gently caress yes, an Ys thread. Like Toddy said, I'd kind of wanted one of these to go up when Origin came out, but I was up to my eyeballs in bullshit around that time and couldn't make do. Very happy to see this go up in time for Chronicles+. Good OP, Streetman.

Also just for the record, y'all should probably be falling to your knees and worshipping the ground Saraleen stands on, 'cause she's largely the reason Chronicles+ is so goddamn amazing. I'm actually curious as to whether or not the Japanese fans are gonna get pissed that there's no apparent plans for Chron+ to come out over in the "domestic" market, since it's pretty much the superior version of the game!

Back then I pronounced it as "whys" in my head, I have to imagine that's wrong. :)

In-universe, "Ys" is the name of the flying kingdom you visit in the second game (AKA, the second half of Chronicles+). It takes the name from the myth of Ys, which among other things is where the city of Paris (Par-Ys :v: ) takes its name from. It's pronounced like "ease".

No native PC version exists and the game, as is, would look like rear end on a PC. The graphics were designed from the ground up for the PSP. So no, barring a PC or PS3 version with redesigned graphics, don't expect to see Seven on Steam.

On the flip side, though, because the bosses in particular are way more visually complex than other Ark Engine games and you can't really turn that down without making everything an indistinct mess, Origin is likely to remain a Steam exclusive! At best they'd have to make a Vita version, not a PSP one.

http://xseedgames.com/forums/showthread.php?3987-Drake-s-Tinfoil-Hat-Corner-Speculating-on-what-ll-be-in-upcoming-content!

Super TLDR so you don't have to read through my walls of :goonsay:: Falcom's been subtly but pretty consistently pushing the idea of "knight Elena" for a while now, and I suspect she's going to feature in an upcoming title as a major/playable character. The pushing of the idea seems just a little too persistent to just be "fanservice", and the general tone of it all doesn't seem right for fanservice either.

Meanwhile, it sounds like XSEED is doing recording for Celceta right now, according to their Twitter. I imagine we'll hear details about the release of it fairly soon at this point, since once voice assets are recorded, usually the only thing left is script insertion and debugging.

I could see Ys 7 being more likely (assuming nothing's wrong with the PC version. I think it only got released in China?)

As far as I understand it, the issue with Napishtim is that Konami owns the script they have for the game, so a new one would need to be commissioned. Deuce, the man-god super-fan translator who handled Oath, parts of Origin and I&II, apparently has had a Napishtim script sitting in his back pocket for some time. The thing is, it would also need to be completely style-edited, re-inserted and debugged, which would be no small amount of work when XSEED already has a ton of announced projects to get out the door (and apparently Rune Factory 4 has been a huge, Trails FC-esque resource sponge - the script is about the same size, for one). So since it's still basically as much work as releasing any other game, XSEED needs to find time on the docket to actually work on the game. And there's the issue of the game having been released already - which could bite into sales compared to unreleased titles.

I bet it'll come, they just need to find time.

As for moving on, Oath is your best bet for "next title", though Origin will give you more Feena & Reah. It'll even show you who Toal was and what his relationship to the goddesses was! Celceta, due out later this year, happens more immediately after II.

CF, too, has a XP testing/development machine we've used for years for backwards compatibility testing. In fact, I'm posting from it right this second. :v:

I should point out, though: at least as far as CF is concerned, SC is likely to be our last certified-XP-compatible game because XP is being EOL'd in April of next year. I would really recommend putting some scratch together for an OS upgrade next year, because any games we accept after that date will not be tested with XP due to it being a deprecated OS.

A number of our games picked up after April 2014 will probably still WORK in XP, mind :v: but aside from SC we won't be doing compatibility testing after that date.

Last I checked, at least, oh my yes. I remember reading a lot of sourness about that when it first came out.

It'll be curious to see if Falcom addresses that at all, especially with the English Steam versions pulling in so much money.

However:

It must be kinda weird if you're a Japanese company trapped in the selling-to-otaku culture of "we will likely only sell 2000 of these therefore we shall price it at X in order to make a profit" to then move to a platform like Steam and then suddenly find out there are so many more people you can sell your poo poo to and you could've been making more money years ago.

Honestly? Some of them stay in denial. That it's a blip or that sales will fall off or that it somehow cheapens the brand. There are developers so used to thinking that their sales can only go down unless they get that Pokemon-esque miracle that a lot of them don't realize their products could have fairly extensive appeal if they just priced it in a way that most people could access them, and put their products on accessible platforms. And PC has been a "porn platform" for so long that it's really hard to dissociate it from that in the zeitgeist.

I'm actually wondering, personally, if FFXIV might not be making some headway on that front; when I was in Japan last year, it was getting promoted and sold, for PC, in major shops and not just holes in the wall in Akiba. The PC version usually had to be put with the small selection of western PC games, but even so. Killer apps opening a platform remains A Thing, and given its apparent ridiculous success, I've been wondering for a while now if XIV might have a bit of a knock-on effect for the PC market, as new XIV players go looking for other things to play on their PCs now that they realize the PC can be used for that.

So how do the other Legend of Heroes games stack up? I had been under the impression that most of them were never translated, but it looks like 1 and 3-5 are available in a variety of formats.

LoH 1 is a product of the early nineties. This gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkNyBx-4zUo

The infamous line "Mankind has always been the poisonnnnnn" comes from the same dub, and I am sad I could not find a context to make it work in SC. I tried not to fiddle with the script TOO much, but god drat, that line is just too ridiculous to not try to get in there. Sadly, no dice, at least this time around.

The game itself is a fairly dull, unremarkable Dragon Quest clone. It's sufficiently uninspired that it's hard to even insult it. The selling points were the voicework and art for the TG16 version.

LoH 3-5 have translations that range from the nonsensical (Vermillion is terrible, and includes lines like "I didn't have eaten a unusual today") to the aggressively mediocre (Song of the Ocean is legible, but still lacks any of the charm of the Japanese). The bigger problem is that the really cool full-real-time battle system of the earlier versions of Gagharv was torn out for a simplified version of Trails combat, without map movement. It's very dull and has none of the fun or charm of the original releases, which is a bummer because LoH 3 was an enormous reversal from the first two games and probably made sure Falcom's reputation as a game developer was intact after the loving disaster that was Ys V; LoH 3 is still considered a fairly significant 16-bit-era classic in Japan, so far as I'm aware, and IV is fairly highly regarded as well.

In short, the English versions should probably be avoided, aside from LoH1 as a historical curiosity (being the last Falcom game obviously branded as a Falcom game prior to Ark thirteen years later; Popful Mail practically doesn't count because Falcom's involvement was almost entirely removed). I kind of hope the PC versions might get some kind of translation some day, but that's not too likely anymore.

That's basically the idea, yes. SC intentionally caps off Estelle and Joshua's basic story - it's still left a little open-ended, because this is a big world of a thousand stories that's bigger than just the two of them and even they aren't done with their lives yet, but it ends in a very satisfying way and would be a good place for people to "move on" if it comes to that. Third takes all those little hooks and blows them up by a factor of ten, so if anything you don't want to stop there. It pretty much expands on a bunch of the side stuff and elaborates on the set-up for the Crossbell (Zero/Ao) and Erebonia (Sen/Sen2) arcs/campaigns. Doing Third and then not doing those would be a real kick in the pants.

The game itself is sort of a dungeon crawler - there are no towns, and the whole thing takes place in this weird illusory dimension that may or may not be real, but all the side events the player gets to see are real and are events that have or are happening. And it stars a character who will get introduced in, and have a major role in, SC, along with a new character as his partner. It's a difficult game to sum up in a concise forum post.

Nate RFB posted:

It's not that bad, just kind of a dull and easy Quintet game. Every single boss to my recollection can be killed by simply suicide charging into it while mashing the attack button. You just tend to kill them before you run out of HP. Also the magic system was a complete waste of time.

Also this is a pretty good summation of Ys V. You can't quite call it an Objectively Bad Game™, because it doesn't really have much in the way of systemtic defects. It's just really uninspired, both graphically (which strikes everyone as particularly weird since it's meant to be set in Egypt) and design-wise, and it falls far short of the bar set by previous titles, especially Dawn of Ys. That's another factor, though; Ys V was inexplicably only for the SNES. If you were part of the PC-98 or TG16 crowd, I.E. Falcom's primary fanbase up to that moment? :vd:

Ys V did clearly inspire the mechanical shift to come in Ark and Oath and beyond. But at the time, it wasn't very impressive.

The issue is that Zero and Ao are kinda in a bad place platform wise.

This is basically the problem with the Crossbell campaign in particular. The Erebonian campaign isn't in nearly as much trouble since it's on the PS3 and the engine being used also allows for PC porting; while this wouldn't be effortless, it still puts the chance of Sen/Sen2 on the PC well inside the realm of possibility, especially given the likely potential return on investment those games would have. Crossbell isn't in quite the same situation. The PSP versions simply aren't coming out here; there's no way they'd be approved after the end of 2014. The Vita versions would be possible, but it's likely the voicework would have to be cut down to fit within budget. (That being said, though, the Vita has apparently generally been good to XSEED, so it probably wouldn't be a total wash; ditto Vita versions of the Erebonian games.) A PC version of Zero does exist, as does one of Ao; the Ao one is in Chinese, currently, but it shouldn't be enormously difficult from a technical perspective to put a J-E script into either game. The bigger problems are that the ports themselves are based around the PSP versions, and thus look rough; unlike the Liberl games, the Crossbell games were designed from the ground up for the PSP, and that largely includes the assets. A few somewhat higher-rez assets exist for the Vita version, but even those aren't truly "HD" enough for a proper PC version - certainly nothing like the PS3 assets in the current Eng-PC version of Trails in the Sky. There's also the fact that the Chinese versions are shot through with incredibly invasive DRM (though I'm not sure how bad it is for the J-PC version of Zero), and it's unclear how hard that will be to decouple from the port.

It's not totally impossible that the English-speaking world could see the Crossbell campaign, but there are a lot of technical hurdles to making it realistically happen.

Finally picked up Origin for 6 bucks. They really need to release VI on Steam.

I've mentioned this before, but the problem with Napishtim is that, since the extant script is owned by Konami, they'd need to re-translate and re-insert the script, plus bring the game up to spec; basically it'd be as much work as any other game. So it's really a matter of finding time in the schedule.

If I'm only getting one Ys from the Steam sale, should I go for Origin or Chronicles? I've only ever played Celceta, which was great if a bit on the easy side.

Oath in Felghana is also on sale despite not being on the page, oddly.

Also: they needed the time, guess they found the time :v:

Which reminds me: did they keep the LoH entry numbering after trails (Trails being LoHVI)? Or is Zero/Ao considered a spinoff (and then the same goes I suppose for Sen)?

When Zero was first announced, it was numbered as LoH VII. As I like to point out to Wyrdwad, though, that was dropped by the time it actually went to market. Ao never had a number attached, and neither has either Sen game. It's pretty clear Trails is its own thing now, although from a very technical perspective, yes, Crossbell is VII and Erebonia is VIII.

An open question to people who know more about LoH than me:

i know all the kiseki games are all interconnected and have an overarching plot and stuff, but does anyone know when falcom decided to do that

like was it always planned that way from the start, or was FC just a bigger hit than expected and they saw dollar signs?

So far as I am aware, Trails in the Sky was intended originally as a single game. You can actually see a lot of remnants of this in the data files, too, but that's about all the detail I can go into on that subject :v:. They split it in two, though, simply because their vision of the game was getting too big for Falcom's budgets at the time.

It was always intended to be a new world setting separate from the Gagharv one of LoH III-V, and it was intended to be significantly more internally consistent and "open to expansion" than Gagharv was (they basically tore through the entirety of Gagharv's potential in three games) and with a somewhat higher technological base than the purely-medieval-fantasy previous LoH games were. As far as I know, though, it was also intended to be very potential "one and done" - I.E., if the game, setting etc. didn't catch on, they could just leave it there and move on. It had the potential for enormous expansion, because they were boiling down the area covered in the "game world" significantly (and conversely expanding the scope of potential sequels) but being a separate setting, it could be left behind if it didn't work out.

It wasn't actually a huge success with FC's release (then just "Sora no Kiseki"), actually - it did okay and the ending became infamous very quickly, of course, but being a PC-only title in 2004 did not do it any favors. That was the lowest ebb of the PC in Japan, and by that point Trails was literally sharing shelf space with porn in many places. And I don't mean sharing "store space", I mean it was on the same shelf. It wasn't until the PSP versions came out that it began selling better, and even then it was a long burn. Trails doing 100k+ in an opening week is a phenomenon that began with Zero.

So, as far as I know, Trails was designed to be expandable, but they also designed the initial game (or SC, at least) to be an ending if it fizzled completely. It didn't, and eventually really caught on, so now it's the huge continuous narrative everyone's come to know and love (and dread if you're a localizer trying to tame this beast). There might be a few errors in there but I'm pretty sure it's all truth.

You misread. There was originally supposed to be a single Trails in the Sky game that ended up split into two (FC and SC) due to budget and time constraints.

Yeah, there was originally never going to be an FC and SC. What is currently FC+SC was going to be one game, but it was just too big.

Cake Attack posted:

i like how if you swap PSP and PC this describes the situation in NA pretty well too. i mean maybe not the sharing shelf space with porn, but on the other hand steam did greenlight nekopara...

I personally always suspected that would be the case; even in 2010, before XSEED's announcement and when I was pondering tackling Kiseki on my own, I thought it would do well on the PC here due to lack of competition on the platform and a general hunger for that kind of content. Meanwhile the PSP was dead in the water.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd be actually willing to release a new Ys game on PC first. I'm not holding my breath, but from a business standpoint I'm sure it is making more and more sense to them to go ahead with this idea.

This is straight-up speculation and not based on any kind of insider info at all, but based on the rather specific way Kondo phrased that one answer to that Windows Central question, I strongly suspect a full-blown sequel to Ys Origin, or another title starring Yunica and Hugo at any rate, is at least being heavily mooted, if not in pre-production/early production. They themselves have admitted that the game sold north of 200,000 copies, data suggests that number is even higher now, it's the best-selling of the Steam Ys titles, and it sits among the upper echelons of Japanese games on Steam in terms of sales in general. The theoretical math suggests that even with sale prices and whatnot, Origin has provided Falcom with upwards of seven figures in revenue. That's spread out over a period of a couple years, but even so, that's huge. That's a fanbase. That's a base you could sell a new game to, and I'm sure they're aware of that.

Will it actually happen, I have no idea. But especially given how Yunica and Hugo have been showing up in side media all of a sudden after getting ignored for half a decade or more, I do wonder.

About as likely as a Ys game centering around Elena, perhaps? :v:

I dunno about an Elena-centric game but they've been teasing goddamn something with her for ages now. They do this poo poo with Trails all the time, leave obscure hints in secondary material for people to pick up on later.

But seriously, it wouldn't surprise me at all if another Ys Origin offering hasn't at least been discussed internally. Origin's numbers are the sort of thing where you begin to talk seriously about follow-ups for a foreign market exclusively.

Tamba posted:

Unlikely. While Falcom seems to like the PC game sales in the west, they still don't want any of that stuff in Japan (I'm following the Falcom Twitter, and whenever they mention a Steam sale, they get angry japanese tweets complaining that they aren't selling the japanese versions on steam).

edit: https://twitter.com/nihonfalcom/status/554492366644457472
They claim it's because the japanese version would only sell like 2k units on steam, so they don't even bother.

Sadly this is one of those things where they kind of aren't getting the hint that just maybe they'd see more than 2k if they participated in Steam Sales in Japan

The long march continues

This one was heavily discussed when that ys girls calendar thing was printed for Ys Seven. I reckon having a war-trained Elena tearing Felghana apart with the Genos sword would be an awesome game.

Nate is more getting a dig in at my :tinfoil:-ing a while back over Elena getting put into future games as a playable character, I think. :v:

(Still maintain there has to be some kind of calculation behind that subtle-but-persistent push of the idea of Elena in a Felghanan knight uniform with the Brave Sword. Like since 2010 almost every single appearance she's made in "new" media has been in that outfit except for like one wallpaper and the loving Line sticker sets, and those are mostly older assets repurposed as big emotes.)
