the others and yelled, "We retreat again? There is no retreat this time. Do you expect to cross the Chinvat Peretum worthy with such talk?" He looked from person to person. Their armor clung to their body dirty and well worn the fighting just a few days before and caused them to lose the capital to the Byzantines had been humiliating. It almost was humiliating as Shah Hormizd IV had sent him women's clothes upon a setback against these very enemies. The rebellion had been successful against Hormizd IV and his son Khosrau II had fled to the very Empire that his father had wanted to defeat. It was a year later and the army of loyal supporters along with a Byzantine army came against Shah Bahram VI that stood before Peroz. Peroz had been there since the beginning, he was one of the great families of the Empire along with Shah Bahram. Commanding the Shah's Cataphracts in battle and protecting him since the start of the campaign. His connections had allowed him a great many things, but those days had ended. The last battle had almost been a route, the combined forces of the loyalist and Byzantines had almost overcome them completely. Many of his cataphracts had fallen in battle and there were not many left after the fall of the city. They were in a dire situation and they all knew it, and Peroz as always had a plan. He would flee with his Shah to the north if they overcame them, but there had to be a last battle one last situation. "My Shah, I assure you that we can defeat them. Ahura Mazda backs our cause, if we can overcome the evil of the Byzantines then we shall. Our cause is just and good." Peroz said diplomatically, he was not the great tactician of Bahram, but he understood that they could not overcome the numbers. They had been flanked and were trapped. To attack would preserve honor and then when it failed Peroz to enact his new plan. The Shah nodded along with his commanders. They all knew the undertones but saying this to the men would make them fight that much harder. They filed from the tent and told the dead men that there was hope. They both watched the battle from afar and the troops fighting and dying for their Shah. Dressed in their drab clothing they turned from the battle, the men would die with honor and heroically, but it was time to leave. The two turned away from them with a small contingent of soldiers and road North to safety. They had nothing now, but war wary equipment and their lives. Then came the hard part, for months they went from noble to noble, asking for audiences and using their wealth to continue to try to raise an army. Court life was filled with all the intrigue and political viciousness that Peroz had come to know. In 590 the assassins blade finally found its mark and so Peroz fled from the Turkish city in the middle of the night. Clopping along the broken road, Peroz tried to think of a new way to cement his rise to power, but his wealth and prestige was gone. Beharm had been his best bet to even return to his former position as an adviser to the Shah. That is when the stranger found him walking the opposite way. "Hail Arteshtaran, I will yield to you." The stranger moved to the side of the road as if he was leading a company of Cataphract. Peroz's eyes narrowed at the man and he stopped his horse. "Do you seek to mock me? Sassanid might no longer honor me, but my sword does." He unsheathes his curved blade and levels it at the man. The stranger smiled to the man and in his strange accent said, "Not at all. I see a proud Arteshtaran that is wasted in this wandering. I could take you to a place where you could regain all you lost." He gives a low bow and Peroz lowers his sword to his side. "Tell me more." Is Peroz's reply to the man in a calm and measured voice. pre:Name: Peroz Surena CP : 200

Haakon Normandy![]() Harald Bluetooth made his first and only attempt to Christianize the Danes in 965. He was opposed by Orvar Leadensill, and unlike the history of some Earth's, Harald was cast down and executed for rising against the true gods. Orvar and his shamans spread like wildfire in the aftermath of the war, conquering through Europe, down into the Middle East, and up through even the southern portions of Siberia. By 1300, their system of Jarl's and city states were the dominant form of government and culture across mainland Europe. While the power of the Danes began to wane in the Middle East with the beginning of the rise of the Ottoman dynasty, the rest of the continent and islands were firmly entrenched in a new world power. Despite their firm control over the culture and territory of Europe, storm clouds gathered on the horizon. The Mongolian Empire was beginning to form, the beginnings of the Golden Horde raiding deep into China and other parts of Asia. They had begun to test the edges of the territory of the Danes, and diplomacy between the two groups was nearly as strained as the relations with the Ottomans. Born in 1312, Haakon Normandy is the son of the prosperous Jarl of Milan. Haakon was raised in his youth to be replace his father. To this end, he spent a significant amount of his early years learning the language and culture of other important empires, and being trained by the seers and shamans in the true gods. Haakon quickly grew into his frame as he journeyed to the edges of the Empire, and the tales of the great wars of expansion that followed the overthrow of Harald Bluetooth stirred him to a new calling. Haakon recruited a crew and had built a mighty two masted longship. His journeys took him to far shores, explored years before by the few brave enough to cross the ocean in search of unknown lands. In meeting the peoples of this new world came danger, and Haakon's curiousity and open nature would eventually lead him to suffering. A disease of the strange peoples of the forests of the coastline would take hold of him, racking his body with pain and awakening a terrible beast inside of him. This was the first time Haakon would experience the veil of terrible rage, as his crew fought their way back to their ships from their winter encampment. By the time they were put to the open sea, Haakon was too sick to stand. He clung to life by the barest threads when they made landfall back in the Empire again, and only great magics of the gods were able to save him. His fathers shamans, in time, discovered a root that would keep the disease at bay. Thankfully, the root was not a rarity for him, but they all whispered now. Countless whispers behind his back about the disease of his blood, and a more worthy son having been born in his absence, and that he had been cursed by the gods. The seers that had trained him disagreed with the shamans, but their voice was not that of the gods, and he fell into melancholy. Soon, however, he would receive a sign. He knew immediately that the gods were giving him a chance to prove himself again when the man came to Milan with an offer to his father. Haakon never asked what the man promised his father, but he would also never forget the look of relief in his eyes at his eldest son's agreement to leave. pre:Name: Haakon Normandy

Giovanni Dario![]() "Benvenuti alla Settimana di lavoro." "I don't care what the Captain says about Lady Galaeaza's husband, uncles or brothers. I lost the eye in the second battle of Firenze, pulled this here dagger out and killed the bastard with it. Now you gonna finish that wine?" Born to an English mercenary and an Italian camp follower, Giovanni has spent his life practicing the family trade, both as a mercenary soldier and a champion for hire in the trials by combat that define his Italy's legal system. Possessed of a tomcat's attitude towards life, he has gladly followed his passions, no matter what sort of danger they've led him into to. While this may have cost him an eye, the remaining one has had a superb view of dozens of noble bedchambers. Lately in the Service of Machiavelli, Consul of the Florentine Republic, Dario was waiting for the end of a long siege when the stranger came into the company's camp. The man offered up a medicine chest containing a cure for the plague that had ravaged the troop and the city. He was not the first to do so, but his was the first offer that was genuine. No longer facing the certainty of a lingering sickbed death, Giovanni agreed to follow the man. The Captain agreed, perhaps a little too eagerly, to release Giovanni from his contract. The stranger might be the devil, as many of the soldiers said - but Giovanni owed him his life - and it did sound more interesting than waiting out the rest of the siege. Besides, it promised to be a land where he had a clean slate, few obligations and no reputation among the womenfolk to overcome. Notes: Giovanni's timeline is similar to our own, with a longer lasting and even more culturally influential Roman Empire. Firearms technology has advanced at a slower rate than on Homeline. Trial by combat and gladiatorial games are commonplace. Tech Level is 3+1. Thomas Grey![]() You ever have that urge to just go off and kill some high brow bastard for givin' you the evil eye? Well the short version is that's how I ended up here, but I get the feelin' you lot wanna' hear the ugly bits afore and between. So you just start up a tab and I'll gladly fill your ear. See where I come from is a bit different from your Earth. Over there you soft types ain't the only sods about. I personally seen high brow better than thou sorts with pointy ears and voices more used to singin' than swearin', short angry blokes with more coin than god hisself, and a handful of other fine gents more akin to my company. Speaking of those more of my type, had myself a partner once. A pretty bird with green skin and teeth bigger than mine. Mean ol' gal she was, liked to bite the marks to scare 'em out of playin' the hero. Now you might think that was me goin' off on a yarn, but it's part of the point I'm makin'. Where I'm from, a fella' sproutin' horns or a fine ol' tail like mine would hardly raise an eyebrow. Now don't get me wrong, it was more than just a world where the bloke across the bar might be an honest to god troll. See it was also a place where being born as something the blue bloods call ugly or savage means you get to live in the muck and squalor. Now who in their right minds would call this ol' mug ugly is beyond me, but apparently I fit that bill. Now this left me with just a two options as I see it. I coulda' learned to bow and scrape for whatever the rich bastards were willin' to toss to the gutter, or I could put a blade to their throat and take what was owed. If you been payin' any attention at all you know which I went for. Now life as a tough ain't exactly easy, but when you have a charmin' temperment like mine it can be a lot of fun. You see, I learned pretty early on that I like a good scrap. What's more, I found I was good at it. So when it comes time to give a less than generous client a bit of persuasion, they'd call on me. I'd have me a laugh with whatever poor sod they hired to guard 'em, then the real fun would start. Now believe me, when you got one of those dainty lords up against the wall they'll believe anythin'. Used to like to lick my lips and talk about how hungry I was, then sniff at their perfumed collar a bit like I was a dog sizin' up his next meal. I still get a grin out of remembering the look on their faces. Blokes like me ain't known for long and prosperous lives though, so it came as no surprise when the watch showed up at my door one fine evenin'. Now, I spent time in the king's own inn before, but that last time was different. Some posh halfwit got his throat slit in my alley, and the watch figured I was as good a choice to hang as any. Didn't matter that someone else did the knifework. Now I killed in my time, but always other toughs tryin' to muscle me out. The marks were off-limits, never anythin' more than bruises. Now I know what you're thinkin'. Didn't I say that I wanted to open up some dandy for lookin' down his nose at me? Yeah, but I ain't dumb enough to act on that kinda' thing. I knew well as any that a lordlin' lyin' in the gutter meant someone was to hang, and I never planned to do the swingin'. All the same, I found myself waitin' for my day with the hangman. Of course you already know that day never came. We all got our story 'bout our mystery recruiter, but for me the offer was simple. I got to skip the noose, and they got another idiot that knows how to handle himself. Ain't all bad though, I still like to fight and I might even make enough coin to set myself up as a proper lordlin'. Wouldn't that be a laugh? pre:Attributes Strength (ST): 12 Max HP: 14 Dexterity (DX): 12 Max FP: 11 Intel (IQ): 10 Will: 11 Health (HT): 11 Speed: 5.5 CP: 0 Move: 5 Total Points: 85 Cultural Familiarity Medieval England Languages English (Native) Esperanto (Accented/None) Akkadian (Accented/None) Private Sign-Language (Broken/None) Advantages 80 Ambidexterity 5 Extra Attack 2 50 Damage Resistance 2 10 Enhanced Melee Parry 5 High Pain Threshold 10 Disadvantages -30 Inc. Callianessa of Athens![]() ![]() Athens, beacon of civilization, home to people and races from across the civilized world. Temple to the Gods and to learning, hub of trade, defender of all Greece. A fine city to be born into in any age. Except when it was occupied. That's the city Periumus and Hesione brought their daughter Callianessa into. Athens had labored under Assyrian rule for several centuries, a rule which didn't crush the city but time had made chafe. Periumus could conduct his olive oil trade, Hesione could continue her gold and silver work, Callianessa could attend the plays at the forum and the discussions of philosophers in the Acropolis. She'd always get look, a young centaur among the many human students. Centaurs were, admittedly, a distinct minority among the population of the city, roughly equal to cylopses but still only a few percent at best. Calli always appreciated when the odd gorgon or minotaur or lamia would drop by, because then /she/ wouldn't be picked out for some philosophers argument about the nature of the Gods. Calli never had much of an opinion of the gods. They seemed like people with lots of power, really. Some of them were nice, some were nasty, and some just seemed to be jerks. No, she stuck with the practical, things of this world. She knew her mother had been a soldier, in the city guards before the Assyrians replaced them entirely. Calli even got lessons in archery on the small plains outside the city. When she was fifteen, the Greek armies swept in, wresting control of the city back from the Assyrians. Spartans and Macedonians, Cretans and Thracians, despite their troubled history with Athens, remained Greeks. The army always sought fresh new bodies to replenish its rank, and the youth of Athens eagerly stepped up to perform their patriotic duty, for Athens and all of Greece. Thus did Callianessa become a hippotoxotes marching for the heart of Assyria. Callianessa and her unit got put on ships - ugh - and sent to Egypt, flanking through Tanis and Pelusium, spending years fighting and marching through Judah and toward Damascus. Every day worked to temper the excited foal into a hardened woman. Calli saw her friends die, her enemies too, often from her own arrows or sword. Those very same comrades gave her strength to continue. Be they Athenian or Spartan or Corinthian, human or centaur or lamia or minotaur, they were all here to right the wrongs done to Greece. (It didn't, of course, occur to them that they themselves might be seen as invaders.) Ten years of fighting brought the southern army to Gozan, a city on the upper Euphrates, when a courier reached them. The northern army had reached Nineveh, finally breaking the Assyrian empire. Nobody knew quite what to do, one all the celebrating was done. The larger army mustered out, sending many units back to their homes. Calli traveled with some across Asia Minor, as they broke of one by one until finally she arrived alone in Athens. The city remained much as she'd left it, worse for wear, better for improved care and its own freedom. Remains of the major battle - and some later skirmishes - with the Assyrians lay mouldering on the hills and mountains outside the city. Through the street to the modest family home and Callianessa finally saw her parents. Where once she'd been a spirited, troublesome child she was now a battle-hardened warrior, and a full grown woman. The former soldier revisited her old haunts in the city, the theaters and the Acropolis. Both literally and figuratively, she didn't fit. Trotting anxiously through her family home and her mother's workshop, a God appeared. Ever ambivalent to the Gods, Callianessa startled. Who else could appear out of nowhere? Who else would dress to strangely? And who else would claim that there was another Athens, threatened by a far greater Assyria. Calianessa posted:Name: Callianessa

Centurion Titus Pinarius Siculus![]() Titus Pinarius Siculus was born in Sicily in 86 BC and lived a fairly uneventful life before joining the Roman army in 70 BC. He eventually served with Legio XIII Gemina in 57 BC. He served all throughout the Gallic wars. He was wounded at the Siege of Gergovia, and served with distinction at Alesia. By the year 45 BC, he had been promoted to Centurion, been wounded three times, and had been mustered out of the legion twice. When a strange man appeared and offered him a chance to take up arms and cover himself in glory once more, he proudly accepted. Captain Saoirse Rionach – Selkie Pirate![]() ![]() You want to know how I got here, do you? I suppose I'd best start at the beginning then. Time was I was just yer average Selkie, spending my days huntin' fish and dodging whales and so on. Occasionally I'd make a trip up on lad ta find a nice ruddy laddie or lass and give 'em a good row. Sometimes some boy would get clever, maybe he heard some stories somewhere, and he thinks he can snatch my skin away and hide it somewhere, get himself a lovely new wife. Bunch of right bastards. 'Course I'm not some muddle-headed lass to fall for any of that nonsense. If I was feeling generous, or if he managed to give me a particularly good ride, I might let him off with just a warning. Otherwise I'd take away a little piece of him for trying to take away a piece of me. That was a long, long time ago though. One summer day I was having a sort of family picnic on a beach just outside Galway. Just me an' my husband Murtagh, and our daughters Muirín, Aoibhín, and Niamh. Some scurvy son of an otter sneaks up and tries to snatch our skins away. Husband catches 'im in the act and the bastard slits his throat and runs off with my daughters' skins. Apparently some rich fops'll pay heaps o' gold for Selkie pelts. Some people, eh? So I carried my dying husband into the waves and a swore to him that I'd find the bastard that did this, take back what he stole, and make him sorry he was ever spawned. That bit proved harder than I would have hoped. I managed to catch rumors of the bastard, but he'd hopped a boat to the new world, and I knew it would be a long chase, and I'd need to be properly equipped. I had to pawn my husband's skin, but I'm sure he'd've wanted t' help any way he could. Got me enough to set my daughters up in a comfortable house – though it pained me to think of leaving them on the land like that – got me a set of quality weapons commissioned, and got me a fine ship that could take me anywhere I had to go. Assembling a crew wasn't much trouble for someone like me, as I'm sure you can imagine. We chased the thief from port to port across the Caribbean and beyond. Got even harder once he started selling my daughters' skins. Only ever sold 'em one at a time, he did. Least as far as the rumors went. And whenever that much money changed hands, the rumors were sure to follow. So now we had four separate trails to chase. Turned to piracy to keep things going. And because it can be a hell of a lot o' fun. Been all over the world, we have. From Havana to China to India an' Africa an' everyhin' in between. Seen all kinds of strange an' wondrous sights. Been at it for years upon years. Never managed to catch that bastard, but never gave up the hunt. Then one day this stranger shows up just as we're making port. Says he's from a far away land, and he wants me to come fight for 'im. I tell him I've my own quest to worry about. He says he knows, tells me he can get my daughters' skins for me if I help him. I tell him it's not good enough, he has to give me the bastard that stole them, too. He says he can help with that as well. I tell him he's got a deal. Not really sure why I believed him. Not really sure I do, t' be true. But I was running dry on other leads, and the chance was too good to pass up. Besides, if he lied to me, what's one more human bastard to flay? ======== Saoirse comes from a world very similar to our Earth, specifically from around the mid 1500s. The big difference is that all the myths and legends are real. Selkies and trolls and dragons and so on live out their lives, though they are fairly rare, and your average human peasant may go their whole life and never see such a creature, or not know it if they do, but they'll probably know somebody who has, or at worst know somebody who knows somebody. There is enough evidence that anyone knows for a certainty that such beings do exist. Magic exists as well, in small pockets here and there. Mostly the mana level is none or low, with the latter being more common, though humans with the talent to use it are as rare as anything else. There are a very small pockets of normal mana scattered all over the world in the usual magical places. pre:Saoirse Rionach
