My impulse to make my cats experience the snow and then run back inside is so strong when snow falls that I'm pretty sure it's a universal behavior.

Didn't Arizona have a blizzard last spring too? I don't think this is as uncommon as you're making it out to be, OP. e: yep, there was one last march: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/ma...a-snow-20120319

Prescott and Flagstaff are up in the north which is also to say up in the mountains, so they do get snow pretty often. Phoenix is not in the mountains so snow down here is much more rare. Your article doesn't apply.

Dodecalypse posted:Didn't Arizona have a blizzard last spring too? I don't think this is as uncommon as you're making it out to be, OP. That was in northern Arizona, which is pretty common. I think the last time I saw snow here was in 1999, at my parents' house out in the desert an hour northeast of Phoenix. I live in central Phoenix now, and there was snow covering the ground when I left for work this afternoon. e: fb

Dodecalypse posted:Didn't Arizona have a blizzard last spring too? I don't think this is as uncommon as you're making it out to be, OP. "Arizona" and "Phoenix" are not interchangeable. Phoenix is in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, and receives some of the least annual rainfall amounts on earth. Parts of Arizona are in the Rocky Mountains, Steppes, Colorado River, etc. Arizona is one of the most water-rich states in the union as a result of our massive water table. This contributes to a large amount of snowfall in the "high country", which is anything from about 30 miles north of Phoenix (between Anthem/Carefree and Black Canyon City) where the mountains start, all the way up to the Northern boarder.

We should start a thread in GBS talking about how weird it was to have a warm sunny day in February. The rain rolled back into Seattle this afternoon and it felt normal again, like a comforting blanket. A blanket of cold sticky slugs, moss, and passive-aggressiveness.

Eastern Kansas, and my university cancelled class two hours ago when not a flake had fallen. The last time they did this, two years ago, we had snow a foot and a half high and two days off class. I obviously no longer care how much it snows here (they can't "un-cancel" class) but the worst of it is expected early morning to early afternoon tomorrow. Definitely not doing anything tomorrow, my RWD sedan can't even handle two inches with winter tires.

Tucson, AZ reporting in! Today was wonderful. Rode my bike to school and it was actually snowing really hard (I lived in Chicago during the 2011 blizzard so I do have a frame of reference) Nothing stuck because it was about 50 degrees out but the clouds parted for a couple hours and the temp dropped to just above freezing really fast. Now it's snowing again, big perfect flakes, and it's sticking. I really hope it snows all night so we can have something to play with in the morning. Having grown up in the desert, I can't imagine ever getting tired of the snow.

How lovely, I never saw any snow. Was working with hand tools just inside the truck loading door to a metal shop/warehouse just west of I-17/Indian School Rd. today; got to watch the rain come down hour after hour, and then when pea-sized hail came, I stomped around outside and it stuck in and froze to my hair. That was awfully fun.My mom drove to Cave Creek to see the snow and sent me a picture.

Big deal. It snowed in AZ the last time I was there 4 years ago. But I got this sweet shot of the Grand Canyon with snow on it. And yes I understand they are on opposite sides of the state. But it was also snowing in Scottsdale where I was staying.

It can snow in Phoenix. It isn't common but not insanely rare. You need to realize that even downtown Phoenix is at an elevation of about 1100' and the north and east stretches of the metropolitan area can hit elevations of 2500'. The surrounding mountains are about 4000'. Just need enough cold air. And while some of this was snow, from a scientific standpoint (which is always correct) a lot of it was graupel which is a little more like hail than snow. So BFD. Phoenix got it's one day of weather for the year.

Fuuuuuuck, I was just talking to a friend of mine about how I wanted to move there eventually because I'm so tired of dealing with Old Man Winter. I've lived in the Midwest my whole life and after 24+ years I have decided that I'm only cool with winter between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Guess I'll have to set my sights on moving to Honolulu. Nah gently caress that I don't want to pay 4 bucks for a gallon of milk edit: snow is also cool if snowboarding is involved, but even then I'd rather go on a trip and deal with the snow on my own terms.

I moved from Phoenix to San Antonio in 2006, and the difference between the two cities getting a dusting to a half-inch of snow is hilarious. In phoenix it's a celebration and there's ridiculous pictures of snowmen scraped from the rock garden, and in San Antonio the city immediately shuts down and everyone panics. Enjoy your day Phoenix!
