Yoga Fire! - Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior: A Tribute Album

released on 03/12/13

*posted with moderator approval*

bandcamp explanation posted:

I had this thought while in Bhutan in November 2012: "An album covering all the Street Fighter 2 songs would be really fun to make." It was.

This game is very near to my heart. I played it all the time as a kid even though I was never very good at it. The characters, stages, and songs always captured my imagination. I spent a while obsessively revisiting the game and eventually sat down and very carefully tabbed out the entire soundtrack (big shout out to TabIt).

While I tried to keep the melodic content as dead on to the game as I could, drastic artistic liberties were taken regarding tempo and percussion. I realized while transcribing that these songs take on an entirely different character when slowed down. I really liked the grooviness and new mood of the slower tempos and decided to roll with it.

I made this album for fun, basically because I really love these songs and because I wanted to make use of the recording studio that I built over the summer. I played all the instruments live and did all the audio engineering.

I posted it on my Facebook wall with few expectations and found that my friends were sharing it, and then their friends were sharing it, and the bandcamp trackbacks then started showing it posted all sorts of places I've never heard of. I have a few buddies in the chiptune and video game music scenes, and they are adamant that I need to pursue exposing this more.

I thought, hey, what better way to do that then by sharing it with Something Awful? This place has consistently given me entertainment for 8 years now, so I love the idea of giving something back to the community.

I've been denied all the best Ultra-Sex.

I'm really digging the slow tempo and is that harmonica?

EDIT I think you're right vvvvvvvvvvv because sometimes i thought it was an accordion or something too.

Sounds more like a melodica.

The album isn't bad, an interesting take on an otherwise charged-up soundtrack.

The slowed-down swing take on this well-known fast paced album really caught my interest. Very impressed!

BASELESS ACCUSATIONS

I like this so far, but these track listings don't make me think I'm going to hear an homage to the great SF2 SNES or SSF2 Genesis pause sounds.

I'm getting the same vibe that Silent Hill had on some of its rock tracks, which is always a good thing.

The Sagat theme (Emperor) is fantastic. This is awesome.

...and what about the kick in the groin?

I didn't dig the tempo at first but as I was working with it playing it kept me mellow. Well done!

It is indeed a melodica. I really love the way that they sound but have only ever heard them used in dub music.

I didn't even think to do the pause sound, that would have been ridiculous and also awesome.

Thank you so much for sharing! I really appreciate that.

And I appreciate all the listens and downloads, this is really blowing me away.

How dare you make a Guile's theme that doesn't go with everything! Actually, it still does, just at close to 1/2 the speed, but the video has to be slowed down too which makes it even funnier.

I would love to see a "Guile's Theme Goes With Everything" video that uses my version. If that ever happens it will totally make my day.

OP, if you haven't already, check out some albums by "The One-Ups". They're on spotify and have a very similar slowed down-jazzy style of game covers.

I was going to post exactly this. These songs have a very similar mood to the silent hill scores, and that is not a bad thing.

This is pretty good. Video game covers and video game inspired music are pretty crowded genres, and Street Fighter 2 is up there with the Mega Man games for most musically explored titles (I'd link some of my favorite tracks, but that would be inconsiderate), so it's really cool that you still had a fresh take to bring to these tunes 20 years later.

Thank you all, this experience has been really wonderful. I never expected that I would one day have the #1 album in instrumental rock on Bandcamp. This community played a good part in that achievement. 2013 has been the best year ever for me.

Listened to this album all day yesterday. Now i want a melodica. I had never really heard one played, and it just ... it seems to scratch that itch that harmonica does, just with a better sound.

So far "Wind // Woods // Fire // Mountain" is my favorite track by far. But im loving all of them.

Terrific work.
