It's been a while, but I remember being slightly irritated that all the ferret sounds weren't even close to reality. However, I did get to name the little dude after mine and murder thousands upon thousands of creatures with him, so we're still cool Torchlight.

We stopped using them "officially" in the army over here in the mid nineties I believe, but the original design was designed in 1936 and used a lot in the war. I think it stayed in service so long because it was absurdly dirt tolerant and could take being knocked around a bunch because it was basically the light machine gun version of the AK in terms of indestructibility.

Actually on machine guns with quick change barrels those are mostly barrel handles. It's used in order to change out barrels without touching it after you've put a lot of rounds through it. If you carry the weapon by the quick change barrel handles you can cause damage to either the receiver or barrel if you aren't careful or carrying it for extended periods of time.
