You couldn't make your pants any lower, so you made pants for each leg! SAY IT!

Click this for the intro:

Persona 4 was originally released by Atlus in 2008. Players control a teenaged boy who moves to the small Japanese town of Inaba and immediately makes some bizarre discoveries--a series of unexplainable deaths, and a world inside the television where human thoughts take lethal form. Resolving to unravel these mysteries, the boy and his new friends call on the power of Persona to do battle against the monstrous denizens of the TV world and the unknown criminal or criminals attempting to use it as a murder weapon. During downtime between battles, you hone your Persona abilities by petting cats, making models, eating beef bowls, and establishing Social Links--bonds of trust with Inaba's various residents. Gameplay is a mix of dungeon crawls with turn-based combat, and visual novels or dating sims no wait come back. Something like Harvest Moon is probably a better comparison.

In November 2012, Atlus released Persona 4: Golden, a special edition for the PlayStation Vita with bonus content and a host of much-needed technical improvements such as motor scooters, gardening, and ski trips. It is a pretty adorable game, in that cornball family-sitcom sort of way, and I am comfortable recommending it to a JRPG fan or just a person in general.

This LP will be in screenshot format. Any text in update posts that's not in italics is transcribed from the game. Anything in italics is from me, and can be safely ignored.

I'll be playing with Clear Data--basically just the game's name for New Game Plus which allows you to keep your Personas, money, social stats, and a few other things from your previous game. I haven't quite decided how much I want to cheat break make use of Clear Data's expanded options, though. The gameplay mechanics are all explained in detail as you go, so let's get right into it.

What's...where's...how do I even begin to describe your pants/underwear situation?!
You couldn't make your pants any lower, so you made pants for each leg! SAY IT!

As characters show up, get names, and have things happen to them, I'll post them here.

Sanzo Genjo
Moves to Inaba for a year while his parents are busy overseas. Immediately starts seeing visions of violent assaults and long-nosed pervs. Then poo poo really starts to get weird.

Sanzo's arcana is Fool, the card of new beginnings and faith in apparent folly. His trip to Inaba is the start of a major stage in his life. He follows Yosuke into the unknown perils of the TV world, and it turns out to be the right decision. Despite being the ostensible leader of the team, and certainly the vanguard in all their battles, Sanzo never really takes charge in the actual investigation; a Fool lives in the moment and trusts his life's course to the winds of fate.

Igor describes Sanzo's unique Persona ability as "the wild card," and "like the number zero--empty, yet holding infinite potential," all quite Foolish traits. Margaret describes the mission thrust upon him in Inaba as his "journey." The Fool's Journey is a story that uses the Major Arcana as a simple metaphor for the passage through life, or the search for enlightenment.

Yosuke Hanamura
Another recent transfer student in Sanzo's class. The Wile E. Coyote of courtship. His grief over Saki Konishi's death moves him to launch the investigation. Faces his other self in the place where Saki was killed, and obtains the Persona Jiraiya.

Yosuke's arcana is Magician, the card of action, initiative, and the masculine principle. Yosuke is driven and creative. The investigation team is originally his idea, and for better or for worse, many of Sanzo's experiences in Inaba will start with a plan of Yosuke's. It has to be said that he is also a lot like Pee Wee from Porky's, or Jim from American Pie--a somewhat nontraditional interpretation of masculinity, but there it is.

Chie Satonaka
A girl in Sanzo's class. Obsessed with chop-socky movies. If not for steak, would starve to death. Forces her way onto the investigation after Yukiko is kidnapped. Faces her other self in Yukiko's world, and obtains the Persona Tomoe.

Chie's arcana is Chariot, the card of spirit and victory. Chie is brave and headstrong. She often acts rashly, and responds vehemently to things that frighten or upset her.

Yukiko Amagi
Another classmate of Sanzo's. Best friends with Chie. Her family's inn is apparently the reason Inaba is still on the map. Targeted by the killer on April 16. Faces her other self during her rescue on April 18, and obtains the Persona Konohana Sakuya. Joins the team on April 30.

Yukiko's arcana is Priestess, the card of contemplation, passivity, and the feminine principle. Yukiko is thoughtful and introverted, and the most traditionally ladylike of the cast.

Kanji Tatsumi
A violent yob with a heart of gold. Demolishes biker gangs when they disturb his mom's peace, but really prefers quiet nights in with his tailoring & handicrafts. Targeted by the killer on May 17. Faces his other self during his rescue on May 19, and obtains the Persona Take-Mikazuchi. Joins the team on June 6.

Kanji's arcana is Emperor, the card of fathering and command. Kanji is stern and protective, especially with children much younger or smaller than himself. He holds nothing but contempt for institutions of authority, but he fights for similar ends of order and peace. His deceased father remains the central influence in his life. He looks to Sanzo for guidance and approval in much the same way a boy might look to his father, as well.

Teddie
A mysterious bear from the TV. Extorts a promise from Sanzo and Yosuke to investigate the murders, in exchange for allowing them back into their own world. Slowly learning what it means to be human. Unfortunately learning this from teenagers and their overly-sexualized Shadows. Faces his doppelganger after saving the team in Rise's world, and obtains the Persona Kintoki-Douji. Rejoins the team on July 10, with...some new accoutrements.

Teddie's arcana is Star, the card of hope, trust, and goodwill. Teddie is naive and optimistic. His faith in Sanzo and the team is absolute. He often acts as crudely and immaturely as Yosuke, although this is usually out of ignorance, simple curiosity, or imitation.

Rise Kujikawa
A famous idol, now back in her hometown on stress leave. Fed up with the way that stupid diet drink ad has completely overshadowed the rest of her career. Targeted by the killer on June 23. Faces her other self during her rescue on June 25, and obtains the Persona Himiko. Joins the team on July 10. Now working hard to match her previous best of 38.8 Senpais-per-minute in normal conversation.

Rise's arcana is Lovers, the card of companionship and dilemmas. Rise is bubbly and affectionate. She also struggles with the questions of whether her career is worth continuing, and what it really means to her.

Naoto Shirogane
A pint-sized private eye, consulting with the IPD on the recent murders. Holds deep-seated extremist beliefs that nettle every officer on the force except Dojima, namely: "Cases should be actually solved and not just pinned on whoever's convenient." Has some other, more important causes for grievance with the police, but prefers to keep them close to the vest. Holds a news interview on September 12, in an attempt to draw the real culprit out of hiding. Targeted by the killer on September 15. Obtains the Persona Sukuna-Hikona while being rescued on September 17. Joins the team on October 6.

Naoto's arcana is Fortune, the card of vision, advancement, and destiny. Naoto is brilliant and dedicated--and also somewhat fatalistic, having taken up the family legacy of detective work amid personal fears that certain accidents of birth will prevent Naoto from living up to the Shirogane name.

Ryotaro Dojima
Sanzo's uncle and guardian, and a detective with the Inaba Police Department. Single-handedly makes the force 50% more competent, and 90% harder-boiled. Something of a workaholic. Starting to heal at last from the death of his wife years ago.

Dojima's arcana is Hierophant, the card of conservatism and the establishment. Dojima is set in his ways, and has adjusted poorly to the difficult changes in his life. As father of the house and a law enforcement officer, Dojima qualifies as The Man, but I think this is still a rather poor fit for him--an issue that seems to stem from major re-writes to his character over the course of Persona 4's development.

Nanako Dojima
Sanzo's young cousin little sis. Quite possibly more mature and responsible than her father.

Nanako's arcana is Justice, the card of ethics and responsibility. Life has forced Nanako to take on many adult tasks, but she remains pure-hearted and innocent. She also inspires or illuminates ethics & responsibility in others, especially Sanzo, Dojima, and the rest of the investigation team.

Tohru Adachi
Dojima's partner in the Inaba PD. Current duties: filing paperwork, answering phones, fetching coffee (probationary).

Adachi's arcana is Jester, the Fool reversed. Like Sanzo, he is a recent arrival in Inaba from a much larger city, but his journey cannot continue--most likely because he sees the move as a significant defeat and fails to appreciate the opportunities before him.

Kou Ichijo and Daisuke Nagase
Two old knuckleheads in the sports clubs at school.

Kou and Daisuke's arcana is Strength, the card of patience and compassion. The athletes are kind and considerate, especially to Sanzo and each other, but also to others in need, as we will see.

Ai Ebihara
Theoretically, the equipment manager for Sanzo's basketball team at school. In practice, employs a unique laissez-faire management style wherein she skips out to go shopping. Aggressively normal, at least compared to the rest of the kooks Sanzo associates with.

Ai's arcana is Moon, the card of doubt and deception. She seems to be well-practiced at pulling a fast one on her teachers, but doesn't seem to have much in the way of doubt. Perhaps there's something more there. That's the nature of deception, after all.

Ayane Matsunaga
An exalted Grand Warbringer of the Martian Legions, now stranded on Earth after an attempted coup against her house. Integrated seamlessly with the feeble mortal apelings of this world until she can slay her attackers and find her own way home, as the honor of Mars demands.

Ayane's arcana is Sun, the card of joy and vitality. At the moment she seems to be somewhat wanting for those, but interpretation is up to the reader and the cards might signify having something, or gaining it. We'll have to wait and see.

Naoki Konishi
Saki's younger brother. Currently weighing how many insincere condolences and prying questions you have to hear before it's okay to start smacking people.

Naoki's arcana is Hanged Man, the card of suspension and letting go. His world has turned upside down, and he's living in a holding pattern until either everyone else stops treating him like a ticking bomb, or he stops bottling up his grief.

Hanako Ohtani
Inaba's it girl. Men hurl themselves off bridges when she spurns their advances. Granted, they're foot-bridges over the Samegawa, a total drop of two and a half feet, but still.

Ms. Kashiwagi
Sanzo's new homeroom teacher. The Yasogami faculty considered a large number of highly qualified professionals to replace Mr. Morooka, and ultimately decided to spare the students from frightening new experiences.

Eri Minami
The new stepmother of a boy who Sanzo helps babysit part-time. Still desperately hunting for the owner's manual.

Eri's arcana is Temperance, the card of balance and unification. A wall of dissociation stands between her and her new stepson--a wall that Sanzo, perhaps, can help to break down.

Sayoko Uehara
A charge nurse in the hospital ward where Sanzo cleans part-time. Outgoing and welcoming, but a bit unprofessional.

Sayoko's arcana is Devil, the card of temptation and despair. Sayoko is lustful and aggressive, but her overtures are a mask for deep feelings of loneliness and questions about her purpose.

Hisano Kuroda
An elderly woman who introduces herself to Sanzo while he's working at the hospital one night. Calls herself "Death," but seems to be a perfectly normal sweet little old lady. Refreshingly unlikely to hit on him, although she is a lonely widow, so there's still a chance.

Hisano's arcana is Death, the card of grief and inexorable change. She's a widow. Any questions?

Shu Nakajima
A boy who Sanzo tutors part-time. Formerly a pompous little bastard, but Sanzo has managed to wash some of the starch out of him.

Shu's arcana is Tower, the card of humbling and release. This arcana is mostly about events, rather than character traits--painful ones, but still ultimately positive. Shu's suspension from school devastates him emotionally, but also frees him from the insane pressure he felt to be the best and allows him room to grow.

Igor
Master of the Velvet Room, where the power of Persona-users is developed. Thinks Sanzo has some kind of destiny. Loves his job, because it's mostly about loving with people.

Margaret
Igor's assistant. Hobbies: watching paint dry, reading technical manuals, listening to EMFs.

Margaret's arcana is Empress, the card of nurturing and abundance. She holds the Persona Compendium, the source of Sanzo's power, and fulfilling her requests will grow that power by providing Sanzo with strong Personas and acclimating him to the Velvet Room's services.

Marie
Igor's other assistant. Not a native like the others, but apparently not human either. Has amnesia. Writes poems. Not actually capable of writing poems. Able to instantly charm people with her unthinking rudeness. Runaway favorite for the Velvet Room's Miss Congeniality 2011 award.

Marie's arcana is Aeon, the card of the search for understanding. Marie is alien and inquisitive. As someone with no memory, and something other than human, the question "Who am I?" is a particularly pressing one for her. She also craves even the most banal knowledge of humanity.

Some Fox
Self-appointed caretaker of Tatsuhime Shrine. At least as intelligent as the average person on the street. Now assisting the investigation with the services of his magic leaf racket.

The fox's arcana is Hermit, the card of guidance and solitude. He works to improve the lot of Inaba's citizens from a distance, with the shrine and Sanzo as his proxies.

Old Man Daidara
Runs a metalworks in the shopping district, where he crafts artwork with a rather martial bent. Quite gracious about all the gore and ink stains on everything Sanzo sells him.

Old Lady Shiroku
Runs a pharmacy by day, and a bar by night. When does she sleep? NEVER.

Taro Namatame
A former council secretary. Between all the fallout from ONGOING SCANDAL REPORT 2011: MAYUMIGATE and the death of his lover, this poor sap's life and times have definitely taken a turn for the poo poo.

Mayumi Yamano
A local TV announcer, and the focus of ONGOING SCANDAL REPORT 2011: MAYUMIGATE. Found dead from unknown causes on the afternoon of April 12.

Saki Konishi
The object of Yosuke's clumsy affection. Discoverer of Mayumi Yamano's body. Found dead from unknown causes on the morning of April 15, the same way as Mayumi.

Mr. Morooka
Sanzo's former homeroom teacher. Last known size of his poo poo list: eighty gigabytes. Found dead from occipital blunt trauma on July 10. His candle burned out long before his legend ever did.

Mitsuo Kubo
A staunch advocate of Men's Rights. Claims responsibility for the murders of Mayumi Yamano, Saki Konishi, and Kinshiro Morooka. Appears on the Midnight Channel on July 26, taunting viewers to try and catch him. Apprehended by the team and turned over to IPD custody on July 29.

As promised, here is a fight with Shadow Yosuke from the original Persona 4.

The fight is basically identical, it's just a tutorial on Guarding. Next time is when we'll see things get a bit different.

Also an opportunity for those who have only played The Golden to hear Teddie's original voice acting.

Feinne posted:

So here's our second boss in the original, Shadow Chie.

This is one of the two most changed bosses overall. The original version literally was just melee attacks, telegraphed Mazio, and a Green Wall after you knock her down the first time. Bottomless Envy is completely new and actually makes her a bit dangerous because it significantly ups her ability to damage the party while also giving her the ability to dizzy people. Still, it's just a matter of paying attention to the order she does things and knowing when to Guard. They also added a bunch of new dialog I think, she didn't really say much in the old one.

Feinne posted:

So, here's the video of the fight. One thing to keep in mind is I'm basically at the lowest possible level to have even a chance to beat her.

So as I've hinted, this fight is radically different in the original game in a LOT of ways. First off the obvious: She's not weak to anything. The only way to down her is with a critical hit in the original. Her early game is largely similar, she will use a mix of Agi and physical attacks. Except, another big difference, she doesn't use what I'd characterize as 'weak' attacks. She instead loving wrecks people with Double Fangs and Assault Dive for most of their health most of the time (she can just Attack sometimes but it's rare). After a turn or two, she'll summon the Charming Prince, as we saw there. So, a thing about the Charming Prince in Golden that didn't get shown off is that he runs off when he gets to about half. In the original he doesn't do that. You have to fully kill him to be rid of him, and he's the one who fears people to combo with Yukiko for the Shivering Rondo. He also casts Diarama on her, which is no fun at all. He's actually weak to Ice and can be Dizzied, but When her health gets low, she never switches to Fear. Instead, ~50% marks her first use of Burn to Ashes. She then starts casting it every few turns or so, completely randomly and unpredictably. She does normal Attacks even less, throwing around a mix of Agi, Assault Dive, Double Fangs, and Burn to Ashes from this point until you or her are dead. When she knocks someone down, she will either move on to another, cast Matarunda, or cast White Wall on the Prince. And she will knock people down unless you're super cautious with Chie because she LOVES making you pay for not having her Guarded by using a fire attack on Chie.

There are a few strategies, and all of them suck for different reasons. My favorite (though it's not the one I used in that video) I'd term as the Valkyrie strategy. It uses, naturally, the persona Valkyrie, because she's pretty high level and gets Media. The downsides are, of course that Valkyrie doesn't have any special defenses against physical and fire attacks. Still, this strat is pretty reliable because you just in general have pretty solid defenses. The one I use in the video is to use Senri, an Empress persona that is immune to fire. This strat is very, very risky though, because Senri has basically the worst possible defenses against physical attacks you can have without being actually weak to physical. So, if she targets the MC with a double fangs and you're not at high health you're probably dead, game over. Still, it's a strong strat because it means Burn to Ashes doesn't hurt the MC, and it's a huge source of damage in the fight. There are strats that use Slime and Red Wall, but I don't care for those because Red Wall is super SP intensive and a pain in the rear end to keep up.

The best thing you can do to improve your chances is to be level 15 bare minimum and go into the fight fresh at full SP. It's beatable below that and it's beatable without poo poo (I mean I do it in that video) but it's not the sort of thing you do if you're not very familiar with the game. Definitely don't do it at level 13 on a fresh file like I do if you haven't played the game as many times as I have (you probably haven't).

Also count how many times I almost wipe later on in that video. I'm not entirely sure I expected to be able to succeed in that state, I think I just gave it a whirl on the principle that if I pulled it off I saved myself a day of dungeoning.

Next time I'll be back with either a relatively relaxing boss fight or some absolutely ridiculous bullshit depending on whether he does a certain thing before the next major boss.

One of these things is not like the others...

Feinne posted:

So here we go, Shadow Kanji in original P4. The major change is that the Nice and Tough Guys aren't weak to anything, and realistically you can't kill the Tough Guy at all in any reasonable time frame. Shadow Kanji in both versions has that Forbidden Murmur, as well as a similar attack that Enrages the girls. He mainly attacks with Swift Strike, though he will Power Charge sometimes as well. He starts using Fanatical Spark once his health gets down, and he'll use debuffs when he gets a One More off of Yosuke. Physical attacks are your best bet against the Nice Guy and Kanji himself. The difficulty is pretty similar between the two versions, that is to say he's easy.

Feinne posted:

I'll put up videos of the fights with Shadow Rise and Shadow Teddie later, they're not really changed in any meaningful way though so there's not much for me to say.

Obviously you can't win or really lose against Rise. Teddie is super easy, just watch out for his Mabufula.

Shadow Rise

What's...where's...how do I even begin to describe your pants/underwear situation?!
You couldn't make your pants any lower, so you made pants for each leg! SAY IT!

It starts with a dream.

A car, traveling through impenetrable fog...

...with uncommon passengers.

Welcome to the Velvet Room.

-Aria of the Soul-

My name is Igor...I am delighted to make your acquaintance. This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter...It is a room that only those who are bound by a "contract" may enter...It may be that such a fate awaits you in the near future. Now then...Why don't you introduce yourself...?

I am pretty bad at naming characters. Usually I just trawl Wikipedia or Google Translate for something that vaguely fits their abilities, role, or setting.

This'll do. Even if it's sort of backwards.

Now, let's take a look into your future, shall we? Do you believe in fortune telling? Each reading is done with the same cards, yet the result is always different...*chuckle* Life itself follows the same principles, does it not?

Hm...The Tower in the upright position represents the immediate future. It seems a terrible catastrophe is imminent. The card indicating the future beyond that is...

The Moon, in the upright position. This card represents "hesitation" and "mystery"...Very interesting indeed. It seems you will encounter a misfortune at your destination, and a great mystery will be imposed upon you. In the coming days, you will enter into a contract of some sort, after which you will return here. The coming year is a turning point in your destiny...If the mystery goes unsolved, your future may be forever lost. My duty is to provide assistance to our guests to ensure that does not happen. Ah! I have neglected to introduce my assistant to you. This is Margaret. She is a resident of this place, like myself.

Oh okay.
We shall attend to the details another time. Until then, farewell...

The next day, Sanzo heads for Inaba.

Elsewhere, a struggle...

A woman cries out.

A burst of...static?

And two strangely familiar faces.

The last train pulls into Yasoinaba Station.

0. And The Fool begins his journey.

-New Days-

Welcome to Inaba. I'm Ryotaro Dojima. I'll be looking after you. Let's see...I'm your mother's younger brother...and that about sums it up.

I'll say. You've really grown. I still remember when you were in diapers...This here's my daughter. Come on, Nanako, introduce yourself to your cousin.

Nanako blushes, and hides behind her father.

She smacks him on the leg.

Well then...Let's get going. My car's over there.

Can you go to the bathroom by yourself?
Uh-huh.
Attendant: It's in the back, to your left. You know which way's left? The side you don't hold your chopsticks in.
I know...Geez...
Attendant: Are you taking a trip?
No, we just went to pick him up. He just moved here from the big city.
Attendant: The city, huh?
Fill up my car while you're at it. Regular's fine.
Attendant: Right away, sir!
Good a time as any for a smoke...

Attendant: Does it surprise a city boy to see how little there is out here? There's so little to do, I'm sure you'll get bored fast. You'll either be hanging out with your friends or doing part-time jobs. Speaking of which, we're actually looking for part-time help right now. Give it some though, why don't you? We don't mind if you're a student. Oh, I should get back to work.

...Are you okay? Did you get carsick? You don't look too good...

That's understandable. It must have been a long trip for you. Why not take a little walk, get some fresh air? Just let me know when you're ready to go.

The shopping district is near the house, so you should get to know where all the stores are.

-Heartbeat, Heartbreak-

At this point, you're free to walk down the street and throw up do a little window shopping.

This section of the shopping district features Yomenaido Books...

Daidara's Metalworks...

Marukyu Tofu...

...and Shiroku Store. More on them later.

That weirdo from the train station is hanging around too for some reason.

What were you doing at the station?
The station...? Oh, that one time...Nothing. I just went...I don't have anywhere to go.
> The girl falls silent...

-New Days-

> You arrived at the Dojima residence. For the next year, this place will be your home...

So...Your mom and dad are busy as always...They're working overseas, was it? I know it's only for a year, but getting stuck in a place like this because of your parents...It's rough being a kid. Well, it's just me and Nanako here, so it'll be nice having someone like you around. So long as you're here, you're part of the family, so make yourself at home.
Thank you for your kindness.
C'mon, there's no need to be so formal. Look, you're making Nanako all tense. Well, anyway...Let's eat.

...Dojima speaking.

All right, I'm on my way.
Looks like I made the right choice to skip the booze...
Sorry, but I gotta go take care of some business. Go ahead and eat without me. I don't know how late I'll be. Nanako, you help him out, okay?
...Okay.

I already brought it in!
All right...Well, I'm off.

...Let's eat.
> You find yourself alone with Nanako...You might want to strike up a conversation...
What does your dad do?
He...investigates stuff. Like crime scenes. My dad's a detective.
TV Announcer: And now for the local news.

Announcer: In response, Eye Television has decided to cancel all of announcer Mayumi Yamano's televised appearances.

...This is boring.

"Hmhmhm" is above even the singular "Heh" on the sinister anime laughter scale. Better cut that thing down.

Let's keep going.

Last time, Sanzo was beset with omens of torment and disaster.

Today: the first day of school.

> It's almost time to get up...You feel like you had a nightmare. What could it have been about...? You're starting school today. You should head to the living room for now...
I hope you like ellipses, by the way.........

-New Days-

I can toast bread...and cook sunny-side up eggs in the morning. Dad can't cook, so I buy dinner. You're starting school today, right?
My school's on the way, so...Let's go together.

> School Zone, Samegawa flood plain...

> School Zone, Intersection in front of the school...

WHAM.

> That looked painful...You should leave him be...

> What kind of student life awaits you here...?

Student's friend: Yeah, it's King Moron alright...We get to enjoy his long-rear end sermons every day for a whole year...
Female student: Hey you guys, I heard there's going to be a transfer student from the city in this class.
Sitting student: Huh? Really? A guy or a girl?

...Huh? You look dead today.
Yeah, um...I don't wanna talk about it...
What's with him?

I'm Kinshiro Morooka, your homeroom teacher from today forward! First things first! Just 'cause it's spring doesn't mean you can swoon over each other like love-struck baboons. Long as I'm around, you students are going to be pure as the driven snow! Now I hate wasting my time, but I'd better introduce this transfer student. This sad sack's been thrown from the big city out to the middle of nowhere like yesterday's garbage. And he's just as much of a loser here as he was there, so you girls better not get any ideas about hitting on him! Tell 'em your name, kid, and make it quick.
...You calling me a loser?

Now listen up! This town is miles away from your big city of perverts and assholes, in more ways than one. You better not even think of getting involved with the girls here, let alone abusing them! But what do I know...it's not like the old days. Even here, kids grow up so drat fast. Every time I turn my back, you're fooling around on those drat phones, checking your life-journals and your my-places...

> Mr. Morooka goes on and on...

Huh? Yeah, sure. Ya hear that? Your seat's over there. So hurry up and siddown already!

Rotten luck for you to get stuck in this class...Well, we just have to hang in there for a year.

> You can hear people around you talking about you...

Male student: Sucks to be the transfer student, ending up in King Moron's class on the first morning here...
Whiny student: Yeah, he won't think twice about suspending you if you get on his bad side. Then again, we're all in the same boat...

> Your life at this new school has begun. Will you be able to fit in here...?

School intercom: Attention, all teachers. Please report immediately to the Faculty Office for a brief staff meeting. All students must return to their classrooms and are not to leave the school until further notice.

Brown-haired girl: He's seriously getting on my nerves...

Suddenly, sirens ring out.

Excited student: Ugh, I can't see a drat thing. Frickin' fog...
Rumor-loving student: Yeah, like every time it rains lately, it gets all foggy.
Knowledgeable student: Hey, did you hear? I hear that paparazzi's looking all over for that announcer.
Rumor-loving student: Oh yeah. You mean Mayumi Yamano, right? I heard some guys spotted her at the shopping district.
Knowledgeable student: Actually, I heard that...
Rumor-loving student: Are you serious!?

Rumor-loving student: Is it true that announcer's staying at your family's inn?
I can't discuss such things.
Rumor-loving student: Y-Yeah, I guess not.

There's no telling.
I shoulda left before the announcement came on...
By the way, didja try what I told you the other day? You know...That thing about rainy nights...
Oh...No, not yet. Sorry.
Ahhh, that's okay. It's just, I heard a guy in the class next door yell something like, "My soulmate is Yamano, the announcer!"

School intercom: There has been an incident inside the school district. Police officers have been dispatched around the School Zone. Please stay calm and contact your parents or guardians as soon as possible, and quickly leave the school grounds. Do not disturb the police officers. Head directly home.
But Sanzo's guardian IS a police officer. Will he be stuck here forever?
Excited student: "Incident"?!
Girl's friend: What, something actually happened?
Brown-haired girl: C'mon, let's go take a look!

Why don't you come with us? Oh, nearly forgot! I'm Chie Satonaka. You know I sit next to you, right?
Of course.
Well, nice to meet you! This is Yukiko Amagi.
Oh, nice to meet you. I'm sorry that this is so sudden...
C'mon, don't apologize like that. It makes me look like I got no upbringing. I just wanted to ask some stuff. Really, that's all.

This was really awesome. Like, the way they moved was just amazing to see...

See ya! Thanks!

WHAM.

Argh!!

My "Trial of the Dragon"...!
I think mine's cracked too...C-Critical hit to the nads...
A-Are you all right?
Oh, Yukiko-san...Are you worried about me...?
He's fine, Yukiko. Let's ditch him and go home.

>He looks like he's in a lot of pain...You should leave him be...

What...? Wh-Who are you?
Onlooking student: What's up with him? What school's he from?
Spectacled student: Never mind that, he's going for Yukiko-san? Man, you'd think he'd at least wait until she's alone to make his move...
Onlooking student: I bet you a can of TaP he gets knocked out.
Spectacled student: No bet. Haven't you heard how difficult the Amagi Challenge is?
Um, s-so...Are you coming or not?
I-I'm not going...
...Fine!
Not enough negs, bro.
Wh-What did he want from me...?
What did he want...? Obviously, he was asking you out on a date.
Huh? Really...?
You really had no clue? Sheesh...But then again, that was way over the top. It was creepy how he called you Yuki all of a sudden.

Man, you're cruel...You got me the same way last year.
I don't recall doing that.
Whoa, you serious? So then, you wanna hang out sometime?!
...I'd rather not.
That'll teach me to get my hopes up...
Anyways, you two better not pick on the transfer student too much.
We're just curious, is all!!
U-Um, I'm sorry for dragging you into this...
C'mon, let's go. Everyone's staring.

That's what makes it nice, but there is nothing much we can show to people from outside. Though, there is something from Mt. Yasogami...I think our dyed clothes or pottery or something is kinda famous. Oh wait, and there's the Amagi Inn! Yukiko's family runs it. It's the pride of Inaba!
Huh? It's...just an old inn.
No way, it's been in all sorts of magazines as a hidden treasure. It's a great inn! It's been going for generations, and Yukiko here is going to take over someday. Their inn actually attracts a lot of visitors to Inaba. It pretty much keeps this town going.
...I don't think that's entirely true.
So, tell me. You think Yukiko's cute, huh?
I think so, yeah.
I knew it!
Come on...Don't start this again...
She's really popular at school, but she's never had a boyfriend. Kinda weird, huh?
C-Come on, stop it. Y-You shouldn't believe that, okay? It's not true that I'm popular or that I've never had a boyfriend! Wait, n-no! What I meant to say was, I don't need a boyfriend! Geez...Chie!
Hahaha! Sorry, I'm sorry. But this is our chance to talk to someone from the big city, and you barely said a word! Hey, what's that?

-Who's There?-

Spectator housewife: Wow. Who could imagine that hanging from an antenna?
Shopping housewife: I wanted to see it too.
Spectator housewife: Uh, you got here too late...The police and fire department took it down just a moment ago.
Shopping housewife: Well, I think it's terrifying. I can't believe a dead body showed up around here...
Wait...What did she just say? A dead body!?

We're just passing by.
Huh...I should have figured that'd happen.
That drat principal. We told him not to let them through here...
...You know this guy?
I'm Detective Dojima, his guardian. Uhh...Well, how should I say this...I hope you get along with him. But you three really ought to stop wandering around and head straight home.

I-I'm sorry...Nngh...
*sigh* Go wash your face. We're gonna go around and gather information!
Was this what that announcement was about...?
What do they mean...it was hanging from the antenna...?
Hey, Yukiko...? Why don't we go to Junes some other time?
Good idea...
Alright then, we're taking off. Starting tomorrow, neighbor, let's do our best!

> The two of them left. You decide to head away from the crime scene...

-Heartbeat, Heartbreak-

After the girls leave, the Inaba map pops up for the first time. You're free to wander the town, but there's nothing to do today except get scolded by policemen.

Announcer: Our top story this evening concerns a bizarre case in a quiet suburb. Around noon today, a woman was found dead near the Samegawa River in Inaba.

> The School Zone is being shown on TV. Could this be the incident you heard about...?

Announcer: The initial results of the Inaba Police Department's investigation have revealed...

......
It'll be all right.
...I know. That's his job, so this stuff happens.
Announcer: The body was found hanging from a large television antenna atop a local resident's roof. Authorities are uncertain as to why the body was in such a state. With the cause of death also uncertain, police continue to investigate whether the death is an accident or a homicide. A thick fog common to the area has slowed their progress, and plans to fully canvass the area are delayed until tomorrow.

> It seems that the local TV station's announcer was found dead near the Yasogami High School campus...The announcer, Mayumi Yamano...Her affair with a local councilman's secretary had been on the news just the other day.

They found her on the roof? That's scary...
Oh, it's Junes!
Commercial: At Junes, every day is Customer Appreciation Day. Come see for yourself, and get in touch with our products! Every day's great at your Junes!

> Nanako is looking at you expectantly...

Your Junes!
You memorized it already? I'm the best one in my class!

> Nanako sings the song to herself over and over again. It seems that she's forgotten all about the scary story.

Nothing else to do but go to bed. Apart from the disturbing news, it's another slow, ordinary day.

NEXT TIME: Things start getting weird.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy P4G. I've played through the original more times than I care to admit, after Feinne's LP hooked me. Unfortunately, the cost of $300 for a Vita and this game is just too much, despite the praise I've heard about the story and mechanic changes.

This LP is looking good so far, although there's something lost when you don't hear the voice work (there's a LOT of voice acting in this game, and it's superb).

Some of the new content in this version is really cool, but at the same time most of it focuses way too strongly on ~wacky anime hijinks~ and the game in general seems to wanna focus way less on the murder case stuff. New intro is a great example of what I mean.

The screenshots are good quality for a handheld game that can't be emulated, how are you taking them?

The Vita does screenshots all on its own! You just hit Pause+Start together. The power cable is USB, too, so you can plug it right in and copy them over.

Just when I myself started this game, wonderful.
Atlus really know how to port games, first P3P and now this one, all the little and not so little changes from the original game are quite welcome.
They made a far more ergonomic experience, the game is easier as a result but drat if it isn't great to make Izanagi a god mode persona.

Gameplay wise it's interesting how they've rebalanced the boss difficulty. I'm not finished so I don't know what they did with some of the later bosses but they really changed the second and third significantly.

I guess at some point I should re-upload the videos for my P4 LP that got lost when Viddler went all nazi, this might be a good excuse to make myself do that tedious and painful work.

You did wrong, Jack,
rest your soul.

They also shuffled the weaknesses of a bunch of random enemies for some reason. Which is really, really irritating if you started playing on a harder difficulty and end up wiped because the thing you're fighting against no longer has the same weakness it had every time you played the original.

EDIT: As far as I can tell, the later bosses are mostly untouched. It's basically just the early ones that got reworked.

Say, did you hear about the incident from yesterday? They found that announcer lady hanging from an antenna!
You think it was some kinda warning? There's no way something that weird could've been an accident.
You might be right.
Dangling a dead body over a roof like that...That's just messed up.
Then again, it's pretty messed up to kill someone in the first place.
Oh crap, we're late!
You wanna ride? It's a little squeaky, but it should be fine.

Not yet.
The local "crazy fog deaths" factor is a bit steep.
Yeah, well, you just got here.
There isn't much to do here compared to the big city, but there is that certain...something you can't get anywhere else. The air's clean, the food's great...Oh, you know about the local delicacy?
It's grilled steak, man! Like that's anything special, huh? I know a place where you can get it cheap. Wanna come? You helped me out this morning, so it's on me.

My "Trial of the Dragon."
Urgh...You always come around when I'm talking about food...

Wow, Yukiko-san! You started training to take over the family business?

Well, I should be on my way.
Oh well. We should get going too.

-Junes Theme-

> Junes, Food court...

Yeah, well, once you hopped on the freeloader train, I had to change my plans.
Still, that's no reason to take us to your place.
Dude, this isn't my place or anything. Oh, right, I haven't told you yet, huh? I moved here from another city about six months back. This location just opened up, and my dad was assigned to manage it. So our entire family came out here. Here, this is to welcome you to town.
Satonaka, yours is on me too.
Yeah, I know.

> The conversation became animated over small talk...

It's only been half a year since this place opened up, but I haven't been to the local shopping district much since.
A lot of stores there started closing, and...Oh, uh...
...You can't blame it all on Junes, can you? Hey...It's Saki-senpai! Sorry, be right back.
Is she Yosuke's girlfriend?
Haha, he wishes.
That's Saki Konishi. Her family runs a liquor store in the shopping district...I think she's working here part-time, though.

What's up, Hana-chan? Boosting the family business by bringing your friends here?
Madam, you wound me!
Kidding aside...You look down. Did something happen?
...It's nothing. I'm just a little tired.
Hey, if you need to talk, I'm always willing to listen. I...
*chuckle* I'm okay. Thanks, though.
*sigh* Why'd I leave school early yesterday...?
Hey...Is he the kid who transferred here?

It must be nice to have someone else from the big city to talk to, huh? I don't see Hana-chan hanging out with the other guys much.
Uh--Not necessarily...
He doesn't have too many friends, so I hope you get along good. Hana-chan's a good guy, but he can get nosy sometimes. You gotta tell him right to his face when he starts to annoy you.
Nah, he's a great guy.
Ahaha, I know...I'm just kidding.
C-C'mon, Senpai. There's no need to worry about something like that.
Well, my break's just about over. Back to work I go...Laters!
Oh, uh, Senpai...!

Persona 4 will eventually wring more use out of the word "Senpai" than the definite article. I hope you like it as much as you like ellipses.

She has a younger brother, and she treats me pretty much the same way...
Ohhh, you don't want her treating you like a brother, huh? Haha, I get it...So that's how it is...
The daughter of a local family-run liquor store and the scion of the invading chain...Hoho, the flame of forbidden love!
What--!? Dude, it's not like that.
Oh reaaaally...Well, I know just the thing to cheer up that lovesick heart.
You ever hear of the Midnight Channel? You're supposed to look into a TV that's switched off, alone, exactly at midnight on a rainy night. While you're staring at your own image, another person will appear on the screen...And they say that person's your soulmate.
What? For a second, I thought you were actually going to say something useful...How can you get all excited over such a childish urban legend like that?
Childish, huh? You don't believe it, do you!?
Of course I don't!
Well, it's raining tonight! Let's all try it out--then you'll see!
Try it out...? Wait, you haven't even tried it yourself!?
Wow, I'm trying to remember the last time I heard something this stupid...
All that aside...you know that "incident" yesterday? You guys think it was murder?
Ooh, what if the culprit behind it was still lurking around...? Heehee...
Sheesh, you shouldn't joke about stuff like that. Now who's the childish one...? All I'm saying is, you guys better try it out tonight.

> You heard the rumor about the Midnight Channel, where one can see one's soulmate on a rainy night. Maybe you should try it out tonight...

> Another dinner alone with Nanako...

Don't worry.
...Yeah.
Oh! He's home!

I'm back. Did anything happen while I was out?
No. You're late again...
I'm sorry...Been busy at work. Can you put the news on for me?

Announcer: Announcer Mayumi Yamano's dead body was found hanging above a house in this isolated rural town. It is confirmed that Ms. Yamano had been involved in an affair with Taro Namatame, husband of enka singer Misuzu Hiiragi.

> It's a follow-up report about the incident yesterday...When Ms. Yamano, the TV announcer, was alive, she was having an affair with a councilman's secretary...The man's wife seems to be Misuzu Hiiragi, an enka singer...Could the incident be tied to their lovers' quarrel...?

Just in case anyone missed it:

Mayumi Yamano is dead.
She was a TV announcer.
And was having an affair.
With Taro Namatame.
A councilman's secretary.
Behind the back of Misuzu Hiiragi.
Namatame's wife.
An enka singer.

Announcer: The police plan to investigate this relationship and question any personnel involved with them. In addition, we now bring you an exclusive interview with the student who found Ms. Yamano's body.
*sigh* An interview with the kid...? Where the hell did they find her?

Female student: U-Umm...

> The female student's face and voice are indistinct. But you feel like you've seen her before somewhere...

Reporter: Don't you think it's scary that someone was killed on a foggy day?
Female student: Huh...? She was killed?
Reporter: Oh, errr...So did you see anyone suspicious around here?
Female student: No, not really...
Reporter: We heard that you found it when you left school early. Did you have some personal business to take care of?
Female student: Huh? That's...

> The reporter's enthusiasm seems to be perplexing the girl. Looking closely...she reminds you of Saki Konishi, Yosuke's senpai...

Announcer: --a tragedy that occurred near the local shopping district. Many storeowners are raising concerns about losing customers as a result...
Hmph. If they lose more customers, it'll be because you're raising such a stink about it...
Commentator: It really is a bizarre case, isn't it? I mean, hanging someone upside down from an antenna...I'd have to say it's a warning or a sign from the culprit.
Announcer: Yes, but so far, no one has come forward to take credit for the crime.
Loads of prank calls, though...
Commentator: So the cause of death is still unknown? And they don't have a single suspect yet? Taxpayers' funds are going to a police force who can't even tell if this is an accident or a homicide?
......
Announcer: We'll be right back after these messages.

The clock strikes twelve.

Nothing happens.

Sanzo turns away...and the television comes to life.

Images, too brief to discern.

Who is that? Is something...throwing her around the room?

Then suddenly...

I...am thou...

Thou art I...

Thou art the one who opens the door...

Sanzo tears free from whatever has hold of him...

And smashes his head right on the work table.

Did I wake you up?
I heard a really loud noise.
Well, good night.

Oooh, I've been so curious about P4G since I've heard it improves so much from vanilla P4! Glad to see an LP of this has popped up! Although Narukami Genjo's portraits are a little weird-looking to me because they're from Kaneko's concept art as opposed to an in-game portrait. I can send you Narukami's Persona 4 Arena portraits if you'd like, if only to make things a little more consistent.
Soejima did the artwork for the lead characters and their Personas, not Kaneko.

Relax. Where you're going, there is no weapon triangle.

I know that, but the official artwork looks like Kaneko's porcelain-doll style.

What.
Did you say.
To that horse.

There are a lot of changes to the Golden, aesthetic and otherwise, that make me refuse to play it so I'm glad there's this now so I can see the stuff that actually sounded kind of interesting.

Edit: Also gently caress Narukami, Souji Seta forever

What's...where's...how do I even begin to describe your pants/underwear situation?!
You couldn't make your pants any lower, so you made pants for each leg! SAY IT!

I never played the original. What changes didn't you like?

I am a weird pedant about aesthetics, so there's things like how the font is different (it's most noticeable on the map screen,) the entire game looks slightly brighter (this is probably a facet of being on different systems,) and most notably the text box just feels intrusively large comparatively since the screen has a lot less vertical real estate to go around. I also am not fond of Erin Fitzgerald's performance as Chie, or the fact that I would have to hang out with this new chick with the haphazard design that forces herself into the group and wider plot in order to access the most significant new content.

There's also some other gameplay additions that I felt were rather unnecessary and in the case of the party's third Personae, looked really dumb. Especially Kanji, what is with those giant hands?

Still, if I had a choice I'd take Golden over vanilla, if only because of the gameplay updates (especially the ability to directly choose what abilities the personas you fuse inherit). The updated character movesets also help to make a certain late-game person much more viable.

I'm a very lonely man, doing what I can.

I loved Persona 4, but didn't want to buy a Vita for just one game. So, I'm looking forwards to more from this LP. It's looking good so far.

I also prefer vanilla P4's Chie over the new voice actress. That is, if it is the same for P4A. The change wasn't exactly bad, but I think the original is just better.

I'm so glad someone's LPing this, now I don't have to buy a vita!

I'm with you on that, apparently she tones down the Sarah Palin-ness of it later on but it's still hard to get used to. Shame since she was my favourite character.

I mean, who dreams about taking a shit with another guy?

You all are nuts. The new voice actress is a much better choice--her delivery is funnier, its more spirited, she emotes more clearly and brings the character far more energy and enthusiasm than she had before.

I will say that I enjoyed how very natural the first Chie VA sounded in the role, and it wasn't a bad performance in and of itself, but the new lady just clearly nails the intended mood for the character far and beyond anything else.

I dunno, I just felt in the original she was a lot more down to earth as opposed to being a hillbilly in the new one.

You have offended STRINGIE! You must be punished!

I am going to spend this entire thread waiting for at least one update where (minor new content stuff)your entire party runs around fighting shadows dressed as sentai characters.

Bought a Vita just for this game. Atlus did the impossible and made my personal #1 game even better.

Gonna have to agree with RentCavalier on Chie. New Chie is way better then old Chie. Her old voice actor nailed a couple of lines better then New Chie does, but the overall performance is not nearly as solid as new Chie.

I've never heard Tracey Rooney and won't say anything against her, but I think Erin Fitzgerald is one of the best voices in the whole game. That said, there are a few times where she's maybe a little closer to Hiimdaisy's Chie than I'd like.

I have two questions for everyone at this point--

Most of Clear Data's new options deviate from a new game in the same way: they make you invincible. I'm still not sure how much this would affect my screenshots for the LP. How much cheating are you all cool with, on a scale of zero to Yoshitsune?

Also, for no particular reason, I'd like people to pick their favorite word from this list and post it in bold:

Gentlemen, welcome to SA.

Now vote this thread 5, or pay the price of insubordination!

I liked the original VA for Chie () except for one thing: her battle quotes. Her battlecry was hilariously weak and it never failed to make me cringe. Never gotten around to checking out the replacement though. She really seems to divide people.

Edit: Also Gecko. Geckos are cool
