This morning I had breakfast with my best friend of 15 years and her adorable 11 month old baby. On Monday, she's moving to a city 600 miles away. This happened pretty suddenly, and I don't think either of us have fully processed it yet. I just know I'm going to miss her, her husband, and their baby terribly.

We could've gone to a fancy brunch place like we usually do when we get together, but because this will be our last time seeing each other for a while, we chose to meet at the lovely diner we used to cut class to go to in high school, and have visited on and off since then. We may be older now, and have pretty different interests, lives and concerns, but whenever I see her it's like getting my batteries recharged. There's something really lovely to me about the fact that no matter what life throws at us, no matter how far away we are, we'll always have each other and that lovely diner.

As we were leaving, I glanced back into the restaurant half hoping to see past versions of us... two high school goth girls whispering over cups of black coffee and a shared plate of fries, or a couple of hungover-looking club kids picking at their food while recounting the night before. I didn't spot any, but I'd like to think that past us would be pretty happy we're still getting breakfast together.

I really needed this thread today. My friend has been fighting cancer for 2 years, and today he took a turn for the worse, he has a few days at most. Posting these videos and pictures doesn't take much effort, but it's greatly appreciated when you don't have the emotional energy to do it yourself.

And just so this isn't a total downer post, in his 26 years this man has brought so much goodness and magic to the world, that it overshadows the pain of his passing. He taught everyone around him how to live, may we all take a page from his book.

I got a Facebook comment from my grandmother!

She wrote it out and then mailed it to me via USPS.

In her comment/letter, it is clear that she believes Facebook is some sort of internet magazine her friends and family put out. She is endlessly entertained by our "blurbs."

I kinda thought this was the case when her letter two weeks ago had "Like" and a drawing of a thumbs-up on it and asked who all these "readers" (my Facebook friends she doesn't know) are, they seem to like me so much.

Years ago when we got her AOL in her apartment, she would send us e-mail forwards by printing them out and sending them via USPS. We figured she would find an iPad a lot easier to figure out.

My grandmother is so adorable I could scream.

I work in a bakery in an upscale grocery store, and I got a customer today early in my shift that just made my day. A little old lady came in looking for a particular type of pie we carry, and said she hadn't found any on the table where our pies normally are. I checked, and sure enough, there were none left. Just as I was about to tell her that the ones on the tables were all we had (normally the case) I spotted a rack full of pies behind me, all boxed up and waiting to be labeled. The first one I grabbed was the exact kind the customer wanted, so I printed a label, slapped it on, and brought it out to her.

She told me that her husband had just gotten out of the hospital, and it was his favorite kind of pie.
