Here's the situation goons. I've been given a decent size bottle of Smirnoff Vodka and Jack Daniels by a well meaning friend but the problem is I'm a total puss when it comes to liquor. I like drinking just fine but I only do beer and occasionally coolers and I've never been able to drink anything else. They're coming over this weekend and I want to knock a few back with them. What I'd like to know is some suggestions for some mixed drinks using JD and/or Vodka. The more they mask the taste of the liquor the better and feel free to suggest more than one for each, they're big bottles. I'm well aware of the basic screwdriver and jack and coke but I'm hoping for something a bit more interesting. Thanks in advance (Also feel free to mock me for being a huge wimp, I deserve it)

Have a chaser on hand to help it go down. Or even TWO separate chasers. As for the vodka, you need to make yourself a bloody mary. ALL the bloody marys. Tomato juice, Tabasco sauce (careful now!), worchestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, celery salt (Lots of this), maybe a bit of paprika if you have it to spare. Then you'll need some green olives (With a splash of the juice) and pickle (With some of the juice). I skip the pickle anyways myself, but put the juice in. Oh yeah, and lots of vodka. So much vodka your mother stares at you and asks you if you're going to put in any tomato.

This is the liquor thread. http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=3438778 One trick I found that works, take a swig and hold on your tongue. Don't spit or swallow, just let the burn eventually numb you.

SoulTaco posted:This is the liquor thread. http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=3438778 Alternately, here's one that worked for me when learning to drink new liquors, especially whiskey: 1:Inhale through your nose 2:Take a small sip of booze, preferably chilled 3:Exhale through your mouth. Much of what people have a hard time with is the alcohol vapor lingering in their mouth, which usually goes right to their nose. After doing this for a bit, you get used to the alcohol part of the vapor, and how it feels in your mouth/nose. After you get used to it, you will learn to enjoy the flavor in the alcohol. Vodka is the most neutral flavor, and I would recommend vodka and soda or tonic with a lime. It's the easiest drink to start with, and probably the most common. Don't use sugary sodas unless you really can't stomach the liquor, it's a crutch. Not to say that having a Jack and coke is bad, but learn how to drink the booze first, and then what you prefer as a compliment mixer.

Lynchburg Lemonade http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink4471.html Might want to replace the sour mix with some fresh squeezed lemon/lime juice and simple syrup (you can skip the egg whites, foam is not a requirement for this drink) Its easy, not everyone has heard of it, and is named after where JD is made. And if your guest don't like it you can use the exact same recipe with vodka.

Whiskey sours are pretty tasty. If you really want to drink it without tasting it, get some cold cold soda, and do a chaser on either side of the shot. Take a sip of soda, pound the shot, and immediately have a gulp of soda. It should get the job done. Just be aware that if you're drinking a sugary drink on top of liquor, it's going to accelerate the buildup of your hangover, so chug a couple glasses of water before you go to bed, or try to have a glass of water every 2-3 drinks.

The one I've been doing recently is decent enough. It's for vodka and is really simple, just equal amounts of fresh lemon juice and vodka diluted with some tonic water, over ice. Don't be concerned about the exact proportions, make it to your own taste. Lemon masks vodka really well, but there's no added sugar so it's not really a girly alcopop if that's your concern, and the lemon's diluted enough it's not sour, just tangy. Remember, if you're masking alcohol, cold is your friend, so keep the ingredients cool. Only problem is the vodka is masked too well; you can have a good half dozen just fine and it doesn't even taste like you're drinking, but when you stand up to get another you fall flat on your face totally shitfaced. Also you can end up drinking 2/3 of your bottle of vodka in a single evening without even noticing it, if you use a big glass. As for the whiskey...I have no new suggestions.

I have an idea. Just suck it up and sip a few when your friends are there because of social obligation and then don't drink them anymore because there's no point drinking things you don't like. Give them to a homeless man or something, he'd probably appreciate them.

For whiskey either use a couple of icecubes or add some tap water, infact, if you add a tiny bit of water the smell becomes stronger (Which is considered a good thing), while it won't burn like acid down your throat. Another trick (to actually enjoy the taste) is to look at the percentage of alcohol and basically add 1 1/2 seconds per 10% to hold it in your mouth, then swallow. Not only does it taste much better, the sting when it goes down is severely reduced. So if it's 40% hold it atleast for 6 seconds or so. For the more *expensive* whiskey's, drink whiskey preferably in a round glass that covers the nose while drinking, combining the aroma and taste for the best results. Tumblers and other glasses usually leave a gaping hole on both sides which the aroma can escape from.
