Aw, son of a bitch!

I did a quick search, didn't see a thread and figured with a trailer now out and about two months to release it's time for a thread.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlNGXOs_vSM

Director: Todd Phillips
Writers: Todd Phillips & Craig Mazin

Cast (as per Wikipedia)

Ed Helms ... Dr. Stu Price
Zach Galifianakis ... Alan Garner
Justin Bartha ... Doug Billings
Ken Jeong ... Leslie Chow
Heather Graham ... Jade
Jeffrey Tambor ... Sid Garner
Gillian Vigman ... Stephanie Wenneck
Sasha Barrese ... Tracy Billings
Jamie Chung ... Lauren Price
Mike Epps ... Black Doug
John Goodman
Melissa McCarthy

Plot

Well, judging from the second trailer the plot seems to hinge on the Wolfpack finally getting Alan some help and taking him to some place for whatever his deal is. While on the way there, they are taken hostage by John Goodman who informs them that Leslie Chow stole 21 million dollars from him and he believes the Wolfpack are the only ones who know where he is. I guess the rest of the movie is going to be the Wolfpack trying to track down Chow with wacky hijinks ensuing. The gang also returns to Las Vegas and looks to make a stop-over in Tijuana as far as locations go.

For those who haven’t been paying attention around the workplace, The Hangover has been quite the popular comedy film series the last few years. The first film hit theatres in 2009 and quickly became a defining example of word-of-mouth success. The best way I can describe it is it was the perfect buddy comedy. It featured four guys: Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianski) and Doug (Justin Bartha) who went to Vegas for Doug’s bachelor party. The first night the quartet had too much to drink (among other things) and wake up the next morning horribly hungover and with Doug missing. The rest of the film is about the remaining three guys trying to find Doug before his wedding which is in two days. It’s a very simple-to-explain plot that is both somewhat relatable (everyone has had a bad drunk night) and open to all kinds of expectations if you were to explain it to friends (which I feel is the reason for the big word of mouth during the summer of 2009). What really worked is the amazing comedic chemistry between the leads. In addition it had a surprisingly complex mystery vibe to it as events were reconstructed that made it more than just watching a naked dude jump out of the trunk of a car. Cooper, Helms and Galifianski would become hot commodies in the years afterwards which kinda makes you feel bad for Bartha but that’s me.

The sequel, The Hangover Part II (2011), is a bit polarizing because it is a rehash of the original’s plot and some people think director Todd Phillips went too far in the shock humor (we all know what scene in particular). I have to say I really wasn't surprised because The Hangover was by far Todd Phillips' tamest movie (the dude's first was a freaking GG Allin documentary while the punk rocker was still alive) and with WB giving him carte blanche with the sequel...oh man. I thought it was alright, it had its moments and the cast was still fun to watch.

Here we are with what looks to be the final film in the series (which is amazing because most comedy films do not survive past the sequel). It doesn't look to be an exact carbon copy of the first two films, which is a plus. I'll probably watch this one because, gently caress it, there just doesn't seem to be enough big summer comedy films anymore.

I'll probably see it because it couldn't be worse than Part II, right?

I guess I wasn't too shocked from the second film. What scene is supposed to be so shocking again?

edit:
Was there a scene where they showed full on penis?

Yeah I barely remember the second, it's just blurred into my mind as an inferior version of the first. Something to do with a transsexual stripper right?

The trailer got a laugh out of me with the giraffe bit at the end. Not so much the poorly CGed giraffe's look of shock, but the cut to the mayhem after worked for me.

The worst thing about this was that it was just glossed over completely which killed any real fun in the joke. (as much fun as surprise sex on men is HAHAHAHA)

So its basically a prison surprise sex joke. Woo

The Hangover pt2 was overall okay for the most part but really lacked the feeling of camaraderie the first one had.

I never got the sense that any of the main three liked each other, even in the first one. The only one they seemed to enjoy the company of was Bartha who was MIA for most of it.

The second one was just so loving boring. The first one, while overrated, was at least sort of fresh and had some genuinely funny moments. #2 was just a snoozefest recycling the premise and trying to top the first but never reaching its goal.

Due Date was a better sequel to The Hangover than The Hangover Part II was. And Due Date wasn't that great either.

I can't imagine 3 will be any better, but these movies make metric poo poo tons of money, so they'll keep coming out whether they're terrible or mildly amusing.

For 3 to be good, they're going to have to change up the formula. No "missing man" plotline, especially not one that gets solved in the exact same way (Stu sees/hears something, then realizes he (Doug/Asian Kid) are back at the hotel all along.)

I'm actually interested to see

1) If they do the full "blackout" plotline again.

and 2) If so, how they incorporate it? At this point, Stu and Phil should be deathly afraid of Allen.

From the trailer, it appears Allen's father/Doug's father-in-law has died. Maybe he had some sort of,
"You must have a weekend in Vegas full of crazy shenanigans to get my fortune" clause in his will?

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if somehow Stu is the one responsible. He wants to "get back" at Allen, so he drugs them, everyone is mad at Allen for half the movie, and then Stu cops up and says he did it.

Craig Mazin just can't make critics happy. Was "Identity Thief" good or not? Has anyone seen it?

The biggest problem with 2 was that it's almost the exact same film as the first one with minor story changes, a new locale and certain things (baby, tiger and so on) being changed to different things but having the same purpose. It really annoyed me when the film starts with a huge twist that should have changed the whole thing but near the middle they just sorta shurg and go "Yeah, it's the same thing"

Like a fist wrapped in blood...

Yeah, 2 stuck so close to the original it was ridiculous, right up to the photo montage at the end. If they do something unique with it, I'm interested, but if it's "Oh my god, I can't believe we passed out again and someone's missing!", I'm out.

I'd say the bigger problem with 2 is its tone. It has a kind of nasty, hate filled nihilistic feel to it. It didn't have the good spirited feel of the first one, if you get what I mean.

I do this technique called a suplex. You probably haven't heard of it, it's pretty obscure.

This was my main problem with the first. I haven't seen the second. The way that Cooper's character treats Helm's is just open contempt and hostility to the point where I can't understand why Helms keeps hanging out with him. At least they explained that Galifianakis isn't their friend, he's just the brother-in-law. The Helms/Cooper relationship doesn't make any sense to me.

Edit: Maybe Cooper and Helms are both friends with Bartha, but not with each other? I could buy that. I haven't seen the hangover in a while so I don't remember if they explicitly state that Cooper and Helms are friends with each other.

That's right, they aren't friends with each other, just mutual friends with Bartha.

I find the first one to be really cynical too, but only on rewatch. The first time through I didn't catch how dark it was. I haven't seen the second one, but am curious about the third. Though it has potential to go in a very poor direction.

I get the impression he's one of those "His girlfriend/wife is his best friend" kinda guys.

I found the second one entertaining and funny. And just like everyone has said, when me and my friends left the theater we all pretty much agreed that we'd paid $12 to see "The Hangover" again. The moment in the sequel when it's revealed that Allen did indeed drug them again is when I stopped giving a poo poo and just rolled with it.

I haven't seen it since theaters, but I recall the bigger issue was it tried to have it both ways. It had some really loving awful and, in retrospect super dark moments but then it sort of handwaved and said "It's all right in the end!". The whole film felt like it had no real stakes, especially when it completely cops out on Chang's death . The second film was grosser, but it had absolutely none of the heart of the first film and just felt cynical and lame in it's attempts to shock.

I didn't see it as contempt or hostility, more as a guy who's sick of seeing his friend get pushed around and just at his wits end with it. THe only times he's openly a dick is when he's freaking out or when he's told he's getting engaged to a poo poo person.

Totally out of control

I assumed that Doug, Phil, and Stu were all friends. The first one had a line from Stu that was something like, "Remember, Phil was always our designated drunk driver." It just always seemed like Phil loving hated Stu's girlfriend, and for good reason. She was a total stinkyhole.

Did I catch a glimpse of Melissa McCarthy in the trailer? If so, I wonder how they'll play her? Seeing as how I considered her the "Allen" analog in Bridesmaids' I'm betting they'll use her similarly in this film. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

I enjoyed Hangover II as a parody of movies that shouldn't have sequels. They seemed like they were totally aware they were in a movie sequel the entire time.

To me they felt like guys who were friends in high school, and have grown apart since then because they're actually quite different, but they still hang out. It just clicked really perfectly in my head and is what made the first movie work so well for me. That shot of them walking down into the casino where they're each wearing what they consider to be an ideal night-in-vegas outfit is very telling.

You can't have your horse in here.

So the latest trailer made me think "oh hey, neat, looks like it has a fun original story, guess I'll check it out. still not seen the second, though, I'll get on that later."

I was pretty disappointed when it turns out "We need to find Chow and we're taking your friend as insurance" is lifted straight from the last movie. Other than that it was pretty mediocre in general - they're fun characters to watch interact but the movie, aside from being an obvious retelling, was just so dark and hateful and pessimistic compared to the first one.

Still think this should be fun, I like the idea of just going balls-to-the-wall for the conclusion, and Goodman seems great.
