![]() http://www.crystalsforlife.ca/ Crystals For Life (C4L) is a Final Fantasy speedrunning event put on by the FF runners from Speed Demos Archive to help raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), starting tonight and running through Tuesday. If you're one to regularly follow speedruns or maybe even have come from our very own speedrunning thread, you'll recognize a couple of the games and runners from previous SDA events. If you're new to this whole thing, you're in for a treat. All these runners have put in a lot of time and devotion to figuring out how to take one of the most famous RPG series of all time, which consumed many a childhood, and condensing full playthroughs into bite-size chunks. Furthermore, they're really great at explaining all the little tricks and techniques that go into making the time fly by. Lastly, this marathon isn't limited to just the numbered series. Plenty of spinoffs will be included like Dissidia, Mystic Quest and the Legend (SaGa) games. So sit down, pop a cold tonic, and watch airships go where no airship has gone before! Here's the current schedule. Times are in CST since that's where I'm viewing it from, but if you bring it up from the C4L page it'll set to wherever you're located. code:

I was pretty down on long rear end RPG speedruns until I actually watched one. They're a lot of fun! If I had to pick one run to watch this marathon, I would say puwexil's FFV run. Hoping to catch some of the runs I've never seen before, though.

The audio on the C4L website is super quiet for me, does anyone else notice that? Going directly to Puwexil's stream works fine though.

I haven't noticed that problem, but I've been having all kinds of issues with Twitch in general today (oddly mis-sized stream window, clicking on the Viewer List button instead refreshing the page, not being able to revert from the new layout to the old at all, etc.), so it's not outside the realm of possibility that that's just another manifestation. As far as interesting runs to look at for this marathon, FF5 has already been mentioned as a solid choice. In addition, FFL3 is spectacularly broken, as is FFL1, and Mystic Quest is a fun watch as well.

There's a hugeass MLG tourney being streamed on Twitch this weekend as well, so expect that to potentially cause issues for some people. As for specific runs, besides the ones mentioned, I'm curious to see Crisis Core since I couldn't bring myself to finish that game. Also, and not to promise anything, but Metasigma was talking about doing a WR attempt on Secret of Evermore at some point during the marathon, which by now has turned into an equality if not more broken game than the FF games. Not sure if that's still a possibility or not. iastudent fucked around with this message at Mar 16, 2013 around 03:15 |

I think SoE was discussed as being a bonus stream game post-marathon, among others.

iPodschun posted:There's a way to underflow (I think that's the right term) a character's MP which gives them 65k MP. It's something with trying to cast a big Cure spell with low MP outside of battle while scrolling through the spell list. That character can't cast spells outside of battle anymore, though. Tellah normally has 90 or 95 MP at that point so he can't normally use Meteo (99 MP). Ah, okay. How does the underflow glitch work?

And that's FF4 done in 4:29:55, 5 seconds under estimate! A couple game-overs early on unfortunately but not really much that could be done about those. For the graveyard shift, XIII is starting now.

So I missed the most of the earlier parts of the FF1 run, but could anyone explain why his team was so strong? He kept the Thief dead the entire game, ran from most of the random battles, was killing bosses in 1 round of attacks, and his Monk and White Mage were hitting super hard, while using Swords.

From the way I understand it, there's a glitch that tricks the game into thinking your party has all that insane endgame stuff that's only on the Anniversary Edition. Something about using a hammer on a piece of armor and that's all the info I managed to get.

Oh god how did I miss this thread yesterday. Or maybe it's good I did, I would've probably put my rear end into a chair and watched all of FF4. Like the prior SDA events, these will be up for watching after the fact, I assume? I want to catch Mystic Quest really bad since I played it so much as a kid but it's just too late. At least The Final Fantasy Legend is early (and surprisingly short).

Yeah the videos should be up after the fact. The Mystic Quest and FFL3 runs are really cool, from what I've seen.

With Interlude now out of the way, we're moving onto the real meat of today with the arguably most and least popular FFs back-to-back. If you watched FF7 at AGDQ a couple months ago, you'll probably be familiar with all this. If not, here's what to expect. -Ridicious renamings -Puwexil ripping apart the game's plot (and programming) logic at every chance -Tifa punching anything and everything with the fist of an angry god(dess) -PALMER DANCE

As FF7 winds down now, just wanted to say that FF8 will be well worth the watch, regardless of your feelings towards it in particular. It's a game with a reputation for having quite a few ridiculous moments to it, and the runners are well aware of that fact if you've been keeping up with the donation incentives towards it. Poxnor, who ran the game at SGDQ last year, will be on hand for commentary so expect him to break down the game in a very entertaining manner. Also this is maybe just speaking personal experience, but FF8 is one of the first games I remember hearing about as a kid about people breaking the poo poo out of by exploiting the junction system. Prepare to see that cranked up to 11, and then some. If nothing else, just wait until they start playing Triple Triad. Hint: donate for Rude Siri
