Alone in space with Bears, Cats, Robots, Lizards, Energy Entities, and some Love.

Hard Reset was developed by Flying Wild Hog, a Polish based company that includes alumni from CD Projekt Red, City Interactive, and the makers of Painkiller. It was released on September 13, 2011 to mixed but largely favorable reviews. One of the biggest complaints of short game time and limited enemies was worked on by the free add on of 5 levels that continued the story and added new foes. This combined game is now the full official version.

The gameplay is clearly inspired by an age of games that has largely moved on by such as Quake and Unreal. It's all about moving fast and shooting faster. At it's core it tries really hard to be a fun shoot 'em up, and I feel it hits that mark. There's also a plot. This is what the manual claims:

The Manual posted:

The world as we know it ceased to exist. Humanity is at the verge of extinction, living in the last closed city of Bezoar. Mankind wages war against machines, controlling vast areas of what became the ‘Barrens’. Machines want to control and assimilate ‘The Sanctuary’, a network that holds billions of digitalized human minds. Our hero, Maj. Fletcher, is a soldier of CLN – a corporation combat unit, established to protect the city. Machines are constantly assaulting the walls of Bezoar. Fletcher moves in when Bezoar’s protective barrier is breached.

The LP
I will be showing off all the weapons, all the secrets, and as much of the Nano collecting as possible. Joining me will be Chocolate Donuts, friend and compatriot. The plan is do do one update weekly at a minimum, but I've never done a video LP before so we shall see how things shake out. I'd like to do biweekly updates.

I'll be playing on Normal, as enemies are just too bullet spongy on harder difficulties. I will also be collecting all secrets, but not necessarily all NANO pickups. There are additional modes that I will do at least demonstrations of.

Spoilers?
Please no spoilers of any kind. The game is not too in depth, but I'd still like to keep a lid on things.

Weapons/Upgrades
The gun system is quite interesting. The player has access to the CLN Firearm, and an N.R.G. Weapon. Each pulls from it's own pool of ammo. You can then purchase new firing modes for these guns, which let's you use more useful and powerful attacks. I'll be prioritizing upgrading the weapons over some of the other upgrades in order to show all the types of guns off, but it will take a while.

CLN Firearm Upgrades

    ASSAULT RIFLE
  • Gatling Barrel Block – A primary weapon mode for the CLN Firearm. A rapid-firing machinegun. Select the Assault Rifle, then press Primary Attack Key to fire.
  • Magnifying Scope -The Magnifying Scope allows you to zoom in on enemies. Select the Assault Rifle and hold Secondary Attack Key to use it.
  • Turbo Engine – Assault Rifle rate of fire increased.
    COMBAT SHOTGUN
  • Shotgun Module - The Shotgun hits all enemies in a short range frontal arc. Select the Shotgun then press Primary Attack Key to fire.
  • EMP Flechettes - EMP Flechettes paralyse enemies on impact. Select the Shotgun and press Secondary Attack Key to launch them.
  • Recoil Spring – Shorter Shotgun reload time.
    GRENADE LAUNCHER
  • Grenade Launcher - The Grenade Launcher shoots explosive grenades. Select the Greande Launcher and press Primary Attack Key to fire.
  • Gravity Grenade - A Gravity Grenade pulls all enemies in range towards it and holds them in a gravity field for a short amount of time. Select the Greande Launcher and press Secondary Attack Key to use it.
  • Reaction Amplifier - Grenade area of effect increased.
    RPG
  • RPG Attachment - The RPG shoots rockets that explode on a direct hit. Select the Rocket Launcher mode and press Primary Attack Key to fire.
  • Laser Aiming Module -The Laser Aiming module allows you to guide the missile to a target. Select the Rocket Launcher mode, launch a rocket and hold Secondary Attack Key to mark your target.
  • Hi Explosive Barrage – RPG explosive cluster warhead.
    PROXIMITY MINES
  • Proximity Mine Launcher - The Triple Tap Mode shoots mines that stick to both obstacles and enemies and explode when an enemy comes into the vicinity. Select the Sticky Mine Launcher and press Primary Attack Key to shoot.
  • Manual Detonator - The Manual Detonator allows you to manually detonate any sticky mine you shoot. Select the Sticky Mine Launcher mode, shoot a mine and press Secondary Attack Key to use it.
  • Extended Pod - Increased amount of proximity mines in the field.

N.R.G. Weapon Upgrades

    PLASMA RIFLE
  • Plasma Generator – A primary weapon mode for the N.R.G. Weapon. A rapid-firing plasma rifle.
  • Plasma Condenser - The Plasma Condenser allows to charge up plasma energy and shoot a cumulative plasma projectile. Select the Plasma Rifle then hold Secondary Attack Key and release to shoot.
  • Magnetic Sling - Plasma velocity and frequency increased, faster charge rate.
    SHOCK BLASTER
  • Electric Taser - The Shock Blaster fires beams of electric current, electrocuting all the enemies in a frontal arc. Select the Shock Blaster and hold Primary Attack Key to shoot.
  • EMP Generator - The Emp Generator allows you to launch an EMP pulse that will cripple all nearby enemies. Select the Shock Blaster and press Secondary Attack Key to use it.
  • Tesla Coil - Blaster total range increased.
    ELECTRIC MORTAR
  • Electric Launcher - The Electric Mortar fires a sticky projectile that launches beams of electric current on impact. Select the Electric Mortar and press Primary Attack Key to shoot.
  • Stasis Grenade - A Stasis Grenade emits a stasis field on impact that will freeze enemies for a short amount of time. Select the Electric Mortar and press Secondary Attack Key to shoot.
  • Hi Capacitor - Electric Mine and Stasis Grenade area of effect increased.
    RAILGUN
  • Particle Compressor - The Particle Cannon beam will penetrate both enemies and obstacles, allowing you to shoot through walls. Select the Particle Cannon and press Primary Attack Key to shoot.
  • X-Ray scope - The X-Ray scope allows you to see enemies through walls. This mode drains weapon energy while active. Select the Particle Cannon and hold Secondary Attack Key to use it.
  • Charging Turbine – Faster particle cannon recharge.
    SMARTGUN
  • Guidance System - The Smartgun allows you to see enemies through walls and shoot homing projectiles that will penetrate any obstacles in their way. Select the Smartgun and press Primary Attack Key to shoot.
  • Targeting Device - The Targeting Device allows you to lock on an enemy and launch a series of devastating obstacle-penetrating projectiles. Select the Smartgun, hold Secondary Attack Key to lock on an enemy, after the lock on icon appears, release to shoot the projectiles.
  • Fusion Cell - Smartgun projectiles cause more damage.

Combat Gear Upgrades

    TACTICAL SCANNER
  • Directional Sensor - Displays the direction of incoming damage.
  • Tactical Scanner - Displays enemy positions on HUD radar.
  • Awarness Module - Displays N.A.N.O. pack positions on radar.
    TRAUMA PACK
  • Hormone Dose - Critical health level triggers enhanced perception mode - you become super fast for a limited time.
  • Enhanced Hormone Dose - Increases damage resistance in enhanced perception mode.
  • Double Hormone Dose - Enhanced perception mode lasts longer.
    HI-CAPACITOR
  • Hi Capacity Magazine - Increases max weapon capacity.
  • N.R.G. Filter - Pickups regenerate more ammunition and energy.
  • Restore Compartment - Weapon ammunition and energy regenerates faster.
    MEDICAL MODULE
  • Endurance Controller - Max hit points increased.
  • Enhanced Centrifuge - Medkits regenerate more hit points.
  • Nano Tourniquet - Increased damage resistance.
    SHIELD EMITTER
  • Shield Booster - Max shield capacity increased.
  • Defensive Generator - Increases shield regeneration speed.
  • Regenerative Module - Shield regeneration starts sooner after taking damage.

Beastiary
As I encounter enemies I'll be giving you the rundown of them here. These Health and Shield values represent enemy health on Easy.

M.M.U.6M Pecker
A very basic melee rush enemy. They are almost always found in large groups and make a bee-line for the player. Their only attack is to jump at the player in an attempt to slash them.

M.E.U. 750 Grinder
A variant of the pecker. Instead of a buzz saw, the Grinder has a set of propellers that it can use to rise off the ground and fly at its enemies.

M.E.U.34M Savage
A suicide unit comprised of a bomb with legs. If the player is at distance the Savage will curl into a ball and launch himself to cover the distance. They explode on death, or on command once within range of the player.

M.R.U11B Gorilla
The Gorilla is a tank, taking a lot of damage to kill. Its main attacks are to rush the player, knocking them backwards and dishing out lots of pain. They can also stomp their foot to release a shockwave that will damage the player.

M.E.U. 130 Flash
Flashes are the first ranged enemy we have encountered. They move quickly and fire a 3 shot plasma blast. If you get up close they will attempt to kick the player. It's best to take them on from cover as if all their hits land, you'll be in trouble. Their center mass is comprised of the torso and head of a corpse.

M.E.U. 13C Puncher
Instead of firing a weapon, these bipedal organic harvested bipeds will rush towards you and attempt to slash you open. They move very fast and often come in groups of 3 or 4.

M.E.U. 46G Spitfire
The Spitfire has a similar structure to the Gorilla, but instead of charging at people, they use the shoulder mounted RPG launchers to fire a barrage of explosives at their targets.

EDIT: Ahahahahaha I forgot about the rediculous plot and how bad the VAs are.

Also you are totally right about those bots being Screamer-esque. I had to look it up, but there certainly seems to be inspiration: http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/images/screamers03.jpg. I didn't think anyone else saw that movie but me.

It's sort of a shame that the voice work and the writing are so poor while the visuals are great and the game play enjoyable. There's a certain charm to the story in how little sense it makes, but something a bit more engaging and rational would have helped a lot.

There are some frustrating game play events and I'll mention them as I hit them, but I like to stay positive so I'll try not to dwell on anything too much. I'm also not sure what difficulty you were on, but it helps to play on Normal. Harder difficulties are just obnoxious.

Oh hey, I remember when the trailer for this debuted, and then nothing more was heard about this game. The hilariously bad VA was one of the things that stood out for me. That and the utterly inscrutable plot summary the MC gives at the start.

Also, I think that last 5% of Nano was that secret stash you showed off, but never got. It looked like you walked right past it shortly before the video ended.

I've seen all Screamers movies due to a previous roommate having a massive movie collection, they're all really good bad movies. I was playing on normal, the waves of enemies gets a bit overwhelming later on, plus I may have made bad upgrade choices as well. I'm gonna dig it up and reload and see how it goes.

The Plot doesn't really become any more clear. We can play "Guess the plot of the sequel" game when the game is over. There will be no losers.

Not sure if anyone else is as anal as me about the Nano, but I am pretty sure the one I missed is behind a dumpster near a big "Breaking News!" tv screen I stared at for a bit trying and failing to get a short announcement to play.

I would honestly suggest giving it a try on Easy. There is obviously far less challenge, but the game can wear a little thin if you aren't enjoying the grind of waves of enemies. On easy you level up faster too, so you get access to everything earlier and less penalty for poor choices. The end result is you become a living god really early on and it becomes a game about just how big a boom and how fast you can annihilate the robots. It's much more fun, the game works best the less you need to worry about it I think.

Does anyone else find that the charged attack just passes straight through enemies a lot of the time? Certainly with gorillas I just can't actaully hit them with it, I have to aim at the ground they are standing on for it to do anything. Is that a bug? Similarly with the grenades, half the time a direct hit will just bounce of a lie on the ground.

The priorities of let's say "Non-Western" games seems to be quite different. That's why I tend to like them so much. Hard Reset is a great example of the love and effort that's poured into games even if the end results are flawed in some way. Here the plot is nigh incomprehensible and we've not even really started. I'd actually like to do something like a "Lost in Translation" series, as most the games on my tentative to LP list are not from Western devs.

I'll look into that when I sit down to do the next episode in the next couple days (got some footage in the can just awaiting this cold to go away so I can commentate). I don't recall having any issues with it however. For the grenades they always reliable detonate when I hit an enemy. Perhaps some armors could deflect them though? I'll check that as well with some of the more layered Gorillas.

Oh god, you just reminded me how disappointed I was that Serious Sam 2 didn't just make the same game but with x1000 more enemies. I would have sacrificed all the graphical advances for just filling the screen with as many enemies as my computer could possibly handle.
Still, Hard Reset is proof that the '10,000 enemies vs You' FPS Genre is still alive and kicking. I'm amazed that I'd never heard of it before.

How long will it be before we get a similar game that simply eschews plot altogether and just gives us pretty weapons and exotic (and chemically unstable) locales to use them in?

I actually just got this game yesterday, and I've played through about half of it.
One thing that annoyed me though, even on normal, there are some fights later on that will obliterate you repeatedly until you figure out the environment gimmicks or weapons that will win you the day.
Particularly that fight on the two floor room at the end of this video is really hard without the grenade launcher or energy mortar.

Some of the later weapons are a little more about variety and utility than pure power. Perhaps it is more about being really destructive when used correctly. Things like the Mortar blast are a hell of a lot of fun though. My first run was pretty much exclusively shotgun and mortar. I'll probably get that in a couple videos. I am trying to properly build to something to make a future boss more manageable.

I have been suitably teased to watch the next episode and see these cinemas you speak of. And of course we don't have cinemas like this in Boston, this is a Polish cinema.

So what you're telling me is that the Polish watch their movies in active power plants?

Given the sheer amount of electric discharge we've seen so far, I think that there is very little in this game that is NOT in some way closely related, if not built into, a power plant.

Thanks for the heads-up! The game still didn't fully click with me, but at that price you can't make a mistake.

Also I think it's funny that Steam assumes that it is Spring.
