![]() I actually don't have anything to say about this game which I won't cover in the first video, that's great because nobody reads these opening paragraphs anyway! Actually, there is not much to say in any case. It's Mega Man. For the original Game Boy. Still 8-bit, less colours, and not a bad game! Pretty rough around the edges still, but a commendable effort. I plan, as always, on doing it as much justice as I can and as it deserves. Videos ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Videos on Baldurdash: 60 fps and source download! Extra links and other stuff First, let me thank Admiral H. Curtiss for sorting out the audio issues I had. Bean has been very helpful to me from the very start of my LPing career, so I definitely want to give him a big shout-out here. He is the LPer who I would call the biggest inspiration for my playstyle, and most of his earlier runs being subtitled doesn't really change how his intelligent usage of special weapons and clean showing off of stages helped me realize what I wanted to do myself. This is a playlist for his LP of the entire Game Boy Mega Man series - it's very good stuff, and I very much recommend checking it out if you get tired of my nattering. Obviously only watch what you want out of it. While we're at other people doing LPs, I need to give a shout-out to VPrisoner who also covered the series here on the archive. Freezing Inferno was so kind to record a DLC stage for Mega Man 10 which recreates this game's final level quite faithfully using the new resources: Mega Man 10: Special Stage 1 If you want even less commentary and even more competence, this is the game's Speedrun on SDA. I was stoked when I got this game (I was 7? 8?) but it's pretty tough. It took me years to beat it without a Game Genie.

Nicely done, even with deaths it's a respectable showing. Kind of unusual how it's contains Mega Man 1 masters, Mega Man 1 remixes for stage themes, yet the boss theme is a very rough Mega Man 2 remix. I can kind of see why they did this, but it still seems odd.

Ha, and someone will help you. Thanks a lot to Admiral H. Curtiss who helped me fix the audio issues (Normalize in Audacity did the trick, for anyone curious). This should sound far better. EDIT: Also yeah, anyone filing complaints against this game's difficulty (especially at the end) is way justified, it's a complete bitch. Oh hey, I've actually played this one. I got it against my better judgement because it popped up on the 3DS VC, and it was during a spell there wasn't much else coming out, so I figured I might as well go through with it. There was a substantial amount of savestate abuse and cursing by the end, but I feel like I can now properly appreciate the NES Megaman games after playing this.

Nice, I remember this game being my companion on many road trips as a kid. I didn't know that its development was outsourced, and it does kinda make sense, putting the level design of the two series against each other. Looking forward to seeing more, as I'm sure I've forgotten most of the game by now.

I don't know why but I was always much better at this and the Gameboy version of Megaman 2 than the actual console games that I've never beaten. Also, it's nice to see that Youtube rates you along with LP superstar Cornshaq due to this LP. Cart Cam fucked around with this message at Feb 25, 2013 around 04:47 |

Elecman's stage was the bane of my childhood gameboy playing. For some reason those block puzzles just wrecked me. I don't remember the bosses being that hard in comparison.

Looking forward to the rest of this Let's Play!! Man, the Game Boy Mega Man games used to kick my rear end whenever I played them. This (and ESPECIALLY the second one, which for some reason I just had major trouble with) is no exception. It seems you have difficulty in the same areas that I had, which makes me feel better about my difficulties whenever I played. I remember the first time I played this one it shocked the hell out of me that Cut Man was so much harder to defeat!!

I didn't get the chance to play that one until a few years ago, but I was surprised in that it wasn't too lousy. Even the music was pretty good for the Game Boy!!

Elecman's stage was the first one I always beat, because I could usually beat Elecman in a damage race and thus begin the cycle of boss weaknesses. Also, I had problems with enemies in Megaman games, so a stage with almost no enemies, and none that were particularly threatening, was naturally going to be the easiest to get through.

Despite playing for hours I could never beat Dustman, and when I used a password I discovered Punk was an rear end in a top hat boss who did 3-shot kills and was impossible for kid me to avoid.

Great to see another Simply Simon LP, this is already shaping up to be as entertaining as the rest. Is this game just the four robot masters plus the Wily stuff, or is there more? Seems a bit short, but I suppose the cartridge space was pretty limited.

I always actually really liked this stage. The gimmicks of the icicles and the melting ice blocks both feel very clever to me, and completely in spirit with Mega Man style mechanics. I recall that the melting ice blocks appear (in a mildly different shape) rarely in Mega Man: Powered Up! for the PSP, but do they reappear in any other installments? I don't think they do.

"Different strokes for different folks" as they say, because man, watching Mega Man slide uncontrollably all over the stage really reminds me that putting sliding physics into an early Game Boy game like this probably wasn't the wisest move. The melting ice blocks (which I know do not show up in any installments of this era's Mega Man, dunno about the others, only had experience playing the first four of the X series) would have been awesome if the game's sliding wasn't already super messy as it is. I'd have loved this stage a lot more if the sliding was fixed. But I feel like that's something that wasn't so easy to control in early Game Boy games. It's fascinating watching Simon battle through the stage with Cutter instead of using Thunder Beam. When I played I stuck with using the Thunder Beam for certain stage enemies which obviously worked in vain. I think I was just used to its dominance in the NES version. Loving this LP for the record, cannot wait for the rest of it!!

That room you climb into where you have to use the first icicle to hop up and then quickly jump to the other platform took me forever to do when I was playing through this on 3DS a few months ago. It's so easy to hit your head when you're jumping, and it doesn't give you any time to mess up. I don't remember thinking the ice physics were especially annoying except on that part in the second half of the level with all the short jumps, though. I beat the game, but man it got frustrating near the end.
