Lets talk about an artist who I positively adore, Douman Seiman. Underneath the random gags and the hosed-up humor that all his works contain, there's these oddly charming stories that I just can't get enough of.

Just as a warning though, most of his series are in some way or another. So don't be surprised by the exhibitionist androids and dog nipples.

Voynich Hotel (Volume 1 is done and 2 is currently being worked on)

A Japanese tourist goes to the small island of Blefuscu Isle to escape the troubles in his life. Though the island is full of new ones; like the ongoing civil war, mafia problems, a serial killer on the loose, and something to do with three witches. This is totally Dowman Sayman's best work, please read it.

car trips with your family!

giving your cooking an extra something!

theme park mascots!

P.S. the Chuck Norris jokes are in the original japanese. Give Dowman a break, he started this series in 2006.

Nickelodeon [Red] & [Green] (DL for Red, Green's in progress)

Two collections of short stories. I'd highly recommend reading these as well. My favorite stories in there include: a story about gay love thats refreshingly not played for laughs.

A mad scientist genetically altering lions.

Finding your best friend's body parts.

Oddman 11
A school has eleven weirdo students in it and a normal girl trying to reenact Scott Pilgrim. There's not many chapters of this out yet, but what I've read is promising.

Ayame and Amane
A girl is really obsessed about another girl; like in the super unhealthy 'smelling the area underneath her bed" way. I'm not fond of the first chapters, but the more recent are amazing (especially 8).

Paraiso
A 4-koma about dick jokes. There's very little translated, but thats not a problem since its all bad.

Escape from High School Girls (DL)
A one-shot about zombies, that happen to all be high school girls.

Short stories based on other artists' works.
  • Tower Girls' Party: An excerpt from a doujinshi about the cool manga series Witch Craft Works.
  • Dowman also contributed to a Yotsuba& tribute anthology: Sadly I haven't found a working download for it yet.

Do not talk about the following in this thread thank you very much
  • KAEDE
  • Sexual Instinct and the Hydrogen Bomb War
  • The Continuation of Sexual Instinct and the Hydrogen Bomb War
  • The End of Sexual Instinct and the Hydrogen Bomb War

These are straight up porn. So lets not talk about them, okay?

...your cybernetic implants, the only beauty in that meat you call "a body"...

I haven't read any of his "straight-up porn" things, but whenever Dowman includes sexual content or imagery, it seems mostly for, i dunno, atmosphere or flow. Nothing he draws is particularly arousing and most of the time it's about as sexy as a greek statue. It's more supposed to be part of the often very strange everyday life that his characters live. He's certainly not shy about sex jokes, though.

Aside from that, i love how unconventional he seems to approach many things. It DOES have a stream of conciousness-like quality to it, but he still manages to often give his scenarios a kind of cohesion and structure that makes for a compelling atmosphere. He loves his references, but they are rarely the sole focus for his humor. He just seems to throw everything that comes to mind into the mix.

Something i like is the mystery aspect to some of his stuff, like these black-eyes sisters that kinda look like zombies (or Zimmy, if you read Gunnerkrigg Court) in Voynich. It's just their quirk, no one acknowledges this and takes it as a normal occurrence in that world. Sometimes his worlds operate on specific rules that nobody ever bothers to explain or mention, and you just see the effects.

Honestly, I'm not sure if he was going for arousing or not from what I've read of those works (I've got about half way through that list); but they were published by a porn magazine, there's a lot of sex going on, and I don't want to see someone post about what a barrel of laughs it was when the old man hosed the underage girl or whatever.

They also just felt off, like Dowman was struggling to fulfill some publisher mandated quota.

This here, this is the first chapter of The End of Sexual Instinct and the Hydrogen Bomb War, it has no sexual content, and its only the chapter in there I've enjoyed.

I absolutely adore most of Dowman's stuff, especially Nickelodeon. His comics always seem very "complete", even though a lot of the time they're sparse when it comes to actual length and it takes a few re-reads to figure out what's actually going on. The surreal nature of a lot of his stories serve to enhance how heartwarming they are, in a twisted way.

Well, chapter 32 of Voynich is out. And as a reminder, two new chapters of Nickelodeon [Green] came out this weekend.

Huh, lots of death going on. I know its just a coincidence, but its a bit funny noticing there's a murder, an accident, and a suicide.

Edit: Voynich on an online reader.

Maaan, I knew it was coming, but it was still really sad to see Snark killed Kurosawa in Voynich. Especially after Kurosawa's conversation with Alice earlier. He was such a cool dude, and also a highly trained assassin, so I was hoping he'd manage to escape with injuries.

Kuzuki is so screwed. The assassin sisters are probably after him, and Snark said she was going to visit him at some point. There is no way he is getting out of this alive.

Voynich 33! For once, it's a happy chapter!

It's amazing that giving up on all your dreams and discovering a ghost who died in your hotel room before she could live out her own dreams is what constitutes happy, but I'll take it.

As the OP of the (dead) mahjong thread, this chapter made me feel all fuzzy inside

Small bit of trivia: The hand "peace" is actually a real thing, it's one of the most common. It's written 平和, which is normally pronounced "heiwa" but in mahjong is pronounced "pinfu". The subsequent hands, needless to say, are not so real.

Heyyyy. I like Paraiso but I do understand it translates really terribly compared to his other works.

It's a bit surprising to see a Sayman thread on SA. I was a fan of his back in the late 90s, and when visiting Japan in 2000 I got all six books he had out at the time, all of them porn books done for Seraphim Comics. It did bug me quite a bit that his stories tended to be on the rapey side, but his art had a really unique quality that was rather captivating.

I found it difficult to purchase Japanese comics shortly after that, so my collection stopped there, and eventually I lost touch with his comics. Thus, it is very nice to see his work catching on to the point where there's now a blog dedicated to translating it. And I must say, both his writing and art have improved leaps and bounds during the years I lost track of him.

Here's a page I found during a Tumblr search of what might be the end of Paraiso?

Yeah, those characters look pretty familiar. I intend to email the guy who runs the blog and ask about it.

I'm really enjoying Nickelodeon. Essentially every short story in it is interesting enough to make me want to know just a little bit more about them, but they are always so very short.

Meanwhile, over in Voynich Hotel, Snark is a terrible person, but excessively cute. That seems to be a running theme in this manga.

I enjoyed it a lot too. Especially this chapter, which is a creative spin on the old 'deal with the devil' story. It's a perfect story within 8 pages, which is a hard thing to do.

If you read the first version of this chapter (19 by the site's numbering system), you should really read the new version. The first version left out something that was necessary to understand the plot (presumably a translation gaffe), it made a lot more sense after rereading it.

Also I am totally expecting next chapter to cut to what went on in that room, and it is going to be something completely stupid and innocent.

The way I see it, Kuzuki has to find out about the witches sooner or later if he's going to hang on to his main character-ness and not die now, and what better time for such a reveal than when Elena has to protect him from an assassin?

The little sister could stick around and join that group of kids I guess if she survives.

Plus, this made me laugh:

I will say that some of Nickelodeon was hit or miss. The idea of the frog prince, except the frog is a poison dart frog is a great idea, but that ending was awful.

That's not quite how this manga has gone so far. Elena will likely only find out after Kuzuki is killed. Things will not go well for the sisters at that point, but that doesn't really help Kuzuki.
