IMPORTANT STUFF: Psych airs at 10pm/9 central on Wednesday nights! (There are you happy Zaggitz?) Psych's new book, "Psych's Unofficial Guide to Crimefighting", will be out on May 7th! The new interactive episode/game, Social Sector just started Feb. 15th!![]() How long has it been since we've had new Psych? By the time season 7 premeires, it will have been 322 days since new Psych. Whaaaaat? Psych finally returns Wednesday, February 27th on the USA network. Characters welcome, but sometimes you just have to wait for-freaking-ever. For those of you just joining us, what took you so long? This is the 7th season! But really, feel free to jump right in, there's VERY little story arc in Psych except for a few character relationship things which you will be all caught up with by reading this OP, and three season finales that were connected, and that arc is now over, also. Psych is all about Shawn Spencer, trained by his father, Henry, to be hyper-observant from a young age. Shawn and his best friend and business partner, Burton Guster, better known as Gus, run Psych, a psychic detective agency. Shawn and Gus often work with the Santa Barbara Police Department, specifically with Carlton Lassiter, aka Lassie, and Juliet O'Hara, aka Jules, under the supervision of Chief Karen Vick. ![]() Shawn: Here's the thing, Robert: I am a psychic. Gus: We work for the Santa Barbara Police Department. We've solved over forty-seven cases. I'm also a pharmaceutical rep, if that means anything to you. Shawn: You've seen The Mentalist, right? Robert: Yes. Shawn: It's like that. Gus: Except that guy's a fake. Shawn: Right. If I were a fake psychic, it would be eerily similar. Gus: Exactly the same. Shawn: A virtual carbon copy. Also, it's one of the funniest and most feel good shows on TV, (almost always). AND, it has one of the best theme songs ever. ![]() Shawn: What are you saying? That he has a hunch based on unverifiable information? Gus: That's what you use to solve every case! Shawn: Okay, that stinks. It's true, though. James Roday is Shawn Spencer. Shawn was raised by his police detective father, Henry, to be hyper-observant, and he developed a real gift of using observation and logic to solve crimes. But he never wanted to be a cop, so he instead decided to be a slacker, and he'd sometimes make money by calling in tips to cops based off observations he made. When the police became suspicious of him, he told them that he was psychic in order to not get arrested. Chief Vick told him that he'd go to jail if she found out he was lying about being psychic, so Shawn doesn't have much of a choice but to keep the charade up. Realizing that he could turn this into a career, and use his gift to solve crimes without being held by the restraints of being an actual policeman, Shawn and his best friend Gus founded Psych, a psychic detective agency. Shawn: I'm just one guy. And I've solved more crimes than I can count. Because I've solved a lot of crimes. Not just because I can't count very high. Henry: Shawn does have a way of... sensing the truth. Gus: And he's the only one of us who could actually pass for someone in need of institutionalization. Shawn: I'll take that as a compliment. Gus: I wouldn't. ![]() Gus: I can't spend the night in the museum. I don't have my toothbrush, I don't have my multi-vitamins, and oh yeah, I don't want my soul suffering eternal damnation for disrupting the sleep of an Egyptian canal digger. Dule Hill is Burton "Gus" Guster, aka Bighead Burton, Chocolate Columbo, Magic Head, Gus T.T. Showbiz (The extra T is for extra talent), Ovaltine Jenkins, Bruton Gaster, Nick Nack, Lavender Gooms, Lemongrass Gogulope, Gus "Silly-Pants" Jackson, Methuselah Honeysuckle, Tan, Ernesto Agapito Garces Conde de Abelar, Art Vandelay, Sterling Cooper, Burton "Oil Can" Guster, Hollabackatcha, Jazz Hands, Shawn, Ghee Buttersnaps a.k.a. "The Heater", Guts, Ol' Ironside, John Jacob Jingley-Schmidt, Gurton Buster, Chocolate Einstein, MC ClapYoHandz, Control Alt Delete, The Jackal, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Original G-String a.k.a. Crowd Pleasah, And a few other names, too. Lassie: I'm Detective Carlton Lassiter, this is my associate, Burton Guster. [looking at Gus] What's wrong? Gus: I'm not used to getting introduced by my real name. Shawn and Gus have been best friends since they were kids, and Gus has always been the smarter, more uptight half of the pair. Unlike Shawn, Gus studied hard, went to college and now has a day job as a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep, which comes in handy a lot when they're solving murders. He also has a huge range of knowledge, a lot of strange hobbies and the Super Sniffer, his nose, which is very sensitive so he's good at finding and identifying odors. Shawn and Gus are partners, Gus isn't a sidekick he brings a lot to the team and Shawn can't function nearly as well without him. Gus started out kind of uptight and the straight man, but over the years he's relaxed until, most of the time, he's just as goofy as Shawn. He also loves food, the unhealthier, the better. Shawn: Man, I told you eating something called "stick of butter in a bun" was a bad idea. Gus: I can't help it, Shawn. My body craves buttery goodness. Although the show is all about solving murders and other crimes, the strength of the show comes from Shawn and Gus' friendship and how they play off each other, and the rest of the cast. Gus: I would not let you touch my urine. Shawn: Oh, you're not the friend I thought you were. Gus still does have his sales job, but since season 3 it doesn't come up much. Lately, Gus has been working on finding himself a girl and settling down. It hasn't gone so well. But rumor has it, things will be looking up for Gus soon. Shawn: You don't have enough game for half of one of those women. Gus: Please. I've got game. Shawn: Gus, don't be the only black lead on a major cable network. ![]() Lassiter: Guster, you have to wake up to the real world: people have sex and kill each other. That's the real world. Not some magical "feelings" place. Timothy Omundson is Head Detective Carlton Lassiter, aka Lassie, a nickname Shawn gave him and he kind of hates. Lassie is the hard-nosed by the book cop who hates all of Shawn and Gus' antics. Really, Lassie is very good at his job, but when he and Juliet are paired with Shawn and Gus all working a case together, that team is pretty much unstoppable. Sometimes Lassie is a thorn in Shawn and Gus' side, and Shawn and Gus are always a pain in his side. He'd never admit it, but he does admire Shawn and Gus' abilities and what they bring to the team. Bartender: What's your poison? Lassiter: Humanity. Bartender: Bad day in the universe, huh? Lassiter: Eh. They all sort of run together. Lassiter: Yep. {he throws back his drink} Well you already know my name. I come here to unwind because my job can be... intense. I often pretend I'm Clint Eastwood. Marlowe: Even in Blood Work? Lassiter: Mostly Heartbreak Ridge. Marlowe: Please continue. Lassiter: I'm somewhat recently divorced, I believe there's little to no room for interpretation when it comes to the United States Constitution, and I have an unusually high threshold for pain. Lassie loves guns, firing guns, catching bad guys, queso, authority figures and being a cop. He also has a bit of a soft side (not romantically, more in an awkward big brother sort of way) and respect for for his partner, Junior Detective Juliet O'Hara. He'd never admit how much he cares about her unless she's in mortal danger. He mentors Juliet in being a cop, and she tries to mentor him in being a normal human being, with mixed success. He also really hates squirrels. Shawn: Of course we'll help you. You're like our brother. Gus: [winces] eh. Shawn: Stepbrother? Gus: [winces] eh. Shawn: Weird kid who lives down the street and eats nothing but mayonnaise on Saltines? Shawn Spencer: Good morning detectives, collecting money for the Policeman's ball? Carlton Lassiter: We don't have balls. Shawn Spencer: I honestly have no response to that. Teasing Lassie is pretty much Shawn and Gus' favorite thing to do, but really, they like him. ![]() Last year, Lassie met, and fell in love with Marlowe Viccellio, played by Kristy Swanson. Unfortunately, Lassie had to send Marlowe to jail just after they started dating, but decided to wait for her. Marlowe will be in two or three episodes this season. Lassiter: Marlowe, I would move heaven and earth to be with you. Just as long as that movement is in accordance with the state laws of California. ![]() Maggie Lawson plays Junior Detective Juliet O'Hara, aka Jules. Juliet became Lassie's partner in the first episode after the pilot, and Lassie took her under his wing. She has a drive to prove herself, but is often caught between finding Shawn and Gus' antics amusing and trying to be a serious police detective. She's strong, smart, and a good cop. Shawn: Jules. Juliet: Sorry, Shawn, no time for your tomfoolery and silliness. Shawn: Actually we were just... Juliet: That also goes for nonsense, malarkey, and shenanigans. Pretty much since the day she and Shawn met, they've had a flirtation going on, which they both were afraid to act on. They finally got together in the fifth season. Lassiter: My point is: if you don't treat O'Hara with the respect she deserves or if you hurt her in any way I will discharge my pistol. Shawn: You're saying you'll shoot me. Lassiter: Repeatedly. Last season, Shawn almost proposed to Juliet, but didn't. He did, however, ask to move in together at the very end of the season. She also reconnected with her father, played by William Shatner. Shawn: Baby, all your facial parts are in the right spots. Juliet: Thanks, Shawn. James Roday and Maggie Lawson are together in real life, they've been dating since they met in the first season. ![]() Chief Vick: I don't mean to sound like a hard rear end... Juliet: You didn't! Chief Vick: I did. Juliet: I didn't get that at all. Chief Vick: Actually I was trying to sound like a hard rear end. Juliet: Mission accomplished! Kirsten Nelson is Chief Karen Vick. When a case is eluding Lassiter and Juliet, Chief Vick hires Shawn and Gus to come in and consult. She's a bit of a hardass and doesn't let anyone walk all over her, but is never undreasonable. She puts up with Shawn and Gus's shenanigans because they get the job done, but puts her foot down when they get to be too much. She also has a bit of a soft side for Shawn, since in the first season she was interim chief, and Shawn found the scandal material against the man trying to get her removed from her position, thus securing her spot as Chief permanently. Chief Vick: Henry Spencer, where are your pants!? Henry: I'm not entirely sure, Chief. ![]() Henry Spencer: [watching Shawn jump up and down because he just figured out the case] Shawn, don't you *dare* learn a wrong lesson while I'm trying to teach you a right lesson! Corbin Bernsen is Henry Spencer, Shawn's father. Henry is one of the best cops the SBPD ever had, but for the first four seasons was retired. He and Shawn originally had a very strained relationship (Henry didn't even tell Shawn when he moved back to Santa Barbara) because of Shawn's antics and refusal to grow up for a long time. When Shawn and Gus founded Psych, Henry was skeptical that it would stick. Slowly, as Shawn showed his commitment to Psych and ability to do the job, Henry and Shawn's relationship has grown. There's still tension and arguments occasionally, but they're getting somewhere close to having a really good father-son relationship. Shawn and Gus often use him as a sounding board when they're stuck on a case, and sometimes stash witnesses or other people who might be in danger at his house. Lassiter: You're not going anywhere because you're not on this case. Shawn: Understood. DAAAAAD! Henry: They're on this case. Lassiter: Henry! Near the end of Season 4, Chief Vick offered Henry a part-time job as the coordinator of all the consultants the SBPD uses, which would make him Shawn and Gus' boss when they worked for the department. After initially refusing, he reluctantly accepted when he realized it would mean he could go with Shawn out in the field in an official capacity, to keep him safe and help out when needed (though he only goes in dire circumstances.) Chief Vick: Wait. You're retiring? Shawn: Effective immediately. My resignation letter's already on your desk. Vick: Woah woah woah. Is this because I yelled at you for the pants thing? At the end of season 6, Henry re-retired from the force. He also reconciled with Shawn. And then he went to see an old friend, who shot him. Is Henry alive or dead? We've been wondering that for almost 322 days! ![]() RECURRING CHARACTERS ![]() Young Shawn and Gus - At the beginning of roughly half of the episodes, we'll see young Shawn (played by Seasons 1-5: Liam James; Seasons 5-present: Skyler Gisondo), and occasionally young Gus (played by Carlos McCullers II). Most of the time we see them with a younger version of Henry, still played by Corbin Bernsen. Usually young Shawn and Gus will learn a lesson or have something happen to them that will later relate to the episode to grown-up (relatively ) Shawn and Gus.Henry: [about an army commercial] Look at all the stuff they're getting done while you're lying there slacking off. What does that make you want to do? Young Shawn: Go into advertising. That's a really catchy jingle. Seriously, I can't get it out of my head. ![]() Buzz McNabb, played by Sage Brocklebank, is a beat cop. Young, naive and exceedingly kind, Buzz is sometimes tricked or nudged into giving Shawn and Gus help that Lassiter and Juliet won't. Shawn: Really, Buzz? This is the thanks I get for giving you a cat and finding a guy to remove your Baha Men tattoo? ![]() Woody the Coroner, played by Kurt Fuller, since the 4th season. Woody's a nice guy, but creepy. Shawn: Woody, I need Despereaux's remains. Woody: Can't sell them to you, Shawn. I'm kind of on probation for that sort of thing. Shawn: I don't want to own them. Woody: Good, because as a hobby it is very expensive. Really creepy. ![]() Madeleine Spencer, played by Cybill Shepherd, is Shawn's mom and Henry's ex-wife. Henry and Maddy are on good terms and clearly still care for each other, but now live separate lives. She calls Shawn "Goose" for unknown reasons. Maddy is a police psychiatrist and travels extensively for her job. ----- Hey what's the deal with this Yin/Yang Trilogy thing? The final episodes of the third, fourth and fifth seasons all dealt with the Yin/Yang Killer. This is the only real long-term story arc the show has dealt with, and the show is well worth watching just for those three episodes. The arc didn't have much impact to the rest of the seasons except for a few mentions and another very minor arc for Juliet at the beginning of season 5. The second episode, which was a tribute to Hitchcock, was particularly awesome. Is this show on Netflix? Yes, yes it is. The first Six seasons are all on Netflix! If you don't have Netflix but have OnDemand, James and Dule's 10 favorite episodes (with special introductions by them) are available OnDemand. Suggest me an episode to convince me to watch! Season 1: "From the Earth to Starbucks (Episode 10) or "Scary Sherry: Bianca's Toast" (15th and final episode of S1) Season 2: "American Duos" (Episode 1) "Lights, Camera... Homicidio" (Episode 13) Season 3: "Gus Walks Into a Bank" (Episode 8) or "Lassie Did a Bad, Bad Thing" (Episode 11) Season 4: "High Top Fade-Out" (Episode 7) or "The Head, the Tail, the Whole drat Episode" (Episode 15) Season 5: "Viagra Falls" (ep 6) or "We'd like to Thank the Academy" (ep 13) Season 6: "Last Night Gus" (ep 2), or "Heeeere's Lassie!" (ep 11) What else should I know about this show? 1) It loves pop-culture references. Especially 80's and very early 90's pop culture references. 2) They have a lot of guest stars. 3) Most episodes have some kind of a "theme" that the episode is centered around. What's this stuff during the credits? Psych-Outs run with the credits. Sometimes they're mini-blooper reels, sometimes it's the cast singing or goofing off in some way. What is the deal with the pineapples? There is a pineapple hidden (or sometimes not so hidden) in every episode, from the pilot onwards. They often have contests and stuff based around spot the pineapple. Why? Because they're delicious. Are you a fan of delicious flavor? *new* Zap2it has a gallery of almost every pineapple in every Psych episode! What's the deal with this Social Sector thing? The Social Sector is sort of an online interactive episode story... thing that will be running for the next few weeks. Before last season, they did a similar game called the "Hashtag Killer" that was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media-Original Interactive Television Programming - 2012. Dish me up some spoilers for the season!: Pulling this straight off Wikipedia, because it's a pretty big info dump here. Contains spoilers for guest stars, their characters and the plots of some of the episodes. - Parminder Nagra will appear as Rachael, a beautiful and charming woman Gus falls for; she may also have a secret. - There WILL be a musical episode this season, and it will be a two-hour event. - The season will also contain episodes inspired by Clue and The Blair Witch Project. - the Clue-based episode will air as the series' 100th. - Jeffrey Tambor is set to appear in one episode as Juliet's step-father. - Anthony Michael Hall will appear as Harris Trout, a consultant hired by the mayor to increase efficiency at the SBPD. - I've also heard Curt Smith will be making another appearance! On the docket, thinking we'll do it late this week or early next? We technically have like 5 weeks or something until the Clue episode, so worst case we'll do it in a week or two. I haven't found it yet in a convenient way to watch so everyone can join in yet.

I went to bed early last night (and was woken up confused twice by Gus and Shawn) so I didn't do the Slumber Party, but I DVRed it just for the hell of it. Is was there some original stuff that is worth going and looking for or was it just a bunch of episodes that I'll see anyway if I find the time to do a rewatch?

There were small bits during some commercial breaks. Usually they were like 30 second things of Shawn, Gus and later Lassie and Juliet with them doing "slumber party" things. There wasn't anything huge, but the little bits were cute.

To me, the song feels like a late 80's/early 90's pop hit that I would have loved back then, so now it always kinda fills me with joy. I think the lyrics and the upbeat feel of the music fits the show really well, and I love all the different versions they do. I don't like the lack of a good intro/credits sequence in a lot of modern day shows, and with the creator of the show literally singing the theme song kinda ties it into making the show feel kind of like a tight-knit production. I mean, I'd kind of agree that the song isn't something that's universally going to be loved, but to me it fits the show so well that it's like a necessary part of the viewing experience of an episode. 404GoonNotFound posted:Great OP, but I'm really questioning the lack of Dual Spires in the recommendation list. I've never watched Twin Peaks so watching it always makes me feel like I'm missing something, even though overall I enjoy the episode. The recommended list in the OP is just a list to get people into watching the show if they want a quick sampling of good episodes to try and so I was trying to list the good episodes that don't really require previously viewing anything else to get why the episode is good. "I guess it'll just be in my dreams that you are the Chief of Doing Me" might be my favorite line on this show, ever. But I figured having that as the title for 10.5 months was enough and the new thread needed a new title. And Chief Vick never gets any good lines, so I thought I'd use a Vick quote for awhile. A mod generally changes it every two or three episodes anyway. Annakie fucked around with this message at Feb 17, 2013 around 04:39 |

That's messed up, right? So the thing with the quotes in my OPs is that I always try to make them relevant to the character I'm describing somehow. (My Parks and Recreation OP is the same. I'm lazy about BBT because I don't care about it nearly as much as I do Psych and P&R ) Like I try to make it so each quote either describes the character or is the essence of how a character behaves. Gus has a lot of catchphrases like the Pluto line. In fact, if there was one big complaint I had about season 6, it's that it felt at times like it was turning Gus (and sometimes Shawn) into a walking catchphrase fountain. I could put Gus' Pluto line in, though, since out of all of his catchphrases, it's the closest to fitting. But, he also already has a ton of quotes, too.

Awesome OP. Can't believe it's been so long.Annakie posted:What else should I know about this show? The pop-culture references, guests and themed episodes extends to directors. John Landis, John Badham and Martha Coolidge all being examples of directors who were huge in the 80s/90s and have directed (in some cases) multiple episodes.

Amazing OP as always Annakie. I'm so ready for this show to be back. My personal favorite moment is from the s3 christmas episode. "We just saved Christmas" "Whaaaaaat!" *fist bump followed by the Charlie Brown Christmas dance*

There are now interviews with James, Dule, Tim and Maggie online, possibly also on OnDemand if you have it. I'm not going to link them because although they're really good, they're also pretty spoilery in small bits. I only watched Maggie's and Tim's and aren't going to watch the others because I saw more than I wanted to even in little flashes. For instance, Tim's showed (Lassie/Marlowe spoiler) Marlowe walking out of prison, running up to Lassie and them hugging the hell out of each other. It was awesome to see, but I'd rather have waited until the episode aired to see it. Maggie's also had (Henry's fate spoiler) Henry doing a variety of things, obviously alive and well. But the interview parts are really good, so if you don't mind being spoiled, go watch. Five days left!

I just started watching this On Demand and it is fantastic, I can't believe I missed this for so many years. I thought it was just a cheesy "Psychic" show. I just finished Dual Spires. Holy poo poo was that enjoyable. Why did it have such a break for so long?

Glad you're enjoying it, because rumour is- this is also the last season.

Considering that psych has been renewed for an eight episode season 8, it's more likely that the eighth season will be the last.
