Islamic cleric Aby Usamah At-Thahabi will be speaking at my University on the 28th. On the subject of homosexuality, At-Thahabi has gone on record saying “do you practice homosexuality with men? Take that homosexual man and throw him off the mountain" and asking “If I were to call homosexuals perverted, dirty, filthy dogs who should be murdered, that’s my freedom of speech, isn’t it?" He has also gone on-record endorsing the murder of the kuffar, and that “whoever changes his religion from al-Islam to anything else, kill him in the Islamic state”. So that's gays and non-Muslims. What about women in general? At-Thahabi has said their "intellect is incomplete". My University (Reading) last year got a lot of bad publicity when a member of the Atheist Society (I know the specific stinkyhole who did it in question) wrote "Mohammed" on a nametag and placed it on a pineapple at a societies fair. There was a whole lot of hubbub over offended students and poor atheists screaming "MY FREEDOMS" whenever questioned about the event. The incident appeared on Have I Got News for You (a popular British panel show mocking current events) and the fallout is still kind of being felt. All the same, I feel compelled to attend the speech and question him on his beliefs. Apathy towards bigotry doesn't lead to neutrality, it leads to hate-speech and hateful attitudes becoming more and more prevalent until you get disgusting situations like this. The event is not far away and the University has shown no sign of cancelling the event. Calico Heart fucked around with this message at Feb 26, 2013 around 22:58 |

Ask him why he thinks that a prophet who was so humble that he forbid depiction of himself to keep people from idolizing him would want people to kill in his name. Edit: Alternatively, ask him how his calls for violence are any different from those who led the Crusades that massacred his people. I really wish I lived nearby so I could go to this, identify myself as a gay man, and then offer him a chance to throw me off the nearest mountain or alternatively just kill me with his bare hands. I can't imagine how he would react but I'm sure it would be hilarious no matter what.

FYI OP the guy you're talking about does alot of his talking while on opium. Not that it excuses what he says, but he does nothing with a clear head. So he could easily get called out on it when he claims that someone's intellect is incomplete.

It's a university. One could hope that people could learn some critical thinking, and benefit from exposure to ideas they don't necessarily agree with. So, yeah, attend, and tee up some sick burns for the Q&A. But think hard about it first. If you come with some bullshit strawman, recycled talking point, or long preamble, you'll look stupid, and people will bury their faces in their programs out of shame for your weak poo poo. Why should they cancel the event? Either the guy has something interesting to say, or he's such a lightweight that an indignant sophomore can destroy him with poo poo repeated from the internet. I seriously doubt they are paying much for his time.

Pope Mobile posted:I'm not seeing where Barkin is defending this guy. You're right, and I do apologize. It's just that in a post regarding a noted misogynist and homophobe being given an open platform at a University he decided to single out my use of phrase to describe another (albeit to a much lesser degree) bigoted individual. John McCain posted:Now, you can certainly make a point that using "stinkyhole" as a generic insult is inherently misogynistic, but I really doubt that it was actually used to refer to a woman in this case. Yeah, this is totally right. I should have perhaps used a non-gender specific phrase, even if it was to describe the opposite gender. We use the word in the UK all the time on both genders, but it is pretty bad that the most vulgar descriptive I could think of to describe the man denotes the female gender regardless. It doesn't imply he was a raping murdering pedophile or anything, and makes the whole prohibition seem a little silly. I can see why it'd be considered offensive but it doesn't seem any less disrespectful then labelling a pineapple "buddha" or "kami" or whatever.

The thing is though, it may sound lighter and sillier than most r/atheism-style attacks, but I can guarantee you it still came from a truly hateful place. Not just for Islam, mind you, but for all Religions. It was done solely to upset people, and the person in question was probably hoping to hurt as many Religious people as possible. Besides that, their (the Reading Atheist Societies') Facebook page was filled with "Mohammed slept with little girls!" comments the moment the story got any attention.
