Apparently a meteor just hit Russia in a somewhat populated area. Early reports are that 400-500 are injured.

I guess it was hiding in the shadow of DA14 like Deep Impact after they split that asteroid in pieces.

From what I've read, it's entirely independent from DA14. Also, it did not explode on impact - it was very high in the air (it's a sonic boom, not an explosion). People were knocked off their feet by the boom, and a lot of glass broke (causing injury to those below, in some cases).

Anyhow, there's more info in the Comet megathread.

quote:

I’m trying to piece together what happened from the videos. First of all, I do not think this is related in any way to the asteroid 2102 DA14! For one thing, this occurred about 16 hours before DA14 passes. At 8 kilometers per second that’s nearly half a million kilometers away from DA14. That puts it on a totally different orbit.

For another, from the lighting, time of day, and videos showing the rising Sun, it looks like this was moving mostly east-to-west. I may be off, but that’s how it looks. DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, so any fragment of that rock would also appear to move south-to-north.

So again, I think this is unrelated to 2012 DA14. But wow, what a huge coincidence!

Looks like it burned up in the atmosphere and any injuries came from the shockwave and sonic boom it caused.

Wait, what. can we intercept meteors now, I thought that was science fiction. Or is Russia Today just being Russia Today again.

I caught that in one of the links too... it didn't look terribly reputable. There was another link floating around talking about UFOs.

No, it's just a very pretty light in the sky, followed by a sonic boom. Mind you, it's extremely large, extremely loud, and there's an amazing number of videos surfacing of it.

Yeah, it didn't hit, it burned up and the shockwaves from that blew out glass which hurt people. Not quite the SyFy special some journalists are reporting.

I'm so proud I haven't heard any terrible soviet russia jokes in the comment sections of any news sites or twitter.

Also the fact that the meteor caused that much damage when "intercepted" really makes me wonder what kind of damage it could have done if it actually hit.

Astronomer Phil Plait says his "tentative" opinion is that a meteor which has exploded over Russia is real, but that it is not related to the asteroid 2012 DA14 which is due to make a close fly-by of earth in the next few hours.

Yeah... Well, isn't that a funny little coincidence? The flyby is supposed to occur in about 10 hours, and I will hopefully be in some kind of bunker-like bar at that time.

Edit: "If 2012 DA14 were on a collision course, the shock of its rapid fall through Earth's atmosphere would cause it to explode, unleashing the power of a 2.4-megaton atomic bomb. In the worst-case scenario, that'd be enough energy to destroy an entire city."

Bunker bars, the safest place to be. It is pretty crazy that this would happen ten or so hours before the Asteroid.

More likely smaller, size of a basketball. The 1972 Fireball was larger, and that got taped as well. Wiki has a few calculations about what would happen if a car size meteor would strike. The explossion heard from this one is just the sound barrier being burst, still scary as loving hell.
