Let's Play System Shock 2 [VLP]![]() gently caress Dead Space 3, let's play the progenitor to Bioshock and Deus Ex. I'm talking about the legendary survival Sci-Fi horror game System Shock 2, which was recently released on GOG - so go get that poo poo if you haven't already. I, for one, bought this game back in 1999 when it came out and still have the original disc & case (hipster points). This will be a VLP and I'll be asking you goons for input as we progress through the game. Right off the bat we're asked to enlist in one of three branching career arcs. More on this in a few. What is System Shock 2? System Shock 2 is an action role-playing survival horror video game for Microsoft Windows. The title was designed by Ken Levine and co-developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. Originally intended to be a standalone title, its story was changed during production into a sequel to the 1994 PC game System Shock; the alterations were made when Electronic Arts—who owned the Shock franchise rights—signed on as publisher. System Shock 2 was released on August 11, 1999, in North America. The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a lone soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first person shooting and exploration. It also incorporates role-playing system elements, in which the player can develop unique skills and traits, such as hacking and psionic abilities. System Shock 2 received positive reviews when released, but failed to meet commercial sales expectations. Many critics later determined that the game was highly influential in subsequent game design, particularly on first person shooters, and considered it far ahead of its time. It has been included in several "greatest games of all time" lists. In 2006, Computer and Video Games reported that System Shock 3 may be under development, but conclusive details have not surfaced about its project's status. In 2007, Irrational Games released a self-proclaimed spiritual successor to the System Shock series, entitled BioShock, to critical acclaim and strong sales. tl;dr It's a Sci-Fi survival horror with RPG elements wrapped up in a FPS perspective. You wake up aboard a starship which has gone to hell with your memory erased. As the game progresses you learn about the backstory through audio logs and ghostly apparitions. What's Going On? The story begins in 2114, forty-two years after the events of System Shock. After joining the United Nations Nominate, the protagonist, Soldier G65434-2, is assigned to the UNN Rickenbacker, a military starship. The Rickenbacker is escorting the Von Braun, an experimental faster-than-light starship, on its maiden voyage. A few months into the journey, the ships respond to a distress signal from the planet Tau Ceti V. United Nations Nominate ![]() The United Nations Nominate (UNN) was created by the ineffectual governments of Earth's nation to stop the influence of mega governmental corporations abuse and enforce strict corporate laws and shut down corporations that are noncompliant to the new law. Governmental controls over business were stepped up, and national governments instituted severe political controls, using newly built-up military forces and secret police to force control over society and business. Bureaucracy became the watchword of the day and technological development slowed to a crawl, as everything had to be signed and countersigned in triplicate. However, some corporations were not yet powerless and made several defensive stands. One of these was TriOptimum who refused to cave into government pressure still maintain a standing army and mercenaries. Eventually a truce between the governmental and megacorporate forces was reached and peace was finally achieved. Although the UNN maintains strategic control over, it has failed to win the hearts and minds of the lower classes as citizen view the UNN as just another mega corporation but with power. Setting ![]() Von Braun - The Von Braun is a starship owned and operated by the TriOptimum Corporation by CEO, Anatoly Korenchkin. It is the first starship constructed by mankind capable of faster-than-light travel. It's accompanied by the UNN Rickenbacker on its maiden voyage to explore space, where it the ship encounters the planet, Tau Ceti V. The starship was launched on February 3, 2114 to begin its maiden voyage of exploration and scientific discovery. The ship is equipped with 1.8 billion flight, scientific, and security systems which was all mainly developed by TriOptimim. In July 2114, the Von Braun and the Rickenbacker received a distress signal from the planet Tau Ceti V. UNN Rickenbacker - Military space vessel associated with the United Nations Nominate. Unlike the Von Braun, she is not equipped with the faster-than-light technology and therefore must "piggyback" with the Von Braun on her mission. After the disaster at Citadel Station, it was decided that all major space explorations, such as those operated and worked on by the TriOptimum Corporation, should be in a joint UNN operation with them. The captain of the Rickenbacker is William Bedford Diego, the hero of the battle of Boston Harbor and son of Edward Diego from the events of Citadel Station. Characters ![]() Soldier G65434-2 - Also known as 'Goggles', due to his iconic cyber rig, the player character, and the main protagonist of System Shock 2. Depending on which branch of the military you decide to choose, you'll either be in the Navy, Marines, or Psi-Ops. ![]() William Bedford Diego - Known as the Hero of the Battle of Boston Harbor, Captain William Bedford Diego, son of System Shock's Edward Diego. ![]() Dr. Marie Delacroix - Principal designer of the Faster Then Light (FTL) drive. Working under a grant from TriOptimum, Dr. Delacroix was able to design a device that can bend and warp space. ![]() Dr. Janice Polito - The head scientist and computer engineer working aboard the starship Von Braun. Her office is on the Operations Deck. She is a close friend of Dr. Marie Delacroix. XERXES - Artificial Intelligence assigned to control and maintain the systems of the ship Von Braun. ![]() SHODAN - An artificial intelligence who was granted true sapience and immediately went insane, SHODAN believes herself to be the perfect life form, a goddess compared to the wretched Humans who created her. Branches of Service - Make Your Choice! ![]() At the beginning of the game we are asked in which branch of UNN military service we'd like to enlist. Unlike many games, classes in System Shock 2 do not actually limit the types of weapons or ability a player can use, but determine the priorities one can use them. Marines - The soldier. Specializes in exotic weapon types, with bonuses to Energy and Heavy weaponry. Also proficient in standard weapons, of course. Bonuses also available for strength and endurance, this is the class to pick if you want to run around and destroy poo poo. Navy - The hacker. This class has bonuses to Research, Repair, Modification, Cybernetic Affinity, and Maintenance. Not too shabby with standard weapons either, just eschews the Energy and Heavy weaponry proficiency in favor of the aforementioned technical skills. O.S.A. Special Ops - The Jedi. This is a grand deviation from either of the other two classes, which all things considered are not that different from each other. These guys have the ability to use telekinetic powers through the use of a "Psi-Amp" augmentation, which is a glowing sphere that plugs into your wrist. Not nearly as talented with weaponry, a player must rely on less conventional tactics to see them through. Votes Navy - 19 Marines - 1 O.S.A. - 17 *Update - After a close race, Navy has edged out the O.S.A. for a victory. Episodes: *Note - I recommend you playback the videos in "Original" quality (above 1080p), as this helps to combat youtube's penchant for mangling the contrast on darker parts of the video. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mods: New Dark - all the things ADaoB - unofficial patch, fixes and changes a ton of stuff while staying mostly true to the original. Rebirth - HD models SHTUP - HD objects Tacticool - HD weapons Vurt's Space - HD Space killahcavalry fucked around with this message at Mar 24, 2013 around 16:52 |

A quick mod guide, or links to the mods you're using, would be a huge help to people like me who need to wait for their next paycheck before buying this and who want to graphics/balance mod it up before playing for the first time. That said I've always been interested in seeing this title. E: Navy, why not? C-Euro fucked around with this message at Feb 19, 2013 around 01:16 |

I finally got my old copy working after various past failures, two days before the GOG announcement. Did some light modding but skipped rebirth and balance changers. Use whatever class you want, but bash plenty of heads in like a man and Drink all booze on sight. Even if you go PSI, especially if you go PSI. EDIT: And don't forget about the Basketball EDIT: vvv He still has to remember to use it and not lose it Section Z fucked around with this message at Feb 19, 2013 around 01:41 |

Sure, I'll try to flesh the mods section out a bit - but the link Niggurath posted does a pretty good job. Yes, my other two LP's are still in progress, both having been updated fairly recently. All three are vastly different games, however, and help keep the process fresh. So far we have four votes for Navy. Edit: I know about the stuff, Section Z, don't worry. killahcavalry fucked around with this message at Feb 19, 2013 around 01:47 |

I'm going to throw my vote in for Navy as well. Fits well with the theme of a dystopian cyberpunk future.

Great first video. I've heard nothing but praise for this game, so I'll be looking forward to seeing what this is all about. Navy for me.

The video looks really great at original quality. Looking forward for the rest of the LP. I'm going have to go with everyone else and say Navy.

I vote OSA. I've never tried OSA in this game, and it seems like it would be pretty fun to watch.

This is a nutty game based in a spaceship. You should be a crazy technohacker. Navy.

I've gotta say Navy, OSA looks neat also, but Navy seems to offer a decent middle path of running and gunning with cool hacky stuff.

OSA because I hate fun and enjoy watching people suffer.

Navy is pulling out to an early 7-2-0 lead... wasn't expecting such a landslide.

I would immagine it's because everyone so far has either played the game and knows navy is the easiest way or hasn't and doesn't know that psi ops would be the more fun choice. Thus I'm voteing for psi ops.

OSA, having pull will help you get lots of nanites and items throughout the game that are hidden where you cant reach. Straight up use the first cybernetic modules on standard weapons so that you can use the shotgun and the pistol.

OSA, that seems a lot more interesting than the usual fps fodder.

Chiming in with another vote for OSA. I haven't seen it done before so it seems more interesting. Also you're using the tacticool pack right? Why wasn't the pistol HD like the energy one? Triggsz fucked around with this message at Feb 19, 2013 around 13:45 |

This poo poo is close! Navy - 13 Marines - 1 O.S.A. - 14 Yeah, I'm using tacticool but the pistol wasn't compatible with ADaoB. There's a version that works with ADaoB 0.28, but I'm using 0.30. I can try it anyways and see what happens, might not be a big deal.

OSA because I never did an OSA playthrough when I did this game. Don't go pure "Mage", though, dump some points into weapons for sure if you can
|
| # ? Feb 19, 2013 14:49 |

Navy! It's the best path.

Edit: Too late. I'm glad OSA won. I could never get into being a psi ops guy in all my playthroughs. The powers you start with seemed very weak or situational. I'd always end up caving and putting all my modules into guns. PandasEVERYWHERE fucked around with this message at Feb 19, 2013 around 15:03 |

PandasEVERYWHERE posted:Edit: Too late. You have to pick a weapon type even if you go OSA, more or less, and even then OSA is really challenging until max rank, at which point you basically become immortal. The other paths are even easier though. vvv Edit: Also voting OSA in that case. vvv
