HAMDOGS: Like staring into the Flame of God

So a friend and I are going to PAX East later this month, and we want to be able to keep in touch while we about the convention floor. Since we're from Canada, anything phone-related isn't really an option since that poo poo adds up. I was hoping to pick up a pair of walky talkies, but I really have no idea what's a good option - some stuff that is slated for 25 km can barely go 500 m in a mall according to a review, and this is going to be a pretty busy convention.

Not really sure about viable prices, but I'd rather not get top-of-the-line stuff or anything, since I don't see myself using these too often. Maybe $50 at max? Well aware this may just get me some rinky-dink stuff, but as long as he and I can communicate on mostly-opposite sides of the place (about 1-1.5 km), then whatever.

Right now, I'm looking at these: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...e=en#product_aa

Was also going to get an earphone so I'm not holding the thing up to my ear all the time, a recommendation for that would also be nice (though worst case I'll plug in my mp3 earphones, I suppose)

I've never used FRS/GMRS radios in an enclosed space, but have had some experience with a variety of brands used by course workers in an outdoor race setting. Based off a few years of borrowing various models the club has settled on buying a number of Motorola 9500XLs and they've seemed better (range, clarity, runtime) than the Cobras, Unidens and various other brands. This is pretty subjective and again not indoors so YMMV. We bought a few more for the timing crew this year from Durham Radio here in Canada and only $25!

Be careful browsing their site or next thing you know you'll be drooling over Yaesu VX's or ICom stuff and slowly head down the path to Ultimate Goondom as a Ham operator.

HUP HUP HUP HUP HUP HUP

My girlfriend and I are moving across the country in a few weeks, taking separate cars. We want to pick up some decent walkie-talkies for the drive.

There are a bunch on Amazon with decent reviews, but I'd appreciate some goon opinions. Price range is ideally no more than $100 per pair.

Any suggestions?

I was getting sick of seeing that.

I got these. They definitely do not have a 23 mile range in urban, built up areas. Possibly less than a mile. I don't know if this is a recommendation.

wait what

We use Kenwood TK-2300s at work. Out of the price ranges listed here, but I will recommend Kenwood in general, even the older models were wonderful compared to the Motorolas we used to have (especially Cobras, which are garbage, relatively speaking.)

If you can find a pair of used Kenwoods on Craigslist/Kijiji, you might be able to get a great deal, and they'll be better than any consumer-quality stuff you get from Motorola et al.

Why yes... I am full of stars!

I have these. I don't use them often but they seem to work great. Lots of good reviews and all that.
