Kingdom Hearts is an odd little game. A collaboration between Squaresoft (now Square Enix) and Disney, it combines elements of the Final Fantasy series with beloved Disney classics to make something quite...different. The first arc of the series, spanning from the first game (2002) to Kingdom Hearts III (in development, maybe?), incorporates a shitton of characters, plot points, and background into its overall narrative.

Thing is, there was once a time when this series was relatively playable in its entirety, when all you needed was a PS2 and a Gameboy Advance and you were good to go. Cue TGS 2007, when Tetsuya Nomura, the series’ director, announced three new games: one for the DS, another for the PSP, yet another for mobile. A few more years and he would announce that the latest title would be on the 3DS. The story was scattered across a wide spread of different consoles. In effect, this fractured the Kingdom Hearts fanbase probably for the better because they are notoriously bad or just anyone who wanted to follow the story.

This LP is an attempt to put the games all in one place, especially after the latest, Dream Drop Distance, established that every small detail is vital in order to comprehend the story as a whole. Especially when the plot devolves into an incomprehensible clusterfuck only a few games into the series. Not to mention extra scenes added to Japanese-only remakes, which later games will call back to. A lot of people will argue that there’s really no point in trying to piece together the mess, but for people like me who love the crazy, never-ending rabbit hole that the narrative of Kingdom Hearts has come to resemble, the experience of putting all the pieces together is worth it.

At the very least, I will go through KH1, Re:Chain of Memories, KH2, and Birth By Sleep. I’ll be figuring out what to do about 3/DS recording in the meanwhile.

Spoiler Policy

This game is over ten years old now. Regardless, since this is a series LP: no spoilers, tagged or untagged! This means any detail regarding the plot, bosses, locations, etc. Please don’t pull that “Wait until you see what happens next!” bullshit, either. There is a KH megathread, if you must talk about something farther into the series than where we are, but be aware that untagged spoilers are allowed up to major plot points of Birth By Sleep and beyond (which are tagged).

How is this LP set up?

I’ll be covering everything outside of opening/closing FMVs in screenshots, with videos for important cutscenes and boss fights. This will not be a 100% playthrough.

As far as extra content goes, I’m planning on doing some write-ups on the music of this series, because it is (for the most part) fantastic. These will probably be far and few in between until we get to later parts of the series and things begin to connect thematically. Final Mix (Japanese-exclusive) content will be covered, but all of it is likely going to come from outside sources.

As far as commentary format goes: I have a co-commentator/sworn enemy good friend kuulgai who will be joining us on this magical adventure of Disney and anime. All commentary (anything not from the game itself) will be in italics.

Everything following this image is melodicwaffle’s commentary, whereas...

...This picture indicates kuulgai’s stupid remarks brilliant and inspired words.

The Characters

Our hero, Sora.

Single-handedly keeps the hair gel industry going. He has a thing for symbolism and sleeping. Sometimes both, at the same time. Pretty goofy.

His best friend, Riku.

Riku is the mature, coolheaded one of his friends who is about to get drowned never backs down in the face of danger. Sometimes, this is to his benefit. Other times...

And their love interest friend who is a girl, Kairi.

Plucky and kindhearted, Kairi will definitely not be an object of contention between the two male characters. We actually don’t see her too often.

Thinking of you, wherever you are.

We pray for our sorrows to end,
and hope that our hearts will blend.
Now I will step forward to realize this wish.

And who knows:
starting a new journey may not be so hard
or maybe it has already begun.

There are many worlds,
but they share the same sky—
one sky, one destiny.

Part 1: Awakening

You should probably click on that picture!

♪: Dive into the Heart -Destati- (A)

Take your time. Don’t be afraid.

Welcome to the Awakening. The Dive to the Heart serves as a litmus test of sorts, both for our hero and for you. In the latter case, it’s to see if you know basic video game controls.

So let’s take our first steps.

We are rewarded with more cryptic words, a flimsy cartoon shield, a glowstick, and a Master Sword knock-off. Neat!

Unfortunately, we can only choose one to roll with.

The power of the warrior.
Invincible courage.
A sword of terrible destruction.

The power of the mystic.
Inner strength.
A staff of wonder and ruin.

The power of the guardian.
Kindness to aid friends.
A shield to repel all.

The weapons establish your starting stats: the sword raises strength; the staff, MP; the shield, defense. In addition to choosing one weapon to wield, though, you also have to choose one to give up. Giving up the sword or shield decreases strength and defense, respectively, but giving up the staff decreases your Ability Points (AP) by one. This is kind of crucial, as we’ll see when this becomes relevant.

Canon-wise it’s funny that this destiny-locking and ability rewriting decision is made when our young protagonist has absolutely no idea what’s going on. It’s like choosing to be an art major in a dream and then waking up to find your tuition already paid and your talents rewritten for still life painting.

So of course I give up the staff, just to make things harder. I’ll be going with the sword. Not my usual choice, but it’s fun to experiment.

♪: Dive into the Heart -Destati- (B)

After we make our choices, the world decides to self-destruct.

And our hero takes another fall. This game is big on falling.

The franchise in general seems to big on not only falling, but falling headfirst. It happens so frequently I wonder if the characters themselves think landing with your face is the best way to go.

fuckin rad

Use this power to protect yourself and others.

Or mercilessly beat up children wielding jump ropes and soccer balls, but fighting for justice is preferred.

How terrifying adorable

Kingdom Hearts really spices up the third person hack n’ slash genre by giving you three other combat options, as seen in the Command menu, you won’t use. My younger self first playing KH really agreed with the ‘mash x’ strategy.

You only need to kill one of these guys in order to advance.

Or not. I’m glad Mysterious Voice is pulling for us though.

Seriously, Mysterious Voice has been all omniscient and wise up to this point but now decides to be that dude in a movie theatre going “YO DAWG THE KILLER’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU WATCH OUT”

Locking on helps a lot in this game because the targeting system in this game sucks. The game automatically targets whichever enemy’s closest to you (with very varying success), but hitting the lock-on button focuses it on a specific one so you can keep an eye on it. Unfortunately, this also makes the camera freak the gently caress out on occasion.

This treasure chest doesn’t actually have anything in it. It’s just to make sure you really know how to use the field-contextual command.

Our hero, in response to this locked door crisis, thinks: “What would Donkey Kong do?”

After a rigorous training exercise, the door materializes and we can finally get out of here.

I...I guess doors really don’t need to be physically pulled open here?

These doors are of an innovative new ‘tutorial-lock’ design.

What could be behind the door? Find out next time!

Part of me wonders if Nomura expected this to be the mega-hit it turned out to be. You want to be number one. You want to see rare sights. You’re afraid of getting old.

Anyways, the choices you pick determine your level-up rate. Beginning your journey at dawn causes you to level up at a faster rate until you hit 40, after which more experience points will be required to level up. Usually, people just whale on the hands and ignore the head, so I guess being different counts as being strategic?

Hey, buddy, if you can just let me run up your arm to cut up your eyes and not swat me off with your free hand or anything that’d be grreaat.

Its other attack is launching darkness at you from its chest. You can deflect them by hitting them, but let’s not drag out a fight longer than it has to be.

And down here are Selphie from FF8 and Wakka from FF10. They don’t get nice pictures because they weren’t player characters.

Also I’d just like to point out that the kids don’t actually live on this island, but a separate one (Destiny Islands, after all). They get here by boat. Tiny, fragile-looking boats. Which they use to cross an open ocean.

...Sure! That’s safe!

Wait, why are you building a makeshift raft out of fallen branches and bedsheets when there are boats that actually work right there you use frequently to get onto this island? Guess they never noticed those.

Apart from being the Final Fantasy half of a Final Fantasy-Disney crossover, we get a fun option after speaking to each character...

♪: Bustin’ Up on the Beach

Okay, don't hold back!

“The jump rope, like the folding chair, is one of the seven deadliest weapons!”

Selphie’s original nunchaku was replaced with a jump rope. Kind of cute. She has two attacks, both of which can be deflected for a tech point. For one of them, if you wait for the whole animation to play out, her jump rope bonks her on the head, earning you an additional point.

Aw, I can’t believe I lost!

Selphie’s easy to beat, though. Next.

Show me your stuff!

Just like in Final Fantasy X, Wakka attacks by throwing blitzballs in people’s faces. Fighting Wakka is like playing baseball: just hit the ball back at him and it’ll stun him for several seconds, allowing you to get a combo in. He gives out 1 tech point for regular throws and 2 for his charge-up throw.

The Destiny Islands kids’ version of baseball is to hit the ball and then mercilessly break splinters into the pitcher’s face. Really paradisal.

Aw, man... That really hurt!

You’re going down!

As if

Tidus is the hardest of the three to fight, though. He’s the most difficult to read and deflecting his attacks actually staggers you for a couple of seconds.

Aw, man... I’m really off today.

Okay, time to finish finding those quest items—

No, it’s time for Sora to prove himself king of the beach once and for all.

Let’s get ‘im!

Pretty much the same as the last three fights, except all at once. A good strategy is to take down Tidus, as he’s the hardest hitter, then take out Selphie, and finish off Wakka. You get a potion for beating them.

But there’s one more guy we’ve gotta take down on our road to the top...

Did you get everything we need for the raft? I gave my stuff to Kairi. Hey Sora, how about a quick round? Grab your sword.

Okay, you’re on!

This one decides the champion! Ready or not!

So the Riku fight is way tougher than any of the Final Fantasy kids; he hits a lot harder and it can be tricky to work in a full combo. I’d recommend watching the video for this one. (Where did he learn to jump like that)

Sometimes, right in the middle of your combo, he’ll fall back like this, then project himself at you. It’s got a weird hitbox and is pretty difficult to avoid, especially if you’re just mashing X.

The biggest problem is that Riku just jumps all over the place. When he’s not doing that, he’s just blocking all your attacks. He is definitely beatable, though; it just takes some getting used to his pattern. Beating Riku will also net you a potion as a reward.

Sora and Riku have a bit of friendly competition going on; they keep track of who wins and how many times. It has literally no effect on anything for the rest of the game

The last item we have to retrieve. Let’s get back to Kairi and end the day.

So, Kairi’s home is out there somewhere, right?

Could be.

Who knows? If we have to, we’ll think of something else.

“As we’re drowning on the sinking raft.”

What would you do there?

Well, I haven’t really thought about it.

I’ve always wondered why we’re here on this island. If there are any other worlds out there, why did we end up on this one? And suppose there are other worlds... Then ours is just a little piece of something much greater. So we could have just as easily ended up somewhere else, right?

Is Destiny Islands just a small planet full of tiny islands, or is Riku talking about going to different countries? Does Riku think a raft is going to take him to SPACE?

Exactly. That’s why we need to go out there and find out. Just sitting out here won’t change a thing. It’s the same old stuff. So let’s go.

You’ve been thinking a lot lately, haven’t you?

Thanks to you. If you hadn’t come here, I probably would’ve never thought of any of this.

Kairi, thanks.

You're welcome.

“I accept your thanks for my existence.”

Sora.

You wanted one, didn’t you?

A paopu fruit...

If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined. They’ll remain a part of each other’s lives no matter what. C’mon, I know you want to try it.

What are you talking—

Meanwhile, somewhere very far away...

Hey, cool, a letter! It’s got Mickey’s head on it, I wonder what it says inside—

You might recognize the hedge art as some older Mickey Mouse characters, as they appeared in one of my favorite shorts, The Band Concert.

Man, Donald’s got a mastery of the arcane arts and he’s at best prank shock gum?

Hey there, Donald. G’morning.

절대 용서하지 않을 것이다

Sorry for the huge delay, there were...a lot of issues to work out. I'll be working on fixing the first two posts and figuring out how to deal with the fact that YouTube flagged the opening video for copyright on the music.

Meanwhile, our arts and crafts project gone wrong raft is going to need a name! Either make one up or we can go with the two given options, Highwind or Excalibur! Whichever gets the most votes goes.

(I'm not naming the raft Excalibur.)

You did wrong, Jack,
rest your soul.

I nominate Trainwreck, so the characters can ride along with us.

You know, this opening segment feels like it should be incredibly boring and trite, but somehow it isn't. Maybe it's just that some of the optional fights are fun- the 3 on 1 and Riku matches can be legitimately difficult, especially if you picked the staff (which doesn't actually give any benefit until a little later) as your advantage.

I also always assumed that the kids were just kind of idiots and assumed that if you went far enough on watercraft, you ended up in space or something. To be fair, their options for extraterrestrial travel are a bit limited.
