The real question here is why do so many Russians in a middle-of-nowhere city have so many cameras in their cars?

Because of rampant insurance fraud. I think there was even a thread for it on the forums somewhere.

Yup Russia has a impressive level of insurance fraud such as Mafia paying people to jump into the street and then demand a payout from the driver.

The claims process is also more challenging and miserable too.

So the Russian solution was to install dash cams on a majority of the cars.

Amazing that this fire started 42 years ago. Unless its smothered it will probably continue to burn for a thousand years.

Awesome, where is the one in AU? Might need to make a visit.

Edit: Wilcannia/Woytchugga is the only one I can find, and a theory is that it may have been lit quite recently (less than 6000 years ago, that is)

So what would have happened if a meteor this size flew directly into the Earth and hadn't broken up in the atmosphere?

Even relatively small ones pack quite the wallop.

I remember reading a story about a relatively small one which crashed in the Indian Ocean but the impact had the same energy as a 10k tactical nuke.

This is a pretty interesting tool:

The Tunguska strike was believed to be an object about 100m in size and that packed a punch of about 15 megatons of TNT (roughly 1,000 times more powerful Hiroshima).

The 2012 DA14 one that is passing very close later today is just 50 meters across, but would still wipe out a city if it should actually collide (which thankfully it won't).

Polish news mentioned that a wall collapsed in one of the factories because of the shockwave. This could be it.

Also, there's over 900 people injured due to glass shards etc.

The moon happens. Craters overlying craters all over the place. But the question is a bit theoretical, all meteors of this size, and even quite a bit larger will be broken up by the atmosphere.

There is no impact site. It wasnt that large as far as people are saying.

The damage is from the shock wave of the sonic boom.

So I guess if there ever was an impact of even a small size, you would have concussive liquidated organ deaths for kilometers

I was showing my boyfriend the videos linked in this thread earlier, and he delightedly said that the video in which the meteor looks like it's coming toward the driver was probably what certain dinosaurs saw in their final moments and I thought that was pretty bad-rear end.

Since he's a nuclear engineer, he also pointed out that the meteor looks kind of like a MIRV and that any Russian engineers who witnessed it(and others who know what those things look like) might have poo poo themselves this morning.

That is endlessly fascinating. Your bf pointing out the perspective of a doomed dinosaur is a fantastic realization to have and I want to thank you guys for pointing it out. This whole event is awesome (except for the injuries which hopefully will stay low, I do worry about all those peoples' poor ears). Then there is a simultaneous event which is the meteor being discussed and shared via the internet, which is awesome as well. This story has everything: real facts, biblical level Apocalypse events, cool rear end science, cool rear end space science, unconfirmed speculation about missile intercepts, mis-directs that lead you to other info, funny pictures and memes, talk about the Cold War.

I want to live in this thread.

Yeah I'm a nuclear person too and if I had seen that in person I think I would have been getting ready to be blown up. Though once it became apparent it wasn't a nuclear missile I'd probably think it was the coolest thing ever.

Watching the videos gave me a deja-vu of the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. The fireball in the sky, the sonic boom, shattered glass everywhere, the gaping hole in the factory, yikes. I really didn't expect the memories to start coming back so suddenly. Best of luck to the poor people on the receiving end of the meteor impact.
