Trout Clan Daimyo

In the years after Bayushi Shoju became Shoju I, Emperor of Rokugan, many things changed, and many remained the same. The Clans were reordered and reorganized, and while there was peace between Great Clans, the commoners knew the depredations of bandits, ronin, and other, worse threats. Shoju I, with his Bloodsword, Ambition, by his side, became paranoid, and formed a force of secret informants and spies to monitor his Empire for traitors, conspirators, and malcontents. I, Miya Shouko, witnessed with my own eyes the suffering of the people during this period, for it was during this time that I came of age and travelled the land as one of the Miya Heralds.

The Winter Court of 1133 in Otosan Uchi was one of the more treacherous periods in Imperial history. Shoju I, made paranoid by the whisperings of the Bloodsword, was already on the verge of madness when the unrest in the Empire reached its highest point, and those of us who spent time in the court that year were in constant danger of being executed if the Emperor believed us part of a plot against him. And yet, the members of the court, as they had the Emperor’s ear, truly held the fate of the Empire in their hands as the events of the winter unraveled…

-Excerpts from the introduction of The Scorpion Emperor: A History, by Miya Shouko.

It is early winter 1133, and Emperor Shoju I has decreed that this year, Winter Court shall be held in Otosan Uchi itself, the seat of his Empire. It is whispered, though never openly, that the Emperor fears assassins on the road, and refuses to risk travel even in the company and protection of his Imperial Legions—whom he does not fully trust, even now.

Still, it can’t be denied that Otosan Uchi is a pleasant enough place to winter, and as delegates and representatives in the Imperial Court, the amenities of the Imperial City at your disposal are quite nice, far moreso than if you were in some isolated Kyuden in who-knows-where—Shoju I has not selected the more “traditional” Winter Court locations at any point in his reign, once even deigning to visit the lands of the Sparrow. That was a particularly trying winter.

You have all been invited as guests to the gempukku celebration of one of the up and coming young noblewomen of the Miya family, who has selected the name Miya Shouko. The young lady is said to be a talented historian in addition to her typical family duties, gathering stories wherever she goes and compiling them—already she has made contributions to the Imperial Histories. Given the Miya family are still largely untainted by the overall political tone of the past ten years, remaining idealistic and friendly, the invitation was a good chance to go somewhere you could let down your guard somewhat.

The official bit is over, with Shouko having completed the ceremony with ease, and you are now mingling and giving gifts to the new samurai. What gift have you brought for the girl and how will you present it?
To ease your minds: the Emperor is a busy man and has declined the invitation to attend this celebration, though of course he was the first to be asked. He is not here.

Please also post your character sheet for my sanity.

A chance to travel to the Shouko household in Otosan Uchi is not one to be frowned at, especially for Asako Kenta. He loves a chance to go new places and has been happily enjoying the celebration. His gift has yet to be officially presented, but it was carefully chosen - Kenta is smarter than he seems, and while he is not quite the historian his cousin is, he's still an avid student of military history.

That was why he chose what he did - a copy of Ikoma Noritobe's The Prince of Heaven, a biography about the military efforts and grand adventures of Hantei II. It was one of the first books he ever read, and one that spurred his interest into war tales and, eventually, strategy and wargames. To personalize the gift, he has tucked a folded crane into the front cover - a special craft of the locals just outside Otosan Uchi, which he picked up on his last walkabout.

It wouldn't be Kenta if he didn't include some terrible tourist kitsch along with a reasonable gift.

Hikaru finds himself in uncommonly high spirits at the invitation. Such a request from a colleague of sorts-- even if he has not read the young lady in question. Well, the opportunity to learn her particular areas of interest seems pleasant enough. History was quite a wide field, after all.

Already he'd spent quite some time laboriously copying out copies of his two most recent commentaries on segments of the histories, slaving over the pages and throwing out any that was any less than perfect. The inside covers he'd scribed meticulously-selected haiku which he felt best captured the tone of the era in question. Each of them he'd had bound with faintly-patterned paper and tied with thick, dark ribbon.

Perhaps he was trying too hard. But a man had to have dreams, didn't he?

Still uncertain after all these years.

Utaku Yue

It is rare to find Yue in anything but a dour mood but this is an occasion that finds the Shiotome yojimbo relieved. There are things in this court she finds troubling, there are problems that gnaw at her. Celebrating a young and talented Miya’s gempukku is not something she is conflicted about. It is something blessedly free from conspiracies – at least she hopes it is.

The Utaku lingers at a polite distance, a fair bit taller than even many of the men present, wearing the decorative armor of her station lest she be mistaken for a courtier, all while waiting for her turn to greet the honoree. She holds in her hand the gift, carefully chosen, though the object itself are not so important as what it symbolizes. A small wooden tube, ringed with bands of brass and sealed at either end with smooth glass fashioned by a Iuchi craftsman her father had known. The whole thing is wrapped in a sheet of purple silk. She has no desire to make a spectacle of the gift – its use and message is for the young girl herself and Yue has no special urge to send a broader message to the attendants of court with it. And yet, the gift is no secret – if the others wish to watch, let them.

As the courtier before her gives way, she exchanges small pleasantries with the girl before finally handing over the gift, “It was a gift to my father, and his gift to me. It is used to view things with greater clarity regardless of your vantage, Miya-san. I can think of nothing more valuable I can offer than a more detailed view of the world before you, a view without hindrance or compromise. I imagine that in the fullness of time, we will all reap the benefits of your efforts. Congratulations, Miya Shouko-san.” She manages a broad and cheerful smile at last, rare enough for Yue.

If it wasn’t clear, the gift is a crude spyglass, an uncommon device even among the Unicorn but not so rare as to be some Gaijin toy!

Osen has been enjoying Otosan Uchi a lot more than he thought he would, mostly because this gempukku ceremony has allowed him to relax a little. Until now, that is. Gift giving is a stressful thing to Osen, who has always been pragmatic and thus not very good at giving tasteful gifts. The gift he brought today is a single large yellow feather kept inside a polished sandalwood box. Holding onto the gift makes Osen nervous, so he makes sure to give it to the young Miya as soon as he sees an opening.

"A bird flew over the head of Yoritomo Kikaze, my brother, during his gempukku ceremony last year and shed two feathers. It is seen as a sign of good luck when such a bird sheds a feather during a young samurai's gempukku, but two feathers is almost unheard of. I held onto the second feather knowing that I would one day find who it was meant for. I believe the feather was meant for you, Miya-San. It will surely bring you good fortune."

Having given the gift does nothing to calm Osen down. He now worries that she might think he was implying that she was meant to be with his brother. Why is giving a gift so complicated? He should have given her a fishing rod.

Kitsuki Tsukino

The Gempukku ceremony... Tsukino can't help but think what kind of ceremony would she give to her young son, and how the last few days on Otosan Uchi were difficult for her. With her little Iori and her husband on the Dragon lands, she has been on her own in the capital for the last few days, mostly cloistered after a sudden fit of coughing she got on the way there.

On her hands is a scroll with a painting of Miya kneeling before Hantei Genji during the coronation of the latter. Indeed, she wanted the Imperial Heralds of their allegiance, a tiny act of rebellion against her original family's Clan. Whether it will be noted, however, is to be seen.

"Your Clan has been of great service to the Empire, Shouko-san. I truly hope that you help this tradition forward. May you be blessed by the Kami."

Yataro was in a state of full and complete relaxation. For him, this was the perfect chance to find a nice area to sit next to some finely cultured people, and simply work on his poetry - and, perhaps, his origami, or maybe his painting. His love of the arts, at any rate. And, hopefully, hopefully, it wouldn't be boring.

The Crane waited for his friend and charge, Doji Yamada, to deliver his gift, before presenting his own. Both were carefully chosen together - Yataro presented a booklet of poetry from all major and minor clans throughout the Empire, collected by the Crane who learned each poem individually from traveling Miya who were asked what their favorite poem was, and the courtier Yamada in turn presented a larger book that spoke and illustrated the story behind each poem, hoping the two gifts would intertwine and appeal to the new Miya's love of history and storytelling, while likewise painting Yamada as the more learned and cultured of the two. He is the courtier, after all.

Yataro couldn't help himself. After the two Doji had presented their gifts, he gave a single haiku as a part of their thanks.

"Travel brings stories
Each, as a snowflake, unique
Lifetime of pleasure."

Yogo Tashimi

Tashimi approaches the now adult Miya. Gempukku ceremonies among the Miya are always impressive events, if not as portentous as those of his clan, and they are eminently more public. They are an interesting people, the Miya, apparently so open and honest, but Tashimi suspects it's a front. Indeed, he's sure of it. But they're a clever people, to hide their secrecy beyond honesty, for most people just look at the front of a matter without paying attention to what's underneath.

As he approaches, he thinks back at the things that those who previously approached gave the girl, but what his opinions are of their gifts, no one else could say. He bows to the girl deeply, and then takes out a box. "Congratulations on your Gempukku ceremony, Shouko-gozen. This gift is unworthy of you, but I hope you will accept it in spite of the fact that it is obviously worthless and inferior to anything else you're getting."

Inside is a calligraphy brush. "You may find it amusing to know that this brush was at one time owned by Yogo Hirota." Hirota was, of course, the 9th century historian who wrote what was, at the time, a fairly controversial history of the First Yasuki War, but one that was now considered the approved history of the conflict.

Shosuro Tsubo

Attending these social functions was becoming a larger part of Tsubo's duties, and it was beginning to make them less enjoyable. Previously they presented a light-hearted adventure in navigating the social strata, and trying to discover whom hated whom from the midst of entirely amiable party guests. Now he could no longer indulge in that game, so much as it influenced his ability to root out plots that could hurt the emperor. Still, this was a relatively tame gathering, maybe he could have a little enjoyment alongside his vigilance.

The gift he had selected was an obvious one; Bayushi Tangen had been an ancestor from his mother's lineage, one that Tsubo's grandfather cherished and taught Tsubo to respect. A copy of Lies with a commissioned piece of artwork for the cover was presented with the following speech: "History can be thought of as extracting Truth from the past, where Truth does not always lie in the open. I hope that the inspiration in here can assist you in seeing the past for what it is, whatever mask it wears. Many congratulations, Shouko-san." Tsubo give a bow and a flirtatious smile, and politely returns to the social festivities.

An invitation to a ceremony is not just a chance to meet new people and represent your clan and family, for Katanobu it is also a chance to check out the art. A lot of what he sees is good and a few are outstanding but Katanobu appreciates it all. The odd misplaced brush stroke or too-flat colour might detract from the overall aesthetic, but the artistic expression is still genuine and moving.

Pulling himself away from a fantastic 8th century Akiyama, he notices that there is an opportunity to present his gift to Miya Shouko. Walking over to her he waits with courtesy while her latest guest presents her with a gift, unable to help overhearing the last few words spoken.

"Travel brings stories
Each, as a snowflake, unique
Lifetime of pleasure.
"

This makes Katanobu smile. The juxtaposition of the lifetime of pleasure with the ephemeral nature of the snowflake is especially well done.

Once the courtier has moved on, Katanobu approaches Shouku and greets her with customary cordiality and presents her a painting made by his own hand.

It was his the best of three pieces he'd been inspired to make as Autumn had started to close in and his heart had been filled with a desire to capture an aspect of Summer before it departed. It had been sitting completed for a little while now and was good enough to serve as a respectful gift for her.

Shouku of course refuses the gift as etiquette demands before finally accepting it at Katanobu's insistence as is customary. His duty fulfilled, he makes an excuse to leave her so that the next in her long line of guests can present their gift and hastens after the man who spoke to her preceding him.

As he draws close he recognises the man as Doji Yataro. Though they spoke little, he recognises him from the Emperor's court. Of course, it stands to reason that a person with such an elegant tongue would be a Crane. Even moreso that they would be Doji.

"Yataro, Yamada" says Katanobu as he greets his fellow Dojis, "It is is a pleasant surprise to find you here. I overheard your poem and just wanted to say I thought it was fine work."

Isawa Hikaru

After the presentation, and a distance enough away for discretion, Hikaru elbows Kenta lightly, still almost giddy at the occasion. "You think she appreciated it, nii-san? You don't think it was too much, do you? But I couldn't resist when I'd heard her field of interest. I hope she doesn't think it's too self-aggrandizing." He pauses, then adds, "I mean, professionally speaking. It's not a big field. You want to make a good impression. For professional reasons." The fact that she was a pretty young woman had nothing to do it, of course. Nothing at all.

He's vaguely aware of what a flimsy cover-up of his ulterior motives he's doing, but he's reasonably confident he did far better job in front of Shouko herself.

Kenta puts a hand on Hikaru's shoulder, smiling broadly. "She did, I'm sure. You'll do fine, I'll help you out. After all, you two will be working in the same field for a long time now, won't you?" His grin shows that he's more than able to read the ulterior motives here. But at least he approves!

"Now, don't gush, you need to look good here. We'll go talk to her, then I'll go and grab some food so you two can chat. Classic funbisha opening. You just get her talking about her favorite parts of history, yes? You'll be the only man in the room who can keep up with her."

Pause.

"Besides me, of course, but I have a rendezvous with the hors d'oeuvres."

Hikaru takes a deep breath, and nods as he calms himself down. "All right, let's go pick up a drink-- a small one-- while we wait for the presentations to wrap up. That'll let me calm down some. Charming. I can do charming, if I just stay focused." He too, skips a beat, before adding, "And, eh, maybe she has a friend with both a fine chef and a fine library?"

Miya Residence

Shouko seems delighted by all of the gifts she has been given, though she of course refuses each the traditional number of times as is proper. The celebration continues, and food is indeed brought out to enjoy, though in more modest presentation than one might find at an Otomo or Seppun celebration--the Miya have never been particularly ostentatious.

There is a slight commotion by the entrance as a new guest arrives, one who is immediately recognizable. Dressed in exquisite red and black, with an elegant mask accentuating rather than concealing her cold beauty, Shoju Kachiko herself has arrived, unexpectedly. Immediately, a hush falls, once-lively conversations becoming subdued and quiet. The Miya hosts, Shouko's parents, rush to greet the Empress.

"Please," Kachiko says with a dismissive wave of her hand. "There is no need to spoil such a lovely celebration on my account." She saunters over to the table where the gifts have been placed on display, a slight smirk twisting her lips. "Well, these gifts make my own look positively thrifty, I'm afraid."

Turning to Shouko, she produces from her sleeve a scroll bearing the seal of the Emperor at the bottom. "I'm sorry, my dear, but I only have one of these to offer you..."

"What is it?" Shouko asks after a moment, after it becomes obvious that Kachiko is expecting the question.

"A pardon," Kachiko responds. "Your parents, you see, are both accused of treason against the Emperor. On this special day, I was able to convince him to grant you this pardon...but you will need to decide which of your parents will live."

Shouko's eyes widen. "I--I cannot..."

"But you simply must, Shouko-chan! I went to such trouble to obtain it for you!" Kachiko seems to be enjoying this, like a cat playing with a small rodent.

"No, I--how am I to choose--I can't do it..."

"I'm sure you can find a way. Perhaps one of them spoke to you unkindly. If you'd like I'm sure we can find some straws, and you could have them draw straws for it?"

"Please, don't do this," Shouko begs, on the verge of tears.

"It is the Emperor's will," Kachiko says. "You would deny it?"

With a sob, Shouko takes the pardon from Kachiko's hand. Kachiko smiles. "There...was that so hard? Shall I send for ink and a brush immediately, or would you like to think on it? Don't think too long though, my dear...oh my, such a fragile young thing," she amends as Shouko flees the garden in tears. "I do hope she recovers in time for the execution." With a laugh, Kachiko turns and leaves the party. As she reaches the gate through which she entered, she glances over her shoulder.

"Carry on, then," she snaps, and is gone.

Still uncertain after all these years.

Utaku Yue

Her posture goes rigid the moment the Empress’ arrival is made clear. A shadow falls over her face as the more grim Shiotome emerges, the one that stands fixed in the Emperor’s court each day. As the masked woman revels in her… duty – if this could be called that – Yue struggles to suppress her scowl and remain… ineffectually passive, as she ever does, these days. Every fiber of her base nature bids her to speak out, to say something and yet it is the years of service that hold her silent.

Her eyes roam everywhere but the Empress and the Miya girl, searching the faces of the court personalities for hints of disgust, any tell, any evidence at all that others are as uncomfortable with what was done here. She stands fast and waits for the Empress to leave before leaning in to confer with Ide Haku, the elder representative of her clan. “No, I do not think it would be prudent, Haku-san.” The Utaku folds one hand behind her back and takes a deep breath. “It will be difficult for her, Haku-san.” She answers her clansman’s questions curtly, in no mood to talk. Maybe this is the best lesson she could learn on the day she becomes a woman. Yue silently eyes the cup in her hand, wondering at the nature of this treason. Verbalizing that curiosity could shorten her own life, and would be unlikely to lead to any answers. It is not an unfamiliar thing, unfortunately.

Bummer. Here’s to hoping Yue isn’t nominated as an executioner.

Isawa Hikaru

Rather than pace himself, Hikaru drains his sake all in one go, white-knuckled. He sets the cup down with deliberate delicacy, but has to practically pry his fingers away from it. "Is that so," he says softly, low enough that only maybe Kenta would hear it. "So that's how it is."

He presses his spectacles up his nose, pensive frown returning as he lapses into silence. The Empress' cruelty was notorious, but he had never witnessed it firsthand before. His aspirations of just moments before were dashed, but they hardly seemed to matter anymore.

But that single, fragile moment of joy shattered so strikes at him just so. But why? Not because of his own parents; he cannot even remember his mother's face, so young was he when it happened. And not on Shouko's behalf, at least not wholly. Hikaru knows her not at all, and for all his flights of fancy earlier, he hardly feels the agony of her soul on any personal level. His sympathy goes with her, of course, and this is a moment that makes him dread his trained memory, but... no.

If this were true treason, neither of them would be permitted to live. The thought stands out starkly in his mind. Questioning the Empress' claim, at least to himself, comes naturally enough-- such is his profession, at least in the historical context. But it still feels strange to think such a thing of an event played out before himself. But he supposes that's what comes of desiring to place oneself so close to the heart of things.

But he's not fool enough to say any of that. Instead he broods, and makes to pour himself another sake, a larger one this time.

Shosuro Tsubo

The arrival and subsequent proclamation of the Empress has a strong impression on young Tsubo. He is forced to hide his reaction under a stoid, emotionless expression as a mask against inquiry, much like everyone else in the room. Tsubo's mind, however, is racing with the sheer elegance of it all. Such a masterful performance of circumstance and misfortune, almost as if it were straight out of the script to a new Kabuki play making the rounds in town. It was a pure Scorpion display, the kind that Tsubo often wished for in culminations of the mini-plots he'd played at his adult life. Lady Kachiko clearly had a panache that he could only aspire towards.

Duty eventually overtakes his awe, with the realization that not everyone's mask will be solid in the light of such an event. Treasonous conspirators especially may have a hard time concealing their true face, and with the parents implicated in treason, family members and close friend are a natural place to look for their accomplices. Tsubo quickly scans the room for any curiously out of place expressions.

The strongest! The smartest! The rightest!

Doji Yataro

Yataro is about to respond to his fellow Crane when the Empress arrives. He feels his blood run cold just at the sight of her - the reputation of the Empress, woman who had ruined the lives of countless others purely for her own amusement, was well known.

His suspicions, of course, were soon justified. It was through previous training and practice that Yataro's hand never once strayed nearer to his katana - doing so, of course, would do little more then end with both his and Yamada's life ended. If they were lucky, it would be on either a Scorpion's blade or on their own wakazashi. If they were unlucky, then Yataro had heard plenty of rumors regarding the very sudden dishonorable conduct of any who would slight her or her husband that often denounced them to a dishonorable execution.

Nonetheless, his hand nearly twitched when the execution sentence was actually delivered.

Keeping his face as calm and collected as he could - as he needed to - Yataro was just as careful not to meet the eyes of any others or turn to look at his courtier charge before the Empress had left, and even then to wait the brief moments needed before conversation could be held once more. As soon as he was comfortable with the atmosphere, he turned to Yamada and gave a short nod, already guessing the Doji would soon attempt to make his way to Shouko's side and offer his assistance and friendship. Pragmatic, but not cold; the Miya should find his friendship welcoming, and would need his assistance, especially as both Doji come to the quick conclusion that this reveal may in turn be an attempt to set the young Miya up for treason herself. The Scorpion were fond of such plots, after all.

It's a good thing that Tashimi is wearing a mempo, for his lips curl up in a hint of an unrevealed smile. How clever the Empress is! How masterful her gamesplaying, and how merciful she was. Court life is so entertaining, after all.

Kitsuki Tsukino

Tsukino quickly bows as the presence of the Empress is known. "Kachiko-sama." She whispers with her head still down, lifting it just a bit as if to make sure the woman that entered the room is the same one Tsukino spent so many hours of her childhood with... Hours in which she learned to grow contempt for the now-Empress.

Alas, it appears that Shoju-sama is making quite an amount of enemies. The members of the Imperial families that didn't killed themselves out of disgust were still disgruntled with the new Emperor, and the possibility of the Miya to plan a betrayal or to keep their allegiances with Toturi's men were incredibly high. Still, it was devilish even for Kachiko to give such a choice to the young Miya. Yet, that kind of pettiness is what fans the flames of rebellion, not extinguish them. Perhaps Shouko-sama would now have the kind of personal grudge that fueled many acts in history.

"I respectfully disagree about what My Empress said about her gift. If anything, that is a most kind one, Kachiko-sama. I am sure that Miya Shouko will be sure not to forget it." She says to the Empress, her eyes looking the ground in order to avert the gaze of the woman leaving through the gate.

Smashing your way into our hearts one skylight at a time

Doji Katanobu

The Empress! What a beauty. Katanobu is busy trying to think of a way to carry on his conversation with Yataro while simultaneously resisting, poorly, the desire to sneak looks at the Empress.

This appreciation for her aesthetic turns to horror as Kachiko makes her announcement. Just like everyone else in the room, Katanobu desperately tries to hold on to the thread of the conversation. In truth he can't even begin to recall what mundanities he uttered to present a respectable face. All he knows is that while his acting ability allows him to maintain a smiling cheerful disposition, he can feel his eyes betraying him by welling up.

Making excuses about the servants improperly cleaning the room and leaving it too dusty, Katanobu hastily retreats to the adjacent rock garden and spends a few minutes composing himself. Dabbing at his eyes with his sleeve, the cruelty of it still gets to him. To have the happiness of her Genpuku shattered by the awful news, it would make make a decent haiku if it weren't so terrible a situation. Katanobu can barely imagine what she is going through, this young girl. Young woman, he corrects himself, remembering that she is now a woman.

Kachiko's involvement is saddening too. The Shoju dynasty is barely established and at best precarious. They are not well loved and this mixture of fear, terror and power is one of the few things they can rely on. Katanobu cannot believe that even a member of the long reviled Scorpion would truly find joy in an causing so much misery.

Oh he has heard all the tales, even told a few of them before Shoju claimed the throne, but it seems so malignant as to be an unfair caricature. No, he can only believe Kachiko has no choice. To survive the Scorpions must be feared and respected if they are not going to be loved. To make that work, they must act like this. She is doing her duty as Bushido demands and Katanobu can only feel pity that she has been driven to such uncompassionate acts.

Feeling more composed now, Katanobu goes back inside. The guests are still very muted but it's not lively conversation he is after at the moment. Instead he goes to track down Miru Shouko. She is young and will need his help.

Osen's heart starts beating faster as the Empress makes her entrance. As beautiful as she is, Osen is also aware that she may just be the most dangerous person in Otosan Uchi right now, especially to someone like him. His thoughts are soon confirmed as she presents Shouko with the pardon. What rotten luck! "It will bring you good fortune" I said. Stupid feather. I might as well have given Shouko the taint for all the good it did.

Having a heard time concealing his anger at this open display of cruelty, Osen stares at nothing in particular, pretending to be very interested in the garden's decorations, pretending that his frown is one of concentration. He gives Shouko a sad look as she leaves the garden. She will not even have her parents to comfort her.

After a few moments a servant emerges and, in an apologetic tone, announces that the guest of honor and her family will not be rejoining the celebration, but that you are all free to take advantage of the hospitality of the house if you so choose.

A number of people immediately make their excuses and depart, but not everyone. Some of those who remain seem inclined to gossip about the circumstances, while others do their best to pretend nothing untoward has happened, as impossible a task as that may seem. Only one or two of the other guests seem inclined to go comfort Miya Shouko or her family, though they are firmly but politely rebuffed by the servants (as are any of you who share that aim.)

"Well, it's plain to me that the whole situation is a farce!" declares one guest, a Mantis who's had a little too much sake. "All men know that the Miya family have always been loyal to the Empire, and if they really were traitors, why would the Emperor--may he live forever--choose to pardon one? It'sh some kind of test!"

People are moving away from the man quite rapidly.

Kenta

Asako Kenta's nearly everpresent smile fades slowly as Kachiko enters and speaks. He pats his cousin on the shoulder. "Well, there went that idea. There is nothing to be done." Kenta is not happy, but...in this court, with these people? Kenta has learned not to show disapproval. If it is done by the Empress, it is right, by definition. Acceptance is the only way.

In a way, it's a very elegant play, part of his mind notes. The strategy of it is interesting - a sharp move, a cruel one, to flush out those who are foolish enough to become upset. Potential traitors. Were Kenta to develop a way to root out traitors among a military unit, he might devise something similar - cruelty to use the feelings of camaraderie between soldiers and the disobedience inherent to a traitor to root out who was untrustworthy.

Interesting.

It is much, much easier to view things as a game.

He chews thoughtfully at his food, turning to look at the complaining Mantis. This would be the first one rooted out, even if he was no traitor himself. Untrustworthy, and in a place like this, that could be just as bad. He frowns, trying to recall the man's name and actions. "Are you all right, Hikaru-nii?"

Not sure what I'd roll for that.

Hikaru watches the Mantis sign his own death warrant, then notes the poor sap who attaches himself to the soon-to-be deceased. "Perfectly," he says with perfect chill, keeping his volume low enough for relative privacy. "I'm merely awestruck at the enormity of such a gift. It will stand for the ages, surely."

He slowly, slowly sips his drink, letting each moment cool him further. The balance that he sees arising becomes clear -- the too-bold Mantis standing as the extreme of one pole, the ones whose dissatisfaction is rooted out. Still others who would be frightened into silence.

But this was the sort of thing that would create dissatisfaction amongst the subtle as well as the blatant. Keeping this up as she was... how long would Kachiko live?

She imagines the wheels of court begin to turn and grind on their axles, in some sort of maddening way. Perhaps the drunk Mantis had the right of it, and this was more schemes within schemes. But Yue knows from experience that all Imperial families are loyal up until they aren’t. If there are traitors, then decree and be done. This… game corrodes the base around the Emperor. I am no master at court but even I can see the fear in these people’s eyes. Maybe that fear can serve a purpose but only to a point.

Outwardly, the tall Shiotome simply holds her cup – and does not drink – standing as a silent pillar amidst the shuffling and murmuring that follows the host’s departure. For the umpteenth time, she feels stranded alone with her duty and her emotions. Abruptly, she raises her cup, finishes the drink and turns on a right angle to face the Ide gentleman accompanying her, “Kaku-sama, will you stay much longer?” She had a night of trouble sleep ahead of her, and she wished to get started on that. If duty permitted her, she would plan to return here in the morning, though.
Those small words you gave earlier will be truly empty if you do not attempt to provide some gesture here, Yue. drat the appearances. It is a risk, but one Yue could afford more than others – her nature and her reputation could possibly insulate her from suspicion. Her performance of her duty should be proof enough that she harbored no rebellious intent.

Instead, there appear to be some interesting fellows there, like the Crane poet and the two Phoenixes.

She approaches the bespectacled one from the aforementioned two, the left sleeve from her green-and-red Kimono covering her mouth in order to muffle her words from prying ears. "Perhaps that man is right. There are far too many people here who refused to leave a traitor's household, and what is that but a sign that it might be a bluff?"

Shosuro Tsubo

The outburst from the Mantis was amusing, and worth staying to watch the conclusion. This was turning out to be an interesting party!

Seeing a fellow clansmen, a Yogo by the look of it, Tsubo approaches from the side and comments on the subsequent happenings.

"These others seek to defray the situation, and help this Mantis step back from the ledge he's drunkenly stumbled out on. A noble effort, but I wonder if it will work in the end. What do you think?"

Isawa Hikaru

I assume you meant us Plutonis since I'm the only spectacled one, but it's Phoenix, actually, that's why we're at the nerds table

Hikaru lifts a hand and makes a vague gesture, his other holding his drink rock-steady. "One action may have many goals," he says, keeping the quiet tones he'd been using thus far. "And I will certainly not gainsay the Empress' stated intent with her gift. A bluff? No, I think not. But words spoken here tonight will not go unremarked-- an additional benefit. And who would not sleep easier knowing traitors and potential traitors are being watched?"

If there's irony in that last, and there probably is, he says it straight-facedly enough that its existence could be denied.

Doji Katanobu

Oh, the curse of inebriation. Something that has to be tolerated when sake combined with good company is one of the finest pleasures in life.

The Mantis making these statements isn't especially well known to Katanobu and he racks his brain trying to recall what he knows of the man from the court. His instinct is to approach the man and try to make him behave acceptably, but to do so with someone who would be his superior could lose him his head.

Perhaps best to try and get a friend or relative to deal with him.

Primarily trying to see if there are any guests, possibly those that have just left because of the drama, who Katanobou could get to come back and deal with this guy. Failing that, judging his status to make sure he's not especially important. Guessing Courtesy/Awareness? 8k5.

Kitsuki Tsukino

D'oh! That has been taken care of.

"And there are many watchers here indeed, even if this Tsukino is usually the one to be subject of such scrutiny. It must feel quite insecure for one to have more enemies than allies... Truly our Lord Emperor must keep his caution during all the times." Tsukino says while giving a faint smile. "Still, you'd think that the Miya that kept their allegiances with Lord Hantei did the right thing when they committed mass Seppuku. It's the honorable thing to do, of course."

She pauses for a bit, trying to suppress a coughing fit with the sleeve covering her mouth. "Still, there are many who judge people from the companies they keep. That is something this one knows far too well."

Asako Kenta

"A bluff or no - that is not something to ask, I think. The Imperial family is wise and far-seeing, moreso than we can hope to be."

Kenta smiles, though it doesn't quite reach his eyes as he watches Tsukino.

"That said, the move is...interesting, and I can see why it might be made. But we don't know the state of the board, and we shouldn't seek to, here, I think. I do love a good game, but some are far too dangerous to play, wouldn't you say, Lady Kitsuki?"

Sincerity: 13, though it's not a lie in the first place.

Isawa Hikaru

"It's hardly my place to speculate who remains loyal and who does not," Hikaru says with a shrug. "Those who take refuge in such dishonour must exist, since we are told they do, and this will surely produce some of them." He slowly finishes his drink, does not go for another. "But it's unnerving to know that just because of an accepted invitation, one might be standing in the same room as traitors to the Empire."

I'm mossstly just doing the rolls how to gauge how to write being a sarcastic gently caress, anyway.

Yogo Tashimi

Tashimi thinks about how best to answer the Shosuro. "There's an old folktale about a foolish man who crawls out onto a fragile branch overhanging a cliff to get eggs out of a bird's nest, and then is stuck there. His companion goes out to rescue him, the branch breaks, and they both fall to their deaths. I think those people talking to him should be very careful on the branch." He finishes his drink, which he's been nursing. "As should we all."

His eyes dart around the room, trying to gauge the reaction to the Mantis's statements. Does he have any support beyond the one?

Kitsuki Tsukino

"The ones with dishonor have their places and uses, Isawa-san, just as one needs their own left hand. It's not always that the lack of honor is synonymous with feelings of betrayal, and vice versa." Tsukino says as she looks for a teacup, delicately drinking from it while she turns her eyes to Kenta, smiling back at him. "Then we are safe that we have nothing to hide from such prying eyes, Kenta-san. Our honor and honesty speak for themselves."

Trout Clan Daimyo

Miya Estate - Garden

There are a number of people moving away from the drunken Mantis, who most of you are able to place as Yoritomo Hokuden, a former ship's captain promoted possibly beyond his capability after the meteoric rise to Great Clan status. He's generally considered to be a fairly shameful figure, often publicly drunk, though until now, harmless enough.

"No, Osen-kun, if we leave now, they'll think it's because we have something to hide!" declares Hokuden. Then, raising his voice, he addresses the entire garden. "I have nothing to hide! I'm no traitor. I'm just a captain...without a ship..." He trails off, beginning to blubber a bit.

Ide Haku frowns before responding to Utaku Yue. "It is difficult, isn't it, to judge how long one should remain under such circumstances? I believe, though, that the Empress showing mercy demonstrates that the Emperor is not displeased with the Miya to the point where any associated with them will be punished, else the daughter, young Shouko, would have been executed as well for the sins of the parents. Moreover, we must not forget that the servants of the Miya are watching as well as the servants of the Emperor...and no doubt it will do the family good in such a troubling time to see that there are those who stayed to offer support." He sips his tea calmly.

Isawa Hikaru

"It may be that dishonour drives history," Hikaru says blandly, toying with his empty sake cup. "And it may in theory be that an honourless one may have other sterling characteristics. But I think you would be on a difficult ground to claim there is much honour in disloyalty to one's emperor." Ah, but is it wrong to be dishonourable, or disloyal, when faced with injustice and cruelty? Not a question he was about to voice.

Still uncertain after all these years.

Utaku Yue

She bows her head in consideration, “The Empress did say that they were accused of treason – not that they were in fact treasonous. A small comfort to the girl, I am certain, but worth considering.” Yue runs a finger around the lip of her cup, seeming to ponder it. “If her parents are guilty, I would not be so quick to condemn her – the Empire needs all bright young lights, and she is young enough that a good teacher could help her recover from this.” She suppresses the urge to sigh. “Haku-sama, I cannot help but feel that I would have diminished myself, failed morally, if I were to wish her well then refuse to offer consolation in a difficult time.”
