The first and original game in the series titled Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors was released in 1993 will not be in this compilation, as it is mostly made redundant by Darkstalkers' Revenge. New Features: -Online Multiplayer (GGPO netcode(thats the good one), and you can display your opponents ping!) -Spectator mode -Replay sharing -Youtube replay uploads -Gameplay Tutorials -Visual filter modes(Don't like the edges on the old sprites? Smear some grease on that poo poo!) -A bunch of little unlockable ditties(art, videos, etc) ![]() So... Darkstalkers Yeah, ok, so... Darkstalkers is a Capcom fighting game franchise which was very much inspired by the success of Street Fighter 2. Now instead of racial stereotypes from around the world, DS features movie monster stereotypes from around the world. From the Wolfman to the Mummy, they are all featured in this franchise although with a Japan flavoured twist to them. The DS cast is/was one of the more memorable lineups in FG history, the characters themselves animate beautifully and each one of them simply oozes personality. The game has traditional 2d fighting game gameplay, with a myriad of gameplay systems. Darkstalkers is a very fast paced series more akin to the speed of the Marvel franchise rather than Street Fighter. Expect a lot of instant overheads, air dashes, and just a bucket-load of rush down as very few characters have any sort of strong defensive options compared to a lot of characters excellent offensive ones. In the second post I will be detailing some of the more esoteric gameplay systems(Vampire Savior only!), so scroll down if you want to see that. Darkstalkers Resources: - http://wiki.mizuumi.net/w/Vampire_Savior This is the closest thing you can get to a Darkstalkers 3/VS bible. Darkstalkers 3 / Vampire Savior system mechanics Now before I write out anything, keep in mind everything you want can be found here: http://wiki.mizuumi.net/w/Vampire_Savior/Tutorial Pretty well anything and everything that is in VS can be found within this excellently produced Wiki. The Key differences from other Fighting Games. -VS does not use the traditional round system. Instead each player has 2 lifebars(symbolized by bats underneath the lifebar). When you are downed you simply wake up again with your second lifebar and the match continues on, if you are KO'd in a corner your position will not better itself as you will find yourself waking up there. -VS features a regenerating health mechanic similar to a Tag game/grey damage from SF4. Simply do not get hit for several seconds and any white health you have will regenerate. -All dashes are -NOT- created equal. While Lilith might simply dash across the ground when you tap forward, forward, Morrigan will literally jetpack across the screen flying upwards if you do this. All the characters generally have unique properties for their dash. -You cannot air-block against normal attack ground moves(you may however block against grounded specials. For example, while jumping you could not block Morrigans stand fierce kick, however you may block her dragon punch. You can straight up be punished for simply attempting to DP a jump-in. -Push blocking: You may know this concept from the Marvel series of games however in VS it is much more confusing and worse. In VS the amount of inputs entered determines your chance to push the enemy backwards, from 3 inputs equaling a 25% chance to 6 being 100% and same button presses do not count. Also when the push block occurs, the strength of the button pressed equals the distance of the foe pushed back, light attack = small pushback, heavy attack = far pushback. -The Dark force: Every character upon pressing any two buttons of the same strength(ie LP+LK) will spend 1 bar of meter and enter the dark force mode. This is different for every character(Jedah can fly, Morrigan gains a clone, Sasquatch gets penguin bombs). The startup of this mode is always invincible. -The Pursuit Attack: Upon knocking your foe down, you can press Up+Any attack button to do a follow-up attack that will deal white(regenerable) health damage to your foe. A common trick is to purposely time it wrong so instead of hitting your foe you miss on their wake-up so you are now right beside them. Now there is a lot of features in the game you may find that are common in other fighters such as guard canceling, EX moves, magic-series combos etc, I will not list every single little detail here so please once again check the systems guide at http://wiki.mizuumi.net/w/Vampire_Savior/Tutorial The Characters! VSav was one of my favorite games to play on GGPO, and Q-Bee is one of the best fighting game characters ever. Evil Canadian posted:-You cannot air-block against ground moves. If your foe has their feet on the ground you are not allowed to airblock that move. However since that is the case you can airblock all dragon-punch type moves because the characters feet leaves the ground. You can straight up be punished for simply attempting to DP a jump-in. For some reason I was under the impression that the Vampire series used Marvel-style air blocking instead of Alpha-style. This is useful to know. Is there consensus on who's top tier other than Sasquatch? I've always heard Q-Bee is #2 or #3, but I rarely see her used on either GGPO or in the odd VSav videos that kouhatsu releases.

That's actually incorrect -- you can block ALL ground-to-air special moves, but not ground-to-air normals. It has nothing to do with whether the characters feet leave the ground visually; see for instance Sasquatch's s. HK, where he does a midair somersault but it's still technically a ground normal. Anyways, Vampire Savior is the best game and it's great that it's getting a release on a platform where maybe people will maybe actually play it. If you want to get a head start, play on GGPO and don't be afraid to say you're new / ask for advice -- the community's really helpful and experienced. Just FYI, despite the appearance of things with her projectiles, she's not really a zoner*. Trust us on this. Seriously. *More specifically, she isn't pure keepaway. If you can use her projectiles at range when the opponent is far, but are comfortable pressuring up close and using them to cover yourself, then you're fine.

A note on tiers, since people were talking about them: The game has some rough matchups (all of them, for Anak, though some aren't too bad) but every single character is ultimately viable at various skill levels of play. Tournaments have been won with all of them. *hopefully Pyron/Huitzil/etc being added won't gently caress that up.

Okay, I honestly stopped paying attention to this release until about a week ago, and could have sworn they'd said long ago those chars would be in. That's fine with me, since I can always play Hunter to get my Phobos/Huitzil fix.

Is Demitri pretty much the "I thought I was playing Street Fighter this is bullshit" character? He feels like Ken with a Raging Demon (and a weird sex-change also-raging-demon )Ending every combo with a sweep appeals to my slow clumsy fingers so I might just play him.

He's the closest the game has to a shoto, but he's still got a lot of weird quirks, like his dash or the fact that he has a piledriver. I'm not exactly an expert, but his gameplan seems to revolve around that Raging Demon (Midnight Pleasure (The Bite))

I never really had a good chance to play this game, and now's a good enough time as any to give it a shot. Only problem is that I've always had in interest in playing Lilith, because I've enjoyed what little gameplay I've seen of her, as a rushdown/tick throw character. Is there anything else I should know about her downsides and why not to play her that isn't covered in the video/wiki?

Is there anything else I should know about her downsides and why not to play her that isn't covered in the video/wiki? Every character in vsav is arguably a rushdown/tick throw character. I'm not really joking, either. Why not to play her is that she's pretty bad, a bit of a more gimmicky, worse morrigan. If you insist on playing her, the most important thing you could note as a newbie is that her superjump (1->9, or downback to upforward) not only has a different jump arc, but when you do it, her jumping MK (I think) turns around if you get on the other side of the opponent.

I always loved Donovan. Just the idea of a vampire hunter in a game with mostly beasties gives me a video game boner. Anywhere someone is putting foot to supernatural rear end is the place I want to be. Also, a pretty drat good character design. Also, how can you not love Victor? I'm so glad DS is back.

Jeffrey posted:So how are the extras in this game? Are there missions? Is training mode as good as whatever the emulator community has put out? There are "challenges" for Vampire Hunter and "tutorials" for VSav. The Hunter challenges are basically like trial mode in other games: one combo per challenge. The VSav tutorials are longer and cover a wide range of things like movement and basic offense and defense for each character. Some tutorials even teach more advanced things like Bishamon's unblockable ES fireball. I wish the tutorials were longer and more detailed but at least they aren't simply trial mode combos.

I have an obsessive need to beat any challenges/tutorials before I go online with a fighter and I got to say the Vsav tutorials are actually kind of hilarious. They are written in character and then just go straight to technical jargon while talking in character. Also gently caress Morrigans last challenge(the 60 hits one), I just had to turn on turbo to do it is stupid.

So while we have far more authoritative players saying much the same, I'll add my two cents: the port seems pretty solid overall. There's stuff you'd love to be there (hitbox viewer) etc, but everything you'd expect IS there, an da few things besides. It feels like a nice iteration/refinement on lessons learned from IG doing 3Soe. I was really glad to see you can modify all the game settings you'd want to, to - setting it to always be Turbo3 instead of asking every fight, etc. If anyone's adding other goons to their friends list, I'm Fayk on XBL. I'll eventually get it for PS3 probably, but my PS3 isn't hooked up at the moment. Note: IF anyone actually wants to see hitboxes, you can do that on PC via lua scripts and MAME-RR or FBA-RR, it just would have been a nice thing to include directly, as usual.
