 So with the success of the Dominions 3 Arena Championship Season Two (22 YouTube viewers can't be wrong!) we're ready to start Season Three of the BEST DAMNED FAKE INTERNET SPORTS EVENT EVER (no offense to any other fake internet sports event). First and most important: You do NOT need to own or know anything about Dominions 3 to participate! I'll be handling all the arena fights. All you'll have to do is reference a really slick webpage, do some basic math, and email me. The Dominions experts will hopefully chime in and answer any questions you might have. You can reference the earlier seasons in the following posts: Season One Rules and Start Season Two Rules and Start Second and less important: You did not need to participate in earlier Seasons. You don't even need to read about them. The Basic Overview In the Dominions 3 Arena Championship Season Three, participants will create a team of 3 competitors. They will choose a partner (or we'll find you a partner) and that person will also build a 3-combatant team. Together, your six dudes will fight six other dudes in a double-elimination tournament. The winning team gets fame, glory and the adoration of approximately 20 people. You and your partner can coordinate as much as you want but I'd appreciate it if each person did build their own combatants instead of one team member building all 6. Talk about it as much as you want but ultimately make your own decisions for your own pixelmans. Your competitors will be built using Build Points. Build Points will be used to choose a chassis, equipment, and pay for gems used for spell casting for each of your three combatants. CHANGE FROM SEASON TWO: Season Three will be back to double-elimination. You'll need to find a partner (should be simple) and build a 3-man team that will be combined with your buddy's three man team. The Arena I whipped up a quick and simple map for the game to take place on. I'll have to make some modifications to it once we figure out how many players are participating. The Arena province will be neutral in terms of dominion at the time of the fight. If you don't know what "dominion" means, don't worry about it. It just means I'm trying to keep one of the potential external variables out of the equation. Mods Used Dominions 3 is very customizable. There are many talented people who have put together packages that modify some of the basic fundamentals of the game. You can add and modify equipment, spells, units, even entire nations. For this game, we will be using a modified version of the Awesome Suite of mods. I will make that mod package available (and the map) to anyone who asks (if they want to use it for their own testing). For those who aren't familiar with the mods and how they interact with the game, I will explain further when I go step-by-step into making your competitor. Fight Results I will video record each fight and put it up for view. I will spoiler-text the results so people who want to watch the fights can without knowing the end result. In Season Two, I started doing detailed play-by-play reports of the fights so even if you don't want to watch, you can still get an idea of what happened. Balance Issues There will be balance issues. There are too many variables out there to achieve balance across everything available. However, if our Dominions 3 gurus see something that is truly out of whack, we'll modify the costs. There will be a post following this one with cost adjustments and outright bans of certain things. Betting Just like Season Two, I will not be doing betting this time. Someone else may take up that task if they wish, but it takes time and effort and wasn't worth it to me.  Now for the fun stuff. I'll be walking you step-by-step through the process of making a competitor and what you need to provide me if you want to play. It might seem complicated and overwhelming at first if you're new to Dom3, but it's really not. We're doing this for fun. If you don't know what you're doing, just pick things that look cool. If this Arena Championship becomes popular, we'll do future seasons and then you can try to pick up on more of the game mechanics. I can't emphasize this enough: Have fun and don't take this too seriously. You're going to need to use the Dominions 3 Mod Inspector webpage for most of your competitor creation. The link is: http://dom3-mod-inspector.googlecod...=unit&showids=1 Build Points I know I've said this before but it needs to be repeated: Build Points have nothing to do with Builds Character. Nothing. If you're new to this and don't know who Builds Character is, trust me... you will. You will. Each league will have a set number of Build Points that participants can use to create their competitor(s). For the third season, we will be using 450 Build Points (or BP). So how do Build Points (BP) translate into picking competitors and their stuff? Build Points are used for: 1. Buying the "chassis" of your entrant. 2. Buying equipment for your entrant. 3. Giving gems to your entrant for casting spells during combat. Leftover BP is important. Whichever of the two arena teams has more remaining leftover BP will be the defender. In Dominions 3, the defender gets the first turn. If both teams have the same amount of BP, I'll flip a coin to determine defender. Chassis Selection Within the Dom3 Mod Inspector webpage, there is the option to view Units. It's an absolutely massive list of every unit in the game unless you turn on some filters. Anything from this massive list is going to be legal! Most of them, however, aren't going to be worthy of selection though. For a new player, the best thing to do would be to narrow the scope down a bit. I would advise looking first at Commanders and Summoned creatures. You can find these by clicking on the pull-down in the upper left corner.  So now what? The list is smaller, but still overwhelming. A competitor is going to be made up of a lot of attributes (shown in the mod inspector). Let's take a peek at one:  Unit Statistics (Attack, Strength, Protection, etc.) will be discussed in a later post, so as not to take up too much room here. In general, look for higher numbers. You can also reference the Dominions 3 wiki page for Units. Towards the bottom it talks about statistics: http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/Unit The unit entry shows protections from elements, if the chassis has any. It will show you elemental auras, automatic summons during combat, and keywords such as immortal, undead, ethereal, and so on. Many of those keywords can be found on the Dominions 3 wiki page at: http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/Ability Note: If you take something aquatic, you're going to have to take an Amulet of the Fish. I'll make it free, but it's going to take up an equipment slot. Keep that in mind. You'll also see a line for Magic Paths. Those are going to control what spells you can cast in combat. The game is going to be set up so that almost every spell is available, but you still have to meet the prerequisites to cast it. If your chassis is carrying gems, he can use one of them to increase his level by one for casting a spell. You can also get booster items to increase your casting level as well. So how do you tell how much your chassis is going to cost? 1. If the chassis is a result of a summons (such as the Wraith Lord) you can hover your mouse over the part that says "Summoned with..." It will tell you how many gems it would normally take to summon that creature. That's its cost in Build Points (unless specified in the Cost Adjustments portion of the rules). This Wraith Lord, for example, is summoned with Call Wraith Lord which costs 40 death gems (so 40 BP). Blood Summons: Units that are summoned with blood slaves are usually more "expensive" in-game than those using gems, because of the mechanisms used for generating slaves. We will be tentatively using a 4-for-1 ratio. That is subject to change on a case-by-case basis. 2. If the chassis is not the result of a summons, it gets complicated. You're going to have to ask me to come up with a cost (using similar units and the consensus of the Dominions 3 IRC channel). That chassis will be added to the Cost Adjustments portion of the rules. It will make it easier on me if you use summons, but I don't want to restrict the choices that much. Gift of Reason: Some units aren't commanders by default. If I have to turn your choice into a commander using the Gift of Reason spell (or the undead version of it), the cost will go up by 10 BP. If you have questions about what requires GoR, just ask. Random Magic Paths: If your choice comes with a randomized path, you are stuck with whatever gets randomized. There's going to be too many entrants for me to screw around trying to give you a custom chassis. If this really causes you headaches, I can look into building custom variants of chassis with randoms but I won't like it (or you). Item Selection Item Selection is easy. Go to the Items tab. Find what you want. Make sure your chassis has a slot that can be used for that item. The cost will be how many gems it requires to forge. You may take anything (including artifacts) that hasn't been added to the Banned list. Blood items will not be reduced in cost. A blood item will cost BP equal to the number of slaves required to create it. Spell Selection and Gems All spells are "free", but some spells cost gems to cast during combat. Spells that cost gems can be cast, but the gems you will need come from your Build Points allotment. Tell me how many gems and of what variety you want. Orders and Starting Location In Dominions 3, you have limited control over what your units do. You basically "script" the first five commands you want your competitor to use. The commands (and possible options) are: SPECIFIC COMMANDS Hold a Turn - no options Hold or Cast a Spell - no options Cast a Specific Spell - any spell you have available to you (including those that would require items or gem use) Hold or Fire Missile Weapon - no options Attack One Turn - no options GENERAL COMMANDS Stay Behind Troops Attack - Enemy Archers, Enemy Cavalry, Enemy Fliers, Large Enemy Monsters, Closest Enemy, Rearmost Enemies Fire - Enemy Archers, Enemy Cavalry, Enemy Fliers, Large Enemy Monsters, Closest Enemy, Rearmost Enemies Cast Spells - no options Fire and Flee - Enemy Archers, Enemy Cavalry, Enemy Fliers, Large Enemy Monsters, Closest Enemy, Rearmost Enemies Retreat - no options Note: If an order can't be followed for some reason (target is out of range, you can't cast the spell for some reason, etc.) your competitor will go "off script". I can't control that. The AI isn't the best at choosing the correct thing to do either. If you choose one of the top 5 orders listed (specific orders), you can continue to script further commands (up until the maximum of 5). If you choose one of the bottom 4 orders (general orders), you are done. That's what your competitor will try to do. Also, you will not have the option to fire a missile weapon if you don't have one. If you choose to script 5 specific orders, you will also have to choose one of the general orders to be your final command. When you send me the information, you will send me the orders in a format like this: 1. Cast a Specific Spell - Summon Earthpower 2. Cast a Specific Spell - Invulnerability 3. Cast a Specific Spell - Iron Will 4. Hold a Turn 5. Hold a Turn 6. Attack - Closest Enemy In addition, you have to choose a starting location for your commander:  To make this easier, I have come up with a grid system:  Column R (Rear) is furthest away from the enemy. Column mr (Mid-Rear) is just back of center. Column C (Center) is in the middle. Column mf (Mid-Front) is just ahead of center. Column F (Front) is at the front. You choose a column and row. If you absolutely need to get more specific, email or PM me. Is That It? It sure is. You will be giving me your 3 entrants (spending up to 450 points), your items (including gems), your orders, and your starting location. Here is the format I would like you to email me the information in: Forum Name: You know your own forum name. 1st Competitor Name: Use whatever name you want. 1st Competitor Chassis: Give me the unit name. If there are more than one, give me a Unit ID number too. 1st Competitor Cost: Give me the cost of the chassis. 1st Items, Slots and Costs: Give me a list of items, the slot and the costs. 1st Gems: Give me the types and number of gems. 1st Starting Position: Give me grid coordinates. 1st Orders: Give me the orders you'd like to use listed like I did above. 1st Cost: the total cost as you calculated it Repeat for the second and third combatants. You HAVE to enter three combatants and you have to spend at least 1 point on each. Leftover BP: Do some math for me (which I will check, so no cheating by assuming I'm lazy). Email that information to ski/at/yahoo. Make the subject "SA Dom3 Arena Championship" so I see it. Alternatively, PM me here. Whichever works best for you. Sample Entry I'll now walk you through a sample entry into a 100-BP tournament (from Season One, which used CBM so the points will be off):  Forum Name: ski 1st Competitor Name: Sample Competitor 1st Competitor Chassis: Queen of Storms (#563) 1st Competitor Cost: 40 BP 1st Items and Costs: Amulet of Antimagic (5 BP) - Misc Krupp's Bracers (10 BP) - Misc Rainbow Armor (10 BP) - Body Crystal Shield (10 BP) - Hand Spirit Helmet (10 BP) - Head 1st Gems: 10 Air Gems (10 BP) 1st Starting Position: A3 1st Orders: 1. Cast a Specific Spell - Summon Storm Power 2. Cast a Specific Spell - Living Clouds 3. Cast a Specific Spell - Thunder Strike 4. Cast a Specific Spell - Thunder Strike 5. Cast a Specific Spell - Shock Wave 6. Cast Spells 1st Cost: 95 For my spell selection, Summon Storm Power requires 1 in the Path of Air. You can tell this by looking in the upper right corner and seeing the "1" next to the cloud+lightning symbol. Living Clouds requires 4 in the Path of Air and 2 gems to cast. Thunder Strike requires 3 in Air and Shock Wave requires 2. Neither Thunder Strike nor Shock Wave require gems to cast.  Here is my competitor:  Note: I forgot the gems in that picture.  Units Unless otherwise specified, all blood summons are converted over at a 4-slaves to 1-BP ratio. So if it costs 100 slaves, it will cost 25 BP. GoR cost has been reduced to 10 (it was originally 20). The fundamental rule is: If something kills, removes from play, or charms an enemy without any save possible, it is banned. If something grants a MR-resist check, for example, it is legal. Before any team moves into the arena, they will be stripped of any gear they did not start with (freespawns, free gems, etc.). Because the defending team will sit in the province for one turn, they will be allowed to generate and keep anything that would happen in that one turn. This is one more factor to consider when using/keeping build points. Fight Rules 1. The first team that has all six combatants eliminated loses. You can be eliminated by the following: a) dying for the final time (since some items allow you to come back) b) fleeing from the battle (when you leave the map) c) becoming charmed/taken over by the enemy. 2. If you're new to Dominions 3, don't worry. This stuff is easy. You do virtually nothing while I slave away for hours every day. Also, those of you without partners... I can start partnering you up or you guys can pick and choose. We need more people. I don't want to try to run a double elimination tournament with 10-11 teams.

Eh, I'll give it a try for season three. I will need a partner, and would only be able to communicate through e-mail normally, but I'm quite responsive to that. I don't own the game, but I've got a pretty good knowledge of how it works, and played in both other seasons.
