As you guys have seen I have a rather crusty old FZR. If not.. ![]() Its a 88' model. Last April I swapped in a YZF600 engine. I built a bastard set of carbs as most of the YZFs have Ram air, and I don't. It was also partially rewired sometime in june when the main relay took a dump. front forks are from a fzr600. The list of stuff could go on for days, but enough of that. Here is what I have planned for it. New-ish fairings. Removing the lovely looking gsxr tail and going back to a brick tail. Plastic seat, none of that vinyl foam poo poo. Possibly a set of USD Gsxr forks for the front end, EFI, Dual electric fans, repainting the rims to black instead of tin man's johnson, Koso gauges, New quick connectors, Re-wrapping the harness, Possibly a new stator. ![]() next to the roomies 400 with its duct tape bodywork. His btw, is getting EFI as well and drive by wire.. ![]() Parts on the work bench! ![]() Tail and tank cover mocked up ![]() Lower mounted. I wont have the mid or upper until later this week. ![]() Removed the old body work ![]() Ha! My bikes cooling system and my urine are twins! ![]() Completely stripped of body work and ready to start on the wiring work. ![]() Weatherpacs added and taped up the headlight harness. Bonus Land rover relays! ![]() Dual fans. 10A total draw. ![]() Cleaned up the rear wiring. the gently caress was I thinking when I set this stuff up last year. Jesus. I'll add roomies 400 progress as well at some point.

Nice. I've got a nearly stock '93 FZR600 so I like seeing people do work on these things. That way you can gently caress up first, and then when I go do something similar later, I can avoid those mistakes!

those headlight eyebrows, heh

The eyebrows were a drunk joke between roomie and I. Yesterday was fieldtrip day to LA to pick up another piece of poo poo project so nothing was done on the fzr. I did get the painted exhaust and engine supports back on the other night though. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So with the new front end i'll still be running the stock wheel. I'll be boring the hub out 2mm and go with a different size bearing made for the 25mm front axle. ![]() Bonus pic of the new pile on the back of the other pile in its natural state.

omfg gently caress people in the rear end that think float bowls need 100lb-ft of torque. Guy bought the thing as a project, didn't know what he was doing. Threw it on craigslist and I came to save it. Fork seals seep a bit, rear tire is done, the rear master cylinder is dry rotted, battery, and oooollllddd gas. 99' model.

Got the carbs back together. Runs but smokes more than a diesel with a dead turbo. Parting it out.

Run it hard for a bit and see if the smoking goes away when the rings seat again. It probably will.

Valid point. its sat for a few years. Gotta replace the seals for the floatbowls and sort a few other little things before I can take it out. E: Pulled plugs. wet with gas but no sign of excessive oil. Maybe it is a stuck ring after all. cursedshitbox fucked around with this message at Feb 21, 2013 around 03:35 |

The rings don't always stick, but you'll definitely end up with crap on the bores that will wear off once you get the rings to seat, and the only way to get them to seat is lots of compression and high load so take a ride on it like you hate it ![]() Wet with gas but no sign of excessive oil is good...the older supersports are amazingly durable engines

Gonna fit a freshish tire to the rear tomorrow and take it on a 100mi trip. I'll treat it like the FZR in that case, except not excessive in twisty roads. Last year when the fzr trashed its fzr600 engine it had about the same amount of blowby and would smoke from idle to redline, plus the added benefit of fouling plugs rather fast. Supposedly this bike sat for 2.5-3 years, but I'm thinking longer.

My daytona 675 sat for maybe 2 years max, and smoked like a chimney for the first 2 rides, bad enough to make the garage quite unpleasant for awhile after the first startup. After that it cleared up, and hasn't even sipped oil in the last 2k. Go out, take it on it's trip, run it hard, and then bring it back and do a compression test and you'll know how the motor is. Also, if you haven't already, check that it makes charging voltage before you ride it for 100 miles Looking forward to seeing the revival of it, I want to do a liter supersport project sometime soon...Also, I was meaning to ask: Why the dual electric fans? I don't think there is any modern bikes that comes with 2 fans, you just don't need to move that much air to keep the bike in an appropriate temperature range in stop and go traffic. All the bikes I've ridden from that era only had one fan and were just fine in stop and go traffic. Z3n fucked around with this message at Feb 21, 2013 around 05:01 |

I've had a few cars that did the chimney thing, but not bikes. the oil is filthy nasty, however theres no sludging in the blowby tube or the crankcase itself. Its missing the rear axle nut though, wtf. Charging, oils, coolants, all that stuff will be checked out before I venture out of the garage. the FZR has caught me with my pants down once or twice. I had 1 fan on it previously and in 100* days idling in traffic the temps would sloooowly creep towards boiling over and eventually make it. The other issue is that the radiator is too small for the engine and I'm unable to fit anything else with out custom fabrication. It also likes to boil fuel when its below 1/2 tank.

Compression test results. Doing leak down in a bit. Dry 90, 90, 90, 60. wet ~90, ~90, ~90, 100. E: used my non lovely pressure gauge and got numbers 25~ higher. cursedshitbox fucked around with this message at Feb 22, 2013 around 01:58 |

Is that before or after the aggressive shakedown ride? You've covered the compression test basics I assume (unrestricted intake, good battery)?

| # ? Feb 22, 2013 02:22 |

Pre shakedown. Rear axle nut is on order, as are carb float bowl seals. Intake unrestricted, freshly charged new battery, all plugs pulled.

cursedshitbox posted:Pre shakedown. Rear axle nut is on order, as are carb float bowl seals. Thats promising then. Numbers should go up quite a bit after a few rides. If you ran the tests with the lovely gauge first and then the good one, I wonder if the increase was due to the motor spinning, even without any load on it...

parts arrived! ![]() USD gsxr forks ![]() 6 pot calipers with stainless lines. Bonus MV agusta F4 hub I'm overhauling for a friend. ![]() My TB at top, Roomies below it, and a set of FZR carbs to the right. Nothing really done to the bike today.. Still waiting on the steering head bearings and wheel bearings to get it rolling again.

Opened the R1s carbs again. the idle jets were still filthy so I swapped em with some of the same size I had that were already clean. Installed fresh bowl gaskets and the fucker idles/runs fairly well. Also got a look down into the cylinders. the cross hatching is still *very* visible on the cylinder walls. Gonna flush the brakes, change the oil/filter and take it out on a run. Now to the fzr. Forks, wiring, cluster, and some of the bodywork was finished today. ![]() Cluster installed ![]() Minimalized the forward harness ![]() All the plugs had to be hidden somewhere. Still was in the process of ringing out wires and allocating lines. ![]() Regulator/Rectifier plugs installed ![]() Tail light and plugs wired ![]() Radiator installed and fans wired. No rubbage! However, the fans will need trimming to clear the body work. ![]() Headlight bolted on. Wiring is complete with the exception of the thermal switch for the fan. I still have to add a second brace to the tail section, build the seat. The front wheel also needs to be machined out 2mm for the wheel bearings (and I have to order dust caps again), Front brakes installed and adjusted. E: oh yeah, gotta weld on a brace for the tail as I cut the big fat one off. I also have less than 4 mile long throttle cables on the way. cursedshitbox fucked around with this message at Feb 28, 2013 around 02:06 |

Minor update. FZR was backburnered for a week or so. R1 is being parted, Ran it for around 100 mi fairly hard, 1 cylinder still burns oil heavily, and the 2nd gear dog is kinda thrashed. Smoking like a garbage truck constantly wasn't a whole lotta fun.

![]() Front axle done. I designed it, and roomie machined it from cold rolled steel. ![]() Started on the seat too. Its mostly done at this point, but I did not take a photo yet. Tail is hard mounted, lights are all in, seat is hard mounted and welded together. The only things left are get the calipers on and bled, throw new hoses on the cooling system and bleed that, calibrate the gauges and install the body work.
