Hey guys, my mother is on disability because of her heart problems. She has had a pacemaker for the past 10 years and worked a housekeeping job for the longest time, but couldn't physically do it anymore. Then, she moved on to be an office assistant, but then she couldn't physically handle that anymore. Then, lastly, my grandfather passed away as my grandmother's Alzheimer's increased, so after my mom & dad divorced, they hired her to take care of my grandmother on a daily basis. But, my grandmother got bad enough that she had to be put in a retirement home. So, now my mom is without a job and she is limited into what she can physically do. So, working at home seems to be the best likely source of income. My father & mother settled for a very small amount of money in the divorce and it's running out now that she has no income. There's a lot of scam websites online for "work at home mom's" and etc. So, I'm a little hesitant to try those. She's alright with a computer, but she only really learned how to operate one in the past two years, so something like customer support and technical support.......I don't know about those. I've had friends suggest things like beta testing and Odesk.com, but she just isn't very tech savvy. She is crafty and a little artsy, so I've thought about setting up a store on Etsy. But, I wanted to field ideas from you guys who may have been in a similar situation, or also had loved ones in a similar situation. I've been supporting her bills & my bills for the past few months, but I'm running out of money. Help?

I used to provide support for several private practices that used telecommuting transcriptionists (I dealt with three different agencies that employed around 12-15 people that I was aware of), if she has any sort of minimal nursing background she might be able to do something like that. There's also a market for people to do closed captioning for live television programs from home since by law anything that is of public interest (storms mostly) has to be captioned, just dial into an IFB line and type what you hear into the caption bridge, the entire operation is fairly low-tech.

If she's on disability, why does she have no income?

The disability isn't enough to pay for rent, car payments, etc. EDIT: And it was just a couple of days ago that her income with helping my grandma got cut. 89 fucked around with this message at Feb 25, 2013 around 11:54 |

Yeah setup your non technical relative with a technology front to make money so they can call you 100 times a day to ask you how to update their etsy's internet. Being that your relative isn't tech savvy, i'm also willing to wager that they don't have any skills that would net them more than disability before taxes (yes you have to pay taxes on money you make on the information super highway).

89 posted:The disability isn't enough to pay for rent, car payments, etc. If she has no skills, no one is going to be able to come up with a solution for you, lovely as that is. If she was receiving disability payments plus money for being a caretaker and you were still having to help with bills, your #1 task is to bring those bills down.

I was able to get her car payment down from $350 to $100 and I'm trying to help her get into a new apartment that's kind of focused more towards those with disability that is $150 less than what she is paying now. So, that has been some help. But even if the stuff isn't online, I'm just trying to figure out something she can do. Whether it's stamping mail or what.

Years ago, I used to work for a company called Leapforce ( https://www.leapforceathome.com/qrp/public/home). It was a decent paying job that honestly required very little skill... you just needed to follow protocol very closely and use common sense. It is the most boring job on the planet - you basically look at what people search for on google and upvote/downvote results to help make the algorithm 'smarter' - I think I got paid 28cents a minute while on calls or something. She could always do that. Did I mention its boring? Like really really boring. Like kill yourself frustratingly agonizingly boring - but its also decent income if you are good at it. (you start getting more calls as your rating improves, and raises, etc). Hope this can help her out. Edit: I don't think I made it very clear how boring this job is. It is only something I would consider in a last resort situation like hers. If you are just some poor college kid reading this a year from now or something and thinking this is the answer to all your prayers... you are mistaken and will end up much worse off from it, sanity wise. This job will suck out your energy, desire, rational thought and possibly even your soul, in exchange for cash. Go get your A+ and do Apple Remote Support or Supportspace or Support.com - It will only cost you $100 bucks and a few weeks of your life in exchange for $2000+ a month. xechostormx fucked around with this message at Feb 26, 2013 around 05:25 |
