![]() Welcome to the thread for the best FPS, best RPG, and best horror game ever. You are a nameless marine who has woken up from cryo to find laser monkeys, insane hybrid human aliens and a rogue AI ruling the faster than light starship Von Braun. Excluding one other survivor, all humans lie dead and your only way to discover what happened to the Von Braun and Rickenbacker is to search for recorded PDAs, often left near the bodies of the slain. What to do in order to make SS2 moddable: 1. Patch up with ss2tool (5.1 or newer). this will make sure all the files are updated to their most recent version some of the new mods require this, so do it before you start installing mods. just run the tool and point it to your SS2 install, everything else should be done automatically (you need to be connected to the internet, as the tool is a webinstaller). If you want to use the multiplayer, enable it in the options; but be warned, it is buggy. 2. If you have already patched your game with ss2tool 4.9 or older, YOU MUST delete drvmgt.dll, iface.crf, intrface.crf, mesh.crf, obj.crf, strings.crf, SHOCK2.GAM, allobjs.osm from your System Shock2 folder BEFORE using the latest ss2tool. To actually add mods to the game, unpack them to the DataPermMods folder. Essential Mods for Purists: SHTUP- Replaces a bunch of common and not so common objects textures. Mirror Four Hundred- Ups the resolution of world textures while remaining faithful to the original. Mirror Vurt's Space- Remember how pretty space is? Well now you won't forget. Mirror SHMUP- Increases the quality of the music. How? I dunno a wizard did it. Mirror Earth dynamic sky- Makes the earth's sky you see near the beginning fancy and dynamic. Additionally you will need to edit the cam.cfg file and add enhanced_sky 1 into a new line. Mirror Updated Bindings - Not really a mod but applies some more modern bindings to the game. Those mods stick to the vision of Irrational Studios and Looking Glass Studios. These mods enhance but stray a bit from the original concepts: Rebirth- Makes many NPCs not look like rear end. Mirror Anomalies, Discrepancies and outright Bugs- General bugfixing and rebalancing mod, but attempts to stay true to the intention of the developers Mirror (This one mixes up balance in questionable ways. Use it or lose it) Vurt's Space with Earth - alternate version of the hires space mod, but requires ADaoB posted directly above. Tacticool-Makes your rooty tooty point and shooty weapons purtier. Mirror Cutscene Rebirth- Increases the resolution of the intro cutscene, where Goggles wakes up from cryo. Mirror Zylon Bane's Healthbar Mod - A mod with two versions: Vague Healthbar turns it into a percentage with OPTIMAL, DAMAGED, and CRITICAL given instead of a precise readout. No Healthbar is pretty self explanatory. Torrent of all of the above, courtesy of Drifter. Alternative link for those who cannot access The Pirate Bay. Note: All of these mods are pretty much in various states of WIP. Being Abandonware for over 10 years will do that to you. If you spot that any of these mods have been updated or if you find a mod you think is a worthy addition, mention it in the thread or PM me. Troubleshooting: McCoy Pauley posted:If the UI is too small at 1080p, edit cam_ext.cfg and replace: AlternateNu posted:When running ss2tools v5.0, click the box to enable "safe mode" installation. SystemShock.org posted:Open the file cam_ext.cfg from your game folder in notepad. What about that Le Courbeau engine patch that came out a while ago? Is that needed? Nope! That's been integrated into the GOG download. Man this weapon degradation and the the constant spawning of enemies is annoying. Is there a way to reduce either? Yes although you would be missing the entire point of the game you big baby. Check the unofficial forums posted below. Should I use a Mod Manager? No, they haven't been updated to the Le Courbeau/2.4 patch. What about System Shock 1? Still abandonware! You can download it here Further links: GOG Recommended Mods- From which I stole my list from Unoffical System Shock 2 Forums- If you need or desire any other mods this is probably the place to go. If you have any suitable mirrors to the above listed mods, let me know. Lord Lambeth fucked around with this message at Apr 4, 2013 around 02:12 |

I would like to know how the hell the rights got released. I mean, up till now, I thought they were held by some law firm that handled the Looking Glass Studios close down and had no intention of doing anything with it. As with most games I never thought I would have the chance to play properly, I probably spoiled myself on major plot points already. But still, I loved the first Bioshock (Warts and all. I still maintain that 'Would you kindly' was a genuinely well done plot twist.), and would like to at least experience the game that many say that Bioshock was dumbed down from.

This game owns owns owns. It's my first time and it is legitimately unnerving and creepy despite (or maybe even in part due to) the dated graphics. Level design is clever, the atmosphere is thicker than a dock workers sandwich and it doesn't treat the player like an idiot. In fact it treats them really badly; enemies want to kill you, the environment is hostile, resources are scant and there isn't a quest marker in sight. It's funny that this was re-released the same week as Aliens: CM. One being a cynical cash in consolised corridor shooter that has almost every problem going with modern games and the other being a superb example of how good games can be. SS2 almost looks better than Aliens as well.

SS2 is one of those games that doesn't neglect the power of audio, and it's utterly incredible for it. And it's the only survival game I've played where you are basically hosed the entire game, you do get more powerful but you're never at a point where you trivialize the threats. I love it and am glad people are trying it for the first time.

Love the artwork that you used for the OP, the creative vein of System Shock still inspires artists and gaming developers around the world... maybe someday we'll get a proper sequa-bwahahaha no that insurance company would never sell. I'm SUPER SURPRISED that they let GOG and this mystery company sell it and I can only hope this means good things for the a long dormant IP.

Was the gog version just released or something? I remember EA being precious about it being re-released. Or was that something else? I just remember that the game was a pain in the rear end to get running on modern systems, cutscenes wouldn't work and it was super crash happy.

As I understand it Dead Space started its life as System Shock 3, which would explain a lot. My first fear would be that even if a new proper System Shock ever did come to exist it would be good for all of one game but still not as good as SS2, and then EA would immediately warp it and run it into the loving ground like Dead Space 3 seems to be doing. e: ^^^ yeah, it just came out on GOG with the modern patch applied that makes the game actually run, fixes cutscenes, allows proper widescreen support, unbreaks multiplayer, etc. The OP could be a little clearer about that. According to that article EA's rights to System Shock reverted back to the defunct Looking Glass Studios a little while ago... that means it's all owned by the same insurance company. If that insurance company plays its cards right it could be very, very rich. In the past when people tried to talk with them in the development of what would become Dead Space it appeared that the insurance company was being unreasonable to the point of demanding way more money than the IP was worth to license it. As the IP has languished in obscurity and the generation that loved it gets older and older perhaps they've finally seen the light and realized "uh, hey, if we don't make money on this now...it might become utterly worthless". All speculation or whatever but man that's what I'd love to think! Kraustofski fucked around with this message at Feb 15, 2013 around 07:15 |

I was noticing that it seems like the GoG version comes defaulted with coop available; is there any special voodoo needed to get this working (like setting up a VPN or running hamachi) or is it something super simple? Cause I'd really be down to do some SS2 coop. VVVV edit: I would, but I haven't slapped down the money yet. Even though it's $10 right now, I'd like to figure out if it's something simple or if it's going to be some port forwarding nightmare before I buy it. Crossposting from the gog thread. So here's my character planner. It's fairly straightforward and runs in Excel. Basically, change any values that are hilighted in green, and it will calculate how many of the game's cyber-modules you've used. If a green cell turns yellow, it means that you haven't entered a number high enough to account for path/training prerequisites. Difficulty level is also accounted for, as training costs increase massively the harder you set it. Bear in mind that the cyber-module limit is literally as many as there are in the entire game, so unless you know every map like the back of your hand, leave a bit of a buffer. First-time players might want to leave a buffer of 150-200, because there are a LOT of hidden modules.

Pure OSI playthroughs amount to "hit everything with a wrench because you can't afford to replicate more psi hypos, and also you can't afford upgrades to make you good at hitting things with a wrench, either." Some of the support powers are pretty nice, but skip the esper poo poo and pack some real weapons. The energy/exotic weapon paths tend to be pretty niche, but they still beat trying to plink your way through engineering and cargo with your puny freeze ball.

My first time playing it, probably around 2006 or so, I'd just bashed in the face of the first hybrid and the atmosphere had got me by the balls more than it had any right to. I crept into the hallway where that wall panel explodes for a cheap jump scare, and as I was busy stuffing my heart back down my throat I backed into the view of the security camera in that room. At the time, I didn't really understand stealth elements (MGS was probably the only stealth game I'd played) and it hadn't quite registered that there were really going to be stealth-based elements in this. Apart from which I had no idea what the gently caress was going on, but what threat could a security camera pose when there wouldn't be anyone on the other end? The whole ship's been deserted/infected, right? So after sitting there staring curiously at the camera focusing on me for several seconds I hear a moan from behind and turn around to completely poo poo my pants at 5 or 6 hybrids having materialized from around the corner and already in melee range, apologizing profusely as they beat my corpse into a thick stain on the ground. I shut off the game and I think the next time I launched it was a few months later.
