Newest Update: Chapters V/IX Easter Eggs

NO SPOILERS FOR THIS GAME AT ALL, THANK YOU.

Fall Of Cybertron was released on August 21, 2012 and is the sequel to the pretty great Transformers: War For Cybertron as a part of the aligned continuity. It takes place a fair amount of time after WfC (never fully stated how long) and only one transport off of the dying Cybertron remains: The Ark. The Autobots are trying to use it to escape and the Decepticons are trying to destroy it. Who will win?

Aligned continuity?
This contains the show "Transformers: Prime," the books Exodus and Exile, a bunch of comics and both Cybertron games. There is some issues where things don't line up perfect BUT Hasbro has said that each version of the story will be a bit different to fit the needs of the medium but the bones are the same. Prime is a GREAT show and should be watched (the first two season are on Netflix Instant). I have not read the books (they will contain spoilers for this game) and the comics spoil the hell out of Fall's ending. I will try and point out some of the issues or references BUT without spoiling the show, books or comics in case you want to experience those.

The LP:
This will be mostly subtitled due to the fact that the games heavy focus on story and voice acting but I will chime in when needed (or in the store to explain what is going on). I will be playing it on easy . .

Easy?!?!
Yes. This is mainly due to the fact that on easy this game is still pretty hard BUT around Chapter IX or so I will start putting out fully voiced Hard difficulty videos with some guests here and there so I can fully talk about the game. This is mainly due to upgrade/weapon spoilers that I would rather avoid. Also around that time I will be putting up a video of each of the Escalation maps. for those not in the know it's a wave based mode with four person co-op where you can choose from four Transformers to play as!

Bonus Videos?
Most updates will have around two other videos with it. One that is the audiologs on playback and the easter eggs which there is a ton!

UPDATE SCHEDULE: I will try to put out a chapter a week. If they are short I will try for two. Extras will be after a chapter is over.

NOTE: The "A" is the Audio log videos and the "E" are the Easter Egg videos

It's rare i get to enjoy an lp from the ground floor, and i was hoping someone would give this a go soon.

You suck for ending the first ep on a cliffhanger though. keep up the good work.

I don't really like subtitle LPs, since I usually have the videos running in the background as I do something else, so it's easy to miss the subtitles. But I really want to see this game...

This game feels just as busy as the last one. I keep wondering who all the robots shouting at you are. Given that this is Transformers, they must be redesigns of old characters, right? But they don't get any kind of introduction and I honestly can't even say which of the moving things on screen is speaking.

That last scene, my one (horribly killjoy) thought was, "Can that cannon only fire once? Why doesn't Megatron just blast Optimus a second time?"

But my complaining aside, this looks like a very interesting LP!

To be fair that is where the chapter ends!

Most of the time when characters are talking they say their names first UNLESS they are a nameless bot and often the character you are playing as will say the other bot's name when talking back. Kind of like "Optimus I need your help over here!", "On my way Ratchet!" Also yes they are mostly based on their G1 models (or the models from the first game)

Time for us to have some fun as Optimus Prime!

Let's rewind six days and play as Optimus Prime with The Ark in danger. Where is Grimlock when we needed him?

I like the aesthetics of the guns, in that the guns aren't actually something you pick up - even thouhgh that kinda removes the cool-ness of Soundwave originally being the only Transformer that had that design.

On that note - when do you start fighting the non-faceless mooks?

The only real time you don't fight the "faceless mooks" is when you jump into a boss fight or the last two chapters. Can't throw too many named people at the player to murder

I like how this series plays up the brutality of the Autobot/Decepticon war. It's fairly rare that they make it look like an actual WAR instead of an excuse to sell toys.

I'm really glad you explain things vocally. Thanks.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I felt like having Optimus talk so much was an unwise decision. His voice work is generally very good, but only if used sparingly. He sounds almost... flat, or even kind of indifferent when he has to comment on everything.

This is very true. Things do go much further when we get deeper into the game but all in all the aligned continuity is more about the characters than the toys. Just the fact that in the first two seasons of Prime only one new Autobot was added per season (three seems to be veering further into the "lets sell toys area")

I can kind of see what you are talking about but I always took it in this game that he is very tired and worn down with everything that he has been through in the last two games

Glad to see this game's getting an LP. For anyone who's seen the original G1 cartoon, this (along with War for Cybertron) was one long, giant nostalgia binge, and it is glorious. I'm sad they removed the campaign co-op, but I can see why that was done at least.

Speaking of co-op, are you planning on showing any of the multiplayer segments of this game after the campaign? I would try it more, but where I live the lag (and the way the servers are handled; boo limitation to auto-search!) tend to prevent me from really making a go of it.

I might drag a friend in and discuss the maps/modes but other than that all I can see is playing a game or two with some live commentary. I will do all four of the Escalation maps. THOSE are a ton of fun.

As was said before, I think it was intentional. Optimus is coming off eons of war with a power-mad psychopath that used to be his best friend and watching his planet/god die. The biggest catastrophe in his race's history happened on his watch and he can probably come up with thousands of ways that he could have stopped it in hindsight.

That kind of thing has got to weigh down on you. Still, he's soldiering on. Trying his best to be the leader that his Autobots need right now. He never wanted to be Prime, but he's got the title now, so he'll work through the pain. Peter Cullen admitted in an interview that he based his portrayal of Optimus on his Vietnam vet brother who specifically told him to not have Optimus as the indomitable action hero, so this tired, aching soldier seems right to me.

Enjoying this LP so far. The mix of voiced and subtitled commentary seems to work fine.

For how different the designs are, I'm really enjoying them. I think the new designs capture the retro feel while also keeping up to date. The only problem is that Bumblebee looks like he has rosy cheeks.

Sad thing, his brother died about two years ago (this month actually) and they dedicated an episode of Prime to to his memory called "Partners"

The designs are very good in this game with some edging closer to their Prime counterparts (Megatron) and others closer to their G1 (Bumblebee). The cheeks thing is a bit odd though

Update: The second chapter's easter eggs will be up in the next day or so. Next week both Chapter 3 and 4 will hit due to both being fairly short

With Metroplex helping out, Optimus Prime goes to take out the Warp cannons threatening the Ark. Will he succeed?

Also starting today for the rest of the week on the XBL marketplace it seems both War and Fall are on sale with their DLC as well.

EDIT: Audio Logs for Chapter 3 will be tomorrow (I think) and if I get it done Chapter 4 will be up on Thursday

And really, something you pointed out in the video.. They really did succeed at giving Metroplex a sense of scale, and he really does come off as massive. It's impressive.

At the end, that one little prompt of [METROPLEX ONLINE] earned a huge smile from me. Heh.

Fall of Cybertron is arguably (and in my opinion definitively) the darkest Transformers tale ever told. Even the G1 movie, which was infamous for letting the galaxy burn for the majority of its running time, doesn't come close to this. WfC takes a seriously dark turn near the end but it fails to really explore the 'holy poo poo we are hosed' ramifications of it. The Prime cartoon has a few moments, but it's downers are mostly dampened by the fact that the status quo for the Cybertronians already sucks so freaking bad. In the Prime cartoon, an Autobot named Wheeljack suggests putting a live grenade into a wounded and unconscious Decepticon as "an old Wrecker trick" - a "trick" that, by human standards, is a cut and dried war crime (the Geneva convention addressed this bullshit specifically). But even Ratchet, who's standing next to him at the time, doesn't even bat an eye at the suggestion. It's a pretty dark moment if you understand what just happened, but it's not really played up and is quickly forgotten by the show. Optimus's crew also happily uses a Cybertronian weapon of mass destruction (when discovered, Megatron even tells Optimus to back off unless he's in the mood for 'mutually assured destruction') at the end of the second season.

FoC actively depicts a civilization breaking apart at the seams. This isn't post-apocalyptic, it's INTRA-apocalyptic. Cybertronians are actively finding out exactly how desperate, cruel, and depraved they can be, and neither Autobots nor Decepticons are immune.

Not one of the more complicated characters I've ever role-played over the years, honestly, but fun nevertheless.

I'd argue it's also post-apocalyptic. These games and the Michael Bay movies are the only exposure I've had to the Transformers setting, but if these games are canon, then Cybertronian civilization has already been in massive decline for a long, long time, and little remains of the civilization they once had. It's just Autobots and Decepticons fighting over scraps.

My rule of thumb, ideally, is to have a new episode ready to go up when the posting frequency of your thread drops to only a handful of posts a day. So far this is a relatively slow-moving thread so your pace seems appropriate.

Also worth noting: Over the 4 LPs I've done I have NEVER managed to keep to that ideal. My current one isn't looking real hopeful for that either.

That is a problem with Prime. The show really dances around the edges of being serious with the war backstory and the brutal nature of a lot of the characters. But none of these themes are really dwelled upon. It seems like every time a real thought provoking notion comes up, it gets pushed aside and forgotten.

At the end of the day it's still there to sell toys, so it doesn't surprise me that they'd sort of gloss over a 'cool kid' character like Wheeljack being an unrepentant war criminal if it means they get to sell another thousand units of his toy.

To credit the show, though, Arcee's history gets as close to philosophical as I've ever seen Transformers be in any media, though. She manages to have an interesting psychological profile without lapsing into Kojima territory. Or being, you know, G1 Arcee.

Arcee really is a great character in the show. I mean I was not expecting to have a character in a kids show to have PTSD but there she was. Also her arc with Jack was really well done (and from the first episode of season 3 just getting better). I really hope they have a character like her in future series.

When this game hit I was not expecting it to go to the places it does (I will dig deeper into that when we get there) and this really makes me excited for what High Moon will do with both their Deadpool game and whenever they get back to Transformers. Even the Dark Of The Moon game they did wasn't bad just not tested enough. That Soundwave level went on for an hour longer than it needed to
