TO VICTORY!

GAMEPLAY TIPS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR EXPERIENCE MUCH BETTER, READ THIS

PARRYING - The game does not explain how you parry very well. You press the left stick in the direction on the enemy's incoming attack and hit wide attack (square on PS3, X on 360) at the same time. If you have poor timing, you just block the attack. If you parry the attack just before it hits you, you follow up with a counterattack. MOVING TOWARDS AN ENEMY AND THEN HITTING ATTACK AFTERWARDS DOES NOT PARRY. IF YOU ARE MOVING THE STICK IN ANY WAY, LET THE STICK GO BACK TO NEUTRAL, THEN PRESS THE STICK AGAIN IN THE DIRECTION OF THE INCOMING ATTACK WHILE HITTING WIDE ATTACK AT THE SAME TIME.

DODGE MOVE - One of the first moves available for purchase in the game is the Offensive Defense move. Once purchased, you can press wide attack and jump at the same time to do a dodge. It is one of the cheapest abilities in the game, and you should buy it right away. Pressing the stick in a direction while dodging makes you dodge in that direction. If you are locked on to an enemy, dodging to the side allows you to strafe around them. You can dodge forward too, and it has some slight invincibility frames.

LOCK ON - By default, press R2 on the PS3, or the right bumper on the 360, to lock on to enemies. This helps out a lot when fighting single, large enemies.

BLADE MODE CAMERA - By default, the left stick rotates the blade mode camera. You can also walk around during Blade Mode by clicking in and holding the left stick.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengance is spinoff of the Metal Gear Solid series, and is developed by Platinum Games and Kojima Productions. It is a technical action game along the lines of Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was originally announced back in 2009 as Metal Gear Solid: Rising. It was going to be a hack n' slash/stealth game taking place in between MGS2 and MGS4. The plot would follow Raiden as he rescues Sunny, Olga's daughter, from the Patriots. In the process he would be captured by the Patriots and experimented on in Area 51 and turned into the cyborg ninja you see him as in MGS4. The game was being developed by Kojima's B-team in Kojima Productions, the people he really wants to hand Metal Gear off to so he can work on other games. However, they hosed it up and after years of work, still couldn't come up with a clear vision for the game. The project was essentially cancelled, until Kojima decided to collaborate with Platinum Games, makers of Bayonetta and Vanquish. It was then transformed into an action game and reannounced in 2011 as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Kojima Productions even made a short documentary explaining what went wrong with the original game and how they decided to collaborate with Platinum Games.

As well as getting a new name, Metal Gear Rising's setting has changed from being in between MGS2 and MGS4 to coming 4 years after the events of MGS4. Yes, this game is a canon installment to the series.

After the events of MGS4, nanomachines have fallen out of favor and PMCs have taken to turning their soldiers into cyborgs. Raiden, whose primary skill is murdering the hell out of people, now works for a private security company in order to put food on the table for his family. On a routine mission protecting the president of Abkhazia, a growing African nation, a mysterious rival PMC ambushes them. Raiden fails to protect the president and is severely injured in a fight with another cyborg. The PMC overthrows Abkhazia's government. Raiden is given an upgraded cyborg body and is sent back into Abkhazia to eliminate the rival PMC and restore the nation's rightful government.

The story will also cover Raiden's past as a child soldier and his "Jack the Ripper" persona. It looks ridiculous as all hell and Raiden talks like Batman sometimes. Characters from previous Metal Gear games may make an appearance. Solid Snake will make an appearance (in Japan, for now) as a DLC sword. The sword is imbued with his spirit and it also talks like Snake. I'm not joking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy2Zwga5yug

Metal Gear Rising's gameplay is done by Platinum Games, king of crazy action games. Rising handles similarly to Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden, but plays pretty differently from them. While Bayonetta had a dodge move and the ability to activate slow-motion with a well timed dodge, Raiden's main defensive maneuver is the parry. A mistimed parry will simply block an attack, but a well timed one will trigger a counter-attack that can sometimes dizzy enemies. Raiden does have a dodge move, but it is set to a button combination (wide attack + jump) rather than having its own dedicated button.

Of course, the game's key feature is Blade Mode. Blade Mode is a feature that allows you to precisely cut things in half by using an analog stick to change the angle of the cut. The face buttons can also be used for quick cutting where the angle doesn't matter. Blade mode's main use is for cutting up enemies. Cutting enemies in a precise spot will expose their cyborg spine, allow you to tear it out and restore some of your health and Blade Mode meter. It can also be used to break through defenses (chop protective armor off), stop enemy attacks and mobility (chop a guy's arm off so he can't attack you, or chop his legs off so he can't run after you), environmental kills (cut apart pillars so the ceiling above falls on top of guys, or topple a ferris wheel onto a bunch of guys), and for exploration (cutting through walls to find hidden items or rooms). Not everything in the game can be cut of course, but Raiden has an ability that highlights what can be cut in blue.

And for people who are way into combat systems, Metal Gear Rising appears to have quite a bit of hidden depth to it. Many attacks have fairly long recovery times, but quickly tapping Blade Mode allows you to cancel the recovery animation. Dodges can be used to cancel out of attacks, and the forward dodge has a short burst of invincibility frames that allows you to phase through enemy attacks and keep your combo momentum going. And this is just stuff that people have observed from the demo! Also, the game feels like 60 frames per second because it actually is. Wow!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnhYaDs4zvw

A demo is available on both PSN and Xbox Live. The demo is quite old though, as it's the same demo build shown off at last year's E3. People not familiar with this genre have cited a lot of frustrations playing it, as the demo really doesn't teach you anything. A lot of moves are unlocked in the demo, but there is no moves list and only a very brief tutorial. Keep this in mind when you try it. There are a lot of videos on youtube that list what moves can be done in the demo. I've also included a video of my playthrough of the demo up above, as well as an S rank video of the miniboss.

  • VR Missions - Adds a whole bunch of extra VR missions. Currently runs for $2.99.
  • Grey Fox skin & Fox Blade weapon - Was originally a pre-order bonus that can now be bought for $1.99.
  • Snake Sword - This is a talking wooden sword imbued with the soul of Solid Snake. This is Japan exclusive DLC, most likely because they couldn't be bothered to get Kiefer Sutherland to do the work for it.
  • Side-story DLC:

Sam's Story - Play as Jetstream Sam prior to the events of Revengeance. Sam has an entirely different moveset and a taunt button. It is currently free on both PS3 and 360, at least in NA.

Blade Wolf's Story - Play as Blade Wolf prior to the events of Revengeance. Not as good as Sam's DLC, but it does have a unique boss fight and one of the best songs of the game in it. Just like with Sam's DLC, it is currently free on both PS3 and 360, at least in NA.

Which console should I get this for?
The 360 and PS3 versions are nearly identical. The major difference between the two is that the PS3 version is stored on BluRay and therefore has pre-rendered cutscenes playing at a much higher quality.

How do I parry?!
Parry is assigned to a movement and works very similarly to the Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa accessory in Bayonetta. Parry is a contextual move, and not something you can bust out constantly. When an enemy is attacking you, tilt the left stick on the direction of the enemy and press the light attack button (square on PS3, X on 360) at the same time. Poor timing results in just a block, while good timing blocks and also parries their attack. Keep in mind that you cannot be moving towards and enemy and just press attack. You must let the stick go back to neutral, then press the stick in their direction. It has a bit of a learning curve, but feels great once you get used to it.

How do I dodge?!
Dodge is a maneuver that is performed by pressing light attack and jump at the same time. (Square + X on PS3, X + A on 360).
Doing this while standing still causes you to dodge backwards and slash your sword at the enemy. You can also press a direction to dodge and slash forward, or to the left or right. The forward dodge is different from the other dodges and has some invincibility frames. Perfect dodging will allow you to jump straight through attacks. The dodge ends with a sword slash like the other dodges. Unlike the other dodges, you can cancel out of it with blade mode. This means you can use it to dodge through an attack and cancel out of it without having to wait for the sword slash to finish. The other dodges cannot be cancelled out of and have a bit of a recovery time, so be careful.

I keep loving up my Blade Mode cuts!
Unless you need to do precise cuts, use the face buttons for quick cuts. Light attack does horizontal cuts, and strong attack does vertical cuts. For precise cuts, remember that you do not do a swiping motion with the right stick to cut. Spinning the stick around allows you to change the angle. Simply letting go of the stick performs a cut. This means you can do quick cuts by flick the stick in whatever direction you want. The left stick controls the camera and where the cut line is on the enemy. Remember that you can go into the options and switch which stick does what in Blade Mode.

How do I perform a specific move?
The demo has no movelist, but the full game does. For the demo you can just look up combo videos on Youtube that explain how to do them.

Is this game canon?!
Yes, it is.

Is there stealth?!
Yes, many areas have alternate paths to sneak around and stealth kill guards. The game also gives you stealth items to use such as the cardboard box and throwable holographic porn magazines.

That is an excellent title.

I am honestly considering skipping out of work early to pick this up on the 19th even though I have to go out that evening anyway. Just seeing that screenshot of Raiden on a missile in midair has made me pretty much stop caring about how meh I felt about DmC.

Only awesome games crash my game systems.

NMH 2 crashed when I killed 3 enemies and opened a chest simultaneously.

Fallout New Vegas crashed when I killed a Deathclaw with 10 C4s and 3 Fatmans

Revengeance crashed when I cut three mooks in their zandatsu zones in one swipe and then entered blade mode again during their explosions.

I'm ready

This looks like an early contender for game of the year right here. I can't wait to cut everything up while listening to some kind of heavy handed cyber samurai story.

edit: vvv I think you dreamed it. Like people are always only dreaming about PC ports of Japanese games, outside of a few specific publishers (Capcom, Koei, Falcom).

There was a PC version of MGS: Rising planned, but not Revengeance.

Also, this article lets you have a good look at the cutscene quality differences: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...g-demo-showdown

I normally don't pre-order games, but even basic looks at this and the fact that it was made by Platinum made me pre-order this one in a heartbeat.

If cutscene quality is the only thing that really suffers in the 360 version, I'm completely fine with that. I just want to go around chopping the poo poo out of things like some crazy anime meth addict.

Depending on how much tearing there is, that's easy enough to deal with too. For me, at least. I'll forgive an awful lot in the name of fun gameplay.

I found a statement on the US PS Blog about Unique Weapons:

"You can assign secondary unique weapons to the Strong Attack that will change the nature and style of Raidenís attacks, opening up all new combos and ways to cut your foes to pieces. "

So that's apparently how they work. I like it!

I love messing about with Zandatsu, but I wish the game gave you more points for a single, accurate slash than just slicing the enemy into hundreds of parts. It's still really fun to do, but if you want to maximise your ranking you pretty much need to do it for every enemy.

Four days away yesssss.

I wasn't sure the gamestop near my house would do a midnight release for this when I preordered last year since the general public seemed confused and angry about the concept and the people who considered themselves "real mgs fans" hated it, but it seems like the ignorant masses have been enlightened. Preview videos for this game used to have comments sections that were nothing but people bickering about how it was/wasn't killing the series and where's snake and blah blah blah. Now they're filled with people getting hyped which is awesome.

Plus that gamestop did a midnight release for Aliens: Colonial Marines so if they didn't do one for this game they'd probably be convicted of some sort of crime.

I assume that when people say that it doesn't match the music in the game it's because they needed to remix it because the in-game music is dynamic. Vocals only come in at pivotal climax moments of the boss fights, if they just used the music from the game without remixing it you'd have like three minutes of instrumental before the vocals come in.

EDIT: Also, totes pre-ordered that. Thanks for posting it.

Brutakas posted:

It is the music from the game - the game has three versions of each track (low-key, instrumental and vocal) and fades between them depending on the intensity of the scene. The stuff on the OST is just pre-assembled mixes of them, rather than the dynamic setup you have in the game.

Edit: Beaten!

Anyway, I feel confident enough in this to put down a preorder. People only just recently discovered the level of crazy dodge-cancelling stuff you can do in the demo, and that's only using just the basic weapon. The combat engine is just plain fun, slick and complex, and that's all I ask for in a fighting game. The fact that this is an official 'Metal Gear goes anime cyberpunk' game is just icing on the cake.

Finally, a bit about the soundtrack CD themselves. There are two different CD releases scheduled. The first is the Metal Gear Rising OST, part of the limited edition package, which features the instrumental tracks from the game. The second CD is called ďMetal Gear Rising: Revengeance Vocal Tracks,Ē which like its name implies, features all the vocal tracks from the game. The contents of both CDs have no overlap, so only by getting both soundtracks will you be able to complete a full collection of music from the game. Iím sorry if this is sounding like a sales pitch, but I wanted to make sure fans arenít misled by the multiple packages and make the right purchases. There are plenty of times that a lack of information has led me to purchase the wrong soundtrack myself.
