Welcome to my one-shot thread! Format: PbP D&D 4e.

You have angered Emperor Meng the Demented and the sentence is death. Now, you don't want to die, so Meng, the most majestic of might monarchs, decreed that you may slaughter yourselves for his amusement. There is a method to the madness, however. Collect a certain number of magically infused balls and bring them to your home base to appease the imperial majesty of Meng. Just be sure not to bleed on him. Filthy. Disease.

My next installment of one-shots is quite different. It is going to be an objective-based PvP arena against other player characters! This will likely be most imbalanced because 4th edition is not set up for PC vs PC combat, but we'll roll with it and see how it goes! Things to keep in mind:

  • Capture the McGuffin-esque: Beat your way into enemy territory and steal their McGuffin. Toying with the possibility of having neutral McGuffins spawn and the teams can capture those as well.
  • PCs are very high damaging and very frail. You will drop hard and fast, so take this into account when creating your character.
  • Zero roleplaying, but that does not mean zero skill/ability checks.

My aim is to have quite a large cast of players; my goal is make sure that everyone who wants to play can get in. Of course, the more players that are playing, the slower the game gets. I'm toying around with ways of streamlining time between turns.

  • Initiative groups of three-ish all act at the same 'time.'
  • 24 hour limits between most recent turn posted and the current player's turn. If 24 hours are up, the team captain plays for him. If 12 more hours pass, I'll either pass your turn or act for you.
  • Team initiatives, where one full team goes and then the other team goes. (Not a fan of this idea)

I'm also going to introduce Team Captains, which should be self explanatory. They don't direct what your PCs do, but hold a leadership role. Strategy planning and all that. They need to be fairly active in case one of their teammates goes AWOL. Team Captains will also pick their teammates at the start of the game.

The entire game will be one, long encounter. However, you may spend one full turn (three actions) to rest while within your base to recover all of your encounter and daily powers and spend as many healing surges as you wish.

When you go down to 0 HP, you are given a choice when it comes to your turn. You may make a Death Saving Throw as normal or you may respawn back your home base with all your encounter and daily powers restored, healed to full HP and surges, and one action point instead of your Death Saving Throw.

  • Level 4
  • 3200 gold to spend on items, if you want to blow 56% of your wad on +2 armor, knock yourself out.
  • Consumables up to your level are fine.
  • One free feat: Versatile Expertise. You want no OAs with Staff Expertise or +1 damage with CA with light blades, pony up.
  • Backgrounds are fine except HP altering ones.
  • Themes A-OK.
  • In case it needs to be said, no Dragonmarks.
  • Going to be a stickler on rules, especially on drawing/sheathing/drinking/stowing items, keep this in mind
  • Skype text chat rooms for teams and basic gameplay questions is so huge that I am this close to making it a requirement
  • Note if you are willing to be a Team Captain and can commit to it

I like lists...

With that out of the way, feel free to post your character sheets and do what you can to make yourself desirable to the Team Captains! This is all highly experimental so by all means, leave comments, thoughts and suggestions!

Competence on the battlefield is a myth. The side which screws up next to last wins, it's as simple as that.

Would you be alright with newbies signing up? I've only played a one-shot a couple of years ago.

If your able to push it to 5pm (I get out of work at 4pm and it's a bit of a drive) I would be interested in joining.

@Burning Justice, I might push it back, but I'm going to wait and see how much interest is generated first. I'll keep your posted!

@Lawinator, sure thing! You'll never get experience unless people let you play, right? I only ask that you have a basic understanding of how D&D 4e works (i.e. what encounter powers are, how you make attacks or skill checks, being able to make a character.) Knowing how exactly Grapples work is not needed at all; in fact, players can attest that I've asked how the hell poo poo like Run actions work! Also, added you to the roll20 campaign.

On that note, if your name on roll20 is not immediately obvious to your SA name, leave me a note here saying what your name is on roll20 so I can properly forecast how many players are interested.

I am interested as well, though I can't make it if it isn't pushed back. On Friday I am working till 5:30 est, though luckily my commute is all of a 30 second walk. I have been playing 4e off and on since release, but I haven't used roll20 before and really want to learn. The last time I used anything close to a virtual tabletop was on AOL around 1993. My Roll20 name is the same as my sa name.

edit: if this particular Friday game doesn't work for me I would love to play other times during the week. Nights I tend to be most available to play in descending order are Tuesday, Monday, Thursday, Friday.

I'd be very interested in this, as I've only played one 4E campaign and this seems like an easy way to make a fun character sheet and run with it without having to worry about backstory and such.

5PM EST would probably be better for me as well, but I could probably handle 4 if you did stick with that.

@nesbit37, Sorry, looks like we'll be going with 4:00 PM EST, with Neraren I'll have five players (or four, if the one who applied on roll20 is the same person, which it very well could be). However, I will most certainly keep your time schedule in mind for future games!

@Neraren, you're in. Go ahead and send a request to my campaign on roll20 and let me know in this thread who you are on roll20. If you look like you'll be 10-15 minutes late, no worries, just keep in touch with me via this thread or the roll20 campaign thread.

Yeah, my plan is to constantly change the date and time of each game so people who never get to play due to working weekends or nights can have an opportunity to play. I think for my second oneshot I'm going to try to push it closer to 1:00 PM EST, we'll see how it goes!

Finished our session a little bit ago. Just wanted to come in and say that it was a blast. Hidden rooms and close battles and dynamic fields where you have to avoid lasers and poison darts while fighting bats and zombies and a necromancer. You can't get better than that in a one-shot. Was a lot of laughs and a great way to spend the afternoon.

Putting the finishing touches on another one-shot, really excited about this one. I'm intending for 5 players, level 8, so no brand newbies. Being able to quickly decide which of your 5 powers you want to use is all the experience you'll need though. Having the character builder to calculate attack and damage is highly recommended as well. I'm shooting for this Wednesday afternoon-ish, but it will probably next week on Tuesday. Let me know which works best for everyone.

Make an Orokos account and either painstakingly fill it out by hand, or simply upload an exported .dnd4e file to it and it will do the rest.

General Zhao, (Reskinned Dragonborn) Monk

Admiral Zhao was once a man of infamy, a great military leader with grand ambitions, his last act on his home plane was to kill the moon spirit, slaying a god with his fist. Too bad there were more spirits and boy were they pissed.

Revived on a different plane thanks to many shady underworld dealings, the re-born General Zhao serves lord Kefka to get the chance to top his previous achievements, and this time: survive it without any do-gooder spirit-magic-thing messing it up!

Death, Revenant Avenger

Being the Grim Reaper is a thankless job. You never meet anyone at their best. Always whining about life being so unfair. Sometimes you just have to get away. To not be in charge for a while. Sometimes you just have to split off a part of your omniscient, omnipotent self and let someone else take command.

@Manic_Misanthrope, looks good!

@djw175, also good!

thought as a sidenote, you both still have 2600gp to buy more magic item junk if you want

Also! If you want to play as class but their damage types don't line up with your villain, we'll houserule most/all of them to make thematic sense, potential abuse be damned! For example, if you want to play as some random Heartless from Kingdom Hearts, but you have your heart set on being a Warden, we'll change the damage types of certain powers to Necrotic (or whatever heartless do, gently caress I don't remember KH at all), provided you reflavor and reskin the attack to make thematic sense.

BARK BARK BARK

Shig, the Rat Lord (Hengeyokai Druid)

In his former life, the creature currently known as Shig was the son of a wealthy human count, first in line to inherit the thone. He was a foppish and greedy brat, however, and showed little promise as a future leader. His ailing father, concerned for the fate of the family name should it fall into his hands, met discretely with a local witch and had her weave a curse that would remove the idiot son from the picture. Unwilling to commit outright murder, he opted instead to transform his son into a rat and let him loose into the sewers, where he couldn't embarrass the family anymore. The plan seemed to work until a week later reports began to surface of a half-rat half-man creature skulking around the alleys at night. Somehow, whether by a botched casting or plain ol' ironic justice, the idiot son recovered from the curse, gaining the ability to shift from rat to human at will, usually preferring something in between. He could also communicate with his rodent brethren and over the coming months amassed a loyal following of hundreds of sewer rats, proclaiming himself the Rat Lord. His father's barony eventually fell to plague and starvation caused by a massive invasion of vermin, targeting specific food stores and hospitals with coordination never before seen in rodent-kind.

While once filled with vengeful wrath for being denied his birthright, he's come to accept his place among the rats. After all, Shig is the leader of thousands and the barony he was once heir to is in ruins. Currently, he works for Lord Kafka under the terms of a "diplomatic alliance" between the rulers of man and rodent, though Shig secretly dreams of usurping the ruler and keeping Castle Herobane for himself and his rats.

Shig's not an existing villain as far as I know, but I suppose he's loosely based on Willard or that Rat King guy from the Ninja Turtles. Flavor-wise, any mention of insects in powers and such are switched to rats, obviously. When using his wild shape power, Shig turns into a single, slightly larger than normal rat and calls other rodents from every dark corner and crevice to combine in a massive swarm, rather than turning into a full swarm himself.

EDIT: Forgot to equip a few things.

Seifer's a loose cannon, a rebellious, outspoken glory seeker, and a loving rear end in a top hat to boot. When he failed to defend Ultimecia against his arch-rival, Squall Lionheart, he was banished to another plane entirely. Only his incredible skill with the gunblade keeps him in the favor of the world's ruler, the mercurial Lord Kefka, but Seifer needs something to defend so he doesn't feel like such a sack of poo poo deep down. Vader, Sith Lord (Paladin)

There once was a knight, massive in stature, his name now forgotten, who was a champion of order, brining light and salvation to dark places, striving to better the lives of the common people. For a time, he fought evil alone, a solitary protector, but word of his deeds spread, and he was welcomed into an order of like-minded warriors who had banded together to serve their common goals. And for a time, it was good - he accomplished even greater feats, and pushed himself to being the best person he could be.

But all good things must come to an end. There was a great falling-out between the knight and the order, over philosophy and methods and core, unshakeable beliefs. The knight did battle against his closest friend deep inside a smouldering volcano, and it was there that he met his end. The knight lost the high ground, and his friend drove him into the molten heart of the volcano, where he would not have survived...had there not been a divine intervention. Bane himself was watching the knight's battle, and in admiration of his skill and devotion, the god of war decided to step in. And so, the knight was scooped from the magma by invisible hands and carried to Chernoggar, his battered and burned body ensconced in a masterfully-wrought suit of full plate and his sword arm blessed with Bane's favour.

He took for himself the name Vader, and returned to the Prime Material, bent on revenge. His former comrades were driven to ground and hunted down one by one by the armoured colossus, cut down as Vader shrugged off their mightiest blows again and again. And when the last member of the order had been slain, the dark lord pledged his service and his blade to Kefka, not out of respect or loyalty, but out of a simple burning drive to prove himself in combat as the ultimate warrior, and offer himself up to Bane as a true champion of the realms.
