The game is OUT NOW OR INCREDIBLY SOON on pretty much EVERY PLATFORM POSSIBLE. (PS3, Vita, Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux, Wii U eShop, and XBLA)![]() RUNNER 2 is a rhythm platformer, a direct sequel to 2010's BIT.TRIP RUNNER, the fourth game in the BIT.TRIP series by Gaijin Games. Here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juEY-CvjlY0 Yes, that's Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario doing the narration. Dude's got a really surprisingly good voice. Our hero Commander Video, teleported to a strange new universe by the REALITY UN-FUSION BEAM, must run, jump, slide, kick, and all manner of other maneuvers to reach the goal in each level, while picking up gold and powerups to advance the music and score points. Everything is set to music and designed so that each obstacle you dodge will play a note, making random but pleasing songs. There's a bunch of completely ridiculous playable characters, from a pickle man to a burger-headed dude in a leisure suit, to, uh, this guy. If you played the first RUNNER and were put off by its difficulty, don't be scared! There are checkpoints in this game. If you played RUNNER and loved the difficulty, then lucky you! You can just jump over the checkpoints to skip them for a point bonus so you can gloat on the leaderboards, you ballsy person, you. You can get the game in a Game Music Bundle along with the soundtracks for it and the six other BIT.TRIP games for the next two days for $20, or just all 7 soundtracks for 10! All the music is great, so it's a steal. Here's a dev blog with all kinds of crazy bullshit about the game! Here's Gaijin Games's official site! Here's the BIT.TRIP official twitter account! Here's Gaijin Games's official twitter account! Wow! Here's a bunch of screenshots too! ![]() ![]() ![]()

I was really tired of the old giant pixelated BIT.TRIP games. This looks like a refreshing take on the series and I'm really excited for the steam release in about an hour from now.

I preordered it because I liked the first Bit.Trip Runner. I would have been okay with something that is just on par with the repetitive and relatively shallow original, because it was charming and had bitchin' tunes. Turns out, apparently I bought an extremely good game that perfects what the first game did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MRmCCWgIdU Fun fact, mentioned in the OP, that I want to emphasize: Charles Martinet aka voice of Mario is the game's narrator. I really am on the fence about this. I guess I'm retarded but when I played the original I think I barely got past the first world, or at least got up to the first "boss" before just quitting it forever. The music was really repetitive and I just found it way too difficult. Any word on if this is any easier?

Oh hey, I didn't see we had a thread for this. I posted a Trip Report in the Wii U thread, but if you're interested and want a Goon Testimonial: I just finished the first world (of presumably 5, given that I have 20/100 levels complete). Aside from the graphical change (which so far I'm not the biggest fan of, but we'll see how the later worlds are), the biggest thing about Runner 2 is a bunch of quality of life improvements. There are checkpoints, online leaderboards, multiple difficulties, new hazards, multiple characters to play as, secret exits in levels, and the levels themselves are much better laid out. One of my favorite things about the game so far is that there will be a route split in a level, but there'll be two signs before it telling you what you're in for. A green sign is the "standard" route, but a red sign will be harder (and have more opportunities to get points!) and sometimes have a collectable, like a new costume or a warp to a retro stage. There are also blue signs that tell you which way to go for the secret exits, but those routes are usually the hardest for obvious reasons. Also, the world map will tell you if there are any new costumes, etc, in a stage before you enter, so you know ahead of time what to look for. I also like the new retro stages. Now, instead of having to get all the gold in a stage to enter it, you just have to find an Atari floating in the level (and these are not marked on the world map until you find it in the level). The retro levels are shorter than they were in Runner 1, and there's only 25 of them over the entire game. But the biggest thing is that you now get three lives to clear the retro levels, which is a godsend after Runner 1 kicked you back to the world map after failing once, making you redo the regular level perfectly to try again. So far the biggest thing that bugs me is that there's a level called the "Key Vault" in every world, and once you clear it you unlock keys in certain levels (they're marked on the map). The problem is that it's usually later in the world, and half the time the lock just stops you from getting a costume in plain sight. There's a particularly bad example of this in the level where it introduces spring pads, where you can get a key right away, and about 15 seconds into the level, there's a spring pad that will shoot you over a lock, and right behind the lock is a costume. You don't have to do any kind of interesting platforming to reach it, it's just sitting there right in the middle of the level going "Nope, gently caress you, come back after you finish half the world." I'm not liking the new loop hazard. It wayyyyyyyyyyyy harder to get the max score with the stick than with the space bar. Just testing with the first one, I can get around mid 3k at best with the stick, but just drumming the spacebar gets me 5580 (I assume this is the max, I got the exact score twice). I really wish they stuck with binary hazards.Artix posted:making you redo the regular level perfectly to try again. I really wish they stuck with binary hazards. I am not 100% sure but I think with the trace obstacle when it fills up the bar to show perfect on completion I think you are getting maximum score (I hope this is the case as that is a bit less random). It annoyed me at first but I found tracing to the beat started working out for me and I was perfecting most times on all 3 difficulties (in world 1 at least; expect it'll get harder). The Cannon game at the end also can be learnt but it is really annoying to fluff it narrowly after a hard run through. Any idea how some people are scoring more on max difficulty than a double perfect (for example the first level)?

I'm loving this a lot. I think it's done exactly what a sequel to the first should have. I really wish they stuck with binary hazards. I think the max points change for each loop or something, because I get the "Perfect" message most of the time using the analog stick, but still manage to get much higher point totals on some than on others. All in all I think it's nice to have something to make point competition more interesting than in the first, even if it sacrifices the precise binary nature of the game. I am a little worried, however, that with the introduction of dancing for points getting good scores will amount to constantly mashing the dance button at risky times just to squeeze out a few more points and making the game feel a lot less fluid. That hasn't happened yet though, so If anyone wants more people to compete against on Steam, add me! http://steamcommunity.com/id/classicist

I loved runner 1 and have already played an hour and change in runner two. I'm having an absolute blast! I'm not a huge fan of the loop thing (it's really hard to get 4 stars with a stick). However I love the new "dance" mechanic because it opens up a world of doing stupid things to maximize points . Can't wait to see what else they throw at me.

There's something weird going on with the treasure/costumes. If you get one and bonk before the next checkpoint/end of the level, it'll be grayed out in the pause menu. If you finish the level without hitting the open treasure chest again, it will also be counted as a miss in the results screen, yet you still get the costume and it's reflected on the world map that you got the treasure for that level.

For some reason, playing as the pickle-man dressed as a bumpkin makes me think all the faults of my own slow fingers are in fact his. He is a perfect Jimmy Carter-esque punching bag for all of my self-loathing when it comes to trying to do perfect+ challenges. I love the checkpoints so much, especially after finally beating Odyssey the other day in 1.

I think the threshold for "Perfect" is not actually a perfect score on the loop - I've gotten Perfect with 3k-4k on the loop with the analog - I've not gotten the same score as I've gotten with the keyboard though. Testing with xpadder / turbo, the max for the first loop WAS 5580, the same as if I two hand drummed it. I guess having this kind of scoring works on platforms with only controller options, but such a low level of execution required with the keyboard over the analog stick makes it a pretty worthless addition in this case =/

It's a perfect on each difficulty in a level. You can also get up to a Triple Perfect Triple Plus for getting a perfect and a bullseye on each difficulty, but that's a massive pain in the rear end and I dunno if I'm even going to bother attempting that ever. The cannon minigame's not as difficult as I expected it to be but it's still kind of irritating to do. Don't click these if you don't want unlockable costumes spoiled, but wow, this one is REALLY GOOD. Oh, here's my steam profile if anyone wants to add me for leaderboard competition.

Cracked and bought it on my Wii-U. Somewhat bemused that my first time playing the levels is topping me off on my friends leaderboards. While the difficulty is mercifully toned down from the steaming shitpile of Runner 1 I find the screen way way WAY too busy and barely get perfects because it's so distracting. This is a problem that the first game didn't have, and it mystifies me as to why they'd clutter up the screen so badly.

Edit: Anyone who is on the fence about this game because they found Bit.Trip Runner too hard, don't be. I couldn't get past 1-11 in the first game, but didn't have a whole lot of problem finishing normal in Runner 2 with a decent chunk of perfects. I'm kind of disappointed with the dancing aspect, really. Unless you are dancing literally every second that you can, you will never reach the top slot. I like that you're locked into the animation once it starts to give it a little risk, but high scores are basically "Take the hard path, never stop pressing ZR/RT/R2". On the plus side, I just unlocked a dancing hamburger which pretty much invalidates all the game's faults.
