Part of my training entailed getting the enemy to communicate.

If you are not rooting for Ivan Menjivar you are doing it wrong.

fatherdog posted:

Ivan Menjivar lived in El Salvador until he was eleven years old, right in the middle of the civil war between the guerillas and military junta. He and his family had to sleep on the floor of his mother's restaurant to avoid gunfire at night, until they were finally able to escape to Canada. Menjivar learned a new language, went to school, began training at a local gym, and eventuall became one of the latter day pioneers of MMA, having started fighting all the way back in 2001 at welterweight and lightweight. Between 2001 and 2006, he fought all over the world, in the UFC, K-1 Heros, King of the Cage, Pancrase, the IFL, and drat near every other federation extant. He put together a long and decent record, but managed to lose every time he had a chance to step up into the top ten. Finally in 2006, after injuries and financial issues, he retired, putting his fighting career behind him.

...OR SO WE THOUGHT! In 2010, Menjivar came back, tanned, rested and ready, and dropped all the way down to bantamweight. Despite a WEC loss to Noted Cool Guy Brad Pickett, the UFC folded him in when they absorbed the WEC, and he immediately rattled off a three fight winning streak against credible opposition. After a close decision loss to Mike Easton, he bounced back with his UFC career's second Submission of the Night performance in front of his hometown crowd in Montreal, and now thanks to injuries and replacements he's got a shot at perennial number one contender and one of the three defeats of his last pre-retirement year, Urijah Faber. Given the state of the bantamweight division, it's entirely possible a win could make him the number one contender (or at least, no more than one win away from being the number one contender) for the winner of Barao/Cruz. At the age of 31 and having started fighting nearly five years before either guy even started training.

Liz Carmouche on the UFC Primetime: "My fan club is The Lizbos, it's kind of a play on words between 'Lesbos' and 'Liz' "

Well, at least she explained it, because I just wasn't getting it.

I'm kind of rooting for Liz, just because she's such a huge underdog, but Ronda is so good, and charismatic, it's really her show to lose. They both seem like good people to have on the UFC.

I don't think Machida will retire Hendo, but Karate Kid will probably win. Hendo has less avenues for victory, I think. Hendo's gonna gas while Machida is still dancing around, and unless Hendo learns to time him in the first round or two, I doubt he's going to get the win. He's not going to wrestle, he's not going to out-work Machida.

If Menjivar wins we could eventually see a superfight for the unification of the bantamweight championship and the welterweight championship, skipping everything in between. Menjivar needs his GSP rematch after the horrible controversy of their first fight!

He really is a wonder. How long can he keep it up? I guess pharmaceuticals are a factor, but who can say? He can't have too many fights left in the tank but then again he's still dangerous. I wouldn't bet on him retiring even if he gets slaughtered.

I like armbars too, but a knock down, drag out type of affair would certainly lend more credibility to the new division. I feel like assigning a champion was kind of weird, but then I don't know how the UFC has handled that in the past.

The Flyweight division was the most recent, they just gathered a bunch of guys and made them fight each other in a "tournament" style progressive elimination. Mighty Mouse won, but I too wonder why they didn't do it that way for WMMA- I guess they liked Ronda enough that they just gave her the belt.

Ronda was the reigning and most popular champion of the league they were absorbing. They didn't have such a thing when they made flyweights.

Jose Aldo was awarded the featherweight championship without a fight and Dominick Cruz ostensibly "won" the UFC Bantamweight Championship in a fight with Scott Jorgensen in WEC but it was indistinguishable from a WEC Bantamweight title defense anyway.

This is good to know, at least to reply to people who go "Well, Dana really wanted to gently caress Ronda, so he gave her the belt, heh heh heh".

But then they might just move on to the "How much does Dana like Jose Aldo" argument

running out of the mirror the smells roses roses the voice that breathed o'er Eden.

Dana saw an attractive female fighter with impressive credentials, a penchant for poo poo-talking, and a track record of consistently finishing fights without smashing lady-faces. Dana, not being an idiot, realized he could sell that.

I still don't know how many fans WMMA is going to attract, but I think Ronda just might attract a LOT. Much like how Gina Carano generated way more interest than the rest of WMMA put together.

Gotta Herd On?

I think in the case of absorbing an organization where it gives you a new division it makes sense to make their champion your champion.

How much more press is this getting than it would if it were Rousey versus #4 and Liz versus #3 in a mini-tournament? A ton I think.

I'm looking forward to it, I just hope it isn't a first round armbar (and I expect to be disappointed.)

Here's one telling Meisha Tate to keep her mouth shut about GSP

Here's one from yesterday that argues women suck at fighting because they don't have enough neck strength

quote:

lol exactly.

I think the few knockouts that happen can be attributed to lack of tendon strength in women's necks or whatever.

The way their heads flail back and forth is unnatural.
