![]() Welcome to Dungeon Petz The Dungeon you formally called home is a sorry sight: sunshine breaching through gaps in the wall, flowers springing up everywhere and even the joyful singsong of birds can be heard. It's enough to bring a tear even to the most evil of Dungeon Lords. Left without a job, your intrepid band of imps wonders what to do next, before one of them gets a brilliant idea! Start a Pet Shop! There's none in town and the Dungeon Lords are always looking for pets and monsters (and ghosts) to defend their dungeons! You set up your shop with a dirty cage and some money and as soon as everything is ready, you realise that there's a new Pet Shop right to your left. And to your right. And directly in front of you. Looks like things will not be as easy as you expected... The Game Dungeon Petz is a brilliant worker placement game, but unlike normal placement game, the unpredictability of your pets and their capricious needs means that you always need to be on your toes and ready to deal with any eventual crisis/problem/catastrophe. The game is divided into several steps, in which you will do various actions like going to the town market to shop for pets, cages and even precious artifacts. After the shopping has been completed, it's time to actually determine what your pet needs and after that is done, its necessary to actually fulfill the needs of the pet in order to keep it happy. Your pets will grow and will attend exhibitions or even be sold to prospective Dungeon Lords, each looking for a specific pet that matches the Lord's temperament. After 5 years of running, the shops will each be judged and in the end the most respected one wins (i.e. manages to keep financially afloat while the others sink due to a diminished market). Will your Pet Shop be the best Pet Shop in town? Join us and find out! The Rules If you do not know how to play, it will be necessary to read the rules below! They are relatively fun to read and since I will do most of the book-keeping, shouldn't be too difficult to digest. The brief explanation that I give in this thread is not enough to play this game if you don't know the rules already. I will answer questions if and when they pop during the normal course of the game.Full Rules Previous Games Want a full example of play to see how the game flows? Check the below links! The Pet "Retirement" Farm Applying to Play! I am currently looking for four players to participate in the game. PMs are required! Please ensure you read the rules before the game starts! Since it is likely a large time investment, please ensure that nothing is coming up that might force you to quit the game. This game will be run at a slower pace than the previous game. Any Questions? Feel free to ask anything about the game or how it will be run! Tekopo fucked around with this message at Feb 25, 2013 around 17:24 |

Basic Game Information Turn Summary 1.1 Show New Exhibition/Dungeon Lord 1.2 Populate Town Board 1.3 Income 2.1 Create Imp Groups 2.2 Place Imp Groups in Town Board 3.1 Place Pets/Cages/Additions 3.2 Draw Cards for Pets 3.3 Play Card on Pets 4.1 Fulfill Needs 4.2 Run Exhibition 5.1 Sell Pets 5.2 Discard Cards 5.3 Spare Imps Clean Poop/Get Money 6.1 Pets Grow 6.2 Food Rots 6.3 Imps Return Needs Summary These are resolved in the following order: Food: One food per need, one suffering for every unfulfilled need. Poop: One poop placed in the game per need. Play: One imp playing per need, one suffering for every unfulfilled need. Magic: One magic resistance per need, one mutation per unfulfilled need. Anger: One anger resistance and/or injured imp per need, loss of pet if any unfulfilled. Sickness: Add number of poop tokens in the cage and number of disease cards, if value is over 2, receive one suffering and one additional per need value over two. Potion: Fulfills any colour. Mutations: One causes -2 coins at sale, two causes loss of pet. Suffering: Suffering Equal to size of pet causes loss of pet. Loss of Pet: -1/10 of your current points (round down). Card Distribution Remember that a card can always be played for it's major need! Example: a green Anger card could be played for just Anger or both Anger and Food. A green Food card can only be played for one Food. Green Deck (Major Need Food) 16 Food Cards 10 Poop Cards 4 Anger Cards 2 Disease Cards Red Deck (Major Need Anger) 12 Anger Cards 4 Play Cards 3 Food Cards 3 Poop Cards 2 Disease Cards Yellow Deck (Major Need Play) 12 Play Cards 4 Magic Cards 2 Food Cards 2 Poop Cards 4 Disease Cards Purple Deck (Major Need Magic) 12 Magic Cards 4 Anger Cards 4 Play Cards 4 Disease Cards Artifacts Books Books allow you to get an extra card in one of the two colours shown, which means you will have an extra card of that colour for the remainder of the game. Imp of the Month Imps don't really understand Imp of the Month awards, so the imp that you give it to will work twice as hard: he can shovel 4 poop instead of 2, play with a pet for 2 (i.e. each pet next to the imp will receive 2 play) instead of 1, stop two aggression instead of only one. The imp, however, won't get twice as much gold. Magic Box This box comes with one food item that keeps forever and counts as both meat and veg! Once the food is eaten, during the food rotting step, one food can go into the box instead of going down its track. Imp Armour Comes with anti-magic padding! Imp armour allows you increase the aggressive resistance/magic resistance by one per imp, without hurting the imp (Up to two imps can use armour). Long-Handled Shovel Allows you to shovel poop before exhibitions and even in cages where there's a pet! Crystal Ball Before anyone draws needs cards, discard up to 3 cards and re-draw from the same colours discarded. Whip of Obedience Allows you to get half a point in all exhibitions (except the two final ones). Board Actions Buy Pets (2 size): (2 slots) Requires at least one gold, allows you to get a size 2 pet. Buy Pets (3 size): (1 slot) Requires at least one gold, allows you to get a size 3 pet. Buy Cage: (2 slots) Requires at least two imps, allows you to get a cage. Buy Addition: (1 slot) Allows you to get an addition to a cage. Buy Artifacts: (1 slot) Allows you to get both artifacts available. Buy Food: (3 slots) Allows you to get food from the veg/mixed/meat tent. Immigration: (1 slot) Allows you to get imps from immigration for the current and all previous rounds. Hospital: (1 slot) Allows you to get a potion and get back injured imps. Selling Platform: (1 slot) Allows you to place imps on the selling platform (they are not returned at the end of the turn) Judge Exhibition: (1 slot) Moves you two spaces up the exhibition scoring track. Imp Shop Actions During Needs: Prevent Pets from Escaping: One imp prevents one excess Anger, imp becomes injured and goes to the hospital. Play with Pets: One imp fulfills one play for each pet he's next to. After Selling/Exhibition: Clean Poop: Clean two poop (even in different cages) from cages that do not house pets. Get Gold: Imp digs one gold, cannot be doubled by Imp of the Month. Tekopo fucked around with this message at Mar 4, 2013 around 12:00 |

Ok, just finished reading through the rules, and I have a few questions: 1a) When you pick up food, does it get placed in the first food aging box, or does it move to the first box when we get to the food aging part of the round? 1b) Does food spoil and go back to the supply immediately upon hitting the final box for food aging? 2) You said the following: "Remember that a card can always be played for it's major need! Example: a green Anger card could be played for just Anger or both Anger and Food. A green Food card can only be played for one Food." I didn't really see this anywhere in the rules, unless you're talking about the "advanced" variant where you can choose to play a need card as a single- or a double-need. Can you clarify? Excited to start playing!

It gets moved to the first food box when you pick it up so at the end of the turn where you picked up the food, it would go to the second box. Food rots when it's within the final food box (3rd for veggies, 2nd for Meat) and then is forced to rot again. To clarify: Pick Up Veggie -> First Box -> Rots to Second Box -> Rots to Third Box -> Rots Completely Pick up Meat -> First Box -> Rots to Second Box -> Rots Completely We are using the advanced variant: it's not really all that difficult and makes the game better in my opinion.

I think I'll pass after my positively abysmal performance last game; following, though, to learn how to not-suck-quite-as-bad! Also Tek you rule, have you figured out a faster way of running this? You said it would be months before you tried again.

I have played Dungeon Lords and loved it. I have heard Petz is equally good or better, but have not played it yet. I would like to rectify this, so I'm in! Edit: Nevermind, this was answered upthread. Some Numbers fucked around with this message at Feb 27, 2013 around 21:47 |

I have a few clarifying questions before I play wrong and screw myself up. You only need to feed pets if you give them Hunger needs, yes? Size of a pet dictates how many cards you draw and needs you must assign? Are pets unique? Will there only be one Trollie, etc during the game? Also, I'm partially colorblind. Is there anyway you could transcribe the color progression on the pets?
|
| # ? Feb 28, 2013 20:20 |
|
Yep, food is only necessary when playing hunger needs, one food per card played. Yes, size of the pet dictates how many cards you draw/how many needs you need to play. Pets are unique. Sure, no problem: Liffard: Green, Red, Yellow, Purple, Yellow, Red, Green Trollie: Green, Yellow, Green, Red, Green, Yellow, Green Stegobully: Red, Red, Green, Green, Red, Green, Green Drago: Red, Green, Purple, Green, Red, Green Purple So e.g. Liffard is currently size three, so the Green, Red and Yellow needs are showing. TenjouUtena posted:God I miscalculated that poo poo. Out of curiosity, why did everyone 4? I had a feeling that would be the highest folks would push to this round. Three didn't seem like enough and would give the player too many options too late in the round (especially considering the evaluation tent is useless this round). Five felt like too many to me considering at any ties, I'd go first this round, and for any one of us that would give the player too few options for spaces this turn. I wanted to be sure I got absolute first pick to get what I wanted. So, four.
