Nebraska: (Open Seat). *tumbleweed*

Gov. Dave Heineman (who is term limited) said today he's going to consider running. If he does, I'd bet good money on him winning.

Other GOP possibilities: Attorney General Jon Bruning (who was upset in last year's senate primary by Deb Fischer); any of Nebraska's three reps in the House (they are interchangeable)

Democratic possibilities: State Sen. Steve Lathrop; a jar of mayonnaise

As I said in the other thread, since Johanns' retirement is a surprise and the gubernatorial race is kkkkkkind of wide open, it'll be interesting to see who runs for what.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman won't run for Senate

He would've won easily had he run.

Anyway, nobody really knows who from either party is running for either Mike Johanns' seat or the governorship.

The list of names the Omaha World Herald threw out:

quote:

Potential Republican contenders for the U.S. Senate seat could now include U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, Attorney General Jon Bruning, former State Treasurer Shane Osborn, current State Treasurer Don Stenberg, Midland University President Ben Sasse and Pete Ricketts, former chief operating officer of TD Ameritrade.

On the Democratic side, potential candidates include University of Nebraska Regent Chuck Hassebrook of Lyons and State Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha.

Fortenberry would have a decent shot if he ran. Bruning lost to Deb Fischer last year. Stenberg has run like three or four times now and can't get much enthusiasm going. Ricketts challenged Ben Nelson in 2006 and failed spectacularly.

Shane Osborn was the pilot of that Navy plane that hit a Chinese fighter jet and crashed on Hainan Island in 2001.

Suttle lost re-election by 15 points; he would get killed in a statewide election.

Forgive me if this has already been addressed in the thread, but out of curiosity, what's the general consensus as to Julian Castro's ambitions beyond San Antonio?

Meanwhile in Omaha, eight-term Rep. Lee Terry (R) is 15 minutes from conceding NE-2. :woop:

How the hell did that happen? Nebraska is red enough they should have easily gerrymandered any possibility of that happening, their other two districts are red enough to absorb a few Dems.

They actually DID gerrymander the district a few years back (remember how Obama won NE-2 in 2008?) by adding Bellevue and Offutt Air Force Base to NE-1. The excuse had something to do with balanced representation or some nonsense in the event the base be put up for consideration for closing (AFAIK, Offutt is pretty safe in that regard).

But anyway:

1) Nobody really liked Terry; he'd had primary challengers the last three or so elections
2) It was essentially a referendum on Terry, but Brad Ashford was a longtime state senator, ran for mayor of Omaha, etc. — people knew him
3) This, this and this

Oh, and Ben Sasse is highlighting what'll probably be a Republican strategy in the next few years by reaching out to Hispanic voters.

Did he actually speak in Spanish last night? I was at Pageturners and the closed caption typists were having a hard time keeping up.
