![]() http://thebaylights.org/ To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, the bridge is being decked out with strings of individually addressable LEDs. The $8 million dollar project, paid for by private donations, is expected to last at least two years, with hopes it will continue on longer. From dusk to 2 am you can expect something like this rendering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYOtVUpsE5M The artist behind the project is Leo Villareal, more of his work can be found here. A live webcast for the opening ceremony starts tonight at 8:30 PM PST : http://thebaylights.org/view The only other recent project like it that I know of right now is the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. If anyone knows of any other large public art installations, post them.

I'm curious how distracting to drivers on the bridge this will be, didn't see that addressed one way of another on the site. But it looks very pretty!

Goon project time. Lets rally the troops and get some donations rolling in to buy up time slots. Which emoticons should we package in? Any catchphrase ideas?

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about when I say I love living in the future. I mean, you wouldn't have to go very far back in time for something like this to sound like pure fantasy, and not long before that it would have been, as the saying goes, sufficiently advanced as to be indistinguishable from magic. And it is magic.

Holy poo poo, that livestream is really loving unnerving when it's just the ambient noise playing in another window. It's a low-quality mic picking up distant road noise and wind, and it's hard to nail down. Gives me the oogies something fierce. e-> Of course, a distant clocktower in SF chimes as soon as I post that. Thanks a lot.

Initially when I read about this, the story neglected to mention that it was paid for by private donations. I was pissed as I figured it was taken from my toll, which I'd rather have less of. That'll teach me for reading basement websites wirtten by Haight hippies. Luckily, I'll be drinking down near Embarcadero tomorrow night, so this should provide suitable brainfuck material at 2am. e: We need an outdoor Journey concert with that as a backdrop. Let's crowdsource it!

Electricity is being covered by credits from a local solar company.

This is visible all the way from College of San Mateo's Admin building. Should be pretty badass to see all the way from there.

Seems kind of weird to be doing this while the other half of the bridge is covered in scaffolding, especially since the new half is opening Labor Day so they could have waited and it would have still been during the 75th anniversary. Now they have to be careful to frame every picture to crop out all the construction. Also all white lights, what is this, the 1950's? Let's throw some of those awful blue LEDs on there and see if we can blind some pilots!

Everything but the outward-facing portion of the LEDs is probably covered by an opaque material, it's the same way they cover the outside of casino resorts with bright-rear end LEDs without waking up the people sleeping inside.
