I have a friend in Melbourne who may be contemplating suicide in the near future due to extended joblessness and having apparently given up hope, and refusing either to become homeless or to live off others; this has been a long period of economic and professional difficulty which hasn't been a secret. It has apparently come to a head. Can people please PM me (or post here) with suggestions about who I can urge them to contact? I'm in Canada. I will call long distance as needed. Note: I am loathe to divulge personal information about them in public fora and ask anyone contacting me to respect that.

Life line on 13 11 14, or suicide hotline 1300 651 251. I don't know if you can reach them yourself but they can call them. Beyond blue is one of the best known depression websites here. http://www.beyondblue.org.au

See if you can find the number for the closest hostpital to him. They should be able to send out a crisis team to pick him up and take him back to their psych ward.

If you even suspect there is an imminent risk of suicide - he's made or expressed a plan, started saying goodbyes or giving his poo poo away, etc - then call the police in his area. I don't know how Baker Acting someone works in Australia but I imagine it's pretty similar to how it is in the US and Canada.
