A co-worker of mine has offered for me and my fiancee to use her "week" of a timeshare. Since it's in Florida and I don't want to go to Florida I said "no thanks". She told me that where it is doesn't matter, that I can pick out just about anywhere on the RCI website and pay a trivial transfer fee. Since I'm going to need to honeymoon soon. I have considered her offer. Has anyone here used them before? Are they nice? It'll possibly save me some money but you only get one honeymoon (if you do it right) so I'm caught between wanting to be fiscally responsible and also not a cheapskate.

P.S I know timeshares are terrible things to own. I'm not going to be buying one!

MY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF CURRENT EVENTS IS EXCEEDED ONLY BY MY UNQUENCHABLE THIRST FOR PISS. FUK U AMERIKKKA!!

My parents have been with RCI for many years. They've never had any problems swapping weeks or resorts.
I think they work on a rating system for properties, and a colour system for times of year.
Eg - something in the summer is a 'red' week, which is more valuable than somethin in oct, so swapping should be trivial.

I am the Lizard Queen!

My mother in law has it and seems to love it. Internationally, I wasn't terribly impressed with the resort options, but I'm picky and have enough money to be picky. Seemed great if you wanted to go to the Caribbean and just stay in one place for a week.

I own a week. Are they terrible to buy? For most people I would say yes but there are some who love it and have more than one week. I have a friend who owns a few weeks in different places. One is a 4 bdrm chalet at a big ski resort. No kids but lots of family who love to ski. They all know which week to be there. Works great for them.

But to your question. The resorts tend to be nice. I have traded my week many times and only had one bad experience. If you aren't too fussy as to place and can get a decent price on airfare then go for it. I do find that's an issue for us as the less expensive charters never seem to fly on the timeshare dates so either have to pay big bucks or drive if possible.

Options can be limited but if you are flexible on location and are patient to keep looking for preferred location you can luck out. And make sure to check if the resort is under renovations. If it is confirm that the renos won't mess up vacation. Maybe you don't care if the on site restaurant is closed because there are others nearby and unit has a kitchen but won't be happy if the main pool is out of commission.
