What in the blue blazes is Heroes and Generals?
Heroes and Generals is a mix of Grand Strategy and FPS games. Think Hearts of Iron meets Battlefield. You have the generals, who have units of mans. They then move those mans around a map of Western Europe. When an American mans meets a Nazi mans, a battle commences in which the two fight it out, with skirmishes and what not. The great commanders of our time spend their efforts so that most players, grunts, may fight. When either London or Berlin is taken, a new war starts and everything resets.

Got a nice trailer?
Sure do.

How do I play?
To start off, play the tutorial and learn some basic controls, it helps quite a bit. Then, simply join a battle in-game. You are helping the war effort simply by existing and being there. Focus on capturing points. After a few battles, you will have enough dosh to decide whether you will be an ultra-grunt, or a general.

How to be a good hero
If you want to be a hero, I would recommend buying weapons and creating some new characters. You can decide to be a Tank Crewman, a Pilot, a Machine Gunner, a Sniper, and a few others. These are all self-explanatory. As you rank up you can buy some new guns, and as you complete certain challenges you will unlock combat badges, this game's univalent of perks. They are generally boring but really can help to specialize your character.

How to be a Good General
Buy some Assault Teams and get ordering!

Assault Team Breakdown:

Infantry
Infantry are the backbone of any army. Definitely get these as your first assault team. They can do basically anything you want.

Guard
Cheap, 32 men. Can be specialized into AT infantry, Recon, or a loving BIKER GANG!

Anti-Tank Infantry
AT Inf. are best used in urban operations with tanks on the enemy team. They are bad in wide-open areas and work best when they can easily flank and hide.

Mechanized Infantry
Inf. with halftracks. Very fun to play if you've got a team, great for attacking. Cannot win by attrition as well as normal infantry can.

Paratroopers
Based in airfields, paratroopers can attack towns anywhere in their radius fairly fast. In battle they can parachute down on the enemy and take basically any objective.

Recon
Shoots people from long distances, pisses off transport vehicle drivers.

Tanks
Exactly what you expect a tank to be. Ultra effective against infantry. Cannot capture objectives.

Tank Destroyers
Best used in wide open battlefields, these can destroy enemy armor very effectively.

Fighter Planes
A versatile airfield based assault team, I don't recommend using them as they tend to evoke the inner down syndrome in everyone.

How to get in contact with Goons

I've heard war/horror stories about the European constituency on this game being made of Nazi sympathizers who deny the holocaust and blame the Allies for everything. That said, I've also heard that Axis forces are actually pretty lovely, so I am looking forward to going Allies and trouncing these Fuhrerries. But, I have also heard EU and US servers are now separate?

It seems that server capacity is currently way too low for the rush of people they are getting in open beta. Have fun spending 5 minutes looking for a match. Great server prepartation

You can just ignore the 200 ping warnings and come out fine.

game would be infinitely more enjoyable if I didn't feel like I am playing in a pool of jello and mud.

That said, the modification system is incredibly robust, and the metagame is really cool.

This game is pretty sweet. It's very easy to get into. It's got the large scale feel of WWII Online, mixed with the arcade qualities of BF1942. The micro transactions kind of irk me, though purchase isn't necessary at all it seems, as I went 22-4 my first match with just the default M1 Garand.

At one point, I did kill a German and take his MG42, which was super satisfying to use. I'm kind of sad that goons didn't go Axis, though they have lost every game I've played so far against them.

I can't wait to get a Springfield sniper rifle. I've got a murder boner that needs release

Roughly how big of a download are we looking at here? I might try this out later in the week once the Marvel servers are down.

(Or I might keep playing GRO.)

herr

The download isn't big at all. My Heroes and Generals folder is about 1.3 gigs. I'm really baked, so my perception of time is kind of askew, but I'd say that I went from downloading to playing in under 20 minutes.

Doing my part in liberating Europe from Fritz with my trusty M1 Garand. Running into tanks just starting out is rather frustrating as I'm doubtful frag grenades harm them and I can't shoot the driver unless he is poking his head out of the tank. I might buy some sticky bombs or save up for a bazooka to serve as some deterrence against armor.

So is this a massive FPS like Planetside 2 but with a WW2 theme?

No, not quite. The entire map itself is pretty massive, but it breaks down into individual games with an apparent max of 16 on 16. The size of the in game maps feel more like Battlefield.

There is a game like you described called WWII Online, which I've played off and on for like 12 years, but it's total crap now and not even worth looking into.

Infinitely many points, but zero length.

In as cantorsdust. Played this last night. Plays like Battlefield 1942's slightly retarded cousin. Still captures that arcade quickness, and it has the whole Grand Strategy against Nazis metagame. The M1 is a very decent starting gun. I went 6-15 in my first match, though, because the drat Germans had halftraks and a plane, against nothing but a pile of infantry on our side. We lost

I'm in here as dilldough. from what i've seen, almost nobody has anything better than the starting guns, and the kar has a serious rate of fire disadvantage at least at medium to close ranges. don't pick one up off a dead german in a field or you'll be jumping around while you wait for the bolt action and he runs up on you with a shovel. stick with the m1.

Is there an in game clan system? We should probably be putting LLJK_ in front of our names if not.

This game feels like if Mount and Blade CRPG-Strategus were instead a WWII game. A sort of unpolished retarded fun. If they can iron out the ping and lag, this has real potential to have a decent goon community I imagine.

AT grenades are really cheap, after like 3 or 4 matches you can buy them. Even less than that if you do well.

Okay, after playing a few rounds, come clear to me that if you're willing to stay back a bit and take potshots as they appear, you will wreck this game. Alternatively, sneak behind their current base, and pick off stragglers.

Machine Guns are basically Assault Rifles. It's obscenely easy to go 10-0 without a problem.

Watched a bit of this on a Japanese stream of some sort at work. Watching two Germans share a bike while riding down the road ringing the bell all the way like schoolchildren was pretty funny.

The Germans got absolutely poo poo on though. I don't know if they're even winning any fights at all, they seem just be completely outmanned and getting poo poo on across the entirety of the part of the map I could see.

Germans tend to have very strong armor though, it is just dipshit generals not sending tank support.

Infantry weapon prices are just fine, if you want to be a general then you generally spend money. If you are a hero, Character slots can be a bit expensive but you really only need 1 other char for what you are interested in and you are done. Takes maybe 2 or 3 days of casual playing and you can play armor or air or whatever.
